Book Description

The author presents a compelling look at how innovation transforms industries, raising the fortunes of some firms while destroying others. The book draws on the rich history of innovation by inventors and entrepreneurs--ranging from the birth of typewriters to the emergence of personal computers, gas lamps to fluorescent lighting, George Eastman's amateur photography to electronic imaging--to develop a practical model for how innovation enters an industry, how mainstream firms typically respond, and how--over time--new and old players wrestle for dominance. Utterback asserts that existing organizations must consistently abandon past success and embrace innovation--even when it undermines their traditional strengths. He sets forth a strategy to do so, and identifies the responsibilities of managers to lead and focus that effort. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843425, $32.50.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information, eye-opening.......2005-10-27

Excellent job done by Mr. Utterback.

I had this book for a class in master's degree. I was very impressed and found that it had a huge impact on me. I am not a reader, but found myself really engrossed in this book. One of the few "textbooks" that I still recommend to friends and family. It helped me understand investing too. I have an understanding now of when industries are mature and when they are still growing. Just wish I could see it before it happens. Then I would be a millionaire and thanking Mr Utterback, not writing this review :-).

2 out of 5 stars Read Clayton Christensen's Books Instead.......2005-07-22

This book covers much of the same ground that Clayton Christensen explored in his three revolutionary books: The Innovator's Dilemma, The Innovator's Solution, and Seeing What's Next. Truthfully, those books do a far superior job of explaining the dynamics of innovation in comparison to the performance of this book. Utterback does have very insightful comments on the standardization of product design, but outside of that section, the book is not particularly exemplary. For those interested in mastering the art of innovation, the game begins and ends with Clayton Christensen.

5 out of 5 stars Scholarly analysis in an eminently readable enjoyable book.......2003-02-15

James Utterback has achieved the difficult goal of taking careful scholarship, drawing useful conclusions and presenting the whole package in a highly enjoyable book. He makes a major contribution by distinguishing between product innovation and process innovation and shows how and why the former is likely to come from outside the established industry players, while the latter is more likely to come from inside.

In the process he reaches back into history and covers industries ranging from pond ice to memory chips. Combining his explanation with concepts with Geoffrey Moore's "Crossing the Chasm" provides a powerful means of understanding where innovation comes from and what the barriers are to its success. Utterback's book goes beyond that. It also calls into serious question the idea (posited by Moore and others) that today's "high tech" cycle of innovation is fundamentally different from earlier innovative cycles in other industries. All in all, Utterback uses industrial history in a low-key, fact-based book that shines a clear, bright light on what drove yesterday's technology developments -- and today's.

5 out of 5 stars an understanding of innovation.......2002-03-10

This book is written in a concise manner that is straightforward and easy to understand. Utterback explains how innovation has evolved over the years, using great examples from a variety of assembled and non-assembled industries. One side note, I found that this book was worth the cover price for the history of industries he mentions alone. Some of the products and industries mentioned in this book include: Incandescent light bulbs, Typewriters, Glass, photography, and Ice. This book is loaded with invaluable nuggets of insight, it is impossible to due it justice in a book review. I highly recommend reading it.

Book Description

Creating, adapting to, and exploiting change is inherently entrepreneurial. To survive and prosper under conditions of change, firms must develop the ldquo;dynamic capabilitiesrdquo; to create, extend, and modify the ways in which they operate. The capacity of an organization to create, extend, or modify its resource base is vital. Since the concept of dynamic capabilities was first introduced, much research has elaborated the initial idea. This important book by Constance Helfat and her team of leading scholars provides a timely focus on in-depth examples of corporate dynamic capabilities. Testing these in the different contexts of alliances, acquisitions, and management, the book gives students and researchers a succinct, up-to-date definition of dynamic capabilities and the strategic management theories around them.

5 out of 5 stars A critical book to read if you want to understand the underpinnings of strategy.......2007-08-31

I may be the only person to write a review for this book, as its price is a little steep for the casual business book reader and this is not a casual business book.

Dynamic Capabilities is an academically based book, a collection of co-coordinated articles about the nature of capabilities in general and the capabilities that change capabilities (aka dynamic capabilities). As an academic book it is very strong with the authors tackling many of the major economic and corporate strategy issues involving why enterprises are designed and work in a particular way. From this perspective it is theory that is well researched, carefully and clearly explained.

Capabilities in general and dynamic capabilities in particular are critical for enterprises in devising and realizing their strategies and performance goals. In this regard, this book is a must read for corporate strategists and corporate development processionals who need to understand how to organize and structure the enterprise for success.

The articles in this book lay down the rational and logic for your leaders should view and organize their resources to achieve their strategies. I will admit that the language and the structure of the chapter/articles are geared more for researchers and students, but taking the time to read, understand and reflect on the implications of these research pieces is well worth the effort.

Mortensen's current research topics: The development of equilibrium dynamic models designed to account for wage dispersion and the time series behaviour of job and worker flows. The conference is the sixth in a series. From the beginning there has been a close interplay among economic theorists, econometricians, and applied economists. This book also has a section with theoretical papers as well as sections wtih micro- and macro-econometric papers. These conferences have had significant influence on how we think about public policy in the labour market, and what kinds of data would be needed to answer questions about these policies.

5 out of 5 stars Take a Thinking Expedition to Excellence.......2007-06-07

This book is a great addition to your ready reference library. It's a practical, hands on approach to creative thinking and innovation - words that Rolf points out "scare" some people today but make perfect sense to some more "experienced." Rolf writes in down-to-earth easy-to-understand language. He challenges your thought forms and encourages intellectual growth that sets you free from boundaries. The process Rolf describes gets you out of your comfort zone in a fun and engaging way (Try mountain climbing with him). At the same time he acknowledges individual beliefs and values as important foundations from which you draw strength (so every idea is not automatically discarded). This book is easy to use - it's organized to allow you to jump around as a reference work or to read straight through as a learning tool. There is space to write in the margins - in fact, Rolf has written some of his own comments in the margin - which allows you to personalize the book as your reference. Versatile, this book works for both personal (individual) as well as organizational (collective) development. It is based upon years of innovation workshops and "Thinking Expeditions" since the mid-1980's -- with real people in real organizations trying to accomplish great things through idea generation. I participated in one of these workshops back in 2001 and then read the first edition of this book. The principles and techniques described work and this new third edition is even better than the first. I highly recommend Rolf's book, his ideas and his program.

    5 out of 5 stars Transformational.......2005-10-12

I received my first copy of the first edition of this book as part of a thinking expedition held by Texaco to redefine their approach to Knowledge Management. I was a deep skeptic and was converted by working through the seven levels of change. The second edition of the book is even better than the first. I've given away several copies of this book and keep coming back for more.

5 out of 5 stars Really a six star book.......2005-06-24

I don't know what these other people are thinking. On a scale of 1 to 5, this book is a 6. I've now done the Innovation Ground School and a thinking expedition with Rolf and Durwin Sharp, and my hair is till on fire. Anyone who doesn't read this book is a bozo. Everyone should call up Rolf and sign up to do the Innovation Ground School, then the School for Innovators. Let's keep these two guys working until they are well into their 90's, which is only a few years I hear.
But seriously, (well as seriously as an ENTP can be) this book helps you remember all the stuff you got at the IGS or a Tx. I haven't done the SfI yet, but I'm hopeful to be in Estes Park this fall. This is serious work for innovators. If you've struggled with making innovation work at your company, these are the guys to talk to. This is the book to buy. I'm getting 5 of them so I can loan them to colleagues at work when I work with them. The book will probably help you a lot if, but the Innovation Ground School is the best place to start. Your hair will catch on fire about day two and it will stay that way for the rest of your life, if you pay attention.
Buy this book. Buy extra copies of this book. Give this book to people who don't understand you. Show them where you are on page 248 and where you think they are. You'll both benefit from this book. BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars different thinking, different book.................2003-03-11

Not only being a student of Rolf's School for Innovators, Thinking Expeditions, as well as a reader of his first edition of The 7 Levels of Change........this 2nd edition is REALLY a significant mindshift and a MUST read for anyone truely wanting to understand the change process......I am a Personal Life Coach and work with individuals in achieving their goals which are always based around SOME change if not RADICAL change and I use the 7 Levels constantly.......I have used them to develop programs that not only explain change but navigate you through the maze that most books get lost in....there are so many examples, so many tools, so many new ideas in the 2nd edtion that I agree with Rolf when he said " I should have written this book the first time around"....great luck on your journey, you are being guided by the best!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The clearest explanation of systems thinking you can find!.......1999-02-26

After extensive research in 1975 and 1976 of twenty-six organizations, Kotter developed a model to supplement or replaces other diagnosis models of the time. His criteria for determining the elements was support for their importance from convincing research literature; that they were mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive; and they illustrate the dynamic life cycle of a real organizations. The purpose of his model is to integrate common findings among several fragmented and often opposing studies. The model contains seven major conceptual elements that can describe most organizations from the simplest to the most complex.

In its time, Kotter's model was quite unique and revolutionary. He broached the concepts of systems thinking with his cause and effect analysis, alignment/non-alignment, and homeostatic driving force aspects long before experts and researchers were considering it important to analyze all of the seven elements and their relationship. Kotter's model probably met with some severe resistance from experts who had been analyzing and creating models for organizations for years. Other consultants did not begin to think systemically for at least another decade. His intent was to create model to fill in the gaps and cross lines that other models were not designed to handle.

Like any well-developed model, I believe this model will stand the test of time and evolution. The model still has the criteria required to analyze and diagnose any organization in today's business world. It maps the life cycle of an open system, from the time the environment provides input, to the systems processing of that input, to the output for the environment to dispose. The model is simple enough that it requires minimal explanation to the client, yet detailed enough to capture virtually any variable that affects organization development and change. Questions developed with the model cover valid and reliable specifications for how a system should look when it is running efficiently. Most importantly, it reminds the user to analyze all facets of an organization to diagnose the problem instead of a symptom. Along with it's 90 page descriptive guidebook, the model is a practical way to grasp the philosophy, discipline and common pitfalls of effective diagnosis and intervention with minimal exposure to the process.

5 out of 5 stars Technological Change: Peril or Opportunity?.......2000-08-30

Utterback explains "how companies can seize opportunities in the face of technological change." There are dozens (hundreds?) of other books on the same subject, notably those written by Geoffrey A. Moore. I rate this book so highly because it is exceptionally well-organized and well-written, because it examines several offbeat subjects (eg the development of the typewriter and the evolution of the typewriter industry, the development of the incandescent electric light), and because Utterback focuses so intensely -- and so effectively -- on real-world situations in which the "dynamics of innovation" are manifest. This book is very informative but also great fun to read. (Those who enjoy it as much as I did are urged to read both The History of Invention and The Lever of Riches.) Chapter 4 revisits the the dynamics of the innovation model (Figure 1-1) and then in Chapter 5, Utterback shifts his attention to developments within the plate glass manufacturing industry. In Chapter 6, he examines the innovation differences between assembled and nonassembled products. Subsequent chapters sustain the discussion of "the power of innovation in the creation of an industry" and then, in Chapter 9, Utterback "draws together some of the lessons of earlier chapters and academic research to consider the relationship between the behaviors and strategies of firms with respect to technological innovation and long-term survival." He concludes his book (in Chapter 10) by addressing "the perennial management issue of how corporations can renew their technology, products, and processes as a basis for continued competitive vitality." It is obvious to all of us that even the strongest product and business strategy will eventually be overturned by technological change. Ours is an age in which change is the only constant. Therefore, as Utterbach explains so carefully and so eloquently, the challenge is to accept the inevitability of change which results from technological innovation ("discontinuities") and to sustain a commitment to cope effectively with such change. Only such a commitment "will win the day."

5 out of 5 stars Untangles the Web of Confustion Surrounding Innovation.......2000-04-19

Utterback does a superb job of providing real world examples of how innovation can change the landscape of your business. The book provides a clear understanding of the life cycle of innovation and the behaviors within a firm as they migrate from a focus on product innovation to a focus on process innovation.

The book provides a guide that can be applied to any industry, any product in any time. It gives the reader the ability to identify what phase of innovation their company is in and helps them predict how other companies are behaving today and how they might behave in the future in the face of direct competitive challenges.

The book also clearly demonstrates that innovation that can wipe you out will seldom come from the "Usual Suspects". Not those you see at your direct competitors, but from those companies that see the weaknesses and deficiencies in your products and redefine how they could be overcome with new technology.

I found this book to be a perfect balance of academic principles and cold hard business reality. A very enjoyable read that has provided me with yet another valuable tool to use in developing strategies to defend existing markets and tapping into new.

It focuses on how management must think about new innovations in technology and processes. Ultimately to survive they must not shrink away from a technological threat, but face it head on.

Most companies defend their position by intensely focusing on how to make their existing product, better, cheaper and faster. Ultimately they realize that as shinny, beautiful and cheap as they have made their latest buggy whip, their customer has lost interest in the face of some new technology.

Cheaper, faster, better, smarter will only keep your doors open for so long and microscopically staring down on both your customers needs and your products attributes, may leave you standing outside looking in.

      Great read!

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile and important study on how corporations die........1996-09-22

I found Mr. Utterback's book to be an excellent book on the reasons for the inability of existing corporations to make the needed rapid adoption of changes necessary to compete in a world of punctuated technological changes. I found his editors lacking in their permitting too many academic attitudes filter through to the final version. Too many refereneces to "Utterback, our and my". Tiresome and pedantic in places. All in all an excellent peice of work though. Glad to have read it and I will undoubtedly read it again. Congratulations Mr. Utterback on an important piece of work. Dan Taylor dtaylor@io.org

Beyond Reform argues that economic growth in developing countries is intrinsically tied to the dynamics of production structures, to the specific policies and institutions created to support it, and the creation of linkages among domestic firms and sectors. Avoiding macroeconomic instability is also essential, however, macroeconomic stability is not a sufficient condition for growth. The broader institutional context and the adequate provision of education and infrastructure are essential "framework conditions", but generally do not play a direct role in bringing about changes in the momentum of economic growth.
