The mother influences the child's growth and development. That's pretty obvious. This book goes to the neurobiological underpinnings of this phenomenon, referring to several thousand studies, to show how the connection between mother and child actual influences the way the child's brain develops. It is a treasure trove of information on how the prefrontal cortex matures through interaction with the mother in the early stages of life.
As organizer of The Futurehealth Winter Brain Meeting, I have repeatedly recommended this book to colleagues who have an interest in frontal lobes, to attachment disorder, to the links between the brain and self control, violence in the schools, and even, in a recent on-line listserve discussion with a former president of APA, who suggested that first come values and then positive emotions. This books strongly suggests that first come positive emotions and experiences and these lead to establishment of a brain w hich is responsible and well regulated. This is no light read. But Schore is worth it. He's brilliant.
An exceptionally thorough, well written study.......2000-01-01
I found this book exceptionally engaging and fascinating. I have read much about the development of affective, cognitive, psycho-sexual, self and gender development, and wanted to learn more about the physiological and anatomical correlates to the observable behaviors in babies and children, and this book was 100% satisfying. The author painstakingly discusses Bowlby, Ainsworth, Spitz and other attachment theorists, providing the essential facts of affective and attachment development, and then in a very clear, understandable way, provides the neuroanatomic and neurochemical explanations of the observed phenomena. The book is intensively researched, and the ideas are developed in a sequential, logical and easy-to-follow manner. I recommend reading Robert Karen's book "Becoming Attached" first, to truly understand Schore's book.

Book Description
Building Biotechnology helps readers start and manage biotechnology companies and understand the business of biotechnology. This acclaimed book describes the convergence of scientific, political, regulatory, and commercial factors that define the scope of biotechnology. In addition to its popularity among business professionals and scientists seeking to apply their skills to biotechnology, Building Biotechnology has also been adopted as a course text in more than fifteen advanced biotechnology programs including MBA programs at UC Irvine, Tepper, and Schulich; the Johns Hopkins biotechnology MS/MBA program; and extension programs at Berkeley and UC San Francisco. This second edition significantly expands upon the foundation laid by the first, updating case law and business models in this dynamic industry and adding significantly more case studies, informative figures and tables.
Customer Reviews:
Great text on many levels........2007-06-13
I have always been interested in the link between a good idea and successful business. This well written text supplies readers with a great overview of biotech, as well as nicely focused examples of the history of the field.
I spent a nice Saturday on the beach reading this book not knowing exactly what to expect. I received an easy to follow enjoyable read that was informative. I ended up reading the entire book twice as well as a number of select chapters numerous times. Each time a picked up the book I got something new out of it.
I would strongly recommend this for any Biotech professional as well as interested MBA students/professionals. It pulls together nicely a number of very important parts to creating a successful start up company (biotech included)
As a scientist my ungood grammar and lack of a more creative summary don't do this outstanding book justice. Worth every penny of $60.
Good idea, but fall short on quality........2007-03-09
There are numerous typos, probably one every chapter. The idea behind this book is great, however the author has a very difficult way of explaining the concepts leaving you reading and re-reading sentences over and over again. There needs to be more depth, and a professional review to correct grammer, typo's, and perhaps write more coherently.
The book is good, I would own it, but it really needs major improvments.
Good book for a quick, concise overview of the biotech industry.......2006-10-21
I bought this book for a biotech project management class aside from the required books for the course and found it more helpful than any of the required books (not on project management, but as far as understanding the biotech industry). It provides a very good overview of the biotechnology industry that would be helpful for almost anyone touching this field - investors, professionals considering working in the field, patients considering a new drug therapy or participating in a clinical trial, doctors... I would recommend this book as an excellent first read to get the "lay of the land" followed up by more in-depth research in areas you need/want to know more about. By the way, my whole team ended up using the book to help them each prepare their part of our final project, which was a product development plan that took a novel cancer drug from phase 1 through commercialization. Thus you can see the scope of the book is quite broad and yet direct, the book is only 200 pages plus several useful Appendices (e.g. one is on careers in biotech and another provides and index of websites for different biotech areas).
Book Quality.......2006-08-31
This is in response to the review stating that a book was bound upside down. I would like inform everyone that this was an isolated printer error and in no way reflects the Publishers attention to detail or concerns for quality. Occasionally a make-ready (set-up) copy slips though which is the likely scenario in this case. We (the printer) take full responsibility for any inconvenience or skewed review.
Building Blocks.......2006-08-30
Yali's book is really an excellent starting point for many people interested in knowing the basics of the biotech world. This includes an increasingly broad number of people. First, I highly recommend this book for MBA students interested in careers in biotech and healthcare. Second, this book should be bought by every medical school and bioag research university and given to every new faculty member. Why in 2006 do we still find faculty members who have no clue about the technology commercialization process which has allowed their field to expand into a muli-billion dollar industry. Perhaps every bio grad student should be given a copy. The book covers much ground, sometimes quickly. If you are into the field, the book could have been longer and more detailed, but its emphasis is clearly introductory. The case examples are great learning tools and a bit of history for the industry. Learning from the successes and failures of others is not new, but perhaps the next version will include more historical perspective on the boom and bust in the industry. The cycles of mergers and acquisitions, public financing windows, and valuation fluctuations could be of increased value.
Overall this book is highly accessible and an enjoyable read. Go to the Glossary and see how many of the words you can accurately define. Yali keeps the amalgam of topics together through concise writing and useful case examples.

Book Description
This book presents important new research on applied eco-efficiency concepts throughout Europe. The aim of eco-efficiency is to achieve market-based measures of environmental protection, in order to enhance the prospects for sustainable development and achieve positive economic and ecological benefits.
The distinguished authors discuss a number of themes surrounding eco-efficiency including the necessary conditions for technological dissemination and ecological modernization, and the role of government in enabling businesses and society to participate actively in this process. In particular, they highlight the application of existing European-based policies concerning material flows and energy. The authors also investigate some new concepts of sustainable development and provide a useful introduction to material flows analysis. In further chapters they study the emerging regulatory policies for eco-efficiency, and examine the issues of sustainable business and consumption strategies.
Environmental and ecological economists, policymakers and political scientists will welcome this original and insightful book which translates the theory of sustainable development into practical policy and business-related solutions.

Book Description
The early years are critically important for the development of self-regulation--the set of abilities that enable children to control their emotions and behavior, interact positively with others, and engage in independent learning. This book examines how self-regulation develops in the first 8 years of life and describes practical ways for educators and caregivers to support its development. Part I reviews a diverse body of theory and research on the growth of self-control and self-direction across emotional, social, motivational, and cognitive domains. Also described is contemporary research linking self-regulatory abilities to control systems in the brain. Part II presents concrete suggestions for enhancing self-regulatory skills in infants and toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners, and school-age children. Chapters address caregiver and teacher behaviors, behavior management techniques, ways of arranging the environment, and strategies for enhancing peer interactions and children's interest in self-directed learning.

Book Description
Although social psychology has been traditionally focused on interpersonal relationships, the cognitive revolution in psychology has had the effect of refocusing some social psychology on intra-psychic processes. This area of psychology has become very popular in recent years, yet there is currently no other textbook available for the study of the self. As part of the prestigious McGraw-Hill Social Psychology Series, this book carefully documents the changing conceptions and the value accorded the self in psychology over time. It further outlines the many alternative conceptions of this increasingly central domain in social psychology. New research and conceptions are juxtaposed with the classic and traditional, providing the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the study of the self.

Excellent book, but could be updated!.......2005-01-15
I have been a student of Dr. Brown and really enjoyed his class that used this book as a text book. If you are in or near Seattle check out "Self-Concept" at U of WA psychology department.
A year later I am still using this book as a reference.......2003-05-11
First, I should say that I was a student of Dr. Brown's and took his class in which we used this book as the text. But, I still find the information contained in this book useful even now that I am no longer a student. I found this area of psychology very applicable to my daily life, and I am surprised that this is the only book on self-psychology available on the market. He writes in a clear, entertaining manner and he makes the concepts easy to understand. This is a valuable reference to me, and I am certain it will continue to be as I enter graduate study in psychology.
Scholarly, insightful, and accessible.......1999-06-11
Jonathon Brown has created a book that works in both the home and the classroom. Written as a text for upper-level psychology classes in self-psychology, it manages to span the usual gap between 'informative' and 'engaging.' An excellent read for the interested layperson and an invaluable resource for the academic. Bravo!

The Economics of Regulation: Principles and Institutions
ASIN: 0262220628 |
Book Description
Departing from the traditional emphasis on institutions, this text emphasizes the use of economic theory and empirical analysis to understand regulatory and antitrust policies. Questions addressed include: What are the market failure rationales for, and appropriate form of, government intervention? What does theory show about competition in the presence of a market failure and the implications of government intervention to correct that failure? What do empirical analyses indicate about our regulatory experience and the direction of future intervention?
The third edition addresses many issues that have recently dominated the economic and political landscape. New material reviews the government's case against Microsoft, charges of anticompetitive pricing in NASDAQ and airlines, the blocked Staples-Office Depot merger, and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This edition also covers the deregulation of the California electric power industry as well as recent deregulatory efforts in bank branching and natural gas transmission. On the social regulatory scene, it covers in detail recent cigarette litigation and the contentious issue of the contingent valuation of natural resource damages, as exemplified in the Exxon Valdez oil spill. New empirical evidence appears throughout the book.
Each part of the text can be used separately for a variety of courses including regulation and antitrust in undergraduate institutions, business schools, and schools of public policy, as well as background for doctoral courses. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter.
Customer Reviews:
Regulators should read it.......2007-06-26
Economics of Regulation and Antitrust offers a broad conclusion on Regulation and Antitrust policies. The issues are well described and easily to understand. Best suited for graduate students in Economics.
Horrible.......2007-06-04
This read like a math book with a few interesting facts. I was dumbfouned by reading this book. I would get to class and my professor would explain things using the same examples from the book and I would understand. The book is impossible to follow. It will give you a million variables and different numbers to think about, and then later expect you to remember something it briefly mentioned two paragraphs ago. If you can learn from reading a math book and no class room instruction; I not only would like to meet you but hand you this book. You would probably love it and understand antitrustlaw and regulation as well as the douches at MIT that wrote the thing.
Heavy life saver!.......2005-02-13
Seldom books on economic theory, particularly on regulation and antitrust are as clearly and professionally written as this one. A student of economics and Ph.D. hopeful, I keep this book within my hand reach at all times.
Economics of Regulation and Antitrust cites numerous antitrust and regulatory cases from American and European history and is thought provoking rather than doctrinal. The graphs are exceptionally easy to read and understand. Particularly well written are chapters on regulation of American transportation.
I continue to use this book for my research and highly recommend it to anybody who is seriously interested in understanding the logic behind regulation acts, game theory, and franchise bidding.
This Book Stinks.......2004-04-21
If you are looking for a nonconsistant book that jumps around and does not follow through on its explanation of certain topics than this is the book for you!
Review of Economics of regulation and antitrust.......2000-05-15
This work provides an excellent overview of the field of regulation from an economic point of view. The primary focus is economic rather than institutional -- as a result it is more appropriate for economists than for legal scholars. Although the book does not require extensive training in economics, it does assume some formal knowledge of basic economic concepts. Since its focus is economic, little time is spent discussing legal cases surrounding many of the regulations compared with, for example, Law, Business, and Society, by McAdams, et. al.
