Book Description

A bold manifesto by two business leaders, A Billion Bootstraps shows why microcredit is the world's most powerful poverty-fighting movement-and an unbeatable investment for your charitable donations.

A Billion Bootstraps unearths the roots of the microcredit revolution, revealing how the pioneering work of people such as Dr. Muhammad Yunus-winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize-is giving hope to billions. Philanthropist and self-made millionaire Phil Smith and microcredit expert and consultant Eric Thurman provide a riveting narrative that explores how these small loans, arranged by “barefoot bankers,” enable impoverished people to start small businesses, support their families, and improve local economies. By paying back their loans instead of simply accepting handouts, men and women around the world are continually giving others the same opportunity to change their futures.

Smith and Thurman also examine why traditional charity programs, while providing short-term relief, often perpetuate the problems they are trying to alleviate, and how applying investment principles to philanthropy is the key to reversing poverty permanently.

A Billion Bootstraps explains how ordinary people can accelerate the microcredit movement by investing charitable donations in specific programs and then leveraging those contributions so the net cost to lift one person out of poverty is remarkably low. You'll discover how to get more for your money by donating with the mind-set of an investor and calculating measurable returns-returns that will change lives and societies forever.

3 out of 5 stars Its an overview of what microcredit is but not how to start one .......2007-09-19

This is a good book in explaining what microcredit is and how to get involved, but not how to run a microcredit organization.

I preferred Mohammed Yunus (the noble prize winner) autobiography to this book it gave a better summary of what it is and explains how microcredit can work in the rural and inner city US which a Billion Bootstraps doubts can happen. In Yunus' book he demonstrates how microcredit has worked programs in urban Chicago and rural Arkansas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Microfinance.......2007-08-26

The book explains well the business model of microfinance, what works and what not. It provides a very good insight into this industry. The author has obviously broad experience.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Those Who Seek to End Poverty.......2007-05-27

A Billion Bootstraps is potentially a world changing book. It describes the most effective way to end poverty that I've ever heard about. I had heard about micro loans -- before but didn't know how it worked or how powerful it can truly be. Many misguided people believe that giving people things is the answer to poverty, and sadly, that is rarely the case. Intuitively many of us have also realized this but never had a better way, never had an answer. Here's the answer and it's told and explained in a straigt forward and compelling way. I particulary enjoyed the stories of the lives that have been changed by micro loans, truly inspiring. My hat is off to Phil Smith and Eric Thurman for the fine work they have done in spreading the good word about the creative business solution to poverty. This is creative problem solving at it's finest. For more about creative problem solving, see: Jack's Notebook: A business novel about creative problem solving

5 out of 5 stars Powerfully motivating.......2007-04-16

The best way to attack poverty is through the use of sound economic principles. This book will inspire you to look at poverty, not as a hopeless problem, but as an opportunity to effect real change in the lives of individuals. By acting upon the lessons of this book, you can ignite the spark of personal industry in the lives of people who can then create lasting wealth for their families, communities, and countries; finally succeeding where "charity" had previously failed. Reading this book will show you how you truly can make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening read.......2007-04-15

A Billion Bootstraps changed the way I view charitable giving. Now instead of "giving to a charity," I am "investing in changing lives." What's more, I've learned to look for and expect accountability from the organizations which receive my money. Microcredit, which once seemed an esoteric concept, is now accessible to those of us who don't have business or economics degrees, thanks to Philip Smith and Eric Thurman. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to intelligently invest in changing lives of the poorest of the poor.

Book Description

"Sage advice." -- Booklist, March 15, 1983 "The" classic book on fund raising. "The Raising of Money" quickly became the all-time bestselling book in the world on fund raising, a distinction it continues to maintain because the human principles are timeless. It's also still the only book that distills the most important ideas - the essence - of fund raising and presents them in such a concise and useful format. It's like a checklist. The core of fund raising's key ideas are delivered each in a few hundred words. Often, called "the bible of fund raising," it's also being used as a desk-top reference for the professional, including the organization's CEO. Professionals give the book to volunteers as a gift to do their work for them: It gives them a quick grasp of work works in fund raising and what doesn't. It is designed to add weight and credibility to the ideas that the most successful development executives emphasize to their volunteers. ?? Author Jim Lord's life has been dedicated to advancing society, beginning with a 1975 series of articles on quality of life in American cities. In the first decades of his work, he facilitated the investments that people wanted to make in social sector organizations. And indeed billions of dollars have been contributed to causes where Jim has served as "thinking partner" in the relationship. A complement to "The Raising of Money" is "The Philanthropic Quest," a nine-installment series for the professional in fund raising. Looking beyond the rewards of that pathway, he committed himself to expanding the idea of what is possible for humanity, studying that question in intensive workshops with small groups of selected leaders from more than 50 countries. From that groundbreaking work, new ideas and practices emerged to advance our society to its next level through causes and organizations of social good. Now, more than a decade after the first learning lab, those discoveries will become available in his title, "What Kind of World Do You Want?" The author is listed in 'Who's Who in the World.' www.lord.org. Three Volunteer Leaders Comment on Jim Lord's work . . . From the founder of Procura A.C., the first institute in Latin America to teach institutional development . . . "Jim has helped me visualize where donors and non-profit organizations converge, where we can make the difference in a positive, human and ethical way. Bravo, Jim! Your way of thinking has inspired the 6,000 participants Procura has trained in Mexico and Latin America." - Marcela Orvananos de Rovzar, President of the Board, UNICEF Mexico From the former vice chair of the largest privately held company in the world . . . "When I was introduced to this approach, it was the first time an organization had ever asked what was important to me. It influenced how I think about myself philanthropically and how we need to treat others." - Barney Saunders, Civic leader; Vice chair (retired) Cargill, Inc. From the co-founder of a ten-year old school in Vancouver, widely considered the best in British Columbia . . . "We always felt we were on a heroic journey and it was confirmed to us by an introduction to Jim Lord's Philanthropic Quest. Jim's talent lies in helping individuals and organizations discover their strengths and articulate their highest aspirations for themselves and for society at large. This process energizes and inspires the commitment of volunteers and donors. What a gift for us all." - Debbie MacDougall, Board member, Southridge School, Vancouver

This book will likely not become obsolete as long as nonprofits are raising money. It doesn't attempt to address many specifics, as are different in every situation and with every organization wishing to raise money. Instead, it addresses the theories and philosophies of philanthropy and the ideas behind the core art of fund raising. I'm having my employees and board of directors review this book when I am finished with it.

5 out of 5 stars Financial DNA the new trend in servicing clients .......2007-06-13

Hugh Massie's Financial DNA book expanded the way I see my practice today. He helped me to understand that the most important aspect of the personal finance advisory business is discovering the unique financial personality of each customer, not the technical side of products or money management.

With his broad experience as a wealth mentor, Hugh envisioned a new way of servicing clients. He developed a user friendly framework based on scientific methods of behavioral profiling in order to align personal needs with financial objectives.

By citing real life examples, he shows how his Financial DNA Discovery Process and Tools can be used in helping advisors to better understand and communicate with clients and tailor a financial strategy suited to their financial personality, allowing them to experience a better quality of life.

I have started introducing the "knowing people before the numbers" concept and realized that my relationship with clients, which had already gone through the Discovery Process, improved tremendously.

I want to congratulate Hugh and his team for the visionary work that they are doing!

1 out of 5 stars An infomercial.......2007-01-21

There are a couple of glowing 5/5 reviews for Financial DNA here already, but I'm not sure they accurately represent what the book is about.

Financial DNA is a psychological profiling service offered by the author of this book's company. This book is a written infomercial for the Financial DNA service.

It doesn't describe how the service works, the psychology on which it is based is a commercial secret and while some of the questions the tests ask are listed, it doesn't provide any kind of marking key. The author keeps all details of how the service was developed or how it works a secret. If you log in to their website, enter your credit card details and do the tests, you'll get a series of charts and scores but won't know too much about how these were derived as the system is basically a psychological black box.

I can't see how the book itself warrants a 5/5 rating, nor how the reviews already published relate to the book. They are obviously satisfied customers of the Financial DNA service, which for all I know is just as fantastic as they say it is, but that's not the product on this Amazon page. I'm reviewing a book today, not the service the author is trying to flog. I'm somewhat surprised that Wiley agreed to publish it, books of this genre are normally self-published.

5 out of 5 stars "Bring your master plan to the surface".......2006-03-18

As someone currently using Financial DNA, both for myself and my financial advisory clients, I believe this book presents a superb system for living a quality life based on understanding your own unique natural behaviors.

The modular design used in the book lends itself well to a customized approach for each person. Although it can be used by an individual alone, it is best used while working with a financial advisor trained in the system.

As more and more the financial services industry focuses on the advisor "knowing the client", I expect cutting-edge advisory firms will use Financial DNA. The Chief Compliance Officers at broker/dealers would be wise to read this book, and consider how it could help their advisors not only "know their clients", but help their clients live a quality life.

I think within the next five years, Hugh's Financial DNA will become the index, the measuring stick, by which all financial life planning systems will be compared to. Yes, the book is called Financial DNA, but the book puts money where it ought to be...after understanding our natural behavior, then we can talk about money. Hats off to Hugh Massie for a seminal contribution to our individual lives!

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge.......2006-02-23

Knowledge is power. Knowledge of ourself and others has power to transform lives. Hugh's book and system provide a path to acquire this transformational power. Well done, Hugh.

"I was so impressed with Wealthy and Wise that I suggested my 19-year old daughter read it. What better introduction to life's responsibilities and the utility of money? My wife heard our discussions and we put Mr. Rosenberg's ideas to work. Recently diagnosed and successfully treated for cancer, she was amazed at the current anti-nausea drugs. However such drugs are expensive and can put a real drain on a less fortunate family. My wife's oncologist thought that funds to assist in such situations were really needed. Our brand new family foundation wrote that check recently and we feel great! I thank Claude Rosenberg for such a wonderful book."

      Book Description

Religious NGOs are important sources of humanitarian aid in Africa, entering where the welfare programs of weakened states fail to provide basic services. As collaborators and critics of African states, religious NGOs occupy an important structural and ideological position. They also, however, illustrate a key irony—how economic development, a symbol of science, progress, and this-worldly material improvement, borrows heavily from other-worldly faith.

Through a study of two transnational NGOs in Zimbabwe, this book offers a nuanced depiction of development as both liberatory and limiting. Humanitarian effort is not a hopeless task, but behind the liberatory potential of Christian development lurks the sad irony that change can bring its own disappointments.

While rapt attention has been given to the supposed role of NGOs in democratizing Africa, few studies engage with the ground operations. Questioning the assumption that economic development is a move away from religious mysticism toward the scientific promise of progress, the author offers a remarkable account of development that is neither defeatist nor comforting.

      Book Description

With funding for nonprofits shrinking and global markets shaky, our business and social sectors are both confronting an increasingly uncertain future. Many organizations are searching for innovative strategies that will counter the mounting pressures felt by communities and corporations alike. Common Interest, Common Good argues that forward-looking businesses and social sector organizations (both nonprofit and government) can solve many of their problems by working together-while serving the common good in the process.

According to Shirley Sagawa and Eli Segal, alliances between for-profit and the not-for-profit industries yield enormous benefits for both. Businesses can boost their bottom line by leveraging a nonprofit partnership to enhance their image, reach new markets, increase consumer loyalty, and build a positive reputation with current and prospective employees. The upside is just as powerful for nonprofits, because an alliance with a corporation can provide crucial funds and visibility while helping to attract new volunteers and donors. Common Interest, Common Good showcases many such successful partnerships, from corporate sponsorships and cause-related marketing to employee volunteer programs and school-to-work initiatives. The authors also offer some much-needed guidance for avoiding many of the pitfalls that can undermine even the best alliances.

A convincing, deeply felt book by two authors who have devoted much of their careers to helping public and private sectors find profitable new ways of working together, Common Interest, Common Good is a guided tour of the progressive new strategies that can contribute to the purpose of our businesses and the prosperity of our communities.

4 out of 5 stars Great book from a business perspective.......2001-05-17

This is a great book for businesses looking for unique opportunities to both make a difference and raise their community standing. It is comprised of real, powerful examples of how these partnerships can and do work. This book should be read along with Bill Shore's, "The Cathedral Within."

5 out of 5 stars Creating Great Value for Companies and Communities.......2000-09-14

Every company I know is interested in getting and providing a great deal. Every nonprofit I know is committed to the greater welfare of the society. But almost no companies and nonprofits know how to link together to multiply their effectiveness in achieving their purposes.

This book provides outstanding examples and a superb template for creating partnerships of great value for all involved: companies, their employees, nonprofits, and the communities that everyone serves. Based on the examples in this book, it looks like the benefits can easily be 20 to 1 in the near term from the time and money invested. That kind of return is hard to find in business, philanthropy, or social entrepreneurship. The reason it happens is that the company can add value that the nonprofit cannot, and vice versa. The strategic partnership is not unlike the strategic alliances that companies create all the time with comapnies that offer unique strategic capabilities.

The reason these benefit are so large (and growing) is because customers and employees are ever more responsive to promoting a social cause, companies are getting better at partnering with outside organizations, and the expertise of nonprofits is growing.

Businesses can gain by getting low-cost recognition from customers that will increase sales, obtaining low-cost resources, making work more meaningful to employees (helping to retain them), attracting employees more easily, and learning how cause-based leadership can transform an organization. When you look at it from a dollar and cents point of view, these partnerships would pass any accounting test you want to use. Not to seek out these partnerships is to waste potential for growth and profits in your company. Corporate boards should be asking company CEOs to develop these partnerships!

Nonprofits can gain by learning how to increase outcomes they care about, gaining access to resources that would otherwise be unavailable, getting more exposure, and finding improved ways of meeting their missions.

Communities will gain by getting more resources, expertise, and attention from social entrepreneurs in companies and nonprofits.

So this is a win-win-win world, but somebody has to get it going. Chapter ten is excellent on that subject: It proposes a 5 step model for the nonprofit -- self assess, identify a partner, connect to that partner, test the relationship idea, and grow the relationship.

Although the initiative can come from the company, it usually won't. The executives already have other agendas, are receiving hundreds of requests for assistance, and don't know what many nonprofits can do for them. You can add some corporate executives to your nonprofit board who will understand companies to help you make these connections. The biggest hurdle will be the lack of corporate experience of your nonprofit's staff. Nonprofits are used to looking for a check, not a partnership. But that reliance on gifts alone is stalled thinking that will hold back the development of the public good.

The case histories include Home Depot and KaBOOM! (building playgrounds), Microsoft and the American Library Association (adding computers and Internet services to libraries in low-income areas), Denny's and Save the Children (raising money for poor children), BankBoston and City Year (sponsoring volunteers in community work), Ridgeview, Inc. and Newton-Conover Public Schools (creating better public schools and better parent involvement from employees with children), and Boeing and Pioneer Human Services (creating airplane parts by employing those with disadvantaged backgrounds). I found all of them to be interesting and well analyzed. Each one gave me ideas for how to pursue opportunties like these for the nonprofit on whose board I serve.

I especially recommend this book to company leaders, human resource executives, purchasing managers, and marketing planners. On the nonprofit side, this book will be a revelation to staffs and board members.

After you have read this book, please join the board of a nonprofit (if you are not already on one). Then, please use the processes in this book to create a strategic partnership with your company or another one in your community. You will gain strategic partnering skills and a sense of a job well done. The others will gain the benefits described above. If we each did this, our communities would soon be far more wonderful places to live and work.

      5 out of 5 stars Powerful thinking.......2000-02-29

Common Interest, Common Good represents powerful thinking that has already withstood many challenges and overcome many barriers. Corporate executives will benefit greatly from the book's clear and cogent lessons on the benefits of corporate/social sector partnership. This book is proof that goodness can endure.

5 out of 5 stars Common Interest, Common Good.......2000-02-19

I'd strongly recommend this book both to corporate executives looking to improve corporate image and morale and to non-profit leaders seeking new funding mechanisms. Although the hokey title evokes past clichés like "doing good by doing well," the book is actually a practical, hard-headed approach to making companies run better by working with non-profits -- either through straight philanthropy, employee volunteer efforts, or joint ventures.

      5 out of 5 stars A most useful book.......1999-12-01

As a former corporate executive and a former member of the boards of directors of several non-profits, I can only wish this book could have been available years ago. Just think what I could have accomplished! I certainly recommend it for people in similar positions now.

In contrast to so many business oriented books, this one is engagingly written and eminently readable

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth the [money].......2002-05-08

The Jossey-Bass series has a good reputation, as does Kent Dove. But this book is a huge disappointment. It is billed as an indispensable aid for practitioners and a textbook for students, but it serves neither set of readers well. Practitioners looking for solid advice and good examples to illustrate principles in action find nothing of the sort. And pity the poor student who has to slog through this to pass a course. This is an uninspiring, tendentious, tedious exercise in making the elegantly simple art of fundraising appear to be some arcane mystery that only the likes of a long-time practitioner like Kent Dove can master.

Most people are intimidated enough about asking for money, they don't need to be scared/shamed out of the field by reading this kind of mumbo jumbo that makes them feel stupid or inadequate.

The book has a few good tables and nuggets of useful information, but not enough to justify a [money] price tag. I'm glad I borrowed this from the library to preview it before buying -- it saved me the effort of returning it.

        Book Description

        * Exposes the selfish motivations behind the Western international aid regime, uncovers who gives and why and the culture of imperialism, financial control, and globalization
        * Authored by Stephen Browne, a Director at the UN and the man who coined the term "Millennium Development Goals"
        * Controversial reading for everyone in international aid and development governments, NGOs, to field-workers, donors, and researchers

As the world struggles to come to grips with failure in Africa and to meet the Millennium Development Goals worldwide, the clamor grows for a doubling of development assistance. But it is increasingly clear that aid has fallen woefully short of delivering the necessary help to those who need it.
In this powerful and wide-ranging critique of the Western development assistance paradigm, one of the most experienced development practitioners argues that the debate on development effectiveness is missing the point if it fails to acknowledge that most bilateral aid is driven more by self-interest than altruism.
Aid can work where donor influence coincides with development need. But donors--whose aid bureaucracies are much more powerful than those of their developing country counterparts--make their own assessment of what these needs are, set the development agendas and provide aid on their own terms, while maintaining other obstacles to development progress such as trade protectionism. The challenge, therefore, will be to encourage developing countries to get to the point where they are in a position to say "no."
