Book Description
America's most sought-after executive coach shows how to climb the last few rungs of the ladderThe corporate world is filled with executives, men and women who have worked hard for years to reach the upper levels of management. They're intelligent, skilled, and even charismatic. But only a handful of them will ever reach the pinnacle -- and as executive coach Marshall Goldsmith shows in this book, subtle nuances make all the difference. These are small "transactional flaws" performed by one person against another (as simple as not saying thank you enough), which lead to negative perceptions that can hold any executive back. Using Goldsmith's straightforward, jargonfree advice, it's amazingly easy behavior to change.Executives who hire Goldsmith for one-on-one coaching pay $250,000 for the privilege. With this book, his help is available for 1/10,000th of the price.
Customer Reviews:
Grow the leader inside.......2007-10-14
At the top everyone is smart and accomplished - ok, feel free to argue this one - but all else being equal, Goldsmith argues that it is our behavioral issues and people skills that will ultimate determine how high we can go. Our ability to listen, solicit feedback, identify our behavioral flaws and shift the focus from ourselves to others are integral components of our career path. The author provides a great overview of the most common personality pitfalls and behavioral issues and offers many suggestions to help us improve. An interesting read and well worth everyone's time.
Insightful thoughts based on proven approaches.......2007-10-12
Goldsmith has managed to sustain his edge as a thought leader without unnecessary academic exaggeration. This book is an excellent read for leaders at all levels, and even those who are not. It provides thoughtful lessons on professional and personal development that will resonate with all. I will share it and the book Understanding: Train of Thought with all of my students.
What Got You Here Won't Get You There.......2007-10-09
This is an excellent tool for personal development. If you have a highly successful team, this book is a "must read" for all of them! It will take your staff to new levels of personal development.
Leadership Development 101.......2007-10-03
I have coached over 500 individuals over the last 10 years. I do referral only business. After reading Marshall's book, I felt as if someone punched me hard in the stomach! I at first wanted to dismiss his premise that leaders want to win, be right, and generally look good. Was that me? After careful reflection and becoming introspective, I found Marshall's insights profound, and so simple, not only as a coach, but also as a manager in business. I now use the book as a reference book, and have purchased two copies. For me it's a must read for anyone interested in their personal development, or the development of others.
Good, but not the whole story.......2007-09-16
Bo Burlingham's book offers an interesting look at the ultimate objectives of privately held businesses. Each case is unique and engaging. However, I think Bo could have spent more time discussing exit strategies. Some of the owners stuck with their companies when they could have cashed out and do an even bigger, better company with the proceeds. Risk has to be considered and the failure to more heavily weight this aspect is the only issues I have with Mr. Burlingham's book. I will pass it along to others.

Great Study tool.......2007-10-19
I really enjoyed the ease of how this read. Easy to have 10 minute study times each day that had a complete lesson so consise!
Inspiring words- minature book- extremly minature.......2007-10-09
I guess I overlooked the word minature (my fault) at a glance it just looked like the regular size book and was very excited to find it at such a good price, and hardcover at that! PLEASE know if you order this you are not going to get the full version of the book. I am going to pay closer attention and get the whole thing next time. Felt a bit silly when I opened my package and the book was about 2 inches x 4 inches. For me I'm going to BAM and shop in person for this one!
Total Disapointment.......2007-10-05
This is not a book but a sham, A full sized book was shown on the web-site, but when the order showed up it was a minature. After reviewing the web-site I was able to find the word minature in small print. Not sure if I will use Amazon again
Deceptive: Not the complete edition.......2007-09-06
[Added 9/07/2007] This review concerns the "Inspirio/Zondervan Miniature Edition" which is a hardback. Amazon has lumped this hardback edition with the full text hardback edition so the site does not indicate that this review does not concern the full hardback edition. Caveat Emptor
We ordered this book, thinking it was the complete edition of the book. Neither the Amazon page nor the book itself make it clear that it is merely an abridged version. The only way to tell is to note that this edition has 125 pages and a full sized edition has 200+ pages. Needless to say, we will be returning it to purchase the complete edition. I am looking forward to reading the content as I have heard good things about it.
Cute little item........2007-09-02
Be careful about your purchase. The one we acquired was a miniture version. The type was ok and you could read it, but the book was about 2" x 3". It was a miniture and not at all what we thought we were acquiring. We wanted the whole book. When ordering we did not notice that it was a miniture edition.

Customer Reviews:
The best Christian writer of our day.......2007-02-01
It's funny -- I love James Taylor and I love John Ortberg. I think the commonality there is that they are such great wordsmiths. Very honest, plain-spoken, and yet so much is contained in so little said. Ortberg is not a poet, but he's able to see great truth in simple things.
If you avoid being confronted with truth, then avoid this book. But if you're ready to face it, then read it. He's the CS Lewis of our day.
You Too Can Walk on Water.......2007-01-03
The weekly men's breakfast and Bible study that I lead spent an enjoyable six weeks examining how following Jesus today requires the same faith that allowed Peter to step out of the relative safety of the boat and move toward Jesus on the water. If you or the people you care about need encouragement in moving out of the comfort zone, this book will help.
Faith.......2006-09-28
This is one of the best book that I have which talk about faith. If you need encouragement or something to help you increase your faith, then this is the book for you.
If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat - Participants Guide.......2005-09-20
John Ortberg really knows how to make it real and how to get people to begin applying biblical principles to their lives.
Get Your Small Group Out of the Boat.......2005-03-15
Ortberg's small group series are among the best, if used with his teaching DVD's (Zondervan, but you'll have to find that elsewhere, it appears).
This particular study appeals to a broad range of backgrounds, and experience levels. We all wrestle with "staying comfortable" vs. "stepping out in faith" when the situation calls for it. Through excellent groups discussion and Scripture investigation questions it is easy to guide a group to go beyond their current "comfort zone" and take steps of faith "outside the boat."
But purchasethe DVD for best results (use an Internet search engine and you should find it quickly). Ortberg is a master teacher, and his 25-30 minute teaching is a must.

When the Little Things Count . . . and They Always Count: 601 Essential Things That Everyone In Business Needs to Know
ASIN: 0385484550
Release Date: 1998-04-13 |
Book Description
In the three seconds it takes you to walk through a door and extend your hand to someone for the first time, that person has already made irreversible judgments about you. You send out hundreds of signals about yourself, and people read those signals and react to them long before you've had a chance to say or do anything of substance.
Camille Lavington is a communications consultant who commands substantial fees for teaching personal marketing to business people from corporate executives to mid-level managers. In You've Only Got Three Seconds, she shares her strategies for defining your personal career goals, taking inventory of your strengths and vulnerabilities, and determining what you must do, say, and wear in order to fit the role you want to fulfill.
Personal marketing isn't about social cimbing or trying to be someone you're not. Success at the end of the millennium comes to people who are versatile, who can make positive impressions in any group, who can peg their peers' or superiors' secret agendas, and use psychodynamics to get what they want. With this book, people from entry-level job applicants to stymied executives will be ready to take their internal and external makeovers into the world, make a smashing first impression, and follow through with finesse.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ for anyone desiring to get ahead in life!!! .......2007-01-04
This book is a fascinating and very accessible guide to self packaging, covering far more than just manners and appearance. Authored by Camille Lavington, a brilliant, dynamic, witty former corporate executive and socialite, this impressive book shares her saavy and secrets about breaking into and rising in the business and social scene. She's been there, done it, and risen to the heights of the corporate, business and society worlds, and generously shares many of her secrets and lessons. A delightful "must read" for anyone seeking business, social or person success!!!
Rapport building.......2007-01-04
Great book for demonstrating rapport building importance and how it can easily be done.
Don't Waste Your Time.......2006-08-01
Frankly, this book is barely worth the paper it's printed on. It's full of "social climbing" truisms that should be obvious to anyone with a pulse. Very little of the book is actually devoted to first impressions, which is what the title suggests.
The only remotely useful part of the book is a couple pages describing the relationships between economic advancement and social advancement. Don't waste your time.
Looking for simliar book.......2005-12-28
I found this book while trying to find a book I first heard about in the early 80's. I believe the title was something like "Contact: The First Three Seconds". I'm hoping someone will read this and assist me with the actual title and/or Author of the book.
What Impression Do You Make?.......2005-12-22
Anyone looking for a job needs to prepare beyond typing up a resume. Read this book. It helps you to see yourself as others see you. Run through the checklist for grooming, presentation and body language to tune up your "impression makers."
The boss is looking for someone with energy, enthusiasm, job skills, and who fits with the current team. Far too many candidates have no idea of the image they project. Slumped in a chair while mumbling answers is not likely to impress an employer.

Very inspiring and lots of little insight to help personal growth. I love it.
I am changing my religion.......2007-03-08
I am a Hard Core Christian go to Church every Sunday and Wednesday. I am active in Church group activities and do my duty to preach to others. However, after reading this book, I decided to become a Buddhist. I have NEVER EVER met Buddhist I did not like, unlike Christian world where people are all about ME ME ME, JESUS loves ME, you need to be like me......Buddhism teaches DEEPER inside of you, not some artificial, external hope and wish to make you feel better with ego. I wish USA was Buddhist Nation, then there will be no war.
tremendous.......2007-02-09
As someone barely familiar with Buddhist tenets, but very interested, this book was no over my head. In fact the author takes the basic principles and applies them to both a spiritual and psychological approach. I read this book with tremendous enthusiasm and feel I have begun a change I will carry forward with me. I look forward to reading this author's other books.
A gem of a book that everyone should read.......2007-01-31
Absolutely wonderful book that gives do-ale suggestions for unsticking all the places your life is in a rut. Kasl is a psychotherapist in addition to practicing buddhism. Her advice is well thought out and clearly presented. I found myself digging deep within myself and my motivations. It may be a little "fluffy", but I strongly feel most people who benefit from this book. I know I was able to make some positive changes. Highly recommend.
Excellant Guide to Getting Unstuck.......2006-08-31
I am only half way through this book and have found enough good suggestions to ponder for weeks.

Book Description
Got Parts? was written by a survivor of DID in association with her therapist and therapy group. This book is filled with successful coping techniques and strategies to enhance the day-to-day functioning of adult survivors of DID in relationships, work, parenting, self-confidence, and self-care. Got Parts will help you introduce yourself to your internal family and improve its communication, integration, and well-being. Although written to carefully avoid triggering, it delivers well-grounded guidelines for living that DID people need to do on the way to recovery. Coping strategies included help you with issues related to triggers, flashbacks, and body memories. Got Parts also includes a detailed list of outside resources you can draw on. This book is intended to be used in conjunction with a therapist and is not a substitute for therapy.
Once thought of as a rare and mysterious psychiatric curiosity, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is now understood to be a fairly common outcome of severe trauma in young childrenmost typically extreme and repeated physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, and often lack of attachment. Formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder, DID is a condition in which a person has two or more distinct identities or personality states that recurrently take control of the person's consciousness and behavior. Symptoms can include depression, mood swings, panic or anxiety attacks, substance abuse, memory loss, propensity for trances, sleep and eating disorders, distrust, detachment, lack of self-care, and distress or impairment at work.
Customer Reviews:

I didn't find the book particularly helpful, but if you are new to the subject of psychological disorders and dissociative disorders it may be helpful.
Got Parts? An Insider's Guide to Managing Life Successfully with Dissociative Identity Disorder (New Horizons in Therapy).......2007-08-09
Never received the book, only paid for it. Was in the States for over 1 months after order. Very dissapointed. Bad service!!!!!
Book Review: Got Parts?.......2007-07-28
Got Parts? An Insider's Guide to Managing Life Successfully with Dissociative Identity Disorder, is a practical guide for those with Dissociative Identity Disorder, previously called Multiple Personality Disorder.
The book covers everything from what Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is to how to find a good counselor to how to deal with life issues. I felt the book was complete except in the area of discussing the distinct, important spiritual aspects of DID. Like several earlier books, Got Parts? highlighted the importance of spiritual healing in DID. But also like several earlier books, Got Parts? limited spiritual healing to Christian ethics, which, since abusive people can choose to use any kind of ritual to abuse, can reinitiate abuse in the recovering DID individual.
A much more complete book is "The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook", published in 2001 by Conbtemporary Books and written by Deborah Bray Haddock. Ms. Haddock also discusses the importance of spiritual damage and the need for spiritual healing, but she emphasizes the need for nonjudgemental, overall spirituality rather than any one religious philosophy.
Helpful and clear for all........2007-05-13
This is a very clearly written book for the person with DID and for those who need a refresher or are new to DID. It is specific, positive, and affirming of the process and the need for therapy and support. I highly recommend it for therapists new to DID, and their DID clients.
Worst DID book I've read.......2007-04-25
I rarely write reviews, but after discussing this book with others who have and haven't read it, I felt the need to write and warn those with DID about it.
The tone in which it is written is very authoratative which can be quite difficult to handle for anyone who has survived trauma at the hands of authority figures. The terms "have to" and "need to" are used repeatedly. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the author was able to heal in the way she explains in this book, but it comes across as if she's saying it's the "only" way to go through the healing journey.
There are many parts that are difficult to handle in this book. One section that really got to me is when she's discussing what she sees as a need for alters to be aware of and know who's fronting all the time. Then she says they also "need to know and be able to identify who they are" if your therapist asks. She reiterates this saying the part who is out has to "be willing to answer the question 'Who's here?' or 'Who am I talking with?' " The final straw for me on this subject was when she said that answering "I don't know" or "nobody" are not acceptable and "shyness, game-playing, or simply 'being confused' are not going to help you-all...." Face it, there are times when alters who are untrusting need to be able to come "out" during therapy in order to learn to trust and not be so shy. It may take months before they're able to say their names, if they ever do. Some experts in the field question the need names at all and don't push those alters who don't have names to choose names.
I think that this type of book, where people who have recovered from DID explain their process of healing, are needed, but this one isn't it. There are a few good suggestions in the book, but if you edited out all the negatives, it would be a very short article. Don't waste your time on this like I did. Please, if you have DID, reconsider the purchase of this book.

Book Description
We all have memories of a book that stirred mind and soul; that became more resonant over time. When a book sweeps us away, we remember and tell people. Sharing the experience is a double gift: it reveals us meaningfully while extending the possibility of pleasure and insight to others.
YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK! is just such a double gift. In it, some of today's most interesting and prominent people share the books that have been transformational to them, and why. Readers will encounter well–known names in personal motivation, business, entertainment, and more, such as Malachy McCourt, Christiane Northrup, M.D., Dave Barry, Stephen Covey, Mark Victor Hansen, and John Gray, among others, as well as Canfield and Hendricks themselves. These essays will inspire, inform, and motivate readers to recall and pursue their own transforming experiences with books, charting a path to a more resonant life.

About half way through it. Many of the people are well known but I never knew of the problems or situations they faced. The reading of a book turning lives around and giving purpose to their lives. How simple but fantastic results.
waste of time and money........2007-04-25
a quickly slapped together collection of of this or that book from this or that person - might make a good magazine article but even then, I got nothing out of this book. Also be aware of the viral marketing going on for this book. Sad to say that its become a problem on Amazon.
You DON'T have to read this book!.......2007-03-12
What a total waste of time. If you read at all why read this when you could be reading some of the books mentioned. Half the people mentioned in this boook I've never heard of. Besides what other people find inspirational is not necessarily what you will. If you read books based on what some no name celebrities read, you need to expand your horizons a little.
Not Really...You Don't.......2007-03-03
I picked up this book hoping for a list of fascinating stories and biographies--and hoping there would be many new ideas for future reading. What a found was a list composed more of self-help books and spiritualist thinking (think New Age) than must read stories.
I could not finish this book, I was so disappointed in it; I got about half-way through. I could not recommend this book to anyone.

Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.
Overcome Adversity.......2007-04-12
Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.

Book Description
Losing a friend can be as painful and as agonizing as a divorce or the end of a love affair, yet it is rarely written about or even discussed. THE FRIEND WHO GOT AWAY is the first book to address this near-universal experience, bringing together the brave, eloquent voices of writers like Francine Prose, Katie Roiphe, Dorothy Allison, Elizabeth Strout, Ann Hood, Diana Abu Jabar, Vivian Gornick, Helen Schulman, and many others. Some write of friends who have drifted away, others of sudden breakups that took them by surprise. Some even celebrate their liberation from unhealthy or destructive relationships. Yet at the heart of each story is the recognition of a loss that will never be forgotten.
From stories about friendships that dissolved when one person revealed a hidden self or moved into a different world, to tales of relationships sabotaged by competition, personal ambition, or careless indifference, THE FRIEND WHO GOT AWAY casts new light on the meaning and nature of women’s friendships. Katie Roiphe writes with regret about the period in her life when even close friends seemed expendable compared to men and sex. Mary Morris reveals how a loan led to the unraveling of a lifelong friendship. Vivian Gornick explores how intellectual differences eroded the bond between once inseparable companions. And two contributors, once best friends, tell both sides of the story that led to their painful breakup.
Written especially for this anthology and touched with humor, sadness, and sometimes anger, these extraordinary pieces simultaneously evoke the uniqueness of each situation and illuminate the universal emotions evoked by the loss of a friend.

Chicken Soup for the ex friend's soul.......2007-01-25
Eh, it was ok.
It's a great topic but I didn't like the way it was done. Even though some of the stories were gripping in their sadness or inevitability, I agree with the reviewer who found the stories largely elitist.
My principal complaint, though, is with the sameness of the writing. I felt like I was reading the same contributor again and again--checking the author bios, they are all professional writers, which assures a quality of narrative but also makes the stories strangely "of a kind." (In this way, the also-introspective "Chicken Soup" books are superior; no matter what the topic a variety of lifestyles--a variety of "voices"--is represented.) If somehow some teachers or pipefitters or cartoonists or singers or somebody other than introspective writers had contributed, it would have been a more interesting title.
Could not put this book down . . . !.......2007-01-04
The topic of the book's collection of essays was especially relevant and important to me personally, having had a few friendships break up over the years. I loved all of the various perspectives from each essay writer from their personal filter of the series of events and issues that contirbuted to the demise of a friendship. I loved the fact that the essays covered a wide range of issues between friends (death, marriage, divorce, money, distance, careers etc.) and representative of various life stages in women's lives (school-aged, teenagers, young adults, 20-something, 30-something and beyond). This book captures the emotionally charged, intense and often complicated relationships that women have with one another. A very worthwhile read for anyone who has been puzzled by a friendship gone awry for one reason or another. Really terrific book, well-written, well-organized and well-conceived.
The Crucible of Women's Friendships.......2006-12-19
This is a wonderful book that most readers will enjoy. I think the vignettes or more illustrative of the vagaries of women's friendships, than, say, a more academic analysis of love, jealousy, betrayal and hurt feelings among friends.
My one and only complaint is that I hope she does a follow up book that looks at the same issue, but one that also includes online "friendships." I think that the increased use of myspace, facebook, and other bbs and online forums also provides fodder for this genre.
Nurture Your Girlfriends or the Frienship Will Die.......2006-06-04
Sometimes we grow apart, or our values radically alter, or the common interests die, whatever the case there are those relationships that whither away but are not a cause of discomfort in sudden run-ins. The ones that are, are sad.
The best piece of advice: NEVER let a man ruin a real love with a beloved girlfriend. Boyfriends are a waste of time compared to a true blue friend.
the best collection out there at this time on women's friendships.......2006-04-22
The best collection of objectively written yet heartfelt stories written by intelligent people. It's about women's secret, unspeakable competitiveness and inability to be truthful and/or tactful enough to stay friends.
I was struck by how nuanced and complicated women's friendships are: helped me see my own failed friendships under the light of inevitability, blamelessness, and hopelessness.
Most of the essays deal head on with the ugliness of competition, and not in a Glamor magazine type of glib way, but in a helpful, analytical yet readable way.

Top Notch- Simple- Easy to Implement.......2007-03-26
If you are looking for a simple system that doesn't require you to copy lists, type everything into your computer or become a slave to your PDA, then this book is certainly for you. I'm amazed that more people aren't familiar with this work and I'm lucky to have found it years ago. This book has helped me turn my paper mountains into organized and prioritized accomplishments. It helped me throw out the junk, keep the best items, and develop a system that keeps me organized and accomplishing more. This is a must read for anyone who wants to avoid the fancy books on time management.
THIS IS A SLEEPER TIME MANAGEMENT BOOK.......2006-10-28
This book is the best book on Time Management and priority setting ever written. I read this book about 12 years ago it helped me organize my day and set priorities on the important versus the urgent.
For example - you put a "1" next to all the items on your to do list that equal the important to your career/success/well-being/etc. The you put a "2" or "3" on the others that are less important. Then you go back over all the "1's" and put a 1,2 or 3 based upon the time it takes to do it. For example - something that should take a short time a "3"; a long time to do - a "1" . Then your "to do" list looks like "1-1" long time to do very important; a "1-3" is a short time to do, but very important; And you do all the 1-1's and 1-2's and 1-3's first before the 2-1's and 2-2's ... get it? Like if pick up laundry would be a "3-1" - it is not important but takes a long time to do (if you are working) and therefore not going to make it to the head of the list. It forces you to think and prioritize and DO THE THINGS THAT COUNT. And you keep a MASTER LIST where write everything .... UNBELIEVABLE!! A SHORT BOOK - and it tells you volumes!!! and it works!!
Must read for the Unorganized.......2004-04-25
The truth is that many of the quick fix techiniques and tips that are given to the many unorganized people as I used to be don't work well for long. I was on a quest to find out how to become organized my self and be part of the select few who seem to be born that way. By following what this books says I have been able to do it. See, many of the things that are believed to help aren't very effective, such as writing down things to do on an agenda that has times written down--doesn't work because its easy to be interrupted and not finish something on the alotted time etc. etc, but these are the foundations of personal organization. I have observed that these also happen to be the things that real organized people actually do. Now they might seem simple, but these book truly brings all the aspects of personal organization together--the three pillars as i like to call them, which with one missing, the other two fall in despair and chaos once again. Master List, Master filing system, and a clean work area--sound simple, it is, but trust me, read the book. Easy read, and well worth your time if you're disorganized--true testimonial form me, I can't stress it enough. My word.
weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2004-02-17
Occasionally a book comes along that is short, a pleasure to read and truly helpful. If You Haven't Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time To Do It Over is such a book. Mayer has spent much of his career as a time management consultant and he has written a basic primer for those interested in organizing their lives to a greater degree.
Most of us are being required to do more work with fewer people. How to get this increased workload accomplished is a common problem. Mayer asks, "But are we really increasing our productivity, or just the number of hours we work?" He then offers a solution. The key to getting work done is not simply to work harder and longer but smarter! Better organization is a solution. This book is centered on the principle of "save time by wasting less of it!" The author uses his vast experience to offer ideas, techniques, and concepts to save time and use it more effectively.
If You Haven't Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time To Do It Over provides common sense ideas that really work if we are willing to apply them. Being creatures of habit we tend to do things because that is the way they have typically been done. Mayer has boldly stepped out of the habitual routine to find ways to overcome daily obstacles to time and productivity. He attempts to show how time can be saved in "small pieces" rather than in large blocks. He ponders, "Save thirty seconds every five minutes, and by the end of the day, you've saved an hour." The book is divided into two parts. The first part shows you how to organize your workspace including your office, files management and desk. The second part shows you how to streamline your entire business to become more productive and organized.
This is a useful and rewarding book. If it helps you to change only one routine in your life due to its beneficial ideas it will have served a valuable purpose. Easy to read and understand from cover to cover!
I first read this book in 1993 and still use it today........2001-08-10
Unfortunately, I later handed it off to a coworker who was struggling with organization. It's definitely a "read it once" type of book. My disorganized boss continuously comments on my organizational skills, so I've decided to pick up a copy for her as well as another coworker and replace my own.
