5 out of 5 stars Step-by-step guide that is a GREAT reference!.......2004-01-13

I am currently a Ph.D. student and have had a number of upper-level stat courses. I first received this book toward the end of the required stat courses (Multivariate Methods)...boy, do I wish I had it sooner. Everything is laid out in concise format, it is easy to read, and the material is relevant. Plus, there are also sample APA results sections in each portion. It is a great resource that any grad student should purchase! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

5 out of 5 stars Your personalized statistics, SPSS, and APA tutor!.......2003-09-05

I first used this book in grad school where I actually took a class from Sam Green. I have been keeping it handy ever since. Every chapter explains the statistical test (purpose, background), gives a couple of applied examples, then takes you through SPSS step by step (what options to click on, etc.), shows you the results and how to interpret each based on the example given at the beginning, and then shows you how to write it all up in APA style (what to italicize, where to put spaces, etc., plus how to express it in words). It is the most useful and practical and easy to understand stats book (or stats teacher) I ever encountered. I highly recommend it to everyone, grad students, researchers, academics.

5 out of 5 stars Analyzing and Understanding Data.......2003-06-27

A more appropriate name for the book would be "Analyzing and Understanding Data Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh" to underscore the book's usefulness when one is analyzing data and wants explanations of the statistical procedures. This book is not only helpful to those who conduct quantitative research, but also helpful to students enrolled in applied statistics courses, in general research methods, and any course that involve the analysis of quantitative data. The book is very useful because the authors provide many chapters (i.e., lessons) with research examples of applicability, brief explanations of statistical procedures, discussions of underlying assumptions, step-by-step instructions using research examples (with data), descriptions of interpreting the illustrated SPSS output, and reporting the written or table results in APA style.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It serves the purpose........2003-04-08

In the past I have been quite critical regarding the quality of this book. I had found it tedious, overly descriptive, and lacking of significant examples.
In the meanwhile I have been using this book consistently because I needed information and verifications regarding the design of a challenging study. Well, I had to change my mind regarding my doubts and skepticism, and now I feel that I must vote in favor of the book.
Research is not exactly a walk on the beach, and this is certainly not a "beach" book. Research requires lots of patience, and very systematic people willing to devote much of their time for the sake of science. This book should be approached in a similar fashion, and with the intent and will to learn. If the reader establishes such a relation with this textbook, she/he will find most of her/his questions answered.
Aside the above praises, the author should consider to add practical examples to theory. This suggestion could be of great help to students willing to stay focused on a stimulating problem, and without ending up lost somewhere in the middle of the path.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Research Methods and Statistics.......2000-11-14

I never thought that I would understand statistics, but this book proved me wrong! The explanations were very detailed and tailored for people who have not previously taken a statistics course. I highly recommend this book, especially for those in the psychology field...

1 out of 5 stars overkill.......2000-02-14

The material is good, but the author get to involved to soon in the text. It is a must to sort through what information you need and the excess! I do not think that this is a good text for a student new to statistics. Examples are poor and brief.

"An invaluable resource for any college and university striving to meet the National Cost Commission's call to make what colleges do and what it costs more 'transparent' to the public."
--Jacqueline E. King, director, federal policy analysis, American Council on Education

Defining and measuring faculty productivity are among the most central issues for quality and accountability in higher education. Known for assembling some of the most authoritative research on faculty productivity--and for analyzing its impact on academic and institutional accountability--Michael F. Middaugh presents this comprehensive volume to help campus professionals build greater accountability for students, parents, foundations, governmental organizations, and other concerned constituents. Middaugh first draws from a research study funded by TIAA-CREF's Cooperative Research Grant Program and the Fund for Postsecondary Education within the U.S. Department of Education. He then provides a new framework for analyzing faculty efficiency and emphasizes how the results of faculty work can become the best indicators of productivity. He also applies the joint study findings to the task of developing benchmarks for faculty productivity. Practitioners from any type of campus will find a rich array of data, valuable recommendations, and relevant examples.

I ordered this book for self study, not for any class. There are no answers; they're all in the instructor's manual, which you cannot purchase if you're not an instructor. Calls to the publisher were met with indifference. The book itself is great, but if I already knew the answers I wouldn't have needed the book!

    Book Description

The development of a vibrant private sector is central to promoting growth and expanding opportunities for poor people. It is well recognized that encouraging firms to invest, improve productivity and create jobs requires the right legal and regulatory environment - including protection of property rights, access to credit, and efficient judicial, taxation and customs systems. But less is known about detailed legal and regulatory reforms and specific institutions needed to create a favorable environment for doing business. Drawing on new applied research and existing expert commentary, as well as lessons from extensive World Bank Group (WBG) work, the Doing Business report will help identify specific regulations that constrain business investment, productivity, and growth. The Report will contribute to broader initiatives to monitor development effectiveness by providing new, quantitative indicators on business regulations and their enforcement, which can be compared across 133 countries and over time. It will also provide a mechanism to integrate the many perspectives on the business climate, from both within and outside of the WBG.

    Download Description

An important new annual publication from the World Bank, Doing Business in 2004 provides both qualitative and quantitative information on the business climate in over 130 countries. Doing Business constructs a new set of indicators on the regulatory environment for private sector development and provides a collection of informative case studies of real-life experiences. Doing Business in 2004 covers the fundamental aspects of a business life cycle, from starting a business to bankruptcy. Topics include access to credit, bankruptcy, entry regulations, contract enforcement, and labor regulations. Unique in its approach, Doing Business provides both the accurate data and in-depth analysis necessary to assess the environment for doing business, and offers answers to these critical questions: Which is the most expensive country for starting a new business? Which countries have the most rigid regulations on hiring and firing? Which countries have the most extensive business entry procedures? Why does heavy regulation lead to inefficiency and corruption? What countries are most efficient in the area of contract enforcement? How do clearly-defined property rights enhance prosperity? What are the most successful regulatory models? Why? Over the next two years, Doing Business will address additional topics, indicator sets will be updated and the collection of case-studies added to. Through its ambitious agenda, Doing Business will provide an understanding of business environments throughout the world, the factors that influence them, and how conducive they are to private sector development. Doing Business is a comprehensive resource for investors, economic advisers, business developers and policymakers.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why are poor countries poor?.......2004-02-15

If you want to know the answer to this question, Doing Business in 2004 is your book.

Various eminent scholars have put forth theories as to why the rich countries get richer and the poor stay poor, including theories about culture, religion, geography, climate, trade openness, political regimes, and even accidents of history. Doing Business puts forth a compelling, and much simpler, story. Poor countries stay poor because their governments intervene excessively in business activity, driving entrepreneurs into informality. Growth is retarded, as is democracy, since many people are left in the fringes of economic and social life.

Lots of statistics on starting a business, hiring and firing workers, getting credit, and the like. Makes you appreciate how easy we have it here!

      Book Description

Statistical Process Control, or SPC, is one of the most misunderstood and underused tools in modern business practice. SPC: Practical Understanding of Capability by Implementing Statistical Process Control, third edition debunks the myth that SPC is only for engineers or technical managers. In fact, SPC is the proper set of tools for any operation where a product is created using a continuously repeated process. This is true for both manufacturing and service industries (sometimes the "product" is actually a service to people.) Author James Abbott uses everyday language to explain WHAT makes SPC work, WHY it will work for every situation, and HOW it fits into the overall decision-making process. This third edition of SPC is the result of years of feedback and refinement. An expanded appendix provides complete glossaries of terms, constants, formulas, and a practice question and answer section.

1 out of 5 stars This author doesn't know the first thing about statistics.......2001-08-12

I think that it is sad that a book of such extremely poor technical quality, which the author believes is "practical understanding", fools so many people who do not understand statistics themselves. If you have not been exposed to statistics for sometime, or have always wanted to learn statistical methods, then this should not be your first book. Anyone who has been exposed to a good book on statistics, or attended a class or seminar on statistics, will quickly see that this book contains numerous incorrect definitions and interpretations of statistical terms and methods. A book review of this book by noted statistician, Lloyd Nelson (who is an ASQ Fellow and Shewhart medalist) appeared in the April 2001 issue of the Journal of Quality Technology.

As an example, the author defines the binomial distribution as one which has two modes, which he has confused with the biMODal distribution. The range is defined as the (data point - average), which would produce both positive and negative values. Of course, the range is known (by everyone else except the author) as the difference between the largest and smallest values of a set of data, so it can never assume a negative value. His discussion of control charts also demonstrates a lack of understanding as to their use and the underlying distributions on which they are based. For instance, his statement that the binomial and Poisson distributions are a special case of the normal distribution is blatantly incorrect. The list of examples goes on and on, and many more can be found in Nelson's book review.

The best advice this reviewer can give someone shopping for an easy to read and credible book on statistics is to pass this one up, save your money, and keep looking. If you subscribe to one of the journals of ASQ (American Society for Quality), namely the Journal of Quality Technology and Technometrics, then read their book reviews. The reviewers are very knowledgable and are composed of Senior Members and Fellows who have considerable practical and theoretical knowledge. They can offer valuable information on which books give the best value for the money.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book for SPC users.......2001-08-01

This text is one of the worst in terms of technical merit and correctness. The author obviously does not have much of an idea about statistics and how to implement SPC....

      5 out of 5 stars "Practical".......2001-06-24

" The word practical in the book's subtitle says it all. The book has a decision making focus (still has the math). This really clarified everything for me. Not just a math book but a how to make SPC work for you. The idea of different tools for strategic and tactical decisions was new and refreshing."

5 out of 5 stars Statistics made easy.......2003-01-23

I always approach statistics and their applications with great trepidation, but this handbook really makes using and creating statistics easy.

The book is broken up into several kinds of statistical tests and explains the criteria needed for each test, as well as what the test can be used for. As an information professional, my need for statistics is very focused, and this book on statistics for knowledge workers weeds out extraneous information, as well as tests that are far too complicated for an amateur to interpret.

The author includes specific instructions for running statistical tests on Excel, as well as SSPS. She guides you through step by step analysis of your data, and manages to be very encouraging at the same time!

A great resource for your library.
