Book Description
Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, whose books on death and dying have sold in the millions, now offers an extraordinary visual record of her work. Through the brilliant photographs of Mal Warshaw, To Live Until We Say Good-Bye gives a gripping, intimate view of Dr. Kübler-Ross's counseling work with terminally ill patients as she brings them to an acceptance of death.
Customer Reviews:
An exceptionally moving work that showcases true courage, love, grace and hope for all, a real gift. .......2005-10-24
The book, To Live Until We Say Good-Bye, is not your common book on dying and grief or even the medical psychology of it, as is quite internationally acknowledged with many of Kubler-Ross's previous works, i.e. On Death and Dying and On Children and Death, et cetera. Rather, out of all of her works (Kubler-Ross), I would have to say that this one is the most accessible and the most outright, in-your-face emotional, the one that really tugs at the heartstrings. But it is a work that does so in a positive, open and meaningful way. Medical and psychiatric jargon is totally set aside and the four dying patients-for whom this book is about-Beth, Jamie, Louise and Jack, are allowed to come to the forefront, to have their stories and experiences related to those (the readers) who are living or could possible be dying themselves. Accompanied by the well written text of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and the varied contributors are the affecting black and white photographs by Mal Warshaw, photos taken of the very subjects in their assorted states in the dying process. Nothing is held back in respects to the people who are profiled-the good, the bad and the ugly-yet dignity unequivocally pervades. In this book, we meet a former model (Beth), who to the very end, clung to her physical beauty as her paramount asset. However, her written poetry illustrated her articulate and intelligent substance that went way beyond looks: "Voices whispering, Beth, Beth/You can no longer stay/Hand reaching out to grasp/Helping me on my way./I'll no longer ache with sorrow/No longer feel this pain/So adieu and fare thee well now/I shan't see thee again. (P. 37). Also, we meet 71-year-old Jack, a former construction worker and rebounding alcoholic who sadly, lived to see his son die of lung cancer. But he found redemption and purpose by building doll houses for charity while as a patient at St. Rose's Home, run by the Hawthorne Dominicans in New york City. Through the series of photographs, his religious and psychological evolution becomes clearly evident, and it is a humbling and beautiful thing to see. And it is so for all those profiled, especially for Jamie and Louise, the other two patients who become are teachers. And their chapters are equally moving and powerful, if not more so. There too is an in-depth chapter on the fantastic work done by hospice and the heroics of everyday volunteers, people young and old who do not give "all" of themselves in order to give the best of themselves. All in all, To Live Until We Say Good-Bye is another great work that looks at life's final journey.
Elisabeth revealed our simplicity through the complexity .......2005-07-09
This book has taught me to experience the words that may have never been spoken if I had not of encountered Kubler~Ross through her work with the dying. We have a need to thank her for the journey she took ....
Kubler Rosss Second Best Hit.......2005-06-04
Kubler Ross- got this book right. The many telling photographs intermixed with very personal accounts of the dying and their family and friends makes for a moving and compelling journey into the emotions, experiences, challenges, disappointments of the dying.
The right balance between peronsal narratives, the authors commentary and photographs was achieved in this book- a feat most books on death and dying do not. Couple this book with Donald Heinzs book The Last Passage and as a friend, relative or caretaker of the dying youll have insight and knowledge into the world of the dying and some insights on what to do when someone you care about is dying.
Living with Dying.......1997-03-05
Reading a book about confrontations with death and dying by the terminal ill and by their families and loved ones may not sound like anyone's idea of "escapist fare" or a good rainy day pick-me-up, but this large picture book is first and foremost about the value of life and living. Undoubtedly one of the most "important" books I have read, To Live Until We Say Good-Bye spotlights three personal stories: a New York City poet and model dying of cancer, a young girl suffering with a brain tumor, and an older woman who refuses treatment of her illness to lead the remainder of her life in her own home. The stories are remarkable because there is a touching sense of revelation to each--that none of them had perhaps lived so fully and completely until they learned time was running out. The young girl's story, "Jamie," is especially moving because it not only deals with her concerns and fears about her future, but also those of her single mother and her young brother--and, ultimately, although the process of losing a loved one is unimaginably painful, the family is able to find some peace in their ability to make the final days meaningful--and full of life. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross narrates the stories, and Mal Warshaw provides the photographs; together, they have assembled an unpretentious and dignified lesson about seeking the value in life--surely, a message that is beneficial to and yet overlooked very often by us all

Book Description
Your child has a bike riding accident. A friend undergoes surgery. Your father has a chronic pain condition. One day, maybe sooner, maybe later, someone close to you will experience a medical emergency. Health issues escape no one. Knowing CPR and other techniques is great - but not enough. What do you say when you've done all you can?
The Worst Is Over is Verbal First Aid to calm, relieve pain, promote healing, and save lives. It will give you the words to say to let the healing begin. We all know that the words we chose can raise our blood pressure, make us smile, or bring tears to our eyes. It only makes sense that the power of works can also positively affect a person's heart rate, temperature, breathing, cardiovascular, limbic, endocrine, circulatory and respiratory systems during an emergency situation.
This groundbreaking work, substantiated by medical science, and already being used by emergency care professionals across the country, will become a standard in every home. Endorsed by professionals across the country, it is already in demand by the media.

The Worst Is Over: What to Say When Every Moment Counts.......2007-06-18
The book is a fantastic primer for first responder or any other person who may be involved in an emergency. Best I have ever read; well written and with sensitivity.
Good basics - not in much depth.......2007-05-15
The idea of "verbal first aid" fascinates me. How much can we do with words alone in a crisis? Judith Acosta's book says we can do quite a lot -calm people down, make them feel safe, even promote healing.
Most of her techniques are drawn from guided imagery and hypnosis - stuff I was already very familiar with. I describe some of this experience in my book "The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health when You Have a Chronic Illness" (available on Amazon). But if you don't know much about imagery, some of this might be a revelation to you.
I wish there had been more specific examples and ideas - a lot of it is too general for me. It was a worthwhile read, but I didn't learn as much as I had hoped.
Outstanding.......2006-12-11
I am a professional hypnotist, also firefighter and completing paramedic training at this writing. I'm surprised to see only one reader review of this fine piece of work, so I'd like to second exactly what Dr. Levenson wrote above. Definitely an extremely valuable piece of work.
The Worst Is Over: What to Say When Every Moment Counts.......2002-03-20
Beautifully written - eloquent, thoughtful, sensitive and, at the same time, scholarly and professional - this book is a "must read" for physicians, psychologists, social workers, police, fire, emergency personnel - in short, anyone who responds to crises and knows that the right words can soothe, promote healing, and initiate psychological recovery. The Worst Is Over takes the reader through a discovery of how Verbal First Aid is used to ease physical pain, conquer traumatic events, and work through emotional dysfunction. The book provides a "new language" to be employed in a vast variety of stressful, traumatic, and life-changing events. It excels as a training manual for interpersonal interaction. In view of the events of September 11, 2001, The Worst Is Over is mandatory reading for anyone with a colleague, friend, or family member suffering the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. A chapter for Caregivers is also provided. The Worst Is Over is sure to become a classic and serve as a reference point for how to deal with the uncertainties in our lives in this time.

"Everything we say to each other echoes with meanings left over from our past experience--both our history talking to the person before us at this moment and our history talking to others," says Deborah Tannen, one of the world's most famous linguists. We react not only to the message, but to the "metamessage": our interpretation of the unstated meaning, based on tone, relationship, and our past associations. Add in the connections and control issues among family members, and it's no wonder families have so much trouble understanding each other!
I Only Say This Because I Love You is aimed mostly at adult family interactions. Professor Deborah Tannen, the popular author of You Just Don't Understand, uses anecdotes filled with dialogues to illustrate why we hear criticism when the other person meant to convey caring, how family members create alignments with secrets and broken confidences, the dynamics of arguments, the power of apologies, gender patterns in family talk, and communication with teens. You're bound to recognize your family members--and yourself!--in Tannen's examples.
You won't find quick, easy answers for improving communication in your family, but you will discover another dimension of understanding what's really going on. Now if you could just get your mother to read the book! --Joan Price
Book Description
Why does talk in families so often go in circles, leaving us tied up in knots? In this illuminating book, Deborah Tannen, the linguist and and bestselling author of
You Just Don't Understand and many other books, reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic even when we're all adults. Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism and judgment? In
I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages — unstated but powerful meanings that come from the history of our relationships and the way things are said. Presenting real conversations from people's lives, Tannen reveals what is actually going on in family talk, including how family conversations must balance the longing for connection with the desire for control, as we struggle to be close without giving up our freedom.
This eye-opening book explains why grown women so often feel criticized by their mothers; and why mothers feel they can't open their mouths around their grown daughters; why growing up male or female, or as an older or younger sibling, results in different experiences of family that persist throughout our lives; and much, much more. By helping us to understand and redefine family talk, Tannen provides the tools to improve relationships with family members of every age.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous new insights to relationships of all kinds.......2002-02-13
Chapter 1 of Tannen's latest book provides some fabulous new insights to relationships of all kinds. Her discussions of the connection-control schema and meta-messages concept allow the reader to gain new perspectives on those sometimes frustrating interactions with loved ones (or coworkers, or strangers...). The rest of the book is really just "gravy" on top of the information in Chapter 1. Wow, I loved this book-- a definite recommendation to anyone interested in better understanding relationship communication (I see my mother's "advice," formerly a source of frustration/anger, in a whole new light!).
I Only Say This to be Honest.......2001-08-25
Would that it were true that family relationships came down to the words we use when we talk to one another. Tannen tries to wrestle complex family dynamics into conversational styles, and fails dismally. Much of the "insights" are superficial, suggestions for improving relationships minimal, and the examples provided are tedious and boring. I had high hopes for this book but it provided little that was useful to me.
Solid Information, but haven't we heard it before?.......2001-08-20
I loved Tannen's _You Just Don't Understand_ because of the fresh insights it provided, so I was especially disappointed when _I Only Say This Because I Love You_ failed to provide the same feeling of discovery and excitement.
The book focuses on the frequent difference between the actual words that are spoken, and the meaning behind the words (meta-message), which is often about trying to create more connectedness or to alter the power and control dynamics of the relationship.
I found it interesting, but not revolutionary (and I'd come to expect revolutionary from Dr. Tannen).
By understanding the meta-messages both from ourselves and from others, we should have more power to address the meta-messages directly and not get involved in petty bickering and emotional responses that go nowhere except round-and-round.
Overall, I would say that the book contains useful insights and helpful advice, but for people who have already spent time analyzing their intimate relationships, there's probably not much new.
why can't you communicate with so-and-so? find out!.......2001-08-13
I considered myself a good communicator. Then I read this book. It brought things to my attention that I was unaware of, about how I communicate with those closest to me. I was confronted with my own mistakes, in a way that I could not deny, and it motivated me to work on those areas right away! I also saw everybody else I know in this book--because it is about the mistakes we all make. It encompasses all of the different family relationships there are, goals of communication, why certain communication styles don't work, and suggestions for making it easier. The best chapter of all was called "I'm sorry, I'm not apologizing." It talked about why women apologize more than men, why apologizing is harder for men, power issues involved with apologizing, issues around accepting responsibility, and most importantly, the key components of a good apology. I will definitely have a better marriage as a result of reading this book, and I will be recommending it to everyone I know. It was interesting reading, and for me, hard to put down. It is an accessable and very knowledgable reference.
Insightful reference on the levels of how we communicate.......2001-08-08
Exceptional reference for the verbal and the non verbal communicator. Best analogy "Do you hear what I mean?" As a wife of a non verbal communicator and a mother of three one who masters the english language and has strong communication skills to the youngest who struggle with basic communication, I have personally found this title to be instrumental in navigating through our own family and our verbal form of expression.
When exposed to those that struggle with the command of the english language I have had to learn new ways to communicate. This tile is completely on target and goes to posture, stance, tone and so much more.
How our presentation can make a positive or negative impact on the receiver. Often our intent of caring is misunderstood due to our presentation and/or the preconceived disposition of our intended audience.
After reading I was able to grasp the fact that sometimes no matter what was said it was improperly "processed." Truly it is the processing that counts most. Understanding that not everyone processes the same information in the same fashion can be eye opening and yet become an obvious reality.
The author drives home that we need to educate and understand and to be educated and understanding with our communication skills.

Here can be found the only known recordings of speeches by Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey; Mary McLeod Bethune answering the question, "What does Democracy Mean to me?"; Dick Gregory describing his experience of being locked in a Birmingham jail; Barbara Jordan's unforgettable defense of the U.S. Constitution during Nixon's impeachment hearings; Julian Bond's sharp assessment of school segregation on the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board, and much more. Customer Reviews:
Plainly Stated.......2006-03-28
Say It Plain is a must-have addition to anyone's library of African-American literature. The speeches included in this book/audio CD allow the reader/listener to delve into the thoughts of some of the greatest African-American orators of the past century. To reflect upon what was said decades ago and quickly come to the realization that what was stated then can still be said today and still be relevant is simply amazing, if not unsettling. For example, more than a quarter of a century ago Rev. Joseph Lowery spoke on issues such as the rising rate of Black unemployment, the lack of Black leaders in American government and the ratio of the Black population in the United States (11%, at the time) to number of enlisted persons in the military who were black (33.3%, at the time).
Although Say It Plain misses the mark by excluding of one of the most powerful African-American orators, Malcom X, it is still nonetheless comprehensive. One should appreciate the diverse group of orators who are included; from Marcus Garvey and his Black Separatist views to Clarence Thomas and his politically conservative views. Moreover, listening to the accompanying audio CD, one will get a sense of the different oratory styles: Jesse Jackson's inspirational "I was born in the slum, but the slum was not born in me.", Dick Gregory's comedic "...the good old days was 10 B.C., 15 B.C. .........10, 15 years before Bull Connor.", and Johnetta B. Cole's charge to her African-American sisters to "Defend Thy Name".
Say It Plain is not just twenty-plus speeches that were transcribed, placed in chronological order, and sold as a book. Before each speech there is a brief introduction that provides the reader with some context: a historical perspective of the speaker, the events of the time, or simply when, where and why the speech was given. In many cases, this brief introduction is as significant as the speech itself.
All in all, I would suggest taking a refresher course in African-American history - with a twist - and read and listen to Say It Plain. Your mind and spirit will thank you for it.

I loved this book. I read it in one evening because each page was so inspiring. Simon is empowering, energetic and thought provoking. He is spiritual without being preachy and knows how to push you to dig deep to find what it is that truly makes you happy. I will no longer live each day being passionless, I will find within myself those things that are at my true core of happiness and follow them to find my career and life dreams. This book changed my life in one evening and I know when I go back and read it again and again I will find new inspiration each time.
this book is fantastic.......2004-07-27
I've read tons of self help and improvement books. It was so refreshing to pick up Simon's book and read it cover to cover in one setting. This book goes way beyond a self help/improvement book. It actually give you the tools to make significant changes in your life and provides you with how to, step-by-step. I've seen Simon speak in person, and wow what an experience! His book just continues the Simon exprence for me. I've read it three times already and will continue to refer back to it when i need a refresher.
Eye Opening.......2003-10-13
Everyone comes to a point in their life when they ask themselves, is this the life I want to be leading? Even though my career isn't within the corporate world this book helped me identify and address certain aspects and issues that can be improved upon, changed or eliminated from my life. If you have reached this cross-road in your life this book is a must read!
Read it... then read it AGAIN!.......2003-10-07
Reading this book is almost like having Simon in the room with you, cheering you along. His personality and energy jumps off the pages. His encouragement is sincere and his passion is infectious. I have seen him speak, and was amazed that so much enthusiasm can come from one person!! If you have not seen him speak... DO! If you can book him to speak for your organization... DO IT! If you have not read this book yet... READ IT!
I recommend reading the book once, but skip the journal exercises. Then go back and spend a whole day going through the book again and doing the exercises. If you can devote one day to working through them, and truly focus on your passion, I think you will find this book to be an invaluable guide to finding what you are looking for in your life. As Simon says, "DREAM BIG!" Who better to learn from than someone who just did it!?
What Are You Passion About.......2003-08-26
Many people spend most of their lives in unfulfilled professions, working twelve hour days and limited time spent with loved ones, to remain in a position they no longer enjoy. Job security is almost non-existent after September 11 and the American Dream no longer seems obtainable. Motivational Speaker and founder of the Imagination Institute, Simon T. Bailey, offers insight of transforming your dreams and aspirations into reality. Simon Says Dream: Live a Passionate Life is an inspiring and practical guide to reaching your fullest potential whether professional, personal or spiritual.
Simon shares the testimony of Auke Hempenius, co-owner and creative director of a men's fashion boutique in Winter Park, Florida as a prime example of finding your passion regardless of how much money you will make. This story was the most inspiring for this reviewer, in that Simon reminds us when you tap into your spiritual wealth, resources will materialize as needed. Another story worth mentioning is that of Marian Luna Bremsha. After battling breast and cervical cancer, this mother of two strived and questioned the status quo by choosing a career in the male dominated car sales industry. In one year Marian became Salesperson of the year and five years later owned her own dealership with an impressive portfolio. And lastly, Simon shares his personal testimony when early in his hospitality career he declined a favorable offer from Ritz Carlton Hotels. What may have seemed like a foolish move, empowered Simon to negotiate with his then present employer, upward mobility from front desk clerk into management. This same tenaciousness resulted in several employment opportunities and Simon's latest venture as creative financial officer of the Imagination Institute.
At the end of each chapter Simon reviews the vital steps to living more passionately and a journal to record your thoughts. Whether you are a CEO at a major corporation, on the brink of entrepreneurship or have a hobby you'd like to turn into a career, Simon Says Dream will inspire you to unleash your hidden potential. I recommend Simon Says Dream for your personal library and to ask yourself are you living a passionate life?

Book Description
Say It And Live It is the first collection of provocative, passionate, and intelligent corporate mission statements -- the most powerful and popular managerial tool in business today. A corporate mission statement is the most dramatic presentation of a company's vision and its goal. No other document -- annual report, press release, news article, statement from the board of directors -- tells us more about a company's values and ethics than a mission statement. Companies know that if they write it down, they will have to live up to it -- so they devote months, even years, the energy of people from the CEO on down, and significant sums of money to crafting them. Say It And Live It is the only source of information for the many business people who are presently writing their own mission statements. In it, authors Patricia Jones and Larry Kahaner show that industry leaders are frequently corporations that truly live their mission statements. Some of the winners include: Avis, Ben & Jerry's, Boeing, Citicorp, General Electric, Gillette, Hallmark Cards, IBM, Kellogg's, Reader's Digest, Saturn, Southwest Airlines, UPS, and Xerox. Say It And Live It is a collection of the fifty best corporate mission statements in America. Each entry consists of the company's complete mission statement, along with an explanation of how it was written, a lesson about how that mission statement saved the company or motivated employees, or comments from the CEO or the president. The introduction points out the common elements of these philosophical documents, while the final chapter is a list of tips on how you can write your own mission statement.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating and informative business book.......2000-04-04
Say It and Live It goes beyond mere words and offers cases studies about companies that have produced and used mission statements to further their own goals, produce more profits and beat the competition. The authors show in step by step fashion how your company can craft a mission statement that really works.
This is an excellent, readable book that delivers on what it promises.
I highly recommend it. Say It and Live It is a book you'll want to read twice -- maybe three times!

Makes time management seem easy.......2006-10-24
How to Say No and Live to Tell About It by Mary M. Byers is a practical guide for busy women. If you lack assertiveness, and have trouble prioritizing your commitments, this book may be for you. Byers writes from her own experiences as a busy woman, offering advice and inspiration to get through the day.
Extremely short chapters make reading this thin volume a breeze--a must for the busy women Byers is writing for. Surely Byers, who is a professional speaker and freelance writer, uses some of her own tips to manage her packed schedule.
The one downfall of How to Say No and Live to Tell About It is the way Byers uses Bible verses. She quoted a few verses completely out of context and used others to apply to different topics than they were originally meant to reference. It is almost as if Byers wrote a useful book on time management, and then decided she wanted to market it to a Christian audience as an afterthought, interspersing the Bible verses later.
Despite this issue, How to Say No and Live to Tell About It makes the daunting tasks of time management and assertiveness development seem easy for even the busiest of women. Bible verses that apply to the topic at hand in the correct context would make this book more worthwhile.[...]

I learned something useful about saying "No" just flipping through the pages. This is a helpful read for women who tend to resist saying a firm "No" and get over-committed. I like the comparison of Naysayers and No-Sayers (p. 76), the "don't do" list (p. 108), and the Taking Action and Discovery Questions at the end of each chapter. Could be a personal study guide or used in a group.

If you're a yes, person-- read this book!.......2006-04-28
Whether you are a people pleaser or a yes-aholic, this book gets to the root of why it is ingrained in women to be available to everyone.
After reading this book I discovered I was overloaded with commitments, not enjoying myself AND unable to remember why I said yes!
Mary reminds us that as Christians we are to be mindful of God's covenant to each other--love each other as we would love God. Yet when the act of saying yes becomes a mindless action we lose touch with this covenant.
This is a workbook that anyone can pick up as an introduction to making life manageable and fun or as a refresher course on how to stay present in our lives into.
Armchair Interviews says: If you are a sometimes unhappy "yes" person, check out this book's message.
find joy by saying NO.......2006-04-11
Lately, I've been looking for ways to be more joyful. One of the things that can steal our joy is being too busy doing things that we really don't want to do, according to Mary Byers' new book. She encourages readers to look at why they have trouble saying no, and begin to say it, "rather than letting a sense of obligation dictate your life."
This is a very practical book with extremely short, to the point chapters-great for people who are too busy to read. Each chapter ends with a "taking action" step and "discovery questions" to help you apply the lessons of each chapter, which cover important topics like passion, simplicity, focus, guilt, fatigue.
For those who have trouble saying that little word that brings back sanity and joy in your life: "no," this book will be a life-saver. But the idea is not necessarily to say no to everything, but to determine your passion, your focus and what brings you joy, and say yes to that!
She writes, "When you apply focus to your passion and priorities, you'll not only be more effective, but you'll find contentment and inner joy as well."
This is a practical book that's easy to read, but really pushes you to apply what you learn. if you have trouble saying no, say yes to picking up a copy of this book and reading it!
Personal, Practical Advice for Prioritizing Life.......2006-04-02
This book struck a nerve or two.
Often, as I read it, I felt like Mary was talking directly to me. And she made it easy to listen! She wasn't condemning me ... she was relating to me. She's been there, done that, and offers practical advice to those of us who may struggle with saying no or yes to the appropriate opportunities.
It won't happen over night, I'm sure, but I'm working on creating my very own "noasis."
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to better manage their time and gifts, answer God's call and feel confident about their decisions.
Proud to be a "no-queen" in training!
