1 out of 5 stars Very little real-world info........2005-07-06

I did at times like the "war stories" written by the authors and being former Navy, I thought I would be able to carry over some of the teachings into the fire service. This books tried to allow a SEAL to share his war stories to a business section of the population. I had very little that can be carried over and wasn't written very well at all. Maybe if the format of the book was done different it might have had an easier time hitting it's point. It was a very hard read too.

2 out of 5 stars Too obvious.......2005-05-06

This stuff is all pretty obvious and can be learned anywhere, not just in the environment of a SEAL team. We could have called this "Leadership Lessons of the Plastic Injection Molding Production Supervisors" or "Leadership Lessons of the Rental Car Management Trainees." Seriously. The SEAL stories were nice, but I was expecting some powerful lessons learned under the stressful conditions of special operations combat. The "how many officers does it take to put up a tent" example wasn't exactly the impactful example that I was looking for. I, too, was a naval officer and could generate better illustrations of these leadership and management skills from my mundane times on a surface ship. No need to slap the SEAL trident on the cover, though I guess it would sell more books.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for aspiring leaders. .......2005-03-01

This book is the most accessible leadership book i've read recently. It is presented as a case by case basis (The Misson) with lessons learned from it (The Take Away), albeit in a corny way.

Those who are military buffs will surely enjoy this book, however, the corporate world is a far different outfit. The best example from the book would be the case where the officers of the same rank were placed together to pitch a tent in the dark. Due to that, everyone was barking orders to each other in order to stand out and appear superior.

It is almost impossible to reprimand your subordinates without risking a resignation and the balance between enforcing your right as a superior and eliciting favours is a fine line. My philosophy of leadership is fairly simple. Lay down the expectations from day one, and hire those who can accept those expectations, never force someone to do something that they are not willing to do (Chapter 4, Lesson 1). You cannot trim down your troops through attrition in the corporate organization (no boot camps here) by piling so much work that your employees quit and only the best remain. There's just not enough time and not enough people to complete any project implementation. Only a handful of organizations can do that ie. Nordstrom via psychological preasure rather than physical.

Chapter 3 focuses on building leadership, while chapter 4 focuses on being a grunt. 2 sides of the coin which are highly important. In summary, a must read. (Highly recommend, Built to Last)

4 out of 5 stars SEAL examples make this book standout.......2004-08-09

This book clearly sets itself apart from othe management books with its many Navy Seal examples and how they can be applied to business world situations. Those who have any interest in how the military functions will enjoy Leadership Lessons.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-06-12

If you've declared war on your company's lackluster performance, this book will help you launch an all-out assault. Leadership Lessons of the Navy Seals demonstrates through the experiences of this elite military unit of Sea, Air and Land commandos that combat lessons can apply to the corporate world. The book provides examples of SEAL tactics and missions, along with their corporate applications, particularly in strong team building. Authors Jeff Cannon and Lt. Cmdr. Jon Cannon combine their experience in business and the U.S. Navy in a no-nonsense, practical guide. They zero in on setting goals and commanding your troops with deadly accuracy. While their problem-solving text gets straight to the point, it isn't novel and they repeat lessons under different titles. The book is a laundry list, a useful approach in allowing you to choose what you need. We found that the Cannons fire off a good how-to book for corporate strategists who want to develop battle plans for improving their teams and organizations.

Book Description

Virtual working is a fact of life as companies manage teams of individuals dispersed on sites across the country or around the globe; take increasing advantage of improving technology and software to telecommute and teleconference; and begin to think about the human element in disaster recovery.

The key to successful dispersed working is not technological expertise, but a clear understanding of what it takes to get the enterprise ready for virtual work, and of the skills for bonding individuals into cohesive, high-performance teams across distances and differences.

This book provides that guidance - through work charts, vivid "composite" examples, definitions and actual cases - and shows how the technological tools support and expand the options for collaboration.

It answers such critical questions as "What makes working virtually work?", "How do we start?", "How do you develop new leaders in a virtual environment?", "What skills do virtual managers and team members need?", "How do you determine how ready they are?", "Which technologies are most appropriate for your purposes?", "What’s the impact on existing systems and structures?"

This book is an indispensable practical guide and reference for virtual team leaders, HR managers, CEO’s and trainers. It will also be suitable for professional certification and business courses in organizational development.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for HR consultants and general professionals.......2001-08-12

I found the book to be chockful of helpful information--particularly the checklists, personal evaluations, and learning games and tools. I also liked the step-by-step instructions on everything. Very well organized. Easy to find things--just want you're looking for to solve a key issue or use in a special training class.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Practical and In-Depth.......2001-07-14

In my work as a training consultant, I get called on to do a lot of work in the area of team building. There are a lot of books on the market that offer games and exercises, but fall short on theory and in depth debriefing. Elaine's book does a tremendous job of doing al of the above. Not only is there a wealth of the practical, but Elaine has gone over and above the expectations of delivering in depth training for the trainer so that one's tool kit if filled with reserve information when conducting teambuilding. YEAH!! Elaine has a way of taking the best of herself and others to make it work for the least to the most experienced trainer in the field. I will use this new tool a lot in my upcoming seminars. I look forward to new books from Elaine...they are ALL on my bookshelf and I use them all regularily for research as well sa recommend them to others!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas for teams.......2001-07-11

This new offering from Pfeiffer/Elaine Biech allows trainers to learn from their peers - working professionals in the field of human resource development. The Ten Block Model clearly presents both a roadmap for new teams and a diagnostic tool for established teams that want to move to the next level. Each of the chapters offers training activities that focus on one of the ten blocks. The final chapter presents a series of team building tools that are practical, easy to use, and thought provoking. This book is the team building equivalent of a recroding star's top hits CD - it presents only the best, culled from a large selection of really good ideas from past Annual editions. A wise addition to your library - a book you'll turn to again and again!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14

The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.

If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.

However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)

To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.

I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.

    5 out of 5 stars Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03

This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of games here.......2004-12-08

People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.

    2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2003-09-30

Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23

This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

You also have to get what you need from the world around you. That's why Radical Collaboration teaches a critical fifth skill: Problem Solving and Negotiating. Tamm and Luyet teach you how to negotiate using the highly effective interest-based approach to problem solving.

At the heart of the book is a theory of human relationships called Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation, or FIRO. It explains how unmet emotional needs can sabotage our efforts to collaborate.

How does the online profile work? When you get to chapter 7, you will be directed to a unique code number printed on a sticker on the inside back flap of this book. Take this number to the Web site for the book, www.radicalcollaboration.com. Here, you will be able to take a free relationship profile called the FIRO Element B. This profile will increase your awareness of how you behave in relationships and give you information about your behavior in three areas that strongly influences your ability to collaborate. The test will measure how important control is to you, how important it is for you to be included, and how comfortable you are being open about yourself.

Are you are defensive and fearful? Is that preventing you from collaborating? Use the exercises in this book to identify your habits, and then learn how to moderate them. You will quickly become more effective at work and at home.

      It's a good book.
I recommend it to anyone who needs to build better relationships with their co-worker, managers, and or spouse.

2 out of 5 stars Great concept but lenghty and overly simple book.......2007-01-05

The theory behind the book is great and certainly works, however the book in itself is highly disappointing due to great lenghts to go over basic concepts with fake cute-ish examples and practical exercises that do not really provide a plus.

It really seems to dumb down every detail to fill the standard 250 pages but would be much better in 20 good pages.

Concept and theory explained in the book: 4.5/5

      5 out of 5 stars HELPFUL.......2006-06-06

Discovering the nature of defensiveness and "button pushing" was invaluable for me personally and for being able to now see it in others. I just loved Chapt. 2: "Hey, Buzz Off ... I Am Not Defensive!"

      Quoting:

"Defensiveness is a poison pill to good relationships. In conflict, defensiveness is like blood in the water to a shark. A little here, a little there, and in no time the situation has degenerated into a feeding frenzy."

"Defensiveness is always based on fear."

"Defensiveness does not defend us from others. It arises to protect from experiencing our own uncomfortable feelings. The prescription for dealing with your own defensiveness is to let yourself experience those feelings. Do not avoid them."

"Defensiveness provides only temporary relief. It's like covering dog poop with whipped cream. It may look good and smell better for a short time, but it doesn't deal with the underlying issue or clean up the mess."

"If you think of your childhood as an eighteen-year-long hypnotic induction, you'll get a better idea of how behaviors that were helpful to us as children may have taken on a life of their own and my not be helpful to us as adults."

"Defensiveness distorts our reality, causing us to spend more energy on self-preservation that on problem solving."

      This was great, too:

"The difference between a small annoyance and a button is like the difference between Teflon and Velcro. It is slips off you like Teflon, it is not a button getting pushed. If, however, the incident sticks in your throat, heart or gut like Velcro, then you've probably got some unresolved fears or pain that is a button waiting to be triggered."

The authors say that when buttons get pushed, people typically get dumber, rather than smarter. "By our informal calculations, there is about a twenty-point drop in IQ."

Because of this book, now when I feel my anger rising from what someone else is saying, I tell myself, "Hey, is this defensiveness? If so, am I going to let myself get dumber or try instead to see why the button pushing is making me react poorly?"

5 out of 5 stars The Secret Behind Collaboration.......2005-05-19

"As a management consultant the most important thing is to be deeply grounded in the concepts I use in the client environment. To understand the background, the deep meaning of a concept, the theory, the research, and framework connections to other theories is critical.

In Radical Collaboration I find theory, research, exercises, relevant experience from the authors, and connections to other theories integrated as a whole. The authors reflect their philosophy in each chapter by being open and sharing their own experiences, examples and struggles. They successfully create an atmosphere of curiosity where the reader is invited to explore and to make choices and find their own path to self awareness. Radical Collaboration gives me a pedagogical structure for my own understanding and better tools/exercises with clients.

This book will be an eye opener for many people around the world who want to increase their effectiveness in professional relations as well as their effectiveness in all relations. People who are not content with mediocre communication and relations will find great pleasure in the book. Radical Collaboration will be a great experience for newcomers as well as for experienced consultants."

5 out of 5 stars an essential lifeskill.......2005-04-06

As a mediator and conflict resolution coach, I regularly come face to face with people's fear of conflict. This book reduces the feeling of risk by keeping the focus on the positive problem solving required to get what you need while respecting the dignity of family, friends, customers or colleagues.

It captures everything my clients pay me for at a fraction of the price. However hard you try to ignore it, everyone has some issue with someone in their life, this book will immediately help you understand, take baby steps and move toward the solution that will make for a happier relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Best Basic Project Management Book for Product Development.......2001-04-12

I've read a number of project management books over the years, and very few of them fit at all in a product development environment. This book fits and matches product development very well. In fact, in my opinion, it is the best basic project management book on the market currently for application in product development. This shouldn't be a surprise though since Mickey Rosenau understands project management practice in the field of product development. Beware of the other authors who claim that they understand product development and then apply a traditional approach to project management. Project management in product development is different, and a traditional approach to project management doesn't work in product development. Stay away from the traditional management approach and get this book instead.
