Book Description
This worldwide best-selling business statistics text teaches students how to apply statistics to real business problems through the author's unique three-step approach to problem solving. Students learn to IDENTIFY the right technique by focusing on the problem objective and data type. They then learn to COMPUTE the statistics either by hand, using Excel, or using MINITAB. Finally, they INTERPRET the results in the context of the problem. Keller's approach enhances student comprehension as well as practical skills. The book offers maximum flexibility to instructors wishing to teach concepts by hand or with the computer, or by using both hand and computer methods.

Not so good!.......2005-12-10
Now in my second statistics course, I have a great base in statistics. This book seems to confuse everything that i've already learned. I would recommend using The Basic Practice of Statistics over this book anyday.

Excellent and detailed reference.......2007-05-03
The coverage of the topic is broad and deep. It is one of the few introductory books that devotes some space to transfer function modeling and does so intelligibly.
A must have for the novice as well as those more familiar with the topic that need a solid reference.
The best for Masters level, great all-around.......2007-02-12
This text is absolutely perfect for Masters students learning financial econometrics. There is a little theory, clear explanations, and quite a few real world examples. (I don't think any text would tell the reader what model to use when, because that's application-specific.) It assumes some knowledge of finance and basic econometrics/statistics, which is fair enough. To get more theory, Hamilton (1994) remains the authority, and Campbell, Lo, MacKinlay (1997) is a great introduction for PhD students, and generally an ideal companion volume to this one.
Excellent reference!.......2006-11-05
This book is an excellent toolbox for anyove dealing in the field of financial engineering, however, as a real toolbox, the author doesn't explain the exact use of all tools and how to interpret the results. This is why this book is for advanced users who need a well documented reference but it is not very suitable for beginners in the field. The Splus code is welcome.
Broad coverage, but not for the faint-hearted.......2006-07-05
Written by a University of Chicago professor, this book comprehensively covers times series topics relative to investment and trading-oriented finance (i.e., Wall Street money-making machines). Treatment is generally clear and thorough, but an advanced math and stat background is an absolute prerequisite for understanding the materials.
S-Plus/R code is given, but strangely, there is very little on *why* and
*when* one uses each of the techniques. Under what cirmcustances should I use or not use GARCH? What exactly is PCA good for in real-world applications? These important questions are not answered, in other words, you don't get a sense of the real-world context for these topics.
Best textbook I have ever read .......2005-09-19
First of all, it is well written in a very practical point of view. The whole book is aimed fullly to real financial data(appended in the author's web). People can gain not only the well-explained theories but the hand-on experience with data analysis using SPLUS or any other package.
Secondly, the author is a real expert in this field and has been publishing lots of nice work. All models in the book are clearly illustrated and commented.
Thirdly, it covers a lot of topics in analysis of FT. Reader can learn almost all the valuable things in this field from this book.
If anyone wanna truly learn this book, she/he has to sit down and plays some real data on computer. I think this is the best way and the only way to use this book.
Book Description
This market leading text offers proven, comprehensive, applications-oriented approach. Written by authors who are highly regarded in the field, the text provides sound methodological development. The discussion and development of each technique is presented in an application setting, with the statistical results providing insights to decisions and solutions to problems. Statistics for Business and Economics, 9e offers proven accuracy that has led instructors to adopt it simply for its superior examples and exercises alone.
Customer Reviews:
Covers all the bases without unnecessary verbage!.......2006-11-03
Very good text for any statistics student. Clear and concise explanations. Ten times better than the text I used in undergrad by Newbold.
Great starter book.......2006-10-24
Basic information is all covered in the book. Great if you are taking AP Statistics or a statistics course in your undergrads.
Not Too Bad.......2006-08-03
I have a basic statistics background before I read this book. For me, the book is useful for my basic quantitative research. Last few chapters apply the statistics rules in earlier chapters to the real business environment, which I think it's really practical and interesting. The most I like in this book is the practice questions at the end of each chapter, which apply to everyone's daily life. However, first four chapters cover too many unnecessary topics.
This book requires outside help!.......2006-06-03
This book tends to jump off topic (most aren't explained well). For example, they talk about one thing but the exercises are a bit different than the chapter's topic. Most of the information isn't fully explained. If you are in a class where the instructor assigns the exercise questions for homework, you are screwed. You may not know what to do unless you seek outside help (study guide, tutor etc.) or read beyond the chapter.
A very interesting book... for those who understand statistics.......2006-05-28
The book has a lot of examples and is a must have for those majoring in Finance. Some Universities use this for Intro to Statistics and this book is very didactic. The way it's written out in a form that takes you a another level of reading which makes you feel you're in a rainbow... a reading rainbow... Anway... The book has answers in the back so it's good enough for whenever the professor assigns Homework.

Very useful book - faulty cover!.......2007-09-01
The book is a comprehensive review of 6Sigma tools and 6Sigma Project management life cycle. Hard reading. Recommended if there is no fault with the book! This suppose to be a new book from amazon.com I can not send it back as this is very heavy and I need it!!
Book " Implementing 6 sigma: Smarter solutions using statistical methods".......2007-05-26
Excellent condition of the book, as they mentioned, it arrived on time according to what the deal was, this is an excellent vendor
The must-have on every six sigma shelf.......2006-11-12
I have been using this book for the past few years and it continues to be the most valuable Six Sigma resource on my bookshelf. It is the most complete and practical Six Sigma book you will find, and worth every dollar. Every six sigma black belt I have worked with owns a copy of this book
This book is absolutely packed with useful examples - providing you with both the formulas to solve the Six Sigma tests, and also the solutions.
This is a manufacturing-centric six sigma book. If you are dedicated to service application of six sigma, I would recommend reading "Six Sigma for Transactions and Service."
If you are interested in learning about six sigma, or are a green-belt or a process improvement or enterprise modeler, this probably isn't the book for you. However if you are a black belt and apply six sigma methods on a consistent basis, this is a must-read ...
Implementing Six Sigma Review.......2006-02-28
I have read multiple books on Six Sigma, but "Implementing Six Sigma", is by far the most practical with a perfect balance of statistical concepts and everyday examples. Finally, there is a book that can show Executives, there is a better way, a true management system that links strategic objectives to bottom-line results. This book is a must for all Six Sigma practioners.
This is the only Six Sigma book you will need.......2006-02-26
This is the only Six Sigma book that covers all aspects of the methodology. You will not find another book that analyses every aspect of Six Sigma so deeply and yet, in a way that makes it so easy to understand.
As a professional of Six Sigma, I have been through every book about the subject that deserves attention but none of them comes anywhere close to Breygogle's "Implementing Six Sigma". Not only does the second edition cover the Lean methodology, but it also delves into the Theory OF Constraints and very clearly shows how it can be used for Six Sigma project selections.
No wonder why this book is the only one recommended by ASQ for their Six Sigma Black Belt preperation and no wonder why Breyfogle won the Crosby Medal.
Great book! I give it a 5 plus.

Book Description
The new edition of Lind’s Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics is a perennial market best seller due to its comprehensive coverage of statistical concepts and methods delivered in a student-friendly, step-by-step format. The text is non-threatening and presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Self reviews and exercises for each section, and review sections for groups of chapters also support the student learning steps. Modern computing applications (Excel, Minitab, and MegaStat) are introduced, but the text maintains a focus on presenting statistics concepts as applied in business as opposed to technology or programming methods. The thirteenth edition continues as a students’ text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.

Very Pleased.......2007-09-04
I was pleased from start to finish. It was the correct book, in great condition, it had the CD as stated and it came in a timely fashion.
Book Description

The text presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, though the text maintains a focus on presenting statistics content as opposed to technology or programming methods, and the fifth edition continues as a ‘students’ text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.
Customer Reviews:
there are excellent, cheaper alternatives.......2007-10-20
Take a look at www.coventry-collegiate.com. Understanding Business Statistics, the book featured there, is independently published and sells for only $39.95 (new). It is clear, extremely readable and very student-friendly.
Review of Basic Statistics.......2007-02-20
This is a well written and illustrated text book that describes the working of statistics. Definitions are placed in boxs within the text so the defination of a term is where you read the uses of the term. Review questions are also place within the text so the question follows the definition and explation of the statitistical information being taught. The book also uses web sites for information and examples, software programs such as Excel, to add to the learning experience. Included is a CD with power point lessons, and sample quizes.
Good Book but..........2006-10-19
Yes, put all the extra features together, namely the student CD and the Visual Statistics together, this seems like a well-put-together solution for a beginner statistics course. However, it needs some help. The book could be more thoroughly indexed. Visual Statistics software does not work properly even with updates. Sentence such as "The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is obtained by summing the various sample means and dividing the sum by the number of samples" is not intuitive. This book has potential to be great, but it will take better teaching techniques than complex statistics talk.
introductory stats.......2006-07-05
The book is essentially a standard introductory probability and statistics course, with an emphasis on the statistics. The business and economics in the title is mostly reflected in the examples given in the text, which have that orientation.
There is also no emphasis on formal proving of various maths results. The typical reader is not expected to be a maths major, and probably does not need it.
A useful feature is the CD that accompanies the book. It lets the reader easily use a computer to handle the tedious data inputting and number crunching.
Book Description
Easy to understand-even for learners with limited math backgrounds, this book uses a modeling approach to provide thorough coverage of the basic techniques in quantitative methods and focuses on the managerial applications of these techniques. An interesting and reader friendly writing style makes for a clear presentation, complete with all the necessary assumptions and mathematical details.
Chapter topics include probability concepts and applications, decision models and decision trees, regression models, forecasting, inventory control models, linear programming modeling applications and computer analyses, network models, project management, simulation modeling, and more.
For an introduction toquantitative analysis, quantitative management, operations research, or management science-especially for those individuals preparing for work in agricultural economics and health care fields.
Customer Reviews:
Introduction.......2006-12-17
We used this book in my "Operations analysis"-class, and it's a great introduction to the subjects discussed. Some very basic probability for estimating values and descision theory. Some regression in addition to other forecasting methods. Good sections on linear and integer programming, and also basic queuing models. Markov analysis is about as far as this book goes, and it basically just touches upon all the subjects in order to make the reader grasp the basic ideas.
One minus is the Windows-only software, no Mac-support there, but that only meant that I had to use Excel, which imo helped me gain a better understanding of the subjects, as I had to formulate all the spreadsheets myself instead of just feeding numbers into the QM-package, which imo seems like a total waste of a chance to learn. Anyway, most areas are covered with respect to both QM and Excel, which makes the non-existant Mac-support bareable.
So Much Better Than The University Bookstore.......2006-11-10
Wow! This brand new book cost $50 less than the same new book at my university bookstore! It was even cheaper than buying a used version of the book from the bookstore. The shipping was so fast, it arrived at my house the day after I ordered it! I'll be looking on Amazon.com for all my future text book purchases!! :)
Excellent introduction to the subject.......2006-02-28
I read this book as the assigned text for a course in Quantitative Analysis and found it to be an excellent text for such a class. Each Model and equation presented is explained through realistic examples, illustrations, and explanations of the math. This made the subject very easy to comprehend and apply to the real world.
Exercises at the end of each chapter are also based on real-world situations and case studies are included in the book and the CD that go into more detail about a real world use for each model.
The book was also easy to read and not overly technical when explaining mathematic concepts. An excellent text for an introduction to the field of management science.
Book Description
This revision of QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR BUSINESS provides students with a conceptual understanding of the role that quantitative methods play in the decision-making process. This text describes the many quantitative methods that have been developed over the years, explains how they work, and shows how the decision-maker can apply and interpret data. Written with the non-mathematician in mind, this text is applications-oriented. Its "Problem-Scenario Approach" motivates and helps students understand and apply mathematical concepts and techniques. In addition, the managerial orientation motivates students by using examples that illustrate situations in which quantitative methods are useful in decision making.
Customer Reviews:
This textbook is TERRIBLE!.......2005-10-01
This book is written in unnecessarily complicated language and does not present information in a way that is easily understood. I teach graduate courses in quantitative methods and I made the mistake of ordering this book for one of my courses without reading it first. It was a disaster!
Unless you are getting a doctorate and need to know lots of complicated formulas without adequate explanations, DO NOT buy this book.
Quantitative MAnagement.......2005-07-10
IT's really oky book. But it took a little more time to get it ghrough me. There are few scratches on the book when i recd. it. The parcel is oky.
Thanks anyway,
Quant Methods Book.......2005-03-06
I have used this textbook for an upper level math class and although the book was hard to follow, I really feel that it did present the information in a well laid out format. Some of the words were hard to grasp, but as for the problems in the back, I found them very useful. I hope anyone out there will in fact give this book a chance.
ABSOLUTELY THE WORST TEXTBOOK FROM A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE.......2003-03-12
I am currently taking a Quant Meth class which is using this as the textbook. By far, this is the worst textbook I have ever encountered as a student. It is hard to understand and the answers that are given in the back do not explain how to get to the final solution. Because the problems are not paired (that is 1 is not like 2, 3 is not like 4, etc.) and the only answers are to the EVEN problems, you are basically lost. There is a website for the 9th edition that is "under construction" currently, so there is no help there. This is not a book conducive to learning. Teachers and colleges - PLEASE think twice before you choose this for your curriculum. Both you and your students will be miserable!
Quantitative Methods 8th Edition.......2002-02-01
I am a professor using this book to teach a graduate level Quantitative Methods math class. This book is hard to understand for the students. Exercises included at the end of the chapters are hard to figure for the student based on what is presented in the text alone.
For the instructor, no teacher support is available except a solutions manual. All other texts I have used provides sample lecture material, additional cases, etc. This text provides no such support with a useless web site.
Book Description
The emphasis of the text is on data analysis, modeling, and spreadsheet use in statistics and management science. This text contains professional Excel software add-ins. The authors maintain the elements that have made this text a market leader in its first edition: clarity of writing, a teach-by-example approach, and complete Excel integration.
Customer Reviews:
Managerial Statistics Text book.......2006-11-03
It was the text book the professor wanted me to buy.
It was good.
Sanjay Chheda.......2006-10-06
The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12
The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!
No trouble with Excel.......2001-01-31
I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.

A remarkable range of examples for the idea of visual thinking, with beautifully printed pages. A real treat for all who reason and learn by means of images. -- Rudolf Arnheim
Customer Reviews:
Amazing book for information design.......2007-07-15
I am the type of person who dabbles in all kinds of design, and I think of the ideal designer as one who knows a little about everything. Designers design ways of output, whether it be lemon juice from a lemon or ways to fit all vital components in a laptop in the most efficient way. This book is about the output of information from our multidimensional world to the flat paper space, and he does it brilliantly.
It's even worth mentioning the book itself as a good piece of design. All the images are vivid, the pages feel crisp and durable, even the color of the pages I bet was an attention of detail (it's slightly offwhite, but in an extremely good way). It's like good ol' fashioned timeless design.
He covers the subject wide and far, dips into everything from visual illusions to hardcore information displays. Sometimes you wonder where the heck he gets all these wonderful images, they span from the stoneage till today and show the vast variety of ways to display information, both simple and complex.
It is a beautiful book and an absolute must for people interested in the design of information. Actually, I'd say it's a must for anyone interested in information at all, be it for powerpoint or for magazine layout. This will be one of the most intelligent books on my shelf.
An Obsolete Glance At A Classic Problem.......2007-06-28
This is a short book, 126 pages. An interesting cursory exploration of the subject. However, it feels like it predates information technology (1990 predates the web by 5 years), and seems to have more in common with how to communicate elements of a hand-drawn map atlas if you were living in the 1700s than it has with using Adobe Illustrator to convey an idea for the web. I bought this book to see if it would help me as a web developer, and instead when it arrived I realized I got a weird coffee table book that feels like it was written in the 1960s, at the latest, to summarize that you can use different icons or pictographs of small size to communicate important ideas without words. (Sorry, I already gave away the story of the book.)
I know this review isn't going to get very popular marks, but, put simply, this book is probably good for professional or student pure designers, but it's useless for me. I honestly don't think the book targets web designers, but somebody here reviewed that it was "great" for web designers, so because of that remark I bought it. Sorry, but I don't see the applicability. But then, I only skimmed over the book before I put it back on Amazon Marketplace.
While one should normally never judge a book by its cover, in this case I think you should.
one of three or four.......2007-01-10
this is part of a series from tufte. he uses examples to describe techniques of visualization. if you do presentations to others or write reports that present complex data, several of his books should be in your library.
A wonderful book!.......2006-11-04
No designer should be without this book. I especially enjoy the historical accounts of information design. Of course hind sight is 20/20 so his redesigns seem obvious from our perspective.
An outstanding addition to my library.......2006-06-23
An outstanding addition to my library, Edward systematically explores the presentation of data showing the value of data rich content when it is properly displayed. After reading half the book, I couldn't sit through a presentation without coming up with at least 3 ways to improve it. The illustrations in the book are beautifully rendered and cover a diverse set of subject matter each as interesting as the next. The only topic concerning this book that I struggled with is whether or not to mark it up. In the end, as I do with all of my books I intend to refer back to, I did.
