An Effective Management Tool For Managing Right.......2007-10-05
I am a business consultant for client companies whose business size is $30-50 million sales.I have been consulting for 27 years.I continue to find department heads and general management lacking the experience or know-how in establishing goals for their departments, associates or the over-all organization.
The subject tool, provides a common sense method for jump-starting management in the establishment of departmental and organization goals.I use this tool as a instructional approach. I have found that clients improve their communications and specific action. The tool gives the manager confidence.
Perfect Phrases for Setting Performance Goals.......2006-02-23
Lots of great ideas and thoughts to better express a behavior.
Perfect Phrases for Setting Performance Goals - not so perfect.......2006-02-17
My reason for purchasing the book was to have a resouce for our employees to use as they are writing their goal statements based on the SMART goal matrix. I did not find it as helpful as I was hoping in demonstrating what a good, specific, measurable goals looks like. I think it gives you a few beginning words but should have expanded more within the examples.
Perfect Phrases for Setting Performance Goals.......2004-08-07
When I order this book, I thought I will get lots of ready-to-use "Goals" which I can esay to set my subordinate's Goals. But I am very disappoint. Lots of Goals listing in the books are actually the working items not goals. Like "Deposit completed backups...", "Schedule all planned shutdown...". Therefore this book help me to setup the work items of my subordinate not set the goals.

don't waste your time and money....look elsewhere.......2007-10-07
I ordered this booklet/pamphlet based on the reviews and also because the books is kind of short. When dealing with goal setting short it is not necessarily bad. You certainly don't want a psychological dissertation about the benefits of goal setting. But a least you should expect the book to explain one of the many ways of setting them. However, this book does not provide any specific as to how to go about it.
The book not only is very short (less than 40 pages) with big typed letters and lots of white space, but the author only deals with some psychological benefit of goal setting, and a few "catchy" phrases. And I guess for "meat" or mechanics of the subject you should look elsewhere. Get "Your best year yet" by Jinny S. Ditzler, and don't waste your money on this pamphlet.
Magnificent little book!.......2005-09-05
I appreciate the fact that this little gem is only 40 pages. It is all meat and no fluff. I highly recommend to those who are serious about setting goals.
Enjoyable, Educational, and Inspiring.......2005-03-27
I have had the opportunty to hear Gary Ryan Blair speak at a company function. I can't tell you how much the man has inspired me to reach goals I never thought possible.
As Gary will tell you, success is a state if mind. I highly recommend this book and every other book you can get your hands on. Also, he has such a inspiring intellect you should consider audio and video.
Great Message - Great Delivery.......2005-03-27
This is one of those rare books that makes it points clearly and then guides your through exercises that reinforce its key messages.
I found Goal Setting 101 to be incredibly helpful in preparing myself, my employees and my children for success. I have used the content to help me design company and personal goals and I am well on my way toward measurable success on those goals.
I highly recommend it!
Goal Setting Done Right!.......2005-03-16
Boy, this book makes you really work, and gives you a great understanding how it works.
It's not always easy, but when you get the understanding behind goal setting you are eager to do the writing part of it.
I feel that anyone who does the work involved at the end of each chapter can't help but succeed too.
Very powerful tools here for your success.

Customer Reviews:
Amazingly, consistently right on!.......2007-06-13
Mr. Ziglar is simply amazing. He is consistently motivating, inspirational, and right on in all that he says and writes. Truly a national treasure. Every bit of his offerings help me to do, as he says, "what I ought to do when I ought to do it", so that I will be able to do "what I want to do when I want to do it."
Goals: A Must.......2007-03-16
Everyone in the world needs to read or listen to what Zig has to say on Goals. Everyone in the world needs to set goals, oh what a better world this would be.
A must read/listen.
Truly inspirational and can stand up to repeated listening!.......2007-02-24
This is truly an excellent audio which has been worth many times its price to me. I have listened to it literally hundreds if not thousands of times over the last twenty years and it has helped me in my life to be successful in a variety of positions, through career transitions, etc.
In this tape, Zig Ziglar uses stories, reasearch nuggets and powerful metaphors to drive home his points in an extremely powerful way. He is very present when he speaks and the tape is not only informative, it is funny and entertaining.
This is a perfect tape to listen to over and over again while you are commuting. This is how I used it for many years. As a personal growth coach who does a large amount of public speaking, workshops and one-on-one coaching -- I feel I am in a good position to judge the merit of what is out there.
Zig is a Christian and this might not go over well with some audiences. However, he doesn't push this agenda, but he does at different points use some illustrations that come from the bible. For example, in one section he quotes the bible about money saying, "he who seeks silver, will never be satisfied with silver" and goes on to explain how you can never have enough money, UNLESS the money has you. I think that's a very wise statement and it's not money itself that is bad, but how you use it. The point he seems to be making is that are you a good steward of your money, which I think it a relevant point that requires guts to make in the current business environment. In fact, I would suggest it's an essential point.
Cognitively, I probably knew most of what was in this audio. However, I know it differently now at a deeper level because of using it. This tape is done in such a way that the ideas sink in deeply and become a part of you. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Also, in addition to working in psychology, I was also a marketing person for Xerox when they were Fortune 25. I went through their International Center for Management Development and won their Team Xerox Spirt Award. The point of me sharing this is that I know what it takes to train sales and marketing people and I recognize a good and practical resource when I come across it. I don't think you can go wrong with this audio, especially at the price they are offering it at.
Great for First Time Ziggers - Not good if you have other Zig.......2006-11-06
I have purchased other Zig tapes and really enjoy them. I thought this was going to be something new. It's not. It is the same stories all over again. I also do not recommend the CD if you are going to be using it as a car audio. CDs can't just stop, be ejected so you can listen to something else, and put back in like a tape can.
Joe Lowy.......2006-05-25
WOW!! I WAS TAKEN AWAY WITH ZIG!! THIS IS A LIVE EVENT REPRODUCED WITH BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. ZIG WARMS YOUR HEART WITH HIS WISDOM, HUMOR AND THOUGHTS. I CANT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH!!
Book Description
"Performance begins with focusing on outcomes instead of activities. In my experience, most people in most organizations most of the time do the reverse. They concentrate their efforts on the pursuit of activities instead of outcomes. As a result, they rarely set or achieve performance results that matter."
Today's performance challenges demand outcomes-both financial and nonfinancial-that must simultaneously benefit customers, shareholders, employees, and management. Therein lies a cycle of sustainable performance that functions as a framework to ensure your organization's goals are set, met, and balanced for today's business world.
Make Success Measurable! enables you to avoid activity-based goals that can go on indefinitely, and articulate aggressive outcome-based goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
This is a how-to book, emphasizing outcomes as opposed to actions in setting goals. You'll learn how to: Set goals that matter to customers, shareholders, and funders. Set nonfinancial as well as financial goals and link them together. Understand and use outcome-based goals that support success while avoiding activity-based goals that produce failure. Select and use management disciplines needed to achieve your goals. Smith provides the what's and why's behind today's performance challenges and shows how to convert them into measurable concrete achievements.
Using an innovative approach, Smith divides each chapter into an explanatory Mindbook section and a practice Workbook section. The Mindbook sections provide descriptions and explain key concepts, frameworks, tools, and techniques. They seek to build your intellectual understanding of how to set and achieve the performance goals that matter.
The Workbook sections include detailed examples and exercises that you and your colleagues can use to practice the concepts, tools, and techniques put forth in the Mindbook section. Workbook exercises allow you to convert understanding into action-and action into results! "Doug Smith's work on performance and measurement has been an invaluable management resource for us. We believe that if you can't measure it, you can't improve it. Thanks to Doug, we can focus on the right measures to drive performance against today's many new and different challenges throughout our enterprise."-Leon Gorman, President, L.L. Bean, Inc.
"Make Success Measurable! is a practical and powerful step-by-step guide to setting and achieving the goals we all need to accomplish in a constantly changing and challenging world."-Charles Dolan, Chairman, Cablevision Systems Corporation.
"No one writes as clearly about today's key management issues as Doug Smith. Whether you're in a small eCommerce startup or a large, already established organization, the frameworks, tools, techniques, and exercises contained in this book are the only things you'll need to manage the performance that matters to your customers, your people, and your shareholders."-Steve Goldstein, CEO, eChores and former CEO, American Express Bank.
"Achieving results that matter-to donors and clients-is the true measure of success for any nonprofit organization. This book provides a thoughtful and extremely practical guide for setting goals and effectively meeting them. It is an absolutely indispensable tool for leaders and a model for good management."-Jenna Dorn, President, National Museum of Health.

The Bottom Line of Success.......2002-08-12
Make Success Measurable! is definitely becoming the Bible at work. Very well written, and Smith's ideas are well-supported. We've received positive feedback from clients, and we've expanded our client base because of this good word-of-mouth. I strongly recommend Make Success Measurable! It's as good as Guerilla PR: Wired, which focuses on techniques to getting solid public relations coverage, especially nowadays.
Learn How to be SMART.......2000-10-05
You can rarely pick up a job description in the public or private sector that does not include a statement seeking "demonstrated experience and success working with the principles of quality management and a commitment to customer service." One of the cornerstones to quality management is the ability to focus on outcomes instead of activities.
Make Success Measurable is filled with practical techniques. Even more, it is a workbook, providing opportunities to apply new concepts to real work. Whether you want to be able to create more focus within your own work unit, be able to demonstrate tangible results to your manager, prioritize your own work by aligning your day to day activities with the most important initiatives, or coach customers who are seeking your expertise in developing performance measures, this book can help.
As a result of reading this book and trying the exercises, you should be able to:
1) Convert new visions, strategies, and directions into achievable outcome-based goals that can better yourself and others in your organization.
2) Set goals that are specific, measurable, aggressive, achievable, relevant, and time bound. (SMART Goals)
3) Set goals that matter to those expecting a return on their funding dollars.
4) Set goals that matter to you personally in terms of opportunities, rewards, and skills.
5) Choose from a variety of management disciplines to achieve your goals.
6) Set goals that matter to customers who want speed, quality, and prompt service.
Ten Management Principles for Leading Change.......2000-06-05
"I believe you will benefit from this book because the challenge of setting and achieving performance goals has become very confusing". Douglas K. Smith writes, "It has been more than 30 years since Peter Drucker wrote about the importance of managing for results. His work led to the widespread practice of management by objective. But an awful lot has happened in the past 30 years. The world of business and organizations has changed dramatically, turning many of Drucker's specifics (though not his wisdom) upside down. In the aftermath of total quality, customer service, time-based competition, strategic alliances, globalization, reengineering, core competencies, continuous improvement, innovation, teams, horizontal organization, benchmarking, best place to work, information technology, diversity, environmentalism, deregulation and reregulation, eCommerce, and privatization, those of us left standing in today's organizations are unsure about what performance goals and outcomes make the most difference and why. We know that setting performance goals is key to managing ourselves and others, but we no longer know how".
Douglas K. Smith organizes his book in four parts. In the first part (Chapters 1-4), he provides the background, concepts, tools, techniques, and frameworks you need to set specific outcome-based goals that matter to successfully navigate today's most pressing performance challenges. In the second part (Chapters 5-7), he focuses on helping you align and coordinate goals throughout your organization. In the third part (Chapters 8-10), he describes the management disciplines you need to achieve your goals and how to make choices among them. In the fourth part (Chapter 11), he concludes the book with a step-by-step design for building an outcomes management system in your organization.
In this context, in Chapter 10, he reviews the management disciplines you must understand in order to succeed in the face of change, and introduces the critical distinction between decision-diven change and behavior-driven change, and describes how to manage each successfully. Hence, he argues that most change efforts fall far short of their potential. Usually that's because leaders fail to address the deep behavioral changes they are seeking. And thus, he lists the following ten management principles as the heart of any successful change effort:
1. Keep performance results the primary objective of behavior and skill change.
2. Continually increase the number of individuals taking responsibility for their own change.
3. Make sure that each person always knows why his or her performance and change matters to the purpose and results of the whole organization.
4. Put people in a position to learn by doing and provide them with the information and support they need just in time to perform.
5. Embrace improvisation as the best path to both performance and change.
6. Use team performance to drive change whenever demanded.
7. Concentrate organizational designs on the work that people do, not on the decision-making authority they have.
8. Create and focus energy and meaningful language because these are the scarcest resources during periods of change.
9. Stimulate and sustain behavior-driven change by harmonizing initiatives throughout the organization.
10. Practice leadership based on the courage to live the change you wish to bring about.
Finally, he argues that if you expect others to change their behavior, you have to change yours. It's as simple and as hard as that.
I strongly recommend.
A useful and practical book........1999-11-27
This is one of those rare books that makes it points clearly and then guides your through exercises that reinforce its key messages.
I found the book incredibly helpful in preparing realistic plans that set you up for success. I have used it extensively to help me design major projects and I am well on my way toward measurable success on those goals.
Read this book and apply its lessons.......1999-03-04
Make Success Measurable tells you how to set business goals that matter for shareholders, customers, and employees. That is good advice, and it is backed up by "workbook" exercises that help you focus on what is really important. The "mindbook-workbook" format makes room for exercises that you can work on with your colleagues at the office. I found that the "mindbook" portion held my interest as an individual reader. I started getting REALLY interested about halfway through the book when Smith introduced the concept of "working arenas" - the different groupings of people (sometimes in multiple companies) that are necessary to achieve these goals. Smith explains that you need to shape your goals and methods to fit the appropriate working arena, rather than a pre-set corporate structure. If you work in a complex organization, you should read this book and apply its lessons.
I would compare Make Success Measurable very favorably to the Kaplan and Norton book on The Balanced Scorecard. The Balanced Scorecard tends to be vague and anecdotal on the subject of how to set measurable goals, and it is hard to finish. In contrast, Smith packs his book with original analysis and specific recommendations on topics like "Vertical versus Horizontal Management Disciplines" and "Injecting Creative and Personal Tension into Goals". The Balanced Scorecard presents a four way cause and effect chain from employees through process improvements, customers, and shareholders. Make Success Measurable presents a three way performance cycle as including employees who provide value to customers who provide rewards to shareholders...who provide rewards to employees and so on. The "process" piece doesn't appear in Smith's analysis, because focusing on process measures doesn't necessarily help anyone. In fact, it is a trap that can lead to meaningless work. Smith encourages us to focus on "outcomes" - measures that matter directly to employees, customers, and shareholders. This brings us quickly to reality and hopefully to consensus with our colleagues. Get real. Get this book.

help students in grades 5 - 12 to succeed.......2007-05-09
A workbook designed to help students in grades 5 - 12 to succeed, with a goal of changing lives, "Goal Setting for Students" is a must have for every teacher, troop leader, tutor and parent. If every educator utilized this program we would have a future filled with successful, responsible adults.
In eight chapters John Bishop has created a tool for helping students in understanding success, goal setting, stretching goals, positive attitude, taking responsibility, the value of determination, managing time and keeping goals in mind. In each chapter are key words and lessons on each topic, activities for the individual and for the class, home activities and reviews. All of this is presented in a concise and easy to follow format and written in such a way as to encourage the student's interest. Each page is eye-catching and interesting, certainly not boring nor childish but aimed at this precise age group.
Teachers will easily find ways to integrate this program into their lesson plans, and find that it does not take up time, but rather will help save valuable class time and alleviate frustrations. Students will come away from the program with a new attitude toward goals and responsibility. Through "real world examples" students are given something to think about in regards to the chapter topic that they can relate to and will set them thinking of their own dreams and goals. Famous quotes and proverbs are found throughout the book lending additional points to ponder, such as this one from Mahatma Ghandi, "Real education consists of drawing the best out of you."
"Goal Setting for Students" will help draw the best out of the students you know.
Teachers! Parents! A Helpful Tool For Nearly Every Child.......2005-07-26
I'd rate it with more stars if I could.
Goal Setting for Students is a nice, 68 page book that will help every parent get his or her child started on goals and achievement. The layout is simple and easy-to-read, and each chapter offers questions, with do-able and interesting activities, plus a final review at the end to recap what was taught. The book encourages children and teens (the book is for 5-12 graders) to invest in themselves, and why.
I tutor kids in my home (though I don't have children of my own), and can't wait to show this guide to parents. If your child seems "lost" or is not achieving on a level you'd like them to, this book is a great place to start.
What a valuable yet inexpensive investment!
John Bishop has zeroed in on a problem with kids--they have no purpose and no direction.
Parents: Goal Setting for Students will help you to help your child.
Teachers: Goal Setting for Students will help you to help your students.
Even though the age range is for students in grades 5-12, if you have younger students or children, I'd buy it anyway. The tools in here are great for almost any age.
What a legacy to leave your children: success and direction
My son Jeremy's review.......2005-06-15
One thing I learned is how to be successful and what success is.

This book is excellent and has powerful principles to learn and grow by........2007-10-04
Aiman elaborates on why and how the law of attraction works and how one can create vibrations on what he or she wants. This will draw in people possessing similar positive vibrations, i.e., "like attracts like."
Al-Maimani simple to follow steps walk you through the subtle ways of preventing negative vibrations from occurring by default.
I love this book! It is so simple and easy! It really helps put the Law of Attraction into action. I've kept it as a resource and have recommended it to several people that are still trying to figure out the Law of Attraction.
However, all of the material in this book is essentially worthless unless and until a reader makes and then sustains a full commitment to assume 100% responsibility for her or his life.
This book is a terrific guide to creating a successful life. If you want to learn at the feet of the master, you'll pick up this book!
Empower the law of attraction with these simple steps!.......2007-04-09
What a marvelous book! Most books speak of the Law of Attraction and focus simply on `believing you have' and thereby creating the reality you want. Aiman Al-Maimani's book, How to Attract Wealth, Health, Love, and Luck into Your Life Immediately really is a complete manual for activating the law of attraction in your life. The processes he outlines are very simple and also very complete. If you follow his instructions, you will definitely experience real changes in your life. The real key to the power of the positive thinking lies in the power of positive `doing' and Aiman Al-Maimani shows you how. This is book is a must read!

Book Description
Every ten years or so, a simple idea comes along that revolutionizes the business world. Stop Setting Goals is one of those ideas!
Bobb Biehl, president of the consulting firm Masterplanning Group International, believes that decades of emphasis on setting goals has left many in the workplace feeling like second-class citizens. Most people find goal setting to be a major source of anxiety and frustration.
Here he sets out to expose the myth that goal setting is required for success in your business, career, and personal development. Instead, he argues, we can be very successful by simply identifying and solving strategic problems. You may never have to set another goal as long as you live.
Whether you work with a Fortune 500 company, a mom-and-pop start-up business, a sales firm, or a typical office, you will find yourself and your team experiencing:
* Maximized natural energy
* Reduced frustration, pressure, and tension
* Increased productivity
* Better team spirit, morale, and respect
* Improved communication
* Greater self-confidence
The simple ideas in this book will help you and your team, no matter what you do or where you go, for the rest of your life.

The most valuable management and patient care tool I have.......2005-05-11
As a registered nurse of 20 years' experience, I have endlessly heard about setting goals with patients and setting my own goals. I cringed every time I heard this, because setting goals is NOT my style. Then this lovely book came along and changed the way I approached patient care planning with the patient and the way I approached planning in my own life.
We were always taught to work with patients to set goals for their care. And, for years, I had seen a blank curtain come down over eyes and faces when I started talking about goals. Once I understood the principles in this book, I started changing my approach and even just my words, so that my predominantly problem-solver patients were not intimidated or put off. What an improvement.
This book has not received the ongoing attention it merits, but I recommend to you that you read it and put it into practice. Its testimony is in significantly more effective nursing care planning with my patients. If my wide variety of patients generally respond better with the application of Bobb Biehl's principles, it will no doubt work in any other setting where you interact in planning with people. Do not knock this book until you have tried Biehl's principles in actual practice.
Is that all there is?.......2005-01-15
Had great expectations for this book, most of which went unfulfilled. A friend recommended it based on the initial concept of the difference between goal setters and problem solvers. Unfortunately, that initial concept is pretty much the entire book. It just gets repeated with a lot of exclamation points. I'm not surprised that this wasn't reprinted or that it didn't have a paperback edition. There simply isn't enough substance to warrant either. I wish that there was; I was truly looking for helpful ways to further understand and benefit from the difference between the two approaches. Unfortunately, the goal of this book turns out to be a problem unsolved.
This needs to be reprinted........2000-09-23
Another one of those "just two kinds of people" concepts. They are the goal setters and the problem solvers. Read it. Really liked it. Gave it away thinking I'd replace it. Unavailable. Thought it would be a big seller and available in paperback. Still looking to replace it and maybe give as gifts to others.
I'm one of those problem solvers who is often frustrated by goal setters who have not "counted the cost". It's comforting to know that there may be nothing wrong with you if you don't like tossing your hat over the fence before knowing how you're going to get yourself over the fence.
Biehl brings insight and information on how and why problem solvers and goal setters are both needed and on how they need to work together.

Book Description
The #1 reason cited in exit interviews for an employee quitting is "my manager." Most managers and executives not only aren't aware of this obvious problem, but probably wouldn't know what to do about it if they did.
Today's employees do not respond to the old hands-on, militaristic management styles. They are highly independent, individual professionals with their own fully developed ideas. Leaders and managers who try to micro-manage them will inevitably confront wide-spread disgruntlement, absenteeism, and turnover...and increase their own and their employees' stress levels.
In The Hands-Off Manager, Chandler and Black offer a new vision for all managers. With stories, examples, and vibrant activities for the reader to practice, this book shows any manager--new or seasoned--how to coach and mentor employees rather than hover over their shoulders and goad them into action.
In this system, each employee's strengths are honored and honed in a climate of partnership and mutual goal-setting. Chandler, whose 100 Ways to Motivate Others is a best-selling favorite with small and large businesses alike, has called The Hands-Off Manager "my most original work to date" because it finally solves the age-old problem of getting the best performance out of people without frustrating yourself and them.
The Hands-Off Manager and its breakthrough content will take its place beside In Search of Excellence, The One Minute Manager, and Who Moved My Cheese? as an instant classic that will forever change the way we lead and manage.

An empowering guide to happier managing .......2007-10-19
Steve Chandler and Duane Black present an approach to management that promises to lower your stress level, increase your happiness and allow everyone in your organization to be more creative and productive. The idea is that old-style, hands-on micromanagement does not engage today's workers. The book tries to persuade readers through emotional appeals, which can be illuminating but sometimes appear strained. The book includes interesting quotes from all kinds of people, including Peter Drucker, Deepak Chopra, Napoleon Hill (whom the authors criticize), Voltaire and others. We say the authors' core ideas are persuasive, but the style might lean a little too much on intangible insights for some readers. However, this is a great book if you are a stressed-out manager who wants to find a new approach. Read this, calm down and stop micromanaging.
Good points, a bit too soft & sweet in presentation........2007-08-14
Managing the folks in today's workforce is very different than it was a few decades back. They usually don't take well to rigidity, conformity, or being told anything. Steve Chandler and Duane Black believe there is a great way to manage them and to improve their life and yours. They call it hands-off managing. That is, you don't try to control them by turning and pushing them (metaphorically) in a specific direction. What they believe is that you should spend more time helping your employees understand who they are as people and why they can use their work to help them express that unique self they have to contribute. Sounds a bit squishy? Yeah, me too. However, there really is a solid core behind the kind of soft metaphors they use to express it.
Much of the book is focused on getting you to treat yourself this way. The idea is to lower your stress levels by not forcing yourself to be a certain way, don't worry so much about overcoming and willing things into existence. Rather, relax and find your own core and your true gifts and then you will be ready to lead others this way. Several times they say (probably too many times) that the best gift you can give another is the gift of them self.
The book is full of anecdotes from their own coaching experiences to illustrate their points. They also use quotes from the likes of Deepak Chopra (this always raises my concerns about the point being made), Napoleon Hill (whom they also bash for using the work think), Voltaire (!), and many others. They also make some really odd comments. One being that DeNiro was channeling a dead boxer in "Raging Bull". Hmmm. Jake LaMotta was not only alive when the film was made (he was born in 1921), he is alive in 2007.
While I quite enjoy their point about the new work force, not trying to force things so much, focusing only on the present and the one most important task, I found the packaging of the ideas a tad saccharine. It is up to you whether you will find it appealing.
It works in more scenarios than just the business world. .......2007-07-17
I have experienced this type of success when leading volunteer groups but haven't been able to define the formula until reading this book. When people volunteer, you can't fire them. If you lose them you have to do all the work yourself! You have to figure out a way to use what they have to offer. The principles in this book work!
Low-Stress, Humanistic Management That Works.......2007-07-07
The Hands-Off Manager's chapter headings include uncomplicated titles such as "Using the Power of Neutral" (Chapter 3) and "Letting Go of Judgment" (Chapter 11), but this book is far from simplistic. I began reading with the thought that I would skim the book in an hour or two. I soon found that there are truths here that deserve a slow, careful read.
The book's writers, consultant and author Steve Chandler and construction executive Duane Black, have outlined a plan for transforming a company's culture from one of judgment and criticism to one of leading employees to contribute more than any goal or KPI will motivate them to achieve. The book makes a logical, persuasive case for managing people in a way that gets them thinking about how they can contribute to the success of the company, and in doing so, make work fun and rewarding. It teaches managers how to create constructive relationships with their employees, and in doing so, significantly reduce their own stress levels.
In my work as a corporate trainer, I began incorporating principles from the book into several training courses a few months ago. The effect the book has on each group of managers is the same. They recognize the truths contained in the book, see how applying them will reduce stress and make them more effective leaders, and ask for more training based on the principles in the book.
Read this book with thought and care, and you'll change the way you think about management and leadership.
The Hands-Off Manager.......2007-07-05
Great Book! I give this 5 stars. There are few people in life and business that look within and do their own internal work. There are a lot of teachers in the world that have helpful information. Then there are those few teachers that consistently look inside themselves and these are the true leaders of our world.
Duane Black is one of those leaders that is consistently walking his talk. As a successful small business owner for more than 20 years, I have recently found myself holding the position of manager of a small group of entrepreneurs. Duane Black and Steve Chandler's ability to take all different types of information and philosophies and bring them back to personal responsibility has been done with grace.
We are all observers of the people around us. A great manager is one that is observing himself and is by doing so, much more effective in assisting others in empowering themselves.
Great reading!
