Book Description

Restaurants are one of the most frequently started small businesses, yet have one of the highest failure rates. Survivors need a powerful strategic advantage: a sound business plan and feasibility study prior to opening. A new study from The Ohio State University has found the restaurant industry failure rate between 1996 and 1999 to be between 57-61 percent over three years. Don't be a statistic on the wrong side, plan now for success with this new book & CDRom package.

A business plan precisely defines your business, identifies your goals, and serves as your firm's resume. The basic components include a current and pro forma balance sheet, an income statement, and a cash flow analysis. It helps you allocate resources properly, handle unforeseen complications, and make good business decisions. Because it provides specific and organized information about your company and how you will repay borrowed money, a good business plan is a crucial part of any loan application. Additionally, it informs personnel, suppliers, and others about your operations and goals. Despite the critical importance of a business plan, many entrepreneurs drag their feet when it comes to preparing a written document. They argue that their marketplace changes too fast for a business plan to be useful or that they just don't have enough time. But just as a builder won't begin construction without a blueprint, eager business owners shouldn't rush into new ventures without a business plan.

The Cd Rom will cover the following subjects: Elements of a Business Plan, Cover sheet ,Statement of purpose, The Business, Description of The Restaurant, Marketing, Competition, Operating procedures, Personnel, Business insurance, Financial Data, Loan applications, Capital equipment and supply list, Balance sheet, Breakeven analysis, Pro-forma income projections (profit & loss statements), Three-year summary, Detail by month, first year, Detail by quarters, second and third years, Assumptions upon which projections were based, Pro-forma cash flow, Supporting Documents, For franchised businesses, a copy of franchise contract and all, supporting documents provided by the franchisor, Copy of proposed lease or purchase agreement for building space, Copy of licenses and other legal documents, Copy of resumes of all principals, Copies of letters of intent from suppliers, etc.

A new study from The Ohio State University has found the restaurant industry failure rate between 1996 and 1999 to be between 57-61 percent over three years. Don't be a statistic on the wrong side, plan now for success with this new book and CD-Rom package.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect tool for reassurance.......2007-05-13

Also has helpful contacts, web addresses, and other resources pertinent in educating someone on opening a restaurant.

5 out of 5 stars Opening a Restaurant or Other Food Business Starter Kit: How to Prepare a Restaurant Business Plan & Feasibility Study by Sharon.......2006-12-29

Sharon Fullen provides thought-provoking as well as practical steps to prepare for entrepreneurship by making the Readers aware that opening a restaurant is more than an idea but requires planning.

Not only are you moved to do more than come up with a wish list but one must take the time to write their vision, study the market, and come to terms if their business idea will be a profit maker or a profit shaker.

Such helpful information can propel the business in positive directions and bring about a boost in the economy by following the guidelines and suggestions within this book.

The added benefit of having a CD to provide hands-on experience of completing a business plan is another way the author shows her expertise in bringing the tools in the book to actual life for the Readers. The old saying that " experience is the best teacher" or "practice makes perfect" seems to have been a consideration of the author. This in my opinion sets this author apart from others.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for starting restaurant business.......2006-12-23

Before reading this book I have never thought that opening a small restaurant might be so involved process. But I guess it is better to learn it before you invest your money. I am glad I read this book it opened my eyes and allowed to look behind my dream of being a restaurant owner. I would not say this book discouraged me - not at all. I will be able to make more educated decisions instead of emotional ones.

Recommend it to everyone who thinks of opening a restaurant business.

4 out of 5 stars Guide for Starting a Restaurant.......2006-12-20

This Restaurant starter kit is a good reference as well as the companion CD that provides a sample business plan. From preliminary information gathering in preparation to writing the business plan such as market research, audience, expected clientele, scope of perceived services, menu planning this resource provides all the pieces necessary to guide you through the start-up process.
The section on software is expertly done in providing the layperson with a grasp of the software available and will save a fortune in missteps if read and followed. The choice in software can undoubtedly determine the quality and speed that you develop your plan.
Sharon Fullen does an exceptional job in guiding the layperson through the process of the feasibility analysis to include concept, location, execution and financing thus rounding out the completed business plan. The idea of a marketing plan is discussed showing the importance of a well-planned and executed marketing effort versus just tossing a few bucks to the wind and hoping for the best. The author has provided an invaluable tool for the upcoming restaurateur as he/she plans, develops and opens their life dream.

5 out of 5 stars Holding Success in Your Hand!.......2006-05-24

While this resource guide by Sharon Fullen may not deal with the most glamorous aspect of opening a new restaurant or other food business, it certainly discusses the most import: the business plan. The entire book and accompanying CD-ROM handles basic business preparation with aplomb. Starting with What is a Business Plan? and ending with an entire chapter devoted to an example of a sample business plan, Fullen leaves no stone unturned. She highlights business plan writing strategies, pinpoints problem areas that are often stumbling blocks to success, intersperses invaluable information on writing a feasibility analysis and deftly assists the reader with ideas on how to implement and understand successful marketing strategies. One section that should not be skipped discusses Getting Your Plan Published, offering tips on standing above the competition when presenting your business plan. The CD-ROM is an extra bonus that affords you the luxury of having printable examples and a portable way to use and share your new-found information. Opening a Restaurant or Other Food Preparation Starter Kit is a must-have resource for any aspiring restaurant owner; a resourceful guide that offers sound advice, concrete examples and hidden nuggets of valuable information that only serve to solidify a sound start to the opening of your new restaurant.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-02-08

I liked this book because it got straight to the point. He provides a through plan for your marketing plan. It interrelates all the departments that are affected by what marketing is doing. Ultimately, if you were going to present this plan to C-level management you would get their support. It shows that Marketing has worked with other departments to make a plan that the whole company can buy into.

I highly recommend it to someone that knows marketing but needs guidelines for putting together an effective plan.

5 out of 5 stars Basic and Comprehensive.......2002-03-05

Here in a single volume is an abundance of basic information and sound counsel which will be especially helpful to those involved in business development for small-to-midsize organizations. (I use the word "organizations" because non-profits as well as for-profits obviously need to increase revenue while strengthening relations with various constituencies.) Don't expect to find any cutting-edge thinking here. Because the material is basic, however, don't think that Luther has little of value to offer to marketing, sales, and other customer service professionals with many years of experience. He organizes the material within five Parts:

The Role of Marketing Within a Business

Decisions to Be Made Before Developing Your Marketing Plan

Developing Your Brand Personality

Developing Your Marketing Plan

Feedback: Using Controls and Market Research to Complete the Loop

Luther then provides three excellent appendices: A Marketing Plan Outline, Thirty-Eight Market Characteristics, and Explanation of the What-If Sales Model. I highly recommend this book to owners/managers of chain franchises (e.g. dry cleaners, quick-print shops, and even fast food restaurants) as well as to independent insurance agents, sole practicioner attorneys, and others selling goods or services who generally neglect business development among their clientele within their local community. Presumably Luther understands that much of his material will not be directly relevant to a given reader. To his credit, he provides more material than most readers need. It remains for each reader to determine which ideas and initiatives are most appropriate. I think all readers will benefit from the disciplined thinking which Luther advocates throughout the planning, implementation, evaluation, and modification process. Those who wish to explore additional resources are urged to check out Theodore Levitt's The Marketing Imagination (a "classic"), Al Ries and Jack Trout's Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind (another" classic"), Neil Rackham's SPIN Selling (another "classic", especially for those selling big ticket items), Jacques Werth's High Probability Selling: Re-Invents the Selling Process, Dan Seidman's The Death of 20th Century Selling: 50 Hilarious Sales Blunders and How You Can Profit from Them, and Carl Sewell's Customers for Life: How to Turn That One-Time Buyer into a Lifetime Customer...

5 out of 5 stars The best Marketing Guide I have seen........2001-09-28

As the National Director of Marketing for my firm, I read and use many different marketing books, manuals and reports. However, Marketing Plans, by Malcolm H.B. McDonald is the most complete guide I have found for actually designing a comprehensive and effective business plan. The layout of the book makes it useful to the novice as well as the experienced Marketing professional. The information is stated clearly, completely and effectively. In fact, I was so impressed, that I have totally redesigned our corporate marketing and branding plans using the information from this book as the basis for that design. Thanks for all the help Mr. McDonald!!!

5 out of 5 stars Super!.......2001-05-25

McDonald also wrote Key Account Management (more for salespeople) and co-wrote a smaller, but more difficult book called Marketing Plans the Work. This one (Marketing Plans: How to Write them, How to Use them) is more of a text book, which normally I think would make it more "dry" but in this case it's just the opposite: packed with information, useful exercises and a clear step-by-step approach to writing a real marketing plan. Academically sound but not "academic." Plus it can help you and your company get more of a marketing orientation, or at least understand what a "marketing orientation" is all about.

5 out of 5 stars The Source Book.......2000-07-13

Just bought my third copy... i give one away every year to a struggling marketeer. If you buy only one book on marketing, make it this one.

David Barnes Director of Market Analysis, Philips Components

5 out of 5 stars probably the best book on marketing planning ever published.......1999-08-06

First published in 1984, Marketing Plans is now an international marketing bestseller. Covering the application of basic marketing principles to sound business practice, it is essential reading for marketing practitioners and students the world over. The purpose of this book is quite simply to explain and demonstrate how to prepare and use a marketing plan. To this end, marketing managers and business executives concerned with profitability and sustained growth of their organisations have profitably used it as a practical guide. Clearly and powerfully written with step-by-step lucidity, it is probably the best book on the theory and practice of marketing planning ever published.

Authored by Malcolm McDonald, Professor of Marketing Strategy at the Cranfield School of Management and the acknowledged world authority on marketing planning and strategy, this thoroughly updated and redesigned fourth edition contains new material on growth areas such as key account management and electronic marketing. Its brand new two-colour graphic design with revised page layout and enhanced learning features provides maximum clarity, much like a typical US College textbook. Definitions of important terms and vocabulary are provided as margin notes to allow for smoother, easier reading of the text. Exercises appear at the end of each chapter to translate the theories into action.

This complete learning package focuses on key recent developments in marketing techniques and provides a range of practical marketing tools. The reader is taken through the whole process of marketing planning-from the initial assessment of a company's business plan, to the steps necessary to ensure a company achieves its profit targets. The first 12 chapters help the reader understand both the process and diagnostic tools of marketing planning whilst the final 13th chapter is a clear step-by-step guide to devising your own marketing plan, combining current best practice with the necessary theoretical background.

This book is recommended reading for marketers, executives and students studying for the Chartered Institute of Marketing's Certificate and Diploma examinations. In a nutshell, there is no better book that covers the whole process of marketing planning.

Product Description

A study by MCI found that most professionals believe that over 50 percent of meeting time is wasted. More than 90 percent admit to daydreaming in meetings, 73 percent have brought other work, and 39 percent have fallen asleep. You might think that there would be fewer meetings. However, in the survey 46 percent said they attended more meetings than a year ago. Meetings cost time and money. Many meetings end with no results or outcome. How can you be sure you are using your time and money effectively? The answer: with proper training. Even MBA graduates have never had a course in how to plan, organize, and present an effective meeting. That is the subject of this new book which will teach the proper skills and training to get great results with every meeting, every time! You will learn the checklists for planning your meeting, setting the agenda, strategic planning, how the physical setting can be improved, how to properly open a meeting, handling difficult people and maintaining control, how to assess and evaluate your meetings, and the correct method to end a meeting. Good meetings don t just happen, they are planned and created.

5 out of 5 stars A 5-Star Planner for Meetings.......2007-09-30

Shri Henkel has done an outstanding job on this book. It is interesting and fun to read and will be interesting and fun to execute her wonderful ideas. Invaluable to the successful business person!

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to great meetings.......2007-08-28

Meetings have to rank as one of the most loathed activities in modern corporate life. While the idea of coming together as a group to collectively solve problems or brainstorm new ideas sounds good, poor planning and management too often leads to fuzzy, disorganized sessions in stuffy conference rooms. In surveys, 90% of respondents admit to daydreaming during meetings, almost 75% say they have sometimes brought other work, and 9% say they have fallen asleep.

Shri Henkel believes she knows how to change all that. Her book, Successful Meetings: How to Plan, Prepare and Execute Top-Notch Business Meetings, is a great step-by-step guide running meetings that produce results. Rather than begin from the premise that all meetings are necessary, Henkel starts out by suggesting that the reader ask themselves a very basic question: is this meeting really necessary? Could these issues be tackled in a different way? She even suggests costing the meeting out, so the reader can see how much money a meeting will consume in staff salary, equipment costs, and of course, snacks.

Once you've determined that a meeting is necessary, Henkel has a wide variety of ideas on how to set agendas and keep to it, how to encourage active participation among staff, how to capture ideas for later use, and how to receive feedback so the next meeting is even better. An entire chapter is devoted to feel-good "team building" exercises designed to open up communications and get the thoughts flowing. All in all, this would be a great book for any middle or upper-level manager looking to run their meetings more effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Chapters will keep business leaders on track as they outline proven, effective methods.......2007-06-09

Shri Henkel's SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS: HOW TO PLAN, PREPARE, AND EXECUTE TOP-NOTCH BUSINESS MEETINGS provides an easy to read book on the entire planning process, from budgeting and using time and money more effectively to setting an agenda, meeting goals, and evaluating both participants and objectives. Chapters will keep business leaders on track as they outline proven, effective methods for starting and conducting a meeting and survey common pitfalls to success.

5 out of 5 stars Taking Meetings To A New Level.......2007-03-26

Change is difficult. Much as we love new ideas and new technology, changing to respond to innovations, competitive threats and opportunities is often seen as an arduous process. People who can manage change are leaders who command respect and admiration within their organizations.

Meetings are a key part of managing change. Whether you are brainstorming, planning or presenting results, more often than not you will be doing it in a meeting as part of a group process. Understanding what makes a meeting a success will help you create vibrant, productive forums where you can achieve common objectives.

"Successful Meetings" teaches you the art of creating a successful meeting. Whether it's arranging the room, inviting the right people or using the right technology, Shri Henkel takes you step-by-step through the process of running any type of meeting and provides valuable insights along the way. If your meetings aren't motivating, or worse yet, if they are "good enough", you need this book. Read it and your commitment to excellence will be well rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about meetings.......2007-03-24

This book could help anyone create a successful meeting. I've had meetings before where only 3 people show up on time (out of 15 invitees!) and I didn't know what to do. If I had read this book then, I would have known how to encourage prompt arrival prior to the meeting and wouldn't have had that problem. I really like the section on how to set up the room. At my office, most of the meeting rooms are already arranged, but if I took the time to rearrange the chairs, it would have a dramatic effect on the participation. Overall, this book provides a great overview for how to lead a meeting that gets results. It covers the basic logistical issues as well as tips for encouraging participation, leading brainstorming sessions, who you really need to invite (and not invite), and ideas for resolving personal conflicts between participants. Henkel provides checklists and forms to make the planning process easy and fool-proof. Also, the writing style is simple and easy to understand, including many lists that help clarify the topic. The section on icebreakers is very useful, especially if you are leading a meeting for people that don't always work together as a group. Often, these icebreakers can make for a more productive meeting since people are more likely to share their ideas with people they feel they know. I would recommend this book to anyone planning on leading a meeting (big or small). It will make a world of difference!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The author is my father.......2007-08-02

Given the obvious conflict of interest, I would rather not have given a rating, though I think the book is very clear and useful. Others have thought so too: it has been published in many languages and on many continents, and continues to sell year after year, as the publishers keep asking my father to work on new editions.

The book is organized as a series of case studies (the names have been changed to protect the 'innocent') of people who started businesses, the problems they faced, their attempts (successful or otherwise) to cope with them, and their excitement as they realize they are actually succeeding.

The focus of the book is on how to write a business plan in such a way as to persuade a bank to lend you money. This is often one of the first problems a budding entrepreneur faces, which is fortunate because writing the plan forces him/her to think about the problems likely to face him, and to plan for success.
