Book Description
A practical guide to building fully operational financial cash flow models for structured finance transactions
Structured finance and securitization deals are becoming more commonplace on Wall Street. Up until now, however, market participants have had to create their own models to analyze these deals, and new entrants have had to learn as they go. Modeling Structured Finance Cash Flows with Microsoft Excel provides readers with the information they need to build a cash flow model for structured finance and securitization deals. Financial professional Keith Allman explains individual functions and formulas, while also explaining the theory behind the spreadsheets. Each chapter begins with a discussion of theory, followed by a section called "Model Builder," in which Allman translates the theory into functions and formulas. In addition, the companion CD-ROM features all of the modeling exercises, as well as a final version of the model that is created in the text.
Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

Good Intro to Cash Flow Modeling.......2007-09-20
Anyone needing to learn how structured finance cash flow models work will benefit from going through this book and building the spreadsheet-based model it describes. It will be faster if you are already good at using Excel for complex modeling or pricing, but there is a fair amount of Excel advice for those who need it. The book models a single pool of mortgages that can be described by weighted average statistics incorporating both prepayment and default scenarios. Great care is taken to make the model flexible in terms of the kinds of mortgages in the pool. On the liability side the model allows for the creation of a single senior class and a sub class with an interest rate swap and a reserve. While very good for learning the cash flow consequences of sequential and pro rata payment waterfalls, this model cannot describe the structures actually issued in the market. The skills learned, however, should allow the reader to build models capable of modeling issued structures.
The writing is clear and the examples are explained well. The flow of cash into and out of the structure is emphasized by clear inputs, cash flow modeling and summary outputs.
Excellent introduction to MBS modeling.......2007-08-13
Keith's book saved me hours of trial-and-error effort with Excel for modeling structured transactions. This book takes a simple, step-by-step approach to help the reader understand the mechanics of building the cash flow model for Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS).
Once you understand the basics of model creation and cash flow, then it is a matter of refining your skills by revere-engineering more MBS transactions out there. You will find all the basic tools to become proficient in that task by following this book.
Excellent Hands-On Introduction to Structured Finance.......2007-06-03
In structured finance, there is a tremendous discrepancy between academic literature and practice. In purporting a generalizable, scientific approach, many textbooks avoid explaining the intracacies of actual structured finance deals. The fundamental issue is that the implicit value of deal transparency required for issuer and investor tends to be overlooked by authors approaching the field from an academic background. Technical pyrotechnics that suit liquid markets fail when fees, interest rates, and other deal specifics are malleable constructs negotiated among a handful of parties. At the same time, basic bond math on an unsegregated pool of loans cannot accurately describe how assets generate cash flows and the risks faced by investors.
MFSC is the *only* book (afaik) that demonstrates how real structured finance pros bridge the void between these 2 common pitfalls made by other structured finance books. For one, the calculations that belie each component of a structured finance deal is integrated into a single model rather than considered separately. Other books may describe how cash flows pay out in a senior-sub structure, but they won't, for example, take the time to step through how funding costs and triggers affect the cash flows. The primary model also gives the user flexibility to stress the model and enables the user to treat the model as a base for all structured finance deals. Through a neatly organized inputs sheet, each component in the primary model described painstakingly anticipates the gamut of variations common to these types of deals.
All this in a book that's easy to follow and a delight to read. Five stars.
Modeling of CMBS.......2007-06-03
Keith's book does an excellent job at helping both new analysts to MD's in understanding modeling of complex master tapes (models). If you need to know how to structure a fixed or floating rate transaction this book will give you key tools to understand, build and read strats, term sheets, and OC data. Many of the functions and formulas that are explained are used in real working models but in additon to that this book explains key concepts in the structured finance world. Unlike other books this book has a much more active learning style and really gets you involved.
I look forward to the day when Keith writes a book focusing on CMBS, I will defintely buy that one also.

Very Good for Professionals.......2007-05-07
The book explains very well the building and works of a very huge excell worsheet, for professionals it will be a great and interesting reading, and sometimes it will be like a great novel, when you can't stop reading
and always want to go to the next chapter before leaving it.
For begineers it will be a little hard to understand the concepts and the meanings of each chapter, but it will help too.

Essential guide for HR staff.......2001-04-24
Anyone who has watched the matketplace over the last ten years has observed a couple of trends:
- merger and acquisition activity is on an ever-accelerating uptrend, and
- many mergers fail.
Analysis of the failures in M&A typically point to the difficulty of blending disparate cultures.
Hanson has codified her deep experience in managing the HR aspects of mergers and acquisitions. She has taken a complex and delicate topic, the merger of workforces with different cultures and backgrounds, and created a framework and approach that can be applied to this activity to assure a solid result.
This is a solid piece of work that belongs in the library of every HR professional.

Good persuasion tool for managers.......2007-05-18
This is not the best media skills book on the market, especially if you are working with volunteer or advocacy groups who need things broken down more simply and visually. However, it covers the basics and works well as an academic "bible" if you need to convince peers or management to adopt new tactics. Every PR pro can whine for hours about clients and bosses who don't want to grasp the importance of identifying goals and target audiences before jumping into the tactics. (Too many people think seeing a news clip or their name in the paper is success, even if it doesn't really help advance their cause.) This book gives a good overview for managers seeking an understanding of strategy and is a "valid" source when pros are making the case to be more strategic when developing a media plan so that organizations can win.
Excellent book for beginners in non-profit PR.......2004-08-11
I use this book to teach a beginning workshop in public relations for non-profit organizations as part of a continuing education program at a local community college. The book is an excellent resource for individuals who are not familar with public relations. It takes the reader through all of the things that he or she will need to do to effectively promote his or her organization.
Quite Useful for Students.......2002-08-21
The Jossey-Bass Guide to Strategic Communications for Nonprofits is a detailed examination of the relationship between nonprofits and the media. As the title says, it provides a step-by-step guide for nonprofits to establish effective relations with the media that result in publicity. My professor recommended this book to me, and I'm finding it quite useful. It has a similar approach to Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine; both are about maximizing your return on investment.
I especially enjoyed this book because I'm thinking about working for a nonprofit after graduation, and I haven't seen anywhere near as much about public relations and publicity for nonprofits as I've seen for corporations.
Book Description
John Carver's groundbreaking Policy Governance model has influenced the way public and nonprofit boards operate around the world. Now, as widespread experience with the model continues to grow, nonprofit and public board members can find a powerful resource and first-choice reading in the John Carver Set.
In the bestselling Boards That Make a Difference, Second Edition, John Carver enriches his definitive exposition with updated policy samples, a new chapter on the process of policy development, and additional resources for various types of boards. With creative insight and commonsense practicality, Carver presents a bold new approach to board job design, board-staff relationships, the chief executive role, performance monitoring, and virtually every aspect of the board-management relationship. In their stead, he offers a board model designed to produce policies that make a difference, missions that are clearly articulated, standards that are ethical and prudent, meetings, officers, and committees that work; and leadership that supports the fulfillment of long-term goals.
A natural companion to Boards That Make a Difference, Reinventing Your Board is John Carver and Miriam Mayhew Carver's recipe for putting Policy Governance into practice. With 25 figures, policy samples, forms, and other practical, "put-the-model-in-motion" materials, this is the nuts-and-bolts materials that Carvers' followers have been requesting. The authors illustrate effective board decision making, show how to craft useful policies, and offer practical advice on such matters as setting the agenda, monitoring CEO performance, defining the board role, and more. Step-by-step instructions and sample policies make this a valuable resource for boards in the public and nonprofit sectors.
Customer Reviews:
Practical implementation for Policy Governance.......2004-10-31
This book is designed to help boards implement the Policy Governance(r) model in their board of directors. Step-by-step instructions for how to write your first set of explicit policy statements--ends, staff limitations, board staff linkage, and board process. Some organizations have been able to implement Policy Governance using this book without the help of consulting services. Others have used this with the help of a consultant. Practical, clear, usable.
a disappointment.......2002-06-02
As someone who has had twenty years of experience both at the executive level within nonprofit organizations and on the boards of others, I found this book disappointing narrow in focus, overly dependent on specialized jargon, and rather uninspiring. When Carver talks about "policy governance" he means his very specialized theory, the Carver theory on board organization. "Step by step guide" means a highly detailed and technical presentation of the Carver system. Essentially this book may be useful as a handbook to those who hire Carver or consultants who follow this particular system. I think this book is being sold to people who will form mistaken impressions based on Carver's reputation. The title "reinventing your board" is misleading in tone because the book is really intended ONLY for people who have "bought into" Carver's highly detailed system and who already have very strong familiarity with his way of thinking. Business books about "reinventing" generally try to inspire, offering a mine of interesting examples, and at their best, teach by "showing." While there are some very useful and important observations and suggestions embedded in the book, the pedantic style and insistence on numbered, sequential steps made me feel as though I were reading a manual about reinstalling Windows 98.
Brief, readable, and pragmatic advice for effective boards.......2000-10-05
Although its style is more academic than members of many all-volunteer organizations might wish, this book is short enough to be read on a board member's tight schedule, and pithy enough to provide ideas that can truly give a new perspective on problems in the board meeting. Carver makes it clear that board leadership is best when it distinguishes between ends and means, and that governance (and the highest satisfaction for board members) lies in articulating ends and the route to those ends. This book, for me, answered the question of why organizations might not get a lot done despite diligent meeting schedules and full agendas.
Great counsel on Board/CEO relationship.......2000-08-12
Twenty years of working at CEO for a Board governed organization with 500 members. Numerous Board training seminars and this is the most practical counsel I have received. It is a hands on book, providing a model that will work for your organization.

Product Description
Package comes equipped with a 32-page guidebook, a one hour play along cd and a 30 minute instructional video. Learn, hear and see proper playing techniques from an expert.
Customer Reviews:
Not an instructional or method book.......2004-05-24
I would not reccommend this package for anyone with little or no music experience. This is not the instructional book that I had expected. Essentially, it's a collection of short pieces designed for a novice violinist, that start easy and gradually get more difficult. There is no useful information with regards to technical methods for playing these pieces, so you actually are expected to teach yourself, as the title implies.
I haven't seen the video (my VCR is broken), but the CD is good to play along to, although it's so-called slow tempo for each excercise is almost unnoticabley slower than the moderate version that follows it. It would be more useful (and less annoying) to simply have a single track for each excerise rather than two. The guitar accompaniment is a nice touch, though.
I've played piano for 11 years, and guitar for 4, so learning the violin has not been difficult for me. I would however, reccommend purchasing another book to go along with this. I bought this along with Mel Bay's Violin Primer, and found the two to complement each other very well. Don't buy this on its own if you expect to learn how to get started.
Definitely not for beginners!!.......2003-12-07
I just recently took up the violin and bought this thinking it would give me a jump start before I started lessons. I was wrong. First of all, the teacher on the accompanying instructional video has zero personality, something that I find very unmotivating. Also, there is not much in the way of demonstration. She will tell you, for instance, to play the G scale, then she will proceed to play through the entire scale without actually showing you what to do. There is no way anybody could learn to play on their own using this method. At the very best, this is a music book - that's all. My advice is to save your money and spend it instead on a real violin lesson.
Teach Yourself Violin (Step One).......2003-06-24
This book and accompanying CD is not for someone who knows absolutely nothing about a violin and reading music. The first pages of the book are good then it "jumps right into it" making you feel like something is missing. The CD is also advanced. I expected something more on the lines of fingering and wrist techniques, reading music, etc. If this is what you need and are looking for, it's not in this book.
Pretty good.......2002-02-24
This book is pretty good. It teaches scales which is what you need. Instead of Mary had a little lamb(like most beginner books have), your actually learning something that is useful.

Customer Reviews:
His earlier book was good on planning........2003-06-10
This review refers to McLaughlin's superb earlier edition The Entrepreneur's Guide To Building A Better Business Plan.
More than a guide to developing a business plan I found this book provided practical input to planning a business in general. Unlike many texts dealing with this subject, this book has the practical tone of someone who had done it before. McLaughlin asks good questions and makes many suggestions with regard to addressing business strategy and tactical issues. He gets right into the detail of planning with an extensive chapter on writing department plans. Another chapter discusses partnering as a potential new business strategy. The book includes case studies, and discusses some particular examples of both business success and failure.
McLaughlin is an engineer who was involved in the early days of the disk drive industry, and is one of the founders of the disk drive industry's trade association. He later became an industry analyst and published a weekly newsletter on the industry. The book evolved out of work done in writing his doctoral thesis.
Though many of the sources are now dated, the book includes a bibliography useful to business planning including sources on market research, writing business plans, and reading financial statements.
I would recommend this book to anyone planning a new business or overhauling an existing business or division. Too bad the book is no longer in print, however I found that my local public library had copies.
Book Description
The Natural Step for Business examines how four very successful "evolutionary" corporations in Sweden and the United States - including IKEA and Scandic Hotels in Sweden, and Collins Pine and Interface in the U.S. - are positioning themselves for long-term competitiveness using The Natural Step as a central part of their corporate strategy. Nattrass and Altomare puncture the myth that a company must choose between profitability and care for the natural environment, and present a timely and practical application of this exciting model for global sustainability.
Customer Reviews:
Companies on the right road........2001-08-18
Exceptional book describing the background of the Natural Step process but more importantly provides evidence that companies who embrace sustainabilty in every aspect will be well rewarded for their efforts. Well done with loads of detail.
An excellent applied reference on The Natural Step.......1999-07-11
The authors provide a real service with this book. So far much of the published work on The Natural Step framework has remained conceptual, without a lot of practical examples of the model in practice. The case examples of IKEA, Collins Pine, and Interface provide valuable references for organizational managers and consultants who are working to build more sustainable organizations. I highly recommend this book.
The Natural Step in action - great practical case-studies!.......1999-06-27
This is a terrifc book in that it not only lucidly explains the framework of the Natural Step but also gives some excellent practical examples of major corporations starting down the path towards sustainability. This will give them a great competitive edge. With examples like the Natural Step model being applied by the likes of IKEA and Interface one can remain optimistic in the face of the torrent of negatives about the degenerating nature of the world environment. I hope that this book will encourgae others to look nto what the Natural Step has to offer..
A clear, wonderful book........1999-04-29
This is a clear and wonderful book that makes a compelling case for a new environmental awareness in business and industry. The style is graceful, the chapter organization is easy to follow, and there are many charts and diagrams that enhance the book. I was extremely impressed, and I recommend the book highly.
