Configuring SAP R/3 FI/CO: The Essential Resource for Configuring the Financial and Controlling Modules

Book Description
In addition to the typical coverage of business reengineering that a company will go through when implementing SAP, this book also provides you with vital information on each of the modules, changes that will impact each department of a company, and how you can best prepare for the implementation. New chapters cover the enhancements included in SAP R/3 4.0. New chapters on rapid implementation, vertical market strategies, and smaller business implementation replace some general management practice chapters. A unique section (of six chapters) provides advice and strategies for getting into the SAP consulting market--and what the outlook for SAP consultants is becoming.
Customer Reviews:
Thousands of pages of bulletted lists. Useless........2004-09-14
Someone mentioned that it is a thousand page brochure. Right on the (wasted) money sir! I bought this book to gain some insight into SAP. But this book was a great disappointment. Words don't come to me to describe my disgust after wasting 75 dollars on this book. Just because SAP knowledge isn't easily available, people like me keep wasting our money on whatever is available in the market. I have learned my lesson, now I spend a couple of hours sitting in Barnes and Noble before making a decision to buy.
The only reason I give it one star is ... there is no option to give a zero star.
Good reference book for SAP Implementation.......2002-08-31
This book's orientation is different from many other SAP books. The target segment for this book appears to be prospective SAP Consultants aspiring to be involved in implementation of projects, personnel in the Implementing organisation whose services will be used in implementation and end user. These days many people get trained/ acquire knowledge in SAP modules such as FI-CO, Logistics, SD, HRMS, etc by attending training courses in various Computer Training Institutes. Some even work as Trainee Consultants in some organisations. The real-life Implementation experience is all together different from what these people learn in Institutes. I feel that this book will be certainly helpful to fill such gap between real-life Implementation exp and learnings. At least, the book will enable the reader what to do when he is put in the project for the first time. Good points abt this book: 1. It gives good view of R/3 architecture 2. Giving ideas about possible Implementation issues that can arise 3. Inputs for preparing a good SAPper CV 4. Employment opportunities in SAP. Negative points: Jack of all, master of none! Inadequate coverage of various modules, which is understandable!
Conclusion: The user level is mentioned as Intermediate to Advanced in the back cover, but I feel that this book is only suitable to Beginners to Intermediate level.
Jack of all master of none.........1999-07-26
This was my first book on SAP, it did help to get an overview nothing more. If you're planning to ge t specialized in ABAP or any Module then better forget this one.
Worthless in regards to Basis module..........1999-06-29
Comparable to "Freshman 101". Don't bother
Anticlimax.......1999-06-22
Lame result of an ambitious and wordy project. The book targets a too broad audience and in the process it misses much of its value. Nevertheless, this book has a virtue as a good source of reference for SAP project management and business process overviews.

Customer Reviews:
I wish I had my money back........2000-10-03
This book was a waste of time and money. This is the worst technical book I have ever read. The second bullet on the the cover states, "Learn how to develop and intergrate the SD module with your existing SAP R/3 system.". This is very misleading as this book is nothing more than a high-level overview of SD and goes into no detail on "how" to develop anything. I also have the MM book by the same name and it also is worthless.
No customising!.......2000-05-12
I should have paid more attention to the title. It's called "Administering" SAP R/3 and not "Customising". It explains how to use the different SD functions not how to implement them. Unfortunately, it cannot be recommended to users either because it is too technical and does not explain things in a comprehensive manner. There are some books that emphasise the business process and help you decide how to implement this in SAP. This is not one of them. This book is smack in the middle of a no-mans land. It's no good for customising, no good for users and no good for planning business processes.
I totally agree with some of the other reviewers. Your better off with the online documentation.
Save your bucks. Don't waste them on this book.
Incidently, if your looking for a book on SD customising, I can recommend "Implementing SAP Sales and Distribution": 5 stars!
Publication of the SAP online help!.......2000-03-18
This book offers no help at all in configuring the SD module.
It basically just explains all the functionality that is available in the SD module, without explaining how you can configure SAP to use the functionality.
If you are buying the book to see what SAP SD can do, fine. But if you want to configure the module, try another book! I recommend the SD book by Glynn Williams from McGraw Hill.
I have also read the MM and FI-CO books in the ASAP series, and they are the same! - they cover the functionality and not the configuration.
And even though these books cover the functionality, they don't explain how to use it effectively, they just tell you what functionality is available.
You may as well spend some time using the SAP online help.
I suppose these books were great when SAP was new and not many people understood it, but now the market is more intelligent and aware of what SAP can do the market expects quality information on configuring the SAP system and using it to solve business situations.
A waste of money & time.......1999-08-12
I'm very dissapointed with this book. It does not deliver what it should. All are explained very briefly & i think R/3 help is way much helpful than this book .
Poor tree!!.......1999-03-11
Much of the content and context is in SAPs on-line help files. The title is quite misleading... buyers beware!
I looked at some of the other books in this series, as well, and had a similar reaction.
The majority of people want configuration information, not a re-worded version of the help files. R/3 is about configuration, configuration and configuration!!
Book Description
Before use, standard ERP systems such as SAP R/3 need to be customized to meet the concrete requirements of the individual enterprise. This book provides an overview of the process models, methods, and tools offered by SAP and its partners to support this complex and time-consuming process. It begins by characterizing the foundations of the latest ERP systems from both a conceptual and technical viewpoint, whereby the most important components and functions of SAP R/3 are described. The main part of the book then goes on to present the current methods and tools for the R/3 implementation based on newer process models (roadmaps).
Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginners.......2003-03-25
It is my first book on SAP R/3, it was really helpfull during my college clases.
Save your money, read on-line help or ASAP CD's.......2001-09-09
All of the information is available on-line either in "Help" or SAP's ASAP discs. Does a reasonable job of condesing down to 180+ pages. Targeted towards the first time SAP user NOT experienced users/consultants.
Book Description
Inter-organizational cooperation has become increasingly important in firms` strategies. This book provides a brief introduction to the theory of cooperation and the foundations of logistics, service management, and supply chain management. The main focus of the book, however, is to examine the use of SAP systems for supporting inter-organizational cooperation (in particular supply chain coordination). The authors present both well-known logistics solutions, e. g. EDI, and the implementations of state-of-the-art supply chain solutions using SAP systems such as mySAP.com, SAP APO, SAP LES, SAP BBP, SAP Business Information Warehouse, and Internet Applications. In particular, the book contains a number of case studies which show the application of the systems in practice.
Customer Reviews:
Focused on the topic and practical - highly recommended.......2002-07-03
This book's primary audience consists of SAP consultants and IT business systems analysts, and the ideal secondary audience should consist of business process owners in an R/3 environment, IT managers in all functional areas who are involved with developing, implementing and supporting supply chain and extended logistics solutions.
The theme is logistics management, using SAP, in an extended supply chain or a corporate hub and their vendors. There are three key sub themes in the book: (1) an explanation of the business benefits of extending buyer-seller systems in an extended supply chain (with an emphasis on using the Internet as the communications infrastructure), (2) specifics on how to accomplish this using SAP, and (3) evidence that it can be done.
I like the practical approach taken by the authors - instead of succumbing to the temptation to careen off into blue sky solutions, they stick with what can be done in the here and now. Although it's almost blasphemy to discuss EDI when everyone else seems to be hyping web services and other approaches and solutions that are relatively new, the authors show the strengths and weaknesses of this proven approach. They also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of XML, although ebXML is curiously missing. The reason its absence is so curious is that the EC appears to be wholeheartedly embracing it, and this book has a distinct European bias, especially in the chosen case studies.
More importantly, though, this book goes into the details SAP's internet components and how they relate to other modules that support logistics and supply chain management for an enterprise. The details go well beyond technology - this book gives equal treatment to business and technical issues, and that is one of the reasons why it's so valuable to the primary and secondary audiences I cited above. Although I thought ebXML should have been covered in depth, I found this book to be complete and to realistically cover the topic's key issues.

Book Description
Make The E-Business Workplace Work For You
From the consultants at PricewaterhouseCoopers and SAP come the keys to understanding and taking advantage of the most exciting development in the world of business technology-the e-business workplace. Written in language that is accessible to all executives and managers, in any company and industry-not just to information technology professionals-the authors explain how this user-oriented, people-friendly technology can transform your organization by empowering collaboration among its employees and value network partners. Here are answers to such critical questions as:
- How can you use workplace technology to move from integration to true collaboration?
- What are the advantages of a truly people-friendly technology?
- Does workplace technology add value?
- How are roles different from jobs, and how does the e-business workplace use roles to help people perform their jobs more effectively and efficiently?
- What are the components of workplace technology software, and how do you choose a product best suited to your organization?
- Can the e-business workplace help your organization manage change?
- Where does workplace technology fit within the broader e-business context?
- Can the e-business workplace help your organization achieve its vision?
In answering these questions, the authors support their conclusions with numerous real-world examples that move the theory behind workplace technology into practice.
The E-Business Workplace also provides insights and knowledge found nowhere else, based on the thousands of technology implementations in which they and their organizations have been integrally involved. Take this opportunity to learn about a critically important technology that may be the defining factor in determining success and failure in an increasingly complex Internet-enabled economy.
Customer Reviews:
Discover, Develop, and Then Leverage.......2001-04-11
In their extraordinarily informative Introduction, the authors explain that the contemporary workplace is "industry-specific, role-based, and personalized....What we mean by industry-specific is fairly obvious: information, applications, and services accessible through the workplace are relevant to an appropriate industry." as for "role-based and "personalized", they require a bit more definition which the authors then provide. They correctly assert that marketplaces "are becoming increasingly critical components of the e-business economy." They are "business hubs" on the Internet through which companies can buy, sell, or trade goods, services, and information with current business partners or with new customers or suppliers. In their fine book, the authors examine "the ramifications of workplaces for businesses of all kinds and provide insight into how most effectively to exploit their full potential to companies seeking success in the present and future e-business environment." The material is distributed within 12 chapters:
From Integration to Collaboration [a three-phase process]
People Matter: The Human Dimension [e.g. Every Individual Can Be a System Integrator]
Value Proposition for E-Business and Workplaces [e.g. Key E-Business Benefits]
The Workplace and Its Roles [e.g. Role Components]
A Day in the Life of a Workplace [i.e. the roles of CFO, Sales Manager, and Field Service Engineer]
Communities and Marketplaces [e.g. Marketplace Guiding Principles]
A Day in the Life of Community Marketplaces
Workplace Technology [e.g. Workplace Features]
From Change Management to Manageable Change [e.g. Knowledge Management]
Implementing a Workplace and Driving Business Value
E-Business and the Workplace: A Broad View
Getting to Where You Want to Be [e.g. Managing Expectations]
The reader is also provided with a Glossary and then an Appendix which explains how to use the CD-ROM provided ("mySAP Workplace -- The Enterprise Portal solution"). This is a cohesive and comprehensive book, well-written, and anchored in a wealth of real-world experience gained by the authors over many years in their respective positions within the PricewaterhouseCoopers and SAP organizations. They really know their stuff.
A brief commentary such as this simply cannot acknowledge many or even a few of the key expository passages in this book. Suffice to say that the authors thoroughly cover each of the subjects indicated by the chapter titles, in process explaining precisely HOW to discover, develop, and then leverage the power of enterprise portals. What is the critical difference between integration and collaboration? What should be the relationship between technology and those who use it? What impact can that relationship have? What is an appropriate value proposition for e-business and workplaces? These and other important questions are rigorously addressed. Were a higher rating available, I would give it to this book.

Flying Start with SAP R/3.......2001-03-05
Great layout and colour format. I feel this is the book you need from day one of working with SAP R/3 to impress your employer. The first half of the book is very easy to get through and is also easily understandable where ever you are in the organisation. However the majority of the second half of the book relies heavily on HR scenarios, which is not mentioned in the 'Editorial Review'. If you are within the HR activity this is excellent. Not to say the book falls down at this point. The scenarios are transferable but it might have been better to include examples from other areas such as Warehouse Management or to mention the HR perspective in the Editorial Review.

Good Book.......2002-01-16
I really liked this book. It was very informative. Although published by HP Press, the book talks extensively about other Unix platforms as well as NT. The book is probably one year old by now, but I still recommend it. The authors cover almost every hardware option you can think of. A must read for any IT person planning an SAP Implementation.
Excellent reference on SAP Infrastructure.......2001-05-25
I highly recommend this book to companies that are going to start an SAP project. The book provides the foundation to design and build a solid technical infrastructure for SAP. Moreover, it is easy to read, covers every aspect, and is plenty of examples.
I am an experienced SAP technical consultant and wish this book were available some years ago. On common problem I have seen is that companies don't understand, from the infrastructure point of view, what an SAP project involves. The objective of this book is to make them aware of what they don't know (and could hurt them) at the right time, which is before the project actually starts.
Very Good Book for beginners or experts.......2000-12-12
I wish that I had this book when we started our SAP project. This book will help anyone who is thinking about installing or upgrading SAP. It helps explain how SAP software will use the hardware. And how all of the pieces fit together. Even though this book is by HP press it stays true to the theme. They do try and "sell" HP hardware or solutions every once in awhile, but for the most part this book is generic in vendor. You won't go wrong with reading this book or just having it for reference the next time you have to upgrade your hardware or if you are having response problems and need to know how to evaluate your hardware. We have been an SAP customer for six years and have grown up with SAP in the US (started at version 2.1 and have just completed our 4.6 upgrade!).

A Very Poor Effort - practically useless.......2000-04-10
I found this book a very poor effort. This is neither a hands-on approach or a practical approach. It is full of waffle and I get the impression that the authors were not really sure of the subject they wrote about. I look forward to the book that Gareth M. De Bruyn will write on R/3 & the Internet !
Good Textbook at the University of Washington.......2000-02-12
I am using this book as one of my required textbooks this quarter at the University of Washington. As indicated by the title of the book, the focus of the book is on how current SAP R/3 users can make R/3's functions available over the Internet. The authors have not attempted to explain similar efforts by the other major ERP vendors.
As a professor, my choices of books and of ERP systems have been easy. SAP has provided its R/3 system to more than 70 American universities and to more than 350 universities worldwide. Only recently did J.D. Edwards start a grant program for universities. Anyone may search amazon.com's database and discover that there are very few books available on any aspect of the other ERP systems. The authors of this book should be applauded for writing an excellent book for use in universities.
As a professor, I expect authors to provide a theoretical framework in the first chapter. These authors passed my test by covering basic concepts of the extended supply chain in the first chapter. Systems developers need to understand why they are developing a new system and how to evaluate the success or failure of the new system. The authors have not provided a step-by-step guide for developers and for programmers. Readers will not find a CD-ROM at the back of the book. Instead, the authors have explained what you need to know about SAP R/3 and about the Internet to make them work together.
The authors discussed centralized, loosely coupled, and decentralized systems. A correct representation of the views of the authors about the use of mainframe computers may be found on page 18: "There is one exception: mainframe systems, such as those used in many large enterprises, for example insurance companies. Terminals attached to these systems cannot accept the client software required for the Internet." The authors understand the difference between a mainframe computer and a terminal.
For an opposing view, I require my students to read Andrew White's white paper: "The Value Equation: Value Chain Management, Collaboration and the Internet." This white paper explains why Logility, Inc. has taken a different approach to extended supply chain management than that taken by the ERP system vendors. You may find the white paper at the Collaboration Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment site: http://www.cpfr.org/
My students must read also the excellent materials you may find at the Web sites of RosettaNet and of the Uniform Code Council: http://www.rosettanet.org/ http://www.uc-council.org/
In sum, this is a good, introductory book for SAP R/3 users who want to provide R/3's functions over the Internet. There are already entire books on supply chain management and on the Internet. This book provides a good starting point for understanding how to combine SAP R/3 and the Internet. Someday, perhaps other vendors will find the courage to provide their systems and books for critical evaluation and use in universities. I am still waiting for other reviewers to cite better books.
Not good value for money.......1999-10-10
This is a very one sided and very SAP-oriented book, but it will give you an indication of the SAP-blessed way of doing things. Just be aware there are lots of falsehoods and generalizations, e.g. "mainframes cannot connect to the internet.", when one of the first successful things of the internet was LISTSERVs from the IBM VM operating system long before SAP could even pronounce let alone spell internet. Like most SAP stuff it pats SAP liberally on the back and paints themselves as the conveyers of "THE TRUTH". If you read it with a critical eye and believe about one half it is a good book and at the very least when people start slinging the buzzwords which is a favourite pastime in the SAP world you will be able to accurately gauge there knowledge.
I agree with the Synopsis above.......1999-10-06
Never having worked with SAP R/3 or ABAP/4 before I think the book was a good introduction to the basic components of connecting SAP to the Web via the ITS. The code examples of how to use HTML together with ABAP also gave me a better understanding of the system. The book gives a good start to build on before digging into the actual technical work.
Not up to mark.......1999-05-29
This book is more theoretical than a pratical book, only IAC componects are disscussed not any other internet technologies. the only samples discussed in this book are those which come as SAMPLES with IACs
