Book Description

How does one accurately measure an alliance? With all the factors involved -- productivity, decision making, team performance, the number of new customers, and damage control -- getting a precise measurement can be a complex and daunting task. Knowing which measurement to use, and at what stage of the alliance life cycle, is critical.

Measuring the Value of Partnering gives readers a system for measuring a relationship's contribution at every stage of the alliance, from creation to implementation to termination. This essential book features case studies drawn from interviews with key players at companies like IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Starbucks, Staples, and Hyundai. Weaving these and other real-life examples together, Author Larraine Segil helps readers develop the appropriate metrics and then shows how and when to use them accurately and intelligently to achieve the greatest impact.

Timely and practical, Measuring the Value of Partnering provides the tools for making any alliance is work to maximum organizational advantage.

2 out of 5 stars Jargon, puffery and false pretenses.......2007-03-16

This book is not at all what its title and blurb suggest. It purports to help you to assess strategic alliances by using "metrics", which are defined as "that which should be measured" (at xi). Unfortunately, the author has a distinctly inadequate approach to this concept: she will tell you that you should use something as a "metric", but she does NOT tell you (i) how to measure it, or (ii) how to weight it against other "metrics" that are qualitatively different. If you are expecting the book to provide even a single template or checklist that will enable you to accumulate a bunch of metrics and compare them -- in fact, if you're expecting anything quantitative at all -- yours is a vain hope.

Moreover, the metrics she proposes are often quite vague. For example, she proposes "strategic alignment" and "strategy fit" as two separate metrics during the development of an alliance (at 43-49). The distinction between them is never made clear, although for the latter she includes a kind of flow diagram with 12 boxes filled with terminology like "Misson/Vison/Values", "SWOT", "Product Lines" etc., and other chestnuts from undergraduate business textbooks. Here are some other examples of metrics, verbatim (at 214): "Define expectations and success continually", "Educate the customer about [your company's] value," "Negotiation - change the conversation from how much to how good". Maybe these are good bits of advice in some contexts, but the use of the word "metric" for each of them is quite misleading.

The "case studies" that make up most of the book are no more illuminating about the nuts and bolts of implementing a measurement process. They consist mainly of the authors's big-company clients patting themselves on the back while describing the things that were important to them in various deals, without describing any process for scoring or comparing these factors.

The author does take great pains, however, to remind us that, e.g., she once did some research at Cal Tech, that her current firm (into which her old firm merged) is "considered the world experts in Negotiation and Relationship Management processes" (at 57), and that she wrote another book (which you are encouraged to buy and read). This constant huckstering is tiresome. So is the prose style. It's an endless permutation of empty business-speak like "leadership", hand-off," competency" and "critical", e.g., "leadership is critical at this stage" (as if it isn't at other stages?), or the non sequitur: "The operationalization metrics, a cumbersome term, relates [sic] to the multitude of activities that put flesh around the skeleton of the alliance. This is also the moment of alliance hand-off from those who developed and negotiated the alliance to those who must implement it [at 63]."

If you can tolerate soporific prose about alliances, you would be much better off reading Mark De Rond's "Strategic Alliances as Social Facts". In addition to critiquing the "life cycle" model of alliances on which Segil relies, it offers a great deal of substance -- including a convincing argument that the success or failure of alliances often is based on factors the parties didn't initially expect to measure.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone who is in a business relationship.......2004-01-07

Segil's expertise shines through in this book about the role metrics play in creating successful business relationships. Segil's use of real-world examples shows how the unpredictable, complicated realities of alliances can be overcome and managed by applying the right metrics. With her keen insights and first-hand experiences, readers finish the book armed with the tools and direction they need to use alliances to their advantage. A great book!

Download Description

Women and the Leadership Q reveals what many men have known all along: successful leaders come in all different shapes and sizes. The key isn't in gender, but learning how to leverage one's own style. To do this, women must accept, both intellectually and emotionally, their innate potential brilliance and blind spots of their own style.

Featuring Leadership Q-a 38-item, self-scoring, gender-neutral test, developed by Shoya Zichy and based upon the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator-women can identify which of the four profile groups best matches their personalities and then go on to explore which of the eight subsets, or specific leadership styles, applies to them. Bringing together a powerhouse team of leading Myers-Briggs test experts, Women and the Leadership Q includes exercises that help readers further refine their styles, build upon their strengths, and minimize their weaknesses. In addition, interviews and profiles of more than forty internationally well-known women illustrate the different groups and their leadership styles. Profiles include: Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Madeleine Albright, Elizabeth Dole, Gloria Steinem, and many others.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting But Wordy.......2005-06-17

The Seven Secrets are thought provoking, but the Brooks sisters take 274 pages to say what could have been said in 100 pages. Also, the chapters veer off topic and spend considerable time discussing unfair treatment of women in the workplace.

4 out of 5 stars A useful book for all working women.......2000-10-04

The first point that is interesting about this book is the acceptance of the differences between the attitudes of men and women regarding their obligations at home and at work. Realising how we have been brought up, in a way that makes networking, taking risks or finding mentors much easier for men, is an important step towards changing our own attitudes that stand on our way to achieving our goals. One more point of interest is that the book addresses women not only in the corporate sector, but its concepts can be easily applied to all areas of emloyment. The book is highly readable, with many examples and success stories. For those of us using vision aids, note that the book's lettering is well thought of, not large print but comfortable, which makes reading less complicated than the usual overcrowded format used in business books.

3 out of 5 stars Somehow useful but the tittle is misleading.......2006-02-17

I expected to read about several successful Business Models but instead the author presents us a methodology to evaluate if a business concept is successful or not.

The theoretical basis for Business Models is also missing, even the Business Model concept is missing.

I bought a book that was under my expectations. This is the risk of buying online, you don't have the chance to open the book and have a general idea about the contents.

5 out of 5 stars Practical road map for starting a consulting practice.......2004-03-26

I enjoyed reading this book. It provided a very practical approach to starting a consulting practice. I also enjoyed the insights from interviews with real life consultants and the very and the very up front realities of starting a consulting firm. I have recommended this book to a number of my colleagues interested in starting consulting firms.

Good job, Marc!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book by experienced consultant in this field.......2003-10-24

Don Debelak is one of my favorite authors. This book presents an easy way to evaluate business start ups. But unlike "Will It Fly" by McKnight, which I recently reviewed, this book provides a set of criteria that can be applied to nearly all businesses. The "Will It Fly" book was oriented primarily to venture capital funded start ups. So, if you are thinking of starting a home-based business all the way on up to a small steel mill, Don's criteria will give you a great first blush look at its feasibility.

Like McKnight's book the criteria are just a starting point, because Debelak tells you how to find compensating factors against any weakness in your business model.

Although McKnight goes into more depth (44 criteria), I will probably use Debelak's (18 criteria) as a first blush approach as they are easy to apply and remember, they apply for all types of businesses, and they leave out the messy details of how the company will be staffed -- which can be evaluated after these.

The author calls his model "GEL". "G" is for Great Customers, "E" is for Easy Sales, "L" is for Long Life.

Great Customers - Debelak breaks this up into 2 sub areas: Customer Characteristics and Customer Value to the Company. Customer Characteristics has 3 factors: the number of possible customers (High is better); ease of finding the customers (Easy is better); Spending Patterns of the Customer (Prolific is better). Likewise, customer Value to the Company is broken into 3 factors.

Easy Sales is broken into 2 parts, and in total they total 6 factors). Long Life (profitability and investments) is likewise broken into 2 parts having a total of 6 factors.

You rate each factor into: Excellent, Average, Poor. Then you want to have a certain number of Excellents... and no more than a certain ratio of Poor's for every so many Excellents.

He provides a nice form for you to use to fill all this in. He also provides many examples of how to rate different business types.

What I found most interesting was his discussion of why we should use his (or McKnight's) business model. He says that you should go through these criteria before you do your business plan. You need to re-calibrate your business each year -- because the degree of change is so great.

When you jump into a business plan, you often forget to look at the forest for the trees. Debelak points out that many dot.com's become dot.bombs because they focused on their plan (and selling it to VC's) and not on whether their business made basic sense.

Debelak's criteria make you stay focused on whether your business makes sense.

Once you go through Debelak's business model then he describes how you should then proceed doing your business plan. I like this approach very much. It allows you to re-configure your "business offer" (so to speak) before locking it in with a business plan. If your ease of finding new customers is Poor, then you can brainstorm ways to change that. After that, then you can proceed on your business plan with a modified version of your business, or a compensatory set of tasks to shore up that weakness.

The book is 260 pages. There are copious examples of different businesses being put through the business model and/or business plans. Sometimes this was a little repetitious. But, you'll find great nuggets of wisdom and further commentary on his model process in these examples.

Overall, this book SHOULD BE REQUIRED for anyone doing a business startup. I like it as well as McKnight's, and I recommend both.

Debelak often writes for Entrepreneur Magazine. His other books are excellent -- particularly on bringing new products to the market, and marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for a Modeling Career.......2007-10-03

My son is an aspiring model and actor. We attended a very informative class that featured Mr. Marcus. He covered a wealth of information on how to succeed as a professional model - things that it may have taken years for us to learn on our own. There was so much information that we felt that his book was a must. We refer to it often and recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource!.......2007-09-25

I would highly reccomend this book to anyone starting out in the commercial modeling industry. It is a must have as far as industry handbooks! I followed Aaron's advice and got all of my daughter's photo shoots and headshots done free of charge. This saved us a lot of money in building her portfolio and it also allowed her to gain experience as a model. As a result, the photographers have since used her for paying jobs and it helped pave the way for other commercial work. I would not have known how to go about this if it had not been for this book. Aaron was also extremely helpful in taking the time to answer all of my emails personally whenever I had further questions regarding how to create a resume, finding a good agent, model release forums, etc. We also had the opportunity to go to one of Aaron's seminars, which was fantastic! If you ever get the chance to go, I would highly reccomend it!! He has so much insight and knowledge about the industry.

Thanks for all of your help Aaron!

5 out of 5 stars If you are interested in commerical modeling, then this book is for you.......2007-08-01

I read this book hoping that it would give me some insight into the field that I was embarking on. I found the book to be an easy reader. I read it in 2 days because I am just getting my modeling career started. The book gives practical and realistic advice. Because the book was written by a model, the information to me seemed very relevant. The book is written as if Aaron is actually talking with you face to face. He is very real, direct, and straight to the point with his tactics to help you get started in the modeling industry. I knew I liked the author immediately when I saw how he used "thinking outside the box" tactics to get work.

As a result, of reading the books I have tried some of his methods; and it has worked. Currently, I am signed with three agencies because I followed the directions in the book. If that is not enough, I took the initiative to e-mail Aaron ( heck, I sent him my Comp Card);and he e-mailed me back and gave me some great constructive criticism. Even though, he was on his way to NY he still took the time to e-mail me back and he insisted that he would e-mail me with more in depth comments about my shots when he returned. Well, he returned and I got an e-mail from him. It really meant a lot to me because I was like holy smoke the author really cares about his readers. In addition, he has an informative website " how to model.com" that can be very helpful to new models.
This is a must for any new commercial model.

Thanks AAron,

Cheli

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Helpful Read.......2004-11-30

I was sooo glad I found this book. Before I read it I was struggling with my career and making lots of painful and expensive mistakes. You have to read the chapter on scams.

Now that I read it I feel like a smart actress in charge of her career. I have a real game plan and have implemented many of the things I learned from it. I am so grateful I found this book and now feel like I have a real shot at working more. I can't recommend this book enough.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but generally OK.......2003-01-28

This book has been updated since it's first writing, but still contains many many errors.
Hunter covers the material well, and provides a good overview of LA. In general, its a good read and a good attempt at practical, down the earth info for actors. In a world of only marginally helpful books, this one is better than most.
BUT don't use the specifics given (prices, phone numbers, names of people, etc) since many are outdated. My biggest concern was that the author often talks about things being "illegal" when they in fact, are not. They are simply not within UNION rules for the industry. Illegal and against union policy are not the same thing!
Most of my major issues fell within the section on child actors. The vast majority of this information was just plain incorrect. Although she references current topics such as the Coogan Law, the information she gives is misleading...again, applying California rules (the Coogan does not exist anywhere but in California) and union policies with fact. If you are a child actor or parent, beware of this section!
Also, the book often references a web site with resources you can purchase from her (one long commercial--yuck)and yet the web site is not up and running.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for actors and actresses moving to Los Angeles!.......1999-04-02

I picked this book up when it was hot off the press in February and found it to be an invaluable tool for any actor or actress planning on moving to Los Angeles. The book contains thousands of phone numbers for just about anything the working actor needs. It familiarizes you with the city, lets you know what to expect about the field, and encourages you to give it your best. There are chapters that explain all the major guilds and how to be admitted. The book takes you through a guided program on getting headshots, landing an agent, and fitting yourself into the Los Angeles acting market. One chapter is all about finding a night time survival job to pay the bills while you attend auditions during the day. Another chapter covers the audition process and most of the publications in the industry. The only problem with this book is the title. Modeling is mentioned sporadically throughout the book even though the title makes you think that modeling is covered as much as acting. If you are an aspiring model I do not recommend this book. I only recommend this book to anyone planning on pursuing an acting career in the Los Angeles area.
