Lasser Let Me down.......2007-08-26
Lasser is a known name in the consumer 'financial' publishing business. This book about retirement planning is very outdated and even misleading in some areas. The calculations it asks the reader to do are with pencil and paper. As my daughter used to say "A,DUUh!" There are a myriad of easy PC based tools in the market that are far superior. I would have returned the book the next day if I bought it at a local book store.
Financial Realism in Retirement.......2007-05-10
This is what happens when a highly qualified person writes a book to help others understand their retirement finances so that they can realistically plan and feel as comfortable as is possible with their present and future financial well-being.
It is based on realistic historical and mathematical facts. The planning methodology is as good as it gets. I can't say enough about how useful this book has been to me to say nothing of the confidence I now have in my personal finances. It's not enough to say that Mr. Hebeler is to be congratulated!
Good stuff.......2007-01-11
This book is different that others I have read and makes much more sense. Just wish I had it 30 years ago.
Thinking of retirement .......2006-06-28
JK Lasser's Your Winning Retirement Plan was very informative. If you are thinking of retirement you may want to read this book first. I found it helpful, and more than ever realize that I need to hire a Financial Advisor, because this is a big step. My money is going to have to get me through my golden years, hopefully for a long time.
Sage advice that will keep you on track.......2003-03-26
Hebeler's approach answered for me my most challenging questions: 1] Will my retirement assets allow me to spend what I need (want) to spend each year during my years in retirement? 2] Can I grow my assets at my desired rate while simultaneously lowering the risk of my portfolio? 3] How can I evaluate my financial health each year in a meaningful and action-oriented manner?
All your family members should read it. And if after reading Hebeler's book you still feel the need for professional financial planning, insist that he/she read it as well.

Steps to Success.......2007-05-17
An excellent book that gives the reader a fantastic insight into what makes Lou tick and how to succeed in both sport and life. Filled with humour it is easy to reaad and very informative.
Learn important people skills and leadership lessons while you have fun reading..........2006-06-01
I happened to notice this book one day when I took my daughter to the library. A friend of mine is a personal acquaintance of Lou's so I decided to see what 'Ol Lou is all about for myself.
This is a book of (mostly humorous) stories that makes it a fun, easy read. At the same time, each story has powerful success principles and truths embedded within.
If you want to see powerful leadership in action, this is a great book.
If you want to get more from your interactions and relationships with people in every area of your life, this is a great book.
If you find yourself doubting your abilities and potential, this is a great book.
If you want to be able to learn from someone who started out as a nobody with nothing and ended up as somebody who had something, this is a great book.
If you weren't fortunate enough to have a parent or adult-figure who taught you how to win at the game of life, then I heartily recommend this book to help fill in that void.
If you don't see yourself in the preceding statements, or, if you have read all the success books and you are looking for something brand-new that you have never heard of before, then this probably isn't the book for you.
Classic Lou.......2005-09-26
If you are looking for pure Lou Holtz motivation, you will not be disappointed. There are no "silver bullets" here, but the book will do a good job of reinforcing some great principles for creating a successful team or organization.
NOPE!.......2004-05-21
When you read the reviews here, you'd think this guy could walk on water, but this book is long on motivation and short on application. Now, if you want something that will blow the concepts and information in this book right out of the water and, at the same time, get rid of the "Big Daddy" syndrome which this book fosters too, read SUCCESS CYBERNETICS by Uell S. Andersen - a book that's never been out of print since it first appeared in 1966! SUCCESS CYBERNETICS is available from amazon.com too, go see the reviews and get it. Forget the "Raw Raw Raw, Sis Boom Bah" approach that this one contains.
Life & Leadership Tips from a Master Motivator.......2003-07-01
Lou Holtz, currently the head football coach at the University of South Carolina, has written one of the best, and most enjoyable leadership books I have ever read. His game plan for success was largely told through his gridiron experiences, but this plan is about much more than just football-it is a proven, common-sense guide for succeeding in the game of life.
What makes Holtz's life and leadership insights so compelling and believable are his dynamic life experiences and his incredible list of accomplishments: parents were divorced; fiance' broke off their engagement, but they later married and remain so after 40 years; only coach to lead 4 different programs to top-20 finishes and 6 different programs to bowl games (William and Mary, N.C. State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, South Carolina); 23 of 32 college teams he coached have received bowl bids, with 18 top-25 finishes, 8 top-10 finishes, and one undefeated national championship; 3rd winningest active coach and 7th place all-time with 243 victories; wife's heroic battle with throat cancer; fired or let go as assistant coach more than once; polled as the best motivational speaker in the country two years in a row, and his motivational video "Do Right!" is the all-time best-seller; guest speaker at most Fortune 500 companies; and was invited to the Oval Office by four different presidents.
Holtz's game plan consists of ten steps. Each step is explored in detail in its own chapter. The colorful, real-world stories and humorous anecdotes Holtz used to present the steps' lessons perfectly complemented his conversational writing style. The final chapter is considered the "end-zone" of success-where you can be if you have the courage, desire, and character to apply the lessons described within the plan's steps.
The book is jammed full of common-sense, spiritual, philosophical, and motivational life and leadership perspectives. The most memorable passages for me as a father, leader, and follower were Holtz's thoughts about discipline:
"For me, a disciplinarian is someone who requires that people understand the consequences of their decisions. You use discipline to reinforce choices. Our athletes and my children knew that if they chose to misbehave, they were also choosing to pay the consequences...In each case, I never punished anyone; the offenders chose the punishment themselves by their actions."
He illustrated his commitment to being a disciplinarian by describing the circumstances that led to him suspending his top three Arkansas players before the 1977 Orange Bowl (against Oklahoma), and to suspending two of his best players before his top-ranked Notre Dame team played the second-ranked University of Southern California in 1988:
"[They] recklessly violated our Do Right rule, which governs personal conduct...These were not bad guys; they simply made a bad decision...I didn't want the keys to our offense to miss our biggest game of the year, but when they decided to break our rules, they also decided to miss the game. Now I had to support that choice."
Holtz is a master motivator and a proven true winner in football and life. My highest recommendation for this book is best captured by Holtz himself when he wrote, "As you know, the only things that will change you from where you are today to where you want to be five years from now are the books you read and the people you meet." I hope I someday get a chance to meet Lou Holtz and thank him for his outstanding book on life and leadership.

Inspiring!.......2007-01-12
This book lights a fire under your butt! The author does a great job laying out the steps. Although the lack of skillful editing bothered me a bit in the beginning, it does deliver. But why all these good practices cannot be performed by the state itself, instead of the individuals??
Excellent plain english guide.......2007-07-17
After purchasing several retirement books, this book stands out for the no nonsense approach to retirement. The books also provides web links with up to date tools and calculators that make it even more practical. One especially great feature of this book is that regardless of your age, income, or current retirement knowledge, it provides a way for all to get in the game and get on track to retire. I highly recommend this book.
Precious book!!!!.......2007-06-29
At the end of the book, I logged into my 401K and immediately noticed that I was not diversified. With what I learned in the book, I was able to change my investment direction percentages with confidence and knowledge. This book to me is a vaulable tool.
Well Done Gail!.......2007-06-22
I had the pleasure of hearing you speak at the Mpls/S. Paul Investors Fair several years ago. I've been a fan of your column and have the newspsper clippings to show for it. Thank you for putting all of the down-to-earth knowledge in a well written and easy to understand book. I've used several of the calculators and realize I have to beef things up a bit although I'm not in as bad a shape as I had thought. This is truly a "must read" for anyone interested in getting a handle on their retirement planning. I know what I'm giving everyone for presents this year! Thanks Gail!

Nothing new.......2004-08-11
Very basic, beginning book to sales for compensation. Might be more appropriately entitled, "Sales comp for dummies". If you already know anything at all about sales comp, it's really not for you.
Worthless in the real world**(see edited section of review).......2004-01-01
I now understand why large corporations are confused. This book has many pages of verbiage with even more useless graphs. Perhaps corporate vice presidents who need to justify their existence can wave this book around and generate reams of computer reports to wade through while their corporate bosses walk down the halls, but as far as creating a practical working program forget it. I would like to have my money back.
********
******** Hold the presses!
This guy David J. Cichelli just gave me a call! I will say one thing for him. He is sincere and extremely intelligent. After a warm friendly conversation he helped me with my plans. So I don't want my money back after all! In fact I definitely will be looking for him to write some industry specific books in the future. I truly wish him well.
The perfect how-to for sales incentive program designers.......2003-12-21
Keep this book among your collection of professional books. It's a no-nonsense guide that goes directly to the heart of how you design incentive programs for sales people in different jobs. David Cichelli describes, in detail, the finite number of formula mechanics used to pay incentives. He also describes when to use the mechanics, the math behind each formula, and popular variations of each mechanic. If you're looking for a book on the psychology of incentive programs, this isn't it. It is, however, a primer on specific sales incentive program types. Every HR or Comp Analyst should be familiar with these concepts - if not for your career, then for the sake of the people working in sales and the company's bottom line.

Do you or someone you love have trouble saying "No" when the urge to spend strikes? Are you always living on the edge financially because your intention to save money is never as strong as your compulsion to spend it?

•communication exercises and dialogues to help spenders and their partners heal a relationship distressed by money conflicts.
In addition, Mellan provides real-life stories of individuals and couples facing and triumphing over harmful spending habits.

Look back to look forward........2006-07-13
Authors who write about debt and getting out of it, overspending and overcoming it, tend to fall into two categories: there is the P.E. coach who is going to whip you into shape, shout to you that you can do one more crunch, and perhaps throttle you if you screw up.
Then there are the understanding therapists who want to help you understand the source of your compulsion and assemble around you a small team of trusted advocates who will stick with you through your relapses and help you to get well.
Olivia Mellan is a therapist.
Her book declares that upfront, so I am hardly outing a softy with this observation. If you want somebody to threaten your feeble, self-loathing little overspending life with an early demise if you don't cut up that last credit card, this book is not for you. But if you want somebody who understands you or your overspending partner, Mellan's Overcoming Overspending may be the one. You may need to supplment it, however, with something a bit more stern.
Mellan herself is a `recovering overspender', 12-Step language that alerts you to the origin of her interest in this topic and the remedies she'll propose. Where others will begin with lurid descriptions of the living hell that absorbs the indebted masses--I do not intend to make light of this society-wide but deeply personal ill--Mellan's first chapter is entitled `What is Overspending All About?'
In my judgement, her strong suit is probing gently at the scarcity of soul that generates overspending as a futile attempt to fill the void.
Her second section is perhaps even more collegial: `How Spenders' Partners Can Help', followed by `Tools and Techniques You Both Can Use'. Pay attention to these section titles, since Mellan (or her editor) is what I call an `Honest Titler'. The names of her sections and chapters tell you exactly what to expect. Significantly, it is not until the book's fourth of five chapters that we read `How Overspenders Can Overcome', a remarkable postponement--though not an evasion--of the spender's responsibility.
This is a classic therapeutic approach and may well be what you and your partner need. The final section--`The Long and Winding Road'--suggests that you'll suffer relapses along the way but you'll get to your destination if you and your partner keep at it.
Given the sea of get-out-of-debt literature that is available, what ought we to make of Mellan's opportunity. I consider it a valuable tool for those who love an overspender, less so for the overspender himself or herself. Mellan is particularly good on what `hoarders' bring to the mix and how the overspender's partner is likely to change in order to compensate for the compulsion that comes here under review.
The overspender will benefit from reading Overcoming Overspending, but is likely to need some backbone from a supplementary work.
Wise advice from a compassionate expert.......2003-12-16
The reader who said the exercises in "Overcoming Overspending" are ridiculous does not want to examine his/her feelings about money. I have worked on many of the exercises and have found them enormously helpful with my own compulsive spending issues. Overspending is such a widespread problem now that a number of useful books have been written on the subject. Olivia Mellan's book shows gives readers the benefit of her years as a professional money counselor. Readers will find it well worth their time and thoughtful contemplation.
Excellent!.......2003-12-14
I can't say enough good things about this book. It has helped my husband and me enormously. But for the book to work, I think you have to truly want to change your spending habits as individuals and as a couple and commit to the exercises. Skimming it (as the reviewer below did, to his or her disappointment) and hoping for magic is not going to bring about change. Let me just give a couple of examples from our experience with the book .... For my wonderful husband (a classic overspender) and me (a chronic underspender aka penny pincher), money was the one thing we argued about. I dreaded Christmas because my husband would buy loads of expensive presents, certainly many more than I wanted--and we'd spend the months after paying off debts. He tended to make impulsive purchases and frequently ate out. Over time, with the help of this wise book, we learned to make changes and capitalize on our strengths as a couple. I took over financial matters, we set up a budget, we commited to savings, we considered purchases carefully and went into stores at Christmas with a list to avoid impulsive purchases. Most importantly we learned how our childhoods, especially the models of our own parents, contributed to our present money woes. Getting a handle on our money issues, helped us move forward in other areas of our lives: having a child and considering adopting another, buying a new car, investing, saving for a house. So the book does work--if you're willing to invest the effort to change!
I shouldn't even give this book one star.......2003-04-09
I am a compulsive book buyer. When I stop buying books I replace the books with some other obsession. I have bought most of the books that amazon offers on compulsive buying(trying to help myself through my compulsiveness).I have learned something in each one that I have read. This book "Overcoming Overspending" is the worst book on compulsive spending that I have read so far. I actually skipped the entire middle of the book(I did read the chapter headings and skimmed through). In the beginning of the book I had hope that the book was going to be real good but it started talking about doing these ridiculous exercises. I felt that these were things that were a total waste of time and absolutely were not helpful at all. I would like to know if anyone out there that has read this book actually followed the program. I have just started another book called "Consuming Passions" and already in the first few pages of the book I have learned more than I learned in the whole "Overcoming Overspending" book. I hope this helps someone, because now I have a book that I feel was a total waste of my time reading it and the money I spent on it. ...

Great high-level description of manufacturing's strategic capabilities.......2006-05-09
This book clearly indicates the pros and cons to different production systems and the situations in which a plant should choose one or the other, as well as the various roles that a plant could occupy in a larger manufacturing network. The author does a good job of showing the multiple sources of competitive advantage that manufacturing may provide to a company and highlights the need to place manufacturing in the strategic decision making process, beyond the simple-minded low cost manufacturing strategy. This book presents a clear, concise methodology for evaluating the manufacturing system, while remaining focused on the strategic needs of the company.

Outstanding book!.......2004-06-12
This is an amazing book - it clearly explains how you can plan for your retirement and help you to actually calculate the numbers yourself without depending on a planner. The book made me feel very empowered with my own finances. Thanks for writing this book - its awesome.
No Index.......2002-02-10
I found the book clearly written but was surprised to find no index.
get your share: the everyday woman's guide to stocks.......2002-02-05
I too am a hispanic woman. I was quite intimidated by stocks and expecially that scary stock page in the newspaper. I could not believe it. I am a college graduate and a bank employee and here I am completely baffled by investments. I work in a bank. But I caught the last 15 minutes of her PBS special and was captivated as to how simply she explained it without being condisending. I needed someone to explain how to take control of my own finances and all of those dummy books were not as helpful as I had hoped. I truly felt like a dummy!! I especially liked the road lane analogy. Because now I know in what lane and what speed to go. Even though I am 27 and the recommended/investing age starts at 25. I am confident that my retirement will be smoother than most of today's retirees. I thank you very much Julie, you improved my life by allowing me to understand it more clearly. Thanks again. If you are ever in Chicago, look me up. I owe you a cup of Starbucks mochaccino or something!!
BEST FINANCIAL PLANNING BOOK OUT THERE!.......2001-12-06
Wow! Julie Stav is really a financial writer for our times. She speaks in clear language and provides a special (and easy!) system for you to figure out how to plan for retirement, save for a college fund, or even just get the most out of your 401(k). My favorite part was the exercise she had us go through to find "hidden assets" that I didn't even know I had! I would recommend this to anyone who is numbers shy but who knows that it is time to take their financial future into their own hands!
