5 out of 5 stars Teaching Best Practice for All Students.......2007-06-09

I have seen Cris use the same teaching best practices for her college prep classes and classes with struggling readers. Their academic acheivement from these supportive structures greatly improves and the kids read! From her book and visiting her classrooms, I saw her approach best practice for struggling students as best practices for all students and it works! The text is written in a way that us non-english teachers can pick it up and easily incorporate comprehension strategies into our classrooms too. I highly recommend any Tovani text.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and informative--lots of good ideas for struggling middle and high school readers.......2007-04-09

In this book, Chris Tovani invites you into one of her high school reading workshop classes. This reading workshop class is filled with students who are fluent readers, but who are also unable to comprehend what they read. Also, they have not elected to take the course, resulting in a room full of bored expressions and bad attitudes. The book begins at day one, and as you begin to read, you start to really feel sorry for Tovani, wondering how she is ever going to reach these reluctant students and turn them into better readers. But as she takes you through the class, and you read about each of her strategies, she makes it seem almost effortless. Tovani is able to connect with her students, and it is clear that they quickly gain her respect. You also learn that she herself was a "fake reader" until her 30s! I believe that this is a major reason why she is able to teach her students so successfully; she knows exactly what they are going through, and as a result, she is able to show them what really works. Tovani, a nationally-known reading consultant, continues to teach English and reading at the high school level because of this dedication to helping students.

Comprehending what we read really is something that most of us take for granted, and it's a skill that is very difficult to teach. Oftentimes, students who struggle with comprehension will simply read the words on a page and expect the meaning to arrive automatically. Tovani also acknowledges that some students want to make their teachers responsible for their thinking. When they are confused, they think that it is the teacher's job to fix it. Tovani tells us that many times, students don't realize that they actually have the tools to change their reading habits themselves. The trick is to make them think about their reading, and in this book, she provides a variety of ways to do so.

This book is divided up into three major sections. In the first part of the book, Tovani talks about "fake" readers, and she discusses some of the strategies they use to fool their teachers and pass their classes. This was eye-opening, to say the least! Tovani herself admits that for book reports, she used to select a very obscure book in the library, copy down what was in the inside flap of the cover, and then hide the book elsewhere in the library so her teacher would never find it! In the second part of the book (essentially the meat of the book), Tovani introduces various reading comprehension strategies, and she lets you take a look at how they work on real students in her reading workshop class. Some of these strategies include: setting a purpose for reading, knowing when you're stuck (and what to do when you are), making connections with unfamiliar subject matter, asking questions of the text, and making inferences. As you read the book, you get a glimpse of how students at first struggle with each of Tovani's lessons, then find success. The last section of the book contains actual tools (worksheets, diaries, etc.) you can provide to your students to aid them in their reading assignments.

I would highly recommend this book to any middle or high school teacher in any subject area. It appears that too many of our students are struggling with comprehension, and it is imperative that we do all we can to make them better readers. Unfortunately, most teachers do not have the extra time it takes to teach students how to read well, and a vast amount of material must be covered in middle and high school. Yet, reading is a lifelong activity, and we must give students the tools they need to become better readers, and we need to make them responsible for their own learning. This book shows you how. It was a very quick and easy read, and even if you walk away with one new idea for your classroom, it will be well worth it--for your students and for yourselves.

4 out of 5 stars A reading comprehension book with lots of good thoughts for parents and teachers!.......2007-03-13

I liked this book for its content, but I didn't like it for its outline and structure. I found it to be wordy and a bit too conversational. I particularly enjoyed the real life examples of how kids failed at comprehending what they read, and the solutions the author provided to help the kids overcome their problems. I got the following seven messages from this book:

>>Preview What You Read Before You Read It
>>Have a Purpose for Reading Before You Read
>>Concentrate and Focus While You Read (Don't Fake Read)
>>Think While You Read So You Gain Understanding
>>Relate What You Read to What You Already Know
>>Diagram What You Read (Preferably in Writing)
>>Outline What You Read (Preferably in Writing)

I would have liked the book better if there had been seven chapters in the book with the above titles. Unfortunately the chapter titles in this book did not really help me outline the book in my head. And I think that is a major flaw. As a result, this book took me longer to read than it should have. But I'm glad I took an extra hour to read it.

If you have students and/or children you are training how to read intelligently so they can read quickly and comprehend what they are reading, then I highly recommend you read this book along with How to Read a Book authored by Mortimer J. Adler (ISBN: 0671212095). By reading these two books you will get two different wonderful perspectives on the same topic and be well on your way to becoming an expert on reading comprehension. 4 stars!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for those who teach Reading.......2006-06-18

I have been doing alot of professional reading on strategies to help my students comprehend what they read. I teach reluctant readers and this is one of the best I've read for middle school comprehension. This puts a new spin on strategies I've already been doing. This book plus Strategic Reading-Guiding Students to Lifelong Literacy 6-12 by Jeffrey Wilhelm are my strategic plans for learning-centered teaching: I do You watch, I do You help, You do I help and You do I watch. Powerful research!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Improving Reading: Strategies And Resources (Paperback).......2006-03-16

This book was highly recommended by my graduate professor a few years ago, and it has become my most used reference. I wouldn't be without it. Johns and Lenski have compiled a comprehensive collection of interventions specific to each need. The layout is clean and easy to reference quickly for busy teachers. The strategies are based on sound research and experience. As a reading specialist, its a requirement, but every elementary teacher would benefit from its wealth of information.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Johns' Improving Reading Book Review.......2005-09-12

This book is full of helpful ideas to help the most challenged readers and the most advanced readers. The book has hundreds of pages of ideas and graphic organizers to help busy teachers find the appropriate tool to help their students find success and excel in reading in and out of the classroom.

Very practical for teachers but at the same time is research-based.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and so practical!.......2005-09-10

The book was given to me by my principal and after reading the first chapter I gave it back so I could buy my own. This is a book every elementary teacher should own and refer to on a regular basis. It has enough theory to it to support its findings without slowing down the reading. Most of the book has practical suggestions and methods to use in the classroom. I have been so motivated by this book that I have completely changed the way I am teaching reading in my 4th grade classroom.

5 out of 5 stars LIFESAVER!.......2005-08-01

This book was a lifesaver for me, when I was thrown in with a class of middle-school students who had very poor reading skills. I used a number of the techniques described in the book, with good results: paired reading for very low readers (which I also encouraged their parents to do with them); Fluency Development Lesson for the whole class (reading poetry aloud, both whole class and in pairs); and much more. This book promotes oral reading, which I think is imperative in boosting reading skills (in contrast to my college professors, who said "never require students to read out loud"), and also gives a good, concise background on how and why oral reading fell out of favor. This book is easy to read, and gets across a lot of information in as painless a way as possible. Each chapter describes a particular technique, and then has a "(that technique) at a glance" box at the end that summarizes the information. I had looked at all the books on fluency I could find, and selected this as the best, and I recommend it without reservation. I used Jack Prelutsky's "Something Big Has Been Here" book of poetry for the Fluency Development Lesson, and it was awesome. Clever, humorous poetry that appeal to kids, but contain very sophisticated vocabulary, which became the basis of our vocabulary study.
The other two books that were part of my "reading instruction triumvirate": "Teaching Phonics and Word Study in the Intermediate Grades" by Wiley Blevins, and "Building Reading Comprehension Habits in Grades 6-12: a Toolkit of Activities" by Jeff Zwiers. Both indispensable.

3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-05-20

I only used this book for several weeks before I tested out of the class. What little I saw, it was a good book.

2 out of 5 stars Not very instructive.......2004-09-16

All the sample essays are great. But their structures, I think, are elusive. The essayists are too professional to choose a college-style method of writing and I had a very difficult time figuring out the elements of those essays. They scatter randomly in the articles and contradict what Alfred Rosa and Paul Eschholz teach us.

Read it through and you'll be overwhelmed with lots of flowery prose. It is a valuable reference resource, but not a GUIDE.

4 out of 5 stars solid basic writing text.......2001-11-02

I use this book to teach a beginning writing class. The variety of essays is quite good; not every one is a winner, but probably 60% are accessible and there are some rarities here that the students have thoroughly enjoyed, including "Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner and "A Crime of Compassion" by Barbara Huttmann. There are enough writers the likes of Dillard, MLK, Ackerman, and Orwell to acquaint novices with great writing, balanced with a good variety of more pop-oriented magazine style pieces. The strategies and guidelines for essays are excellent, and a wealth of possible topics for further development is offered throughout. My class prep time is easy and concise thanks to the book's structure and execution.

Book Description

Now in its eighth edition, the authors of Strategies for Successful Writing: a Rhetoric, Research Guide, Reader, and Handbook have strived to achieve the same steadfast goals that have motivated them from the beginning: create a rhetorically-organized writing guide that combines four books into one convenient and flexible teaching tool while offering students an exceptional value. By having at their disposal a comprehensive textbook that offers ample material for a full-year composition course, instructors teaching a one-term course can make various selections from Chapters 1-17, from whatever types of specialized writing suits the needs of their students, and from the appropriate essays in the reader. As well, because the authors believe strongly that an effective composition textbook should address students directly, they've aimed for a conversational yet clear style that invites students into the book, lessens their apprehensions about writing, and provides a model for their own prose. This style complements the authors' strong student-based approach to writing, and together they help create a text that genuinely meets student needs.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive foundation for teachers.......2007-07-06

I own many books on the subjects of teaching elementary reading and writing. What I like about this book is that it does not waste time on well known theories, but instead presents practical lesson planning for guiding young readers. The lessons are easily modified for grades 2-5 and the order of the lessons presented makes perfect sense - including separate and distinct approaches to teaching reading of fiction and non-fictin texts.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for teachers needing comprehension strategy lessons!.......2006-02-27

This book helps teachers find lessons already laid out for instruction to focus on specific comprehension strategies their students may need. Good examples and additional resources are included.

5 out of 5 stars The author has certainly contributed a masterpiece to the world of reading!.......2005-09-15

This book, printed in large format, is originally intended as a comprehensive instructional guide for teachers & reading instructors, to teach students (in grades 9 to12) how to extract & comprehend information from simple passages as well as complex or advanced reading materials.

I did not peruse this book in its entirety as my primary interest is only to find out, learn more about, & then master the seven reading strategies, since I have a passion for reading. Also, I am always looking out for new ways to enhance my own reading pursuits.

In a nut shell, with the execution of the seven strategies, it is designed to help teachers to become strategic teachers & students to become strategic readers. To put in simple terms, a strategic teacher/reader employs a repertoire of effective strategies in his/her respective pursuits. The seven strategies have their deep roots in scientifically based research.

In reality, I have read & reviewed only the first three chapters, as follows:

Chapter 1: The Power of Strategy Reading Instruction;
Chapter 2: Becoming a Strategic Teacher;
Chapter 3: Understanding the Seven Strategies;

& have a quick scan of the remaining chapters, particularly those pages with instructional templates, instructional activities & reproducible forms.

So, essentially, chapter 3 is my prime target, which outlines at great length & in depth, the critical attributes of the seven strategies, as follows: (Chapter 3 is actually a crash course for me!)

Strategy #1: Activating prior knowledge;
Strategy #2: Inferring - reading the lines, between the lines & beyond the lines;
Strategy #3: Monitoring-Clarifying - probing the text, thinking & reflecting;
Strategy #4: Questioning the author, peers & teachers through self-questioning & formulating questions;
Strategy #5: Searching sources - Selecting responses;
Strategy #6: Summarising the reading;
Strategy #7: Visualising-Organising - constructing mental images &/or graphics organisers;

These are the real gems of this book & I have benefited tremendously as a strategic reader as well as a strategic reading coach. I have in fact adapted many of the cognitive strategies in my coaching of kids/teens/adults in the areas of mastering information as well as effective study skills.

For the teacher (or parent who yearns to be a learning facilitator at home), & in the light of my own personal & professional experiences, I dare to say this book is a very pragmatic instructional guide. I seldom see a book so packed with instructional aids. Chapter 5 shows you how to organize for strategic reading instruction in your classroom. The last chapter lays out a school-wide implementation model. The references at the back of the book are a goldmine of information.

The author, with an impeccable track record (teacher, librarian, principal, superintendent, author of 35 books for parents & educators, consultant) has certainly contributed a masterpiece to the world of reading!
