2 out of 5 stars Superficial at best..........2007-08-08

I just finished reading this book and after reading more than a dozen of books on forex and day trading I must say the book is a waste of money. Most of the topics in the book are covered superficially and the few trading strategies presented are poorly documented and contain errors.

2 out of 5 stars Not so useful!.......2007-07-15

In my search for good FX trading books, I found no good book yet, and this book is no exception. This book is poorly written, has no consistent flow, and it does not lead the reader anywhere. Just few areas I found somewhat interesting like correlation between pairs, and volatility as a function of time of the day, and that is why I gave it a rating of 2. Otherwise, 1 will be enough. Someday someone may write a good FX trading book that really respects the intelligence of the reader. Not all FX retail traders are losers!

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource for all active forex traders - highly recommended!.......2007-06-04

Kathy Lien has written one of the most important "must have" books for active forex traders with "Day Trading the Currency Market".

Packed with practical insights and solid trading setups, she's written a superb book that's packed with useful trading how-tos, from one of the most respected forex authorities found.

Specifically, I found her correlation tables and volatility indices very valuable, as well as her step by step explanations of how to look for both fundamental as well as technical market-moving patterns. I'm recommending her book to all my Forex traders on my forexonfire dot com site, as excellent resources to own.

Additonally, she's provided superb explanations of how the mechanics of currency trading works, and the impact of various market opens, when and how to trade various technical chart patterns, and much more.

This book, along with Boris Schlossberg's excellent "Technical Analysis of the Currency Market", are the two best forex books on the market and are highly recommended.

great book i used it always when i first entered forex, and still do. lots of knowledge and wisdow. not to mention it teachs you some stratagies.lots of books say they show you stratagies, but few deliver. this is one of them that does. this book was recommended to me as intermediate but i think it is a must have beginners guide, worth 4 of my beginners guide books.

5 out of 5 stars Close to Ideal, Casi Perfecto.......2007-01-18

A lot a very important information for beginers and medium traders.
It is very complete from the fundamental view, has a couple a trading thechniques that I guess that works in real trading.
Overall great book!.More than I expected!
To be perfect She must write down more techniques to trade.
Is not nice the advertisement that she perform a long the book, due to the fact that the "Real & Good" information that she mention is not free in fxcm.
Finally read this book definitelly made me a better trader!!!.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical book for marketing / sales leaders, .......2004-10-14

John Coe's New Sales Coverage Model explains a holistic approach to marketing, which aligns marketing and sales together.

If you're like most readers you will be tempted to skip over the fundamentals that John Coe lays out such as database design, planning, and micro-segmentation.

The thing about marketing is that many marketers enjoy the creative process but few have the discipline for execution. Coe's book lays out an effective strategy, which requires teamwork and a shared vision involving all players.

This practical book lays out step-by-step what you need to do to sell more and spend less. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time!.......2004-08-14

This book is a wake-up call for marketing and sales organizations. The old ways of going-to-market are no longer effective in today's business environment.

John Coe clearly understands the new sales paradigm and what it takes to be successful. He shows readers what it takes to:
- Break through the marketing clutter and get noticed.
- Obtain high quality leads and convert them to sales.
- Create and execute an effective campaign.

From the very first page of this book, I was hooked - and I'm a pretty discriminating reader. As someone who specializes in new product launches, I'm pretty cynical about most books since they just keep regurgitating old, time-worn strategies and tactics.

This book is different. Well worth the investment.

Coe has a fresh look at how we must do business today. This book is written in a conversational tone with great examples. It's the perfect refresher for a seasoned sales consultant and it outlines the basic principals for entry-level sellers.

This book is a must as a resource and reference!

5 out of 5 stars Getting Sales & Marketing to work together!.......2004-01-25

Coe bridges the gap between marketing and sales productivity by connecting the dots with new and irrefutable proof that the basics work if you follow the formula. This is a must read for marketing, marketing communications and sales management in the same company so everyone is on the same page. If you're not making your numbers, read this and you'll find out what you're doing wrong.

5 out of 5 stars No Clue Train BS Here.......2003-12-30

My colleague John Coe has written a new book, "The Fundamentals of Business-to-Business Sales and Marketing," published by McGraw-Hill.

It is not a "high concept" or "big idea" book; therefore, fans of The ClueTrain Manifesto and other such highfalutin nonsense may find John's book way too practical - filled with stuff you can actually do today to increase your sales tomorrow.

But if you like, as I do, business books that are heavy on the nuts-and-bolts, telling you what to do to increase sales results - and how to do it cost-effectively - than buy John's book today.

3 out of 5 stars Emperor's New Clothes.......2007-07-26

I'm not sure why this book has gotten stellar reviews. Maybe folks who read it are insecure about giving a tough review to a book that's trying to teach them something. Regardless, this book is mediocre. The information in it borders four-star-worthy, but the writing is dry, the page layout is reminiscent of a bad magazine design, and it's just not apparent that the research is that good. For my money, I'll stick to the books out of Harvard, as opposed to those out of Harvard's MBAs.

2 out of 5 stars A cookbook for Angel Investors.......2007-05-18

My recent experience with angel investors is that they come in all flavors - from the sophisticated networks of dedicated portfolio managers to the impetuously interested or personal friend. Winning Angels provides a framework on which we can understand risk avoidance strategies, but doesn't go far enough to help most understand the characteristics of great opportunities or more importantly, the appropriate behavior of effective angel investors. I'm hoping there is a next book that enables true angel investors (not just family and friends) to participate as investors should. Angels are a critical part of the start-up ecosystem. Anything that can help make this process more efficient will certainly be welcome. Winning Angels falls short.

The saying goes, "A fool and his money are soon parted." Before you part with yours, check this primer on angel investing to ensure you know what you are doing, have asked all the right questions, and understand what angels expect from the process and their investments.

While the book is a bit dated and case studies are skewed to U.K. sources, every word of it is relevant to today's angel investor in need of a quick but thorough education.

4 out of 5 stars Read before swimming with sharks.......2003-07-05

The relationship between Angel, VC and Entrepreneur has been a source of popular confusion. This book clears up some key misunderstandings, such as the different roles Angels and VC's play in the financing process of startup companies. 'Winning Angels' contains a reasonable quantitative element outlining different valuation methods and deal structures, which should be accessible to any reader with a basic understanding of Corporate Finance or Discounted Cash Flow analysis. It's also made particularly credible by the inclusion of interviews with successful Angels. I was struck by the high bar set by the interviewees, and their generally shared opinion that the calibre of entrepreneur was a factor subordinate to all others. Because it's written from an Angel's perspective, the book is skewed towards investor interests. These fall out of alignment with the entrepreneur in at least one key respect: investors are motivated to maximise the return on their portfolio of investments, rather than any individual company's. It follows that Angels will have a tendency to pursue a number of high risk, high payoff vectors rather than companies with a high probability of success but less financial upside. This isn't a criticism of the book, just an observation of differing interests. In short: high quality advice for people on both sides of the table.

5 out of 5 stars Options workbook for Dummies.......2007-09-25

I picked up this book in preparation for an interview I was having in the equity structured products desk at Morgan Stanley. Although I had taken a Financial Derivatives class at Wharton, this book helped explain the basics. It goes through all of the fundamental and basic strategies, as well as spreads. The value in the book is in doing the examples and working out the max gains, loses, break-evens etc. It seems basic but as you begin to put together more complex trades these exercises stay with you and guide your understanding. The book also does a decent job of explaining the Greeks and volatility. You won't come away ready to put on any overly complex trades, but you might be comfortable putting on your first call back spread knowing what your risk and reward profile is.

5 out of 5 stars I was confused about options until I read this book.......2007-07-16

I am an amateur stocks and options trader. I have read, and continue to read, many books about the markets, about stocks, and about options. Options are more interesting to me than any other investing medium because of the ability to make quick gains and because of the innate limitation of losses. With so many options plays in existence, it's easy to get confused.

I picked up The Options Workbook and it cleared away much of the mystery of options investing. This book outlines the most common options plays including spread concepts, butterflies, condors, and many other trading techniques. It contains a primer that teaches about the Greeks, and about how to read the fundamentals on potential investments.

I didn't find a lot about chart reading technique n this book, but you can get that from other excellent books. Part of this book's strength is found in its quick charts that show, at a glance, exactly how to execute most options strategies for upward and downward moving markets. Since I have read this book, I have traded nothing but options and have grown my portfolio steadily. I'm no longer interested in buying stocks; they are simply too expensive and slow moving.

Hope this helps.

- Craig Nybo, co-author of Total Human: The Complete Strength Training System

5 out of 5 stars Excellent learning book for technical option learning.......2006-07-09

This books explains most option constructions and how to calculate there potential profit. If you need to train yourself in spreads concepts, this training manual is for you. First the spread is explained and then some calculation examples are given. Don't expect a when to use these spreads manual. It's not there. This is a excellent book for training yourself in setting up all kind of option structures and know what the costs are and profits. Also all the Greeks are explained in detail, and the first manual that makes it understandable for me :-)

1 out of 5 stars Skeptical.......2006-03-03

I am skeptical over the reviews of this book. I bought it but returned the book to Borders after a surprise check on Amazon.com on the reviews by so-called "readers" here. If you look at the review dates, all were dated around May-June 2002. If you're not convinced, click on each reviewer and most of them actually did only review (5 stars) for this book. Who knows, it could be a marketing tactics? I went over to check Barnes & Noble and it was exactly the same.. reviews were all done from May-June 2002 then full-stop. So I'm not saying anything, I did buy the book for 2 days, but I was not impressed. No thanks.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Simple Review.......2006-02-19

Good book for the basics of understanding the mechanics of options but not a lot of use for actual trading. It really is light on useful fundamental concepts you should use to trade - maybe that's what you get in the additional products they have for sale.

I was looking for a basic book teaching the concepts and trading practices and fundamentals. This book has a lot to say about none of the topics needed to help someone become a trader. If you are looking to have someone trade your account you might be helped by it. There are a lot better books out there "Getting Started in Currency Trading" is a fine example. Well when i grow up i to be Russell R Wasendorf, whether sr. or jr. I think these two are the greatest salesmen around. I bought a wonderful book which adorns my bookcase and adds colour and life to my room. Whats more is that i found the same book in my brother's home. Thinking he 'borrowed' it I asked him, He replied saying he 'invested' in it and it works well as a sleep aide . Seriously some points for beginners are reasonably covered but most of the book was a waste of time, paper and resources. There were no Fine points covered in the book to memory but if there were it was lost in the dribble.

... I have no idea what objective these guys had in mind when they sat down to write this book.... This book is just a bunch of information thrown together (probably downloaded from the internet) and they obviously took no time to put any real effort into this book. I was terribly dissappointed with my purchase of this book.....look elsewhere if you are interested in getting started in forex trading.

    Book Description

High Tech-based markets move so fast that getting things right becomes infinitely more important than it used to be. Category winners increasingly take it all (market share, revenues, profits, growth, market valuation) while others fight for whatever is left. The good news is that there are 9 really simple rules that companies can follow to help them be successful in tough times. These rules have been used by companies such as Google, Apple, Symantec, Salesforce.com, Netflix, Intel, Dell, Texas Instruments, and Microsoft. This book shows how these winners have applied these rules strategically to gain competitive advantage. It also shows practical tools that the entrepreneur and the product and corporate managers can use to implement the rules. These 9 Rules apply to small and large companies; product, service, web, and innovation-based companies; consumer and enterprise-oriented companies. They apply at the beginning, middle, and end of the product lifecycle.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent blueprint for technology entrepreneurs.......2006-10-05

Finally, a "Good to Great" book for the technology sector. High time. It's been a long time since we "crossed the chasm" and that chasm has gotten vastly wider and deeper. "Winners Take All" provides a proven framework and "just-in-time" knowledge entrepreneurs can start applying immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Silicon Valley high tech marketing that actually works.......2006-10-04

What a great book! The clear concepts and current examples rooted in the streets of Silicon Valley make this book instantly usable by entrepreneurs, CEOs and marketing managers. I'm sure it will go on to become a classic for practitioners/entrepreneurs and required reading in high tech courses everywhere.

This book is in the class of great marketing strategy books by Al Ries and Jack Trout. I say this because like Ries and Trout, Tony has the intense practical experience as CEO of a startup and the courage of conviction to distill his knowledge/experience into clear, easy to understand, and easy to implement methods, concepts, and frameworks. Tony forces you to focus on only a few concepts and skip the remaining because he differentiates between what works and what does not. He gives you answers that solve problems today to get success in the market.

Tony shows that the competition is maddeningly intense and the winner takes all while losers hardly survive.

The book takes you on a marketing strategy tour of many current success stories including Google, Craigslist, Symantec, Netflix, Salesforce.com, and Apple. You learn which rules played significant role in each success and how you too can apply the rules for your own company's success.

Tony has distilled 9 fundamental rules of high tech strategy that can help you navigate the treacherous waters of high-tech marketing, made all the more difficult by Geoffrey Moore's terms "Crossing the Chasm", tornado, gorilla, chimps, etc.

These 9 rules bring the essence of marketing in general and high tech marketing in particular within the easy grasp of a marketing-novice CEO or entrepreneur and enable them to apply them to their own specific situation and move towards success. The experienced practitioners will also find the rules guide in deciding what to focus on and what to pay attention to within the seemingly chaotic high-tech marketing scene.

The rules are simple, easy-to-understand, and almost intuitive. Once you buy into a rule and understand the easy examples, implementing a rule in your own specific situation should be simple (though not necessarily easy).

The 9 rules will appear as simple and common sense to many experienced practitioners (remember the saying, "The right answer when found will be simple").

    * These rules, illustrated with current examples, are very powerful and contain within them the essence of high tech marketing strategy

MBA students can use Tony's book as supplementary text for their general marketing course to understand "what works" in high-tech marketing as against Philip Kotler's most popular text detailing all the options and approaches available in marketing, only some of which work.

I personally know Tony and have worked with him. I attended Tony's course "Strategic Marketing of High Technology Products and Innovations" at Stanford University and like many other entrepreneurs I respect him for his experience and wisdom in marketing strategy.

I have lived in Silicon Valley as entrepreneur during the post-2000 period and I can relate with what Tony says. If you work in high-tech industry (or any industry for that matter) or if you are interested in starting your own company, this book is certainly worth your time. Read it. Study it.

I am personally recommending this book to all my friends and clients in high-tech as well as non high-tech companies because these rules will work both in hyper-competitive fast-moving world of high-tech and in all other kinds of industries.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2006-10-18

I am lucky enough to have Mr. Crerend as one of my closest friends both inside and outside of the workplace. His book is a good one, especially for the new investor who is looking for advice and guidance from someone with years of experience in the field. Mr. Crerend has a unique point of view that makes his book a great one, and also made him successful.

4 out of 5 stars Good primer and useful reference.......2003-02-15

Even though this book is 3 years old, it still serves as a very good primer to the hedge fund industry. Anyone wishing to gain a fundamental understanding of how hedge funds work and how they can be used will find the book easy to read. A lot of details are covered; e.g., a discussion about hedge fund indexes. Even for a professional like myself, I find the book to be a good reference every time I forget a concept or two.

    1 out of 5 stars Extremely General.......2002-01-01

Little information other than extremely general data on historic returns. One of the few investment books I have ever read that I did not find something useful to remember.

    2 out of 5 stars Tevfik Aksoy.......1999-11-22

Not bad for a someone on the street, however, it has very limited use for a professional. Contains a lot of repeats (and I mean a lot of). Would not recommend if a professional insight to hedge funds is being searched for. The book would be useful for those who are completely hedge fund illiterate or just curious what a hedge fund is.

3 out of 5 stars Facts, but somewhat outdated.......1999-07-16

Contains same facts as other hedge fund books, but seems to be outdated. Little info on recent trends in industry.

Business Basics Bestseller 1: The Easy, Interesting, Open-book Look at the Game of Business Numbers! 2nd Edition

If you never had this F&A stuff explained to you before, you will like "Business Basics Bestseller 1" as a starting point.

It will introduce you to the basics of business including the jargon behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting text." Search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this text, just that you check it out as well. It will be one of your best investments.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2001-07-13

One of the best F&A books written for general managers I have read. Detailed enough to give the reader an excellent grasp of the subject, but doesn't require calculus to understand. If you're a manager who cringes during discussions of cash flow, cost of capital, and discount rates, this book is for you. Can't wait for other titles in the series!

    Book Description

Fundamental Issues in Strategy is the product of a conference jointly sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Strategic Management Society in November 1990. This conference brought together important and influential thinkers in the field of strategy, as well as scholars from the fields of economics, organizational sociology, and political science, to address the following fundamental questions: How do firms behave? Why do firms differ? What are the functions of the headquarters unit in a multibusiness firm? What determines the international success or failure of firms? The book includes contributions from Alfred Chandler, Michael Porter, Oliver Williamson, and C.K. Prahalad. It represents a coherent statement of the status and future of the field of strategic management, re-examining the theoretical roots of strategic issues in order to set a new research agenda and advance the state of the field. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843433, $45.00.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Researchers' Reference.......2003-08-28

The thesis of the book is that research in strategy needs to be directed at fundamental questions, like "Why are firms different (despite attempts to imitate one another)?" The writers don't even bother to discuss the popular sillyness of advising firms to be "quick" or "invest in IT" and so on. Rather, there is a real attempt to describe what is known and not known about fundamental issues, like imitability.

The book's strength is the quality of the 22 authors involved. It is the strongest showing of intellectual talent on this subject ever assembled. The weakness is that it was written just before the rise of "competence-based" views of strategy, so that it offers little perspective on that literature.

Twelve years after the papers in this book were written, it remains an essential reference to research in strategy. MBAs and business people looking for the newest guru ideas should stay away---there are plenty of guru books out there to satisfy their needs for cool hip ideas ("seek chaos!").

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental Issues in Strategy: A Research Agenda.......2002-04-02

This book is not recomended for undergraduate, you must thinking hardly to understand the "soul" of this book. Read it carefully, once you read it, you will understand why the titled is
"Research Agenda", but anyway, this is usefull book for a reference in research or comprehensive analysis in area of strategy.

    5 out of 5 stars Things we don't understand.......2001-05-25

This book resulted from a conference held in Napa valley a few years before the book's publication. The editors and contributors examine critical issues in strategic management. Ten years later, these issues remain unresolved. This is because these issues are complex and enduring. Anyone interested in understanding enduring competitive advantage will benefit greatly by reading this book. One of its major contributions is that it delineates the boundaries of current understanding. To those looking for immediate help to their organizational problems this volume will offer few solutions. For those wanting to understand how firms behave, adapt, and organize for sustainable advantage this book will be a great start.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Reader.......1999-07-09

This book isn't worth the paper it's written on. It's a lengthy reader with tons of references and little creative thinking or new inspiring ideas. The content is rather basic and doesn't go beyond summarizing history and restating what's written in other books. What we need is not someone who can repeat what was written by others in another 600 pages - we need new thoughts and ideas. Don't make the same mistake I made in wasting money and time on this book!
