Book Description

This classic text takes an applied and computer-oriented approach to its topical coverage. The book is intended for one or two semester courses in biostatistics at the undergraduate or graduate level offered by departments of biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, nursing and other allied health disciplines, and is also used in some departments of forestry and animal husbandry. Nearly all the examples and exercises make use of real data from actual research projects and reports from health sciences literature. Where appropriate, Minitab, SPSS and SAS commands and printouts are included as part of the examples and solutions to exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but technical.......2006-11-10

This book is extreamly helpful for academic research. It can be somewhat more technical than most people would need.

3 out of 5 stars Not as impressive as I first thought.......2005-09-23

Daniel obviously knows his statistics; but, I wouldnt think that is too helpful for individuals reading or studying from his textbook.
The reasons are numerous, and all these reasons would reduce anyone's chances of solely using this book, or even using it at all.
The textbook is well organized, however Daniel's writing often is pedantic, repetitive (not in the helpful way) and ambiguous at best.
The examples and solutions occassionaly have serious errors in them which affect the overall outcome of the test (A second consideration is that the book is in it's 8th edition!!! therefore such errors are unacceptable for a person such as myself).
An example can be found on page 239 (example 7.3.2). The pooled variance, as calculated by Daniel is approximately off by 100 simply because he didnt give attention to dividing the numerator with the proper pooled D.F of the samples. The chapter ironically was on hypothesis tests, something extremely important to any line of empirically oriented statistics.

In Chapter 8; which is probably the most important chapter in Bistatistics (ANOVAs) he does not mention the relationship between MSW and sample SD. Also, his usage of Summation in formulas often are unnecessarily overcomplicated. Such is not even seen in professional journals.

I did like this textbook regardless of its many shortcomings, its not because I liked the author's style of writing. Its more or less the fact that my lecturer (I assume) used this book heavily in his lectures and so I used it as a supplementary text.

I would suggest, Chap T. Le's Introductory Biostatistics. However he goes too much into nonparametric methods and proportions and doesnt cocentration (to the degree I wanted) on continous data.

More robust and probably cost effect books are :Introductory Statistics for the Life Sciences by Samuels. But the Best book I have ever seen on the subject is "Introductory Biostatistics for the health sciences" By Chernick and Friis. The book is well priced and no portion of this book, I have seen as being useless.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text for 2nd Statistics Class.......2004-10-25

I'm taking my first biostatistics class in medical school, but the text I am using in class (Rosner) has lost me. I subsequently borrowed Daniel's book from the library (only because it has 7th editions), and I am glad that I picked it! Daniel is a good writer. The book is well organized and laid out. Important concepts are emphased and explained with minimum mathematics involved. The well thought out examples are worth working through as well for clarification of the applications of important concepts. However, as a beginner in statistics, I was lost in the midst of mathematics on certain concepts (given that I have a relatively strong mathematics background) without really understanding the meaning of some very basic terms, like percentile, confidence intervals.

What I do is to read another reference book that explains the very basic concepts in plain English first before reading this text. I am currently using Munro's Statistical Methods for Health Care Research. While both of them cover the same set of concepts, Daniel gives me the mathematical and more advanced explainations compare to Munro.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-12-19

I have used this and other texts by Daniel over the years and I find you can not go wrong with his works. He is a no nonsense author and a very good writer who uses plenty of examples. Get his nonparametric book also.

4 out of 5 stars Solid introductory reference.......2003-01-09

The title is very appropriate - this text provides a solid foundation in biostats. I used it for an intro course in grad school, and working through the text was very worthwhile. Previously cloudy concepts are now more clear, and I have a great reference for future use. More in-depth biostats deserves a consultation with a statistician, not a longer text. I agree with other reviewers that there are occasional mistakes (which need to be fixed - this is not even the first edition), but overall I would still highly recommend it.

    Book Description

Foundations of Program Evaluation heralds a thorough exploration of the field of program evaluation--looking back on its origins. By summarizing, comparing, and contrasting the work of seven major theorists of program evaluation, this book provides an important perspective on the current state of evaluation theory and provides suggestions for ways of improving its practice. Beginning in Chapter Two, the authors develop a conceptual framework to analyze how successfully each theory meets the specific criteria of its framework. Each subsequent chapter is devoted to the presentation of the theoretical and practical advice of a significant theorist--Michael Scriven, Donald Campbell, Carol Weiss, Joseph Wholey, Robert Stake, Lee Cronbach, and Peter Rossi.

A comprehensive treatment of the principles, mathematics, and statistics of image science

In today’s visually oriented society, images play an important role in conveying messages. From seismic imaging to satellite images to medical images, our modern society would be lost without images to enhance our understanding of our health, our culture, and our world.

Foundations of Image Science presents a comprehensive treatment of the principles, mathematics, and statistics needed to understand and evaluate imaging systems. The book is the first to provide a thorough treatment of the continuous-to-discrete, or CD, model of digital imaging. Foundations of Image Science emphasizes the need for meaningful, objective assessment of image quality and presents the necessary tools for this purpose. Approaching the subject within a well-defined theoretical and physical context, this landmark text presents the mathematical underpinnings of image science at a level that is accessible to graduate students and practitioners working with imaging systems, as well as well-motivated undergraduate students.

Destined to become a standard text in the field, Foundations of Image Science covers:

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Work and Very Clear.......2006-11-29

This is one of the few books that I will always treasure. Why? Because it is very clear. It has very very good discussions on everything it treats, and it treats a ton of material. In my engineering career, I have read or tried to read many many textbooks and this stands up as one of the absolute best. Barrett and Meyers give exquisite expositions on all of the mathematics necessary to study image science and many other related fields. For example, its treatment on probability, random processes, decision and estimation theory is actually better, more clear and more complete than many standard textbooks on the subject. If I get stuck reading any of them, I refer to this book and am saved.
I only wish they would issue it in two or three volumes. It is so ponderous (yet beautifully put together) if you carry it around you will get big muscles and get a good cardio workout!
I own it and leave it at home and I had the library at work get me a copy which I leave at work. If I want exercise I will go to my health club!
IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY OF THE 146 BUCKS IT COSTS.
If you want a great textbook to learn this technology from dont hesitate to buy it. You may need two - one for home and one for work, if your company wont buy you one.
    Really impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Correction to the quotation from JEI.......2006-08-20

I was the reviewer for this book in the Journal of Electronic Imaging.

The quotation from my review in JEI as it appears on this site should read:

"...a worthwhile addition to the armamentarium of any serious researcher in image science and will be an oft-quoted reference for many years to come." (Journal of Electronic Imaging, April-June 2005)

The corrections pertains to the word, oft-quoted, which has, for some reason, appeared as "opt-quoted" on this site in addition to the reference, "Journal of Electronic Imaging" instead of "Journal of Electrical Imaging"

This book, of course, is outstanding as I have stated in my review in the JEI.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough and rigorous resource.......2006-02-10

This book always amazes me whenever I use it for the absolutely incredible amount of material that it covers in such depth. I had the tremendous good fortune to have taken a Physical Optics course with Prof. Barrett, and it would be impossible to believe that one person can know so much unless you have personally talked with him about science or had a class with him. The rumor in the department is that Dr. Barrett is the only professor to at one time or other have taught ALL of the department's core graduate courses during his career at the College of Optical Sciences. Furthermore, he is one of the rare scientists who is an authority in his field both theoretically and experimentally, so you do not get a one-sided perspective as can often happen with science texts. The book reflects his vast knowledge, expertise, rigor, and thoroughness.

Of course, the book has several chapters on mathematical formalism, including the linear algebra, dirac delta function, Fourier theory, and group theory. The imaging theory is there, as well as diffraction theory. He covers photon statistics and detection, including the necessary quantum mechanics. He covers several advanced imaging concepts that I haven't any idea about myself. You probably could not find a more comprehensive book in the field of imaging and physical optics. Another benefit is that, at least for the chapters I have used, the individual chapters seem to stand well on their own and you are not forced to study the book in order.

This book is not for the faint of heart in any respect. The material itself is not for the faint of heart: it is extremely rigorous and will require your careful attention, but I believe it is well explained and manageable for someone who is serious about learning it. The size of the book is not for the faint of heart. I would hate to have to carry this thing around much (>1500 pages!!). The price is nothing to sneeze at either, at least for an impoverished graduate student like me, but Dr. Barrett told us that if you calculate the cost per equation, it may be one of the cheapest books on the market. Well, you get what you pay for. As far as anyone in the class found out, there are no typos, either. (Really. We were looking for them). This is certainly a relief for anyone who has much experience shelling out hundreds of dollars for expensive science textbooks.

I do not consider this book to be introductory material, but it is quite likely as close to exhaustive as anything you are apt to encounter in the physical sciences. If you are very serious about imaging or physical optics, this book will be an invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Very good and the most complete of the field!.......2004-02-18

The authors have done a great work. The book is complete and detailed. It is helping me a lot in the beginning of my Ph.D. It's really a must have in the field!

      Book Description

The classic text is Psychometric Theory. Like the previous edition, this text is designed as a comprehensive text in measurement for researchers and for use in graduate courses in psychology, education and areas of business such as management and marketing. It is intended to consider the broad measurement problems that arise in these areas and is written for a reader who needs only a basic background in statistics to comprehend the material. It also combines classical procedures that explain variance with modern inferential procedures.

      3 out of 5 stars Purchase the 2nd Edition.......2007-06-15

As have several other people who have reviewed this book I would suggest purchasing the 2nd edition. I have both of them sitting side by side on a shelf and use the 2nd edition much more than I use the 3rd one. It is not written in as clear a manner as the 2nd edition and sought to expand beyond psychometric theory which might have watered it down some. I was surprised that the reviewer who wrote that the 3rd edition is longer than the 2nd is correct as the 2nd is thicker - but it does have fewer pages.

1 out of 5 stars I would give it -5 starts if possible.......2007-01-29

This is not really a book. It's more like a composition notebook with definitions of terms on the even-number pages and, you bet, ruled spaces on the odd-number side. So this 103-page "book" is more like 51 pages (translation - you get only 50% for what you paid). Another reviewer said it's more like a Cliff Notes of the original book. Even that is too flattering. It's not even a Cliff Notes because what are on the left side (the even-number pages) are just definitions of terms taken from the textbook. There is no structure or organziation. So you cannot even tell how those terms relate to each other. I was actually looking for a Cliff Notes of Psychometric Theory, so it doesn't bother me it's not the real textbook. But in this form this book is totally useless. I could teach a monkey to copy all the terms and definitions from the textbook and publish a book like this and make some easy money. An outrageous rip-off! Stay away from all books in this Cram101 series. If you "cram" like this you probably will fail all your exams! I'm an college instructor myself and I will never test my students on how good they remember defintions in the book. At the very least learning is about understanding of the relationships between the terms.

1 out of 5 stars THIS LISTING IS MISREPRESENTATIVE.......2006-09-03

I ordered this book, thinking that it was the text book (as the title of the listing suggests). My mistake not to read all the way to the bottom of the page where the true nature of this publication is finally revealed, but SHAME ON AMAZON for listing it this way. There is nothing in the actual listing of this book that suggests that it is merely a "cliffs notes" guide to the book itself. I now have to scramble to find the correct book. When you're looking for textbooks, most of us look at the title, the author and the correct edition, which this listing contains at the very top. Thanks, Amazon, for taking advantage of those of us who are too busy to read the fine print!

2 out of 5 stars comprehensive but jumbled.......2006-03-16

This is one of the landmark Measurement books for Psychologists. It does present a relatively comprehensive treatment of the issues facing researchers when developing measures. Unfortunately, the style of writing used in the book makes it exceedingly difficult for students to extract the useful information from the chapters. Specifically, the chapters are not particularly well organized - particularly the ones with fewer equations in them - often jumping back and forth between topics rather than presenting them more systematically. Furthermore, the prose explaning concepts and equations is basically written in an overly complex and sometimes cryptic style more appropriate for mathematicians and psychologists from the 1950's than for graduate students or modern consumers. I only bought the book to augment the graduate level measurement class that I teach and despite the fact that I have a solid background in mathematics, I grown inwardly every time I have to pick up a chapter in this book and read it.

      3 out of 5 stars get the 2nd edition.......2005-02-06

I am in a management PhD program and we have to read this book for our required class in psychometric theory. I totally agree with one of the other reviewers that almost no term is clearly defined by Nunnally and Bernstein in this 3rd edition. The book goes on and on and on talking about validity, reliability, scaling, ... without defining any single term in a concise manner. It is very frustrating!
So, my suggestion for everyone is to get the 2nd edition. I read it and was happily surprised. Nunnally is great, Ira Bernstein messed the 3rd edition up (Nunnally died a while ago and Bernstein was responsible for the writing of this edition). The previous edition is much, much shorter and has better organized chapters that go right to the point (well, relatively speaking ). In addition, I recommend several short Sage books (e.g., factor analysis from Kim and Mueller), which are much clearer.
In any case, this book or better the 2nd edition, is a must have for any social science researcher (or wanna be researcher ).

        Book Description

Modern marketing techniques in industrialized countries cannot be implemented without segmentation of the potential market. Goods are no longer produced and sold without a significant consideration of customer needs combined with a recognition that these needs are heterogeneous. Since first emerging in the late 1950s, the concept of segmentation has been one of the most researched topics in the marketing literature. Segmentation has become a central topic to both the theory and practice of marketing, particularly in the recent development of finite mixture models to better identify market segments.
This second edition of Market Segmentation updates and extends the integrated examination of segmentation theory and methodology begun in the first edition. A chapter on mixture model analysis of paired comparison data has been added, together with a new chapter on the pros and cons of the mixture model. The book starts with a framework for considering the various bases and methods available for conducting segmentation studies. The second section contains a more detailed discussion of the methodology for market segmentation, from traditional clustering algorithms to more recent developments in finite mixtures and latent class models. Three types of finite mixture models are discussed in this second section: simple mixtures, mixtures of regressions and mixtures of unfolding models. The third main section is devoted to special topics in market segmentation such as joint segmentation, segmentation using tailored interviewing and segmentation with structural equation models. The fourth part covers four major approaches to applied market segmentation: geo-demographic, lifestyle, response-based, and conjoint analysis. The final concluding section discusses directions for further research.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but delivery is convoluted.......2004-05-19

This is an excellent book for getting a grip on quantitative market segmentation methods. It is a bit murky in places, but definately is one of the more advanced books on the subject.

I recommend it, but with reservation for those who are not up to speed in statistical analysis.

        4 out of 5 stars a good introductory book.......2000-08-26

I think this book is a good book for those who learnt some basic ideas of statistics, and who wish to improve their understanding in the applied field of statistics. To start this book, some calculus and linear algebra knowledge (one term each is enough)is a prerequisite. This book starts easily, but it'll come to very deep concepts without your noticing it at all.

        Book Description

Now available in paperback, this celebrated book remains a key systematic guide to a large part of the modern theory of Probability. The authors not only present the subject of Brownian motion as a dry part of mathematical analysis, but convey its real meaning and fascination. The opening, heuristic chapter does just this, and it is followed by a comprehensive and self-contained account of the foundations of theory of stochastic processes. Chapter 3 is a lively presentation of the theory of Markov processes. Together with its companion volume, this book equips graduate students for research into a subject of great intrinsic interest and wide applications.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Introduction of Brownian Motion and Markov Processes.......2005-08-15

The authors have compiled an excellent text which introduces the reader to the fundamental theory of Brownian motion from the point of view of modern martingale and Markov process theory. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to acquire and in-depth understanding of Brownian motion and stochastic calculus.

The book is fairly self-contained, although the reader should prepare herself with some prerequisite material. Rudin's "Real and Complex Analysis" 3rd edition and Norris's "Markov Chains" provide a good basis. You'll also need a solid understanding of the basic properties of Laplace transforms as is covered in an undergraduate course on differential equations (e.g. Schiff's "The Laplace Transform").

Rogers and Williams begin Chapter 1 of the 2nd edition of their first volume 'Foundations' by exploring Brownian motion from several different modern viewpoints. This is intended to help the reader develop an intuition about Brownian motion and related diffusions. They then move on to explore the well-known features of Brownian motion, including the strong Markov property, the Reflection principle, the Blumenthal Zero-One Law and the Law of the Iterated Logarithm.

The section on Brownian motion in higher dimensions is very nice and I enjoyed the applications of Brownian motion to complex analysis. I particularly liked the Ito's Rule-style proof of the Maximum Modulus Principle.
The authors close out Chapter 1 with detailed introductions of Gaussian and Levy Processes.

In the chapter on Brownian motion, the authors make several forward references to Chapter 2, which covers the prerequisite material from measure theory, probability theory, and stochastic processes needed for both volume I and II. If you found these forward references a bit unsettling, it is quite reasonable to first read Chapter 2 (sections 1-5), then read Chapter 1, and then finish up with canonical Brownian motion section at the end of Chapter 2.

Chapter 3 is a wonderful treatment of Markov processes and requires that the reader have an appreciation of the classical theory of Markov chains. In the first section of Chapter 3, the basic theory of operator semigroups is covered and the authors prove the famous Hille-Yosida Theorem.

The next section covers the 'base case' of operator semigroups. Rogers and Williams refer to these as Feller-Dynkin semigroups. (Ethier and Kurtz simply call these Feller semigroups in their book "Markov Processes: Characterization and Convergence".) Each Feller-Dynkin semigroup is shown to be realized by strong Markov process. Continuous Levy processes are then characterized as a nice application of the Feller-Dynkin theory.

The highlight of the next section is the Feynmac-Kac formulas. These are presented from the Markov process point of view (computing generators of transformed Markov processes), not from the usual PDEs point of view. Since the authors don't have Ito's Rule available in this first volume, they establish Feynman-Kac using the theory of additive functionals.

The final sections of the book deal with Markov processes with values in a countable state space. Ray processes and the Martin boundary are introduced, however as I began read this material, I felt that the authors believed that I already knew why Ray Theory is so important. I felt this last material would have been a bit better motivated with more of a tie-in to the theory of harmonic functions and the Dirichlet problem. However, the proof of Ray's Theorem is very elegant and really solidifies the reader's understanding of the Hille-Yosida Theorem.

Several of the sections wrap up with a small set of exercises. There are also exercises sprinkled throughout the text (several of which the authors plead with you to work through). The exercises have been thoughtfully selected and reinforce the material.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Survey of Markov Processes.......2005-01-29

This book, the first in a two volume set, is a wonderful survey of some of the most important results in modern mathematics. The books begin with Brownian motion, review results from measure theory, and proceed all the way up to the general theory of Markov processes. As a researcher in econometrics and finance, I have found these books incredibly useful.

Several things really set these books apart. First, the authors do a great job motivating the subject matter, giving the reader a sense of why technical topics are important. Although mathematical purists may quibble with this, it gives readers with backgrounds outside of pure mathematics a really useful perspective, and makes the progression of topics flow smoothly throughout the two volumes. Second, these books actually manage to provide motivation and intuition without sacrificing rigor, which is truly an amazing accomplishment. Finally, the price is outstanding--I would challenge anyone to find a text in this area that covers half as much ground for less than twice the price of R&W's books!

While on a similar technical level to Karatzas and Shreve, these books offer much more breadth and intuition at the cost of a few technical details and little treatment of PDEs (this is really my only complaint). Both are indispensible references, but Rogers and Williams is one of the finest mathematical texts I have encountered.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2005-01-15

This book and its companion volume are a well organized and relatively easy-to-read introduction to a wide variety of ideas in stochastic processes. It is not only a great reference (I always keep it on my desk) but it also has a solid expositional style that fully motivates concepts as they are introduced. The Ito Calculus volume goes deeper than a number of other books on topic including information on integration wrt to a general semimartingale instead of just BM and even an introduction to stochastic calculus on manifolds. My only complaints about the book are that it is separated into two volumes which can be kind of a pain and that its coverage of the SDE/PDE relationship is weak. I would recommend reading Karatzas&Shreeve in addition to this book to fill in some the SDE/PDE details and to get another point of view on the somewhat difficult topic of stochastic analysis

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2003-01-01

This is a great book. It is not difficult to read. The style is very informal and at times actually humourous. It does not follow the definition-lemma-proof way of doing things at the expense of leaving simple definitions out, but these can be easily found somewhere else. The book contains an enormous amount of information, and the authors are clearly men of great knowledge and depth. The book is very nicely produced (from a 1st edition) by Cambridge U Press. Very clearly printed, and at a low price for the volume. I highly recommend both volumes to anyone who works in stochastic processes, or mathematical finance (assuming one wants to learn things, rather than just talk about them).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Treatment of Theory of Diffusion, Martingales, Ito.......2001-11-19

Although not an easy read, this book contains a wealth of information on diffusion, martingales and Ito calculus. Reading difficulty is comparable to Karatzas/Shreve. Mastery of topics included enables the reader to get understanding of most of the current research papers in this field.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide to research techniques in the social sciences.......2005-09-09

Lee gives a six star performance by improving on what was already a five star performance in the third edition before Kerlinger's death. This is a must have book for anyone planning to do statistical analysis ,not only in psychology, but in the social sciences as well(especially economics). For example,Lee points out(pp.265,863)the importance of doing some type of test for goodness of fit(Chi- Square test, etc.)BEFORE a researcher assumes that he can make use of the normal probability distribution as an approximation of the data set at hand. This has not been the case in econometric time series studies of (a) financial markets(financial economics, portfolio analysis)or of(b) real, durable investment over the business cycle. The Black-Scholes equation and the CAPM model, both used as foundations in business finance courses in all countries worldwide, just assumes normality. The famous Keynes-Tinbergen debate about the logical foundations of econometrics in the Economic Journal of 1939-40 reveals that the founders of econometrics did not test the data correctly for normality.Keynes's comments about the necessity to demonstrate the uniformity, homogeneity, and stability of the time series data before any multiple regressions were run was ridiculed as the foolish ,out of date utterances of a once magnificient mind that had deteriorated by the late 1930's.Benoit Mandelbrot's massive data analysis, replicated by many different researchers in many different countries since the early 1970's,shows that the assumption of normality ,underlying statistical price data analysis done by economists in practically all financial markets(stocks, bonds, money, currency, exchange, commodities)over the last 60 years,is all wrong. There is one minor oversite in the fourth edition. There is no discussion of Ellsberg's paradox and/or ambiguous probabilities.Lee does ,of course, discuss Keynes's concept of the weight of the evidence and probabilities that have low weight. Both Lee and Brady had agreed 15 years ago that Keynes's w,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,was practically the same as Ellsberg's rho, defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.In real life, most of the probabilities will turn out to be ambiguous(plus being underweighted). In such situations it will not be possible to treat probability according to the Kolmogorov axioms. The experimental-empirical work of Tversky-Kahneman demonstrates that the vast majority of real world decision makers are rational(contrary to the conclusion drawn from the evidence by Tversky-Kahneman)but are working with ambiguous or underweighted probabilities.

Foundations of Behavioral Research by Kerlinger and Lee is one of my prescribed books, for a Research course that I am taking, as part of a Masters program.

In the course of working through the book, we (my fellow students and I), have encountered a large number of spelling, grammatical and even content errors. The book needs careful reading and editing.

However, the book has a lot to offer if you can look beyond the flaws mentioned above.

        5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2000-02-20

There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one. Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Edition is helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doing research should have this book. The examples are extremely useful in facilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis of data.
