Book Description
In just the last few years, traditional collaborationin a meeting room, a conference call, even a convention centerhas been superseded by collaborations on an astronomical scale.
Today, encyclopedias, jetliners, operating systems, mutual funds, and many other items are being created by teams numbering in the thousands or even millions. While some leaders fear the heaving growth of these massive online communities, Wikinomics proves this fear is folly. Smart firms can harness collective capability and genius to spur innovation, growth, and success.
A brilliant guide to one of the most profound changes of our time, Wikinomics challenges our most deeply-rooted assumptions about business and will prove indispensable to anyone who wants to understand competitiveness in the twenty-first century.
Based on a $9 million research project led by bestselling author Don Tapscott, Wikinomics shows how masses of people can participate in the economy like never before. They are creating TV news stories, sequencing the human genome, remixing their favorite music, designing software, finding a cure for disease, editing school texts, inventing new cosmetics, or even building motorcycles. You'll read about:
Rob McEwen, the Goldcorp, Inc. CEO who used open source tactics and an online competition to save his company and breathe new life into an old-fashioned industry.
Flickr, Second Life, YouTube, and other thriving online communities that transcend social networking to pioneer a new form of collaborative production.
Mature companies like Procter & Gamble that cultivate nimble, trust-based relationships with external collaborators to form vibrant business ecosystems.
An important look into the future, Wikinomics will be your road map for doing business in the twenty-first century.

The Mass Collaboration Gold Mine.......2007-10-19
This book hammers home a 21st century no-brainer. "It's all based on a principle the new generation of Web start-ups learned from the open source software community: There are always more smart people outside your enterprise boundaries than there are inside."
While it has mixed reviews ("made me feel alternately like Christopher Columbus and Grandpa Simpson"), it's an important addition to your organization's resource library.
Tapscot and Williams deliver fascinating case studies of companies that have opened up their internal secrets/data to the world so "mass collaboration" can help them solve big problems. Procter & Gamble did it and so did a failing Toronto-based gold-mining firm. In 2000, Goldcorp, Inc. ran a contest, the "Goldcorp Challenge," with $575,000 in prize money--and posted all of the mine's proprietary data on the web. The request: help us find more gold. The result: "More than 1,000 virtual prospectors from 50 countries got busy crunching the data."
Mass collaboration from the most unlikely sources and disciplines targeted new mother lodes on their 55,000-acre property. It worked: $100 invested in the company in 1993 was worth more than $3,000 in 2006.
There's a core value here (a biblical one) for faith-based organizations and churches: it's all kingdom work. It's time to open up and work together versus holding your ministry close to the vest. (It's not your ministry anyway!)
Read this book and then ask your team these questions: 1) What's our biggest challenge in the next 12 months? 2) Would mass collaboration help us solve it? 3) Do we operate as if the smartest people are INSIDE our organization or OUTSIDE our organization? Why?
Future Shock 2.0.......2007-10-14
Reading this 2006 book made me feel alternately like Christopher Columbus and Grandpa Simpson. Co-authors Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams define a near-term future of breathtaking wonder and innovation, yet I came away finding their best-case scenario hard to swallow.
"Wikinomics" describes existing business models in various industries, from which it extrapolates their ongoing development as part of a larger revolution of revolutionary openness, "on par with the Italian renaissance or the rise of Athenian democracy," the authors write. "Mass collaboration across borders, disciplines, and cultures is at once economical and enjoyable."
Like a lot of other posted reviewers here, I found "Wikinomics" too gushy and jargony, throwing up random-sounding words like "ideagoras" and "prosumers" as if their very existence connoted concreteness of often-fuzzy notions. The book's airy dismissal of copyright law and the protection of intellectual property rights as old thinking annoyed me immensely. And the notion of a future of non-hierarchal business enterprises strikes me as a terribly naive misreading of the most important aspect of the equation: the human element.
But give Tapscott and Williams points for presenting their case for futurism in a way that often feels quite compelling. They start with perhaps the best such example, by presenting the case of a Canadian mining company that, stymied in their search for gold, opened their records up to the outside world through online file sharing, soliciting ideas about where in their vast mine network they should dig for rich veins. The resulting influx of new thinking catapulted Goldcorp from a $100 million company to one worth $9 billion.
Tapscott and Williams take the success of Goldcorp and look for other industries where similar ideas have been practiced with similar results. With some, like this website, the fruits of innovation are immediate and obvious. With others, like old-guard conglomerate Procter & Gamble, success has been nearly as profound in more subtle ways.
The authors score some points, but also spout a lot of obvious Panglossian hyperbole. Wikipedia is as accurate as the Encyclopedia Britannica (better check that with John Seigenthaler). The youth-oriented website TakingITGlobal is like a new United Nations in embryonic form.
But their viewpoint has obvious value, too, and applicability in the world around us, even beyond the net world from which "Wikinomics" springs. Looking at the reinvention of BestBuy through its acquisition of Geek Squad, or how the workplace itself is changing shape to adapt to faster-moving, less-centralized structuring, is "Wikinomics" at its most challenging, and best reading.
I didn't put down this book convinced I saw the future, let alone a good future. But I did feel myself thinking differently about life and work than when I first picked "Wikinomics" up. Maybe that's the point.
Great Book to Read.......2007-10-02
Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything
As I refresh my professional career for the second decade of the 21st Century, I decided ro read this book, and I was not wrong. This is a most read book for everyone that's looking to stay relevant in the digital economy and the disrupting collaboration paradign. I highly recommeded.
Good, but not critical enough and scores high on the buzzword-meter.......2007-09-12
The book gives a quick tour of the new collaborative ways in which people aggregate and process information. It points out that collaboration can also be applied to produce new 'stuff', outside of software and even applying to manufacturing. It makes for interesting reading for people who a) know something about open source and want to know about its business implications and b) managers who don't know about open source/collaboration but would like to.
It is, imho, less interesting for those who want in-depth answers to the real thorny _business_ problems around open-source. I.e. How to make money at it, if you want to. It hints at important questions such as rewarding the community at large, not losing the family jewels as you open up, etc. Unfortunately, it never quite gets down to specific recommendations beyond "you have to find the right mix of proprietary vs. open source IP".
Not to criticize it overmuch. Wikinomics often jars your thinking with insightful nuggets. For example, it cites Goldcorp as the example of a mining company which opened up its secret prospection data to outsiders. Wikinomics, probably rightly, uses that as a counter-intuitive example of enlisting external help for a type of company that never shares that kind of data. Hmmm, why not share? If the prospection data applies to land on which only your company can operate, isn't that a pretty safe gamble? I don't know, really, but the point is that the anecdote makes you think of things differently. Same with IBM's success at getting a new OS (Linux)almost for free, while gathering goodwill from the community and genuinely collaborating. How far Big Blue's embarrassing anti-trust proceedings seem now...
Less helpful is Wikinomics' recurring use of cherry-picked anecdotes by sector, rather than a broad analysis of various businesses. First of all, it rarely compares its chosen 'smart companies' to their competitors. Yes, BMW is opening up. Does that make their cars any better? How is their stock doing? vs. Toyota? How is their reliability? How innovative are their cars?
Red Hat is a huge success story in Linux, but its dominance also highlights the relative failure of other Linux vendors. No explanation is given for that - network effects? first mover?
I would have welcomed some case studies of failures for big corporations in opening up. What caused those failures? What can be learned from them?
Google is also cited as a big example of openness. That is only partially true and could have served to highlight the necessary(?) split between proprietary information and public openness. Google opens up its APIs and the search is certainly free. I am a big fan myself. However, they have not chosen to release much code back to the community (cf. MapReduce) , mostly by sidestepping the GPL because they don't distribute their software. Their choice, and probably motivated by good business logic. Apple also walks a fine line between leveraging open source and keeping its business very much a secret.
This is just the kind of case studies Wikinomics could sink its teeth into, but it spends way too much time gushing over all the boundless possibilities of collaboration.
Conclusion: a good eye-opener but take it with a grain of salt. Note that my perspective is that of a developer interested in open source _and_ business profits.
An interesting read........2007-09-04
I liked this book, and it opened my eyes to many other "community-driven" technologies/companies. While I thought a lot of the ideas were very "common sense", it was well written, and had some great anecdotes. I recommend this book for anyone interested in social networking, building communities, etc.

Uniquely Creative.......2006-12-13
The red book of selling is a very unique sales book. My first Gitolmer book and I have to say that I am in awe at the way information was laid out and the way in which the book was presented. He gets a 9/10 for creativity and design.
The information in the book is no less. I felt very `pumped up' after reading it. It may be Gitolmer's inspirational yet witty writing style that I could relate to.
The content isn't deep however the coverage is quite comprehensive. Overall a very good sales book, one that I will definitely re-read over the years.
Little Red Book with BIG ideas!.......2006-12-11
Great book! Motivational with enough sales techniques to improve any seller's performance. As a sales manager in the competitive world of wireless I'm always seeking a better and faster way to get performance from my team. This book gives practical ideas that can be implemented right away to increase sales. For example page 145 begins the section on how to create an irresistable voicemail message that will make you stand out from your competitors and get the sale. We tried it with very good results.
I also like this book because it's written with the working salesperson's time schedule in mind. Easy to read. Easy to carry. The cloth cover makes it durable in the field. No flimsy soft cover to worry about here. A good thing because you'll be referring to it often during your sales career.
If you're serious about selling success add "Little Red Book of Selling" to your sales library. Act on the priciples and ideas and you too will discover why people hate to be sold but they love to buy.
One of the best Sales Training books ever.......2006-12-02
I buy this book for every sales person I hire. Its a bench mark of what every sales person has to do to be a success. Jeffrey goes through all the steps required for any sales person to be truely great in this profession.
If you are thinking about going into sales read this book. He will tell you what it will take for you to be successful.
The Little Red Book of Selling.......2006-11-03
The book is exciting and entertaining. But nothing different from the usual. Also, the techniques presented are too vague and lack a systematic approach. If interested on such topics SPIN selling by Huthwaite is probably the best book on the subject.
A small, fun-to-read book that will improve your career.......2006-10-10
If you had to choose one skill that you would consider the most important for an entrepreneur to possess, what would you choose? I'm sure many different opinions exist. But if you ask me, the most important skill for an entrepreneur to possess is the ability to sell him or herself -- to present him/herself in a way that attracts others.
Whether you're literally selling a product door-to-door or just socializing at a party, it doesn't matter. You're always selling, and the more skilled you become at selling, the more successful you'll be as an entrepreneur. Now, just between you and me, I'm not that great at selling yet. But I want to become great. So what should I do? Right! I should learn from someone who is already great.
I'm going to recommend someone to you in a moment, but first let me ask you a question. Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill and wished there was a quick, easy, painless way to do it? If so, we have a lot in common, and I know of a special book that should be on the top of your to-read list. It's called The Little Red Book of Selling, and it's written by Jeffery Gitomer.
Jeffery Gitomer is known as one of the best salesmen in the world, and his writing shows it. This small, fun-to-read book will have your mind buzzing with excitement over the cool tips you'll discover within. Each page is plastered with fresh, practical, powerful information that you can apply to see immediate results. Here are a few of the ideas Mr. Gitomer presents:
-The Two Most Important Words in Selling
-What to Do When You Can't Seem to Get a Sale
-How to Use Humor to Make Sales Easy
-The 21.5 Best Places to Network (and the secrets to doing it successfully)
-How to Know When You're Wasting Your Time
-Much More...
It was just last weekend that a collegue suggested that I read The Little Red Book of Selling - and I'm glad he did! By now my recommendation to you should be obvious. Pick up a copy of your own -- every entrepreneur should.

A great starting point.......2007-06-26
With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.
Not for developers.......2007-05-13
Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions
Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05
It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.
if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11
This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.
Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11
When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.
Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.

The material is easy to understand and comprehensive. I really like the cd's included, they are easy to navigate and I like all the different options you have with the practice tests. FYI, according to ciscopress.com, this version of the ccna exam expires Nov. 7th, '07.
Best Resource for CCNA Test Takers........2007-09-07
This is an excellent in-depth resource for those wanting to complete the current Cisco CCNA certification test. The information in this book covers every scenario on the test in detail, except for the labs, where an understanding of the command structure comes in to play. It should be noted that the test will be updated significantly in 11/2007, so this book may have some outdated information or be missing some new facts for the revised test at that point. But for now, this is the best resource for CCNA test takers to date.
Excellent guide to get CCNA........2007-07-13
This library is an excellent guide for peoples want get CCNA certification , very simple to understand and give you more than one way to learn. I really recomend.
One of the most cost effective and comprehensive resources to study for the CCNA exams!.......2007-07-08
One of the most cost effective and comprehensive resources to study for the CCNA 640-801, ICND 640-811 and the INTRO 640-821 exams! The CCNA Official Exam Certification Library, 2nd Edition, ISBN: 1-58720-169-0, by Wendell Odom is published by Cisco Press.
The two book set, is one of the most comprehensive CCNA resources to date. Currently, Cisco offers the CCNA candidate with two exam formats in preparing for their CCNA certification. These are the INTRO 640-821 and the ICND 640-811 exam or the one exam format: CCNA 640-801. The CCNA Exam Certification library is packaged in a two book set. The exam candidate can study for the CCNA INTRO (640-821) Exam and receive a firm understanding of Network Fundamentals, Operating Cisco Devices, LAN Switching, TCP/IP, and Wide-Area Networking and then take the INTRO 640-821 exam.
Also, if they have hands-on working experience with the Cisco switches and routers they can utilize the CCNA Self-Study CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide to study for the one-exam format: CCNA 640-801 exam or the second exam of the two test format: ICND: 640-811. This book is a more in depth resource that focuses on LAN Switching, Spanning Tree Protocol, Virtual LANS and Trunking, TCP/IP, RIP, IGRP, and Static Route Concepts and Configuration, OSPF and EIGRP Concepts and Configuration, Advanced Routing Protocol and TCIP/IP topics, Wide-Area Networks, ISDN and Dial-on-Demand Routing, Frame Relay and Network Security.
The two certification guides overlap in their content, but it will be clear to the reader that the CCNA ICND book goes in-depth in the topics listed above. I would suggest to begin with the CCNA INTRO guide and when the topics overlap in the two books I would switch to the CCNA ICND guide only after the candidate has a clear understanding of the particular content (i.e., LAN Switching). By performing this technique will ensure that you have fully understood material and will be well prepared for the exam (s).
There is a companion CD-ROM that accompanies the book set that contains more than 400 practice questions for the ICND, INTRO, and CCNA exams, including simulation-based questions. The CD also contains flash card questions, hands-on exercises and a light edition of the NetSim LE network simulation software. The full version of the Network Sim software is: ISBN: 1587201313. The certification library book set also comes with the CCNA Video Mentor Library Edition. The CD contains 3 select video labs from the full version of the CCNA Video Mentor; ISBN 1-58720-168-2, by Wendell Odom.
Updates to the CCNA Self-Study CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide can be found at: www.ciscopress.com/1587200945, as well as, for the CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide can be found at: www.ciscopress.com/158720083X.
According to the Cisco training website, [...] the last date to take the CCNA 640-801, ICND 640-811 and the INTRO 640-821 exams is on November 6, 2007. The CCNA candidate would be extremely prepared utilizing this resource! I give these materials 4 out of 5 stars.
Good book with clear explanations.......2007-06-29
Both of these books are structured very well and everything is explained clearly in a easy-to-follow manner. My only caveat is that newbies to routers (like me) may have difficulty passing the exam (the single 640-801 one) with just these texts. The CD-ROM test engine is excellent, and resembles the actual test. I also used Transcender software (a good tool for review and like the test itself), tests from TestKing (much easier than the tests), an Exam Cram book (not like the actual exam at all), another test package, and 2 different computer-based video training packages. That said, I barely passed the exam, even though I feel that I understand the concepts and details pretty well. I could quickly subnet in my head and many questions I could answer in five seconds. But some of the questions were extremely tricky. And it took me 10 minutes to get the router simulation to work properly -- it didn't work as smoothly and easily as it did in the tutorial before the exam. It's not an easy test, by any means. I spent over 10 minutes doing the simulation when I should have had it done in 2.
I may not have done as well as I thought I would because I was afraid I would run out of time, but I ended up with over 20 minutes to spare. However, you can't go back and change your answers, which is a shame for how I test, because I like to put my gut reaction first and think it over later after my mind is refreshed. You definitely have to move through the test quickly.
These books and the CD-ROM included with it were the main reasons I passed. You can't be too prepared for this one. Good luck!
Book Description
Do you want to get ahead in life?
Climb the ladder to personal success?
The secret, master networker Keith Ferrazzi claims, is in reaching out to other people. As Ferrazzi discovered early in life, what distinguishes highly successful people from everyone else is the way they use the power of relationships—so that everyone wins.
In Never Eat Alone, Ferrazzi lays out the specific steps—and inner mindset—he uses to reach out to connect with the thousands of colleagues, friends, and associates on his Rolodex, people he has helped and who have helped him.
The son of a small-town steelworker and a cleaning lady, Ferrazzi first used his remarkable ability to connect with others to pave the way to a scholarship at Yale, a Harvard MBA, and several top executive posts. Not yet out of his thirties, he developed a network of relationships that stretched from Washington’s corridors of power to Hollywood’s A-list, leading to him being named one of Crain’s 40 Under 40 and selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the Davos World Economic Forum.
Ferrazzi's form of connecting to the world around him is based on generosity, helping friends connect with other friends. Ferrazzi distinguishes genuine relationship-building from the crude, desperate glad-handling usually associated with “networking.” He then distills his system of reaching out to people into practical, proven principles. Among them:
Don’t keep score: It’s never simply about getting what you want. It’s about getting what you want and making sure that the people who are important to you get what they want, too.
“Ping” constantly: The Ins and Outs of reaching out to those in your circle of contacts all the time—not just when you need something.
Never eat alone: The dynamics of status are the same whether you’re working at a corporation or attending a society event— “invisibility” is a fate worse than failure.
In the course of the book, Ferrazzi outlines the timeless strategies shared by the world’s most connected individuals, from Katherine Graham to Bill Clinton, Vernon Jordan to the Dalai Lama.
Chock full of specific advice on handling rejection, getting past gatekeepers, becoming a “conference commando,” and more, Never Eat Alone is destined to take its place alongside How to Win Friends and Influence People as an inspirational classic.

Simple, but good advice.......2007-10-17
The advice presented in this book is quite simple and nothing is really new. Don't expect any advice based on the academic writing on social networks. Still I liked the style of writing and good practical examples. The key problem is naturally to implement the author's advice. He has for instance great advice on dinner parties, but the key difficulty is to get moving and doing it. In this regard, a book cannot really do much. Still, this book makes it as easy as possible.
Not impressed.......2007-10-15
This stuff put into practice would spread your network to thin and you wouldn't make real friends with anybody. I didn't gain anything from reading this book.
too basic.......2007-10-14
some good ideas but would expect a book like this to sell for $4.00 to $6.00. Here is the gist of the book: middle class childhood and was able to get into Yale where he met people, became friends and kept in touch with. Guess what, he was able to tap the network and help himself... wow who knew? So, if you are going to a City college you might no be meeting the "right" people. Seriously, for those with no clue about being social, this book may help them. Marketing can be learned... many of us (even experienced markeing people) at time can be a wall flower. Don't fret, just follow up and talk about things other than work.... kids, pets, sports, etc.
Be a better connector.......2007-10-14
Your don't have to be a super-connector like Ferrazzi to be a better connector in your own life. I took away some useful perspectives that I am starting to incorporate into my own routines. For instance, this book helped me recognize the potential value that lies hidden in my own Outlook address book.
I have begun to turn the regrets I felt for not keeping in touch into actions. "Never Eat Alone" is not only a great title for this book, but also a concept that helps to remind me of the simple opportunities available on a daily basis to better connect with the people around me.

Get ready to slash your wrists!.......2004-04-20
This is one of the worst texts I've ever read! The author writes as though the reader totally understands every complex example presented. This is amazing because some parts are very simple and easy to understand. The calculations and formulas are almost to impossible to comprehend. Don't waste your time with this book! There are better, more comprehesive communication networks books out there. This text is by NO means "A First Course"!
Informative, good pace and valuable to network beginners.......2003-06-01
Excellent read. The explanations were clear with lots of examples. Teaches network basics as well as intermediate topics. Includes historical facts and future projections.
Highly recommended for beginners and refreshers.
as bignners we need mercy !!.......2002-10-31
as bignners in the field we need something to understand not to suffer with .. we need something that can build our base not to destroy our encourage and our interest to go deep in the field of networking .. SO I ADD MY OPINION TO THE OTHERS AS WELL :(
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!.......2002-09-30
this book is absolutely worthless. i actually took a communication class with the author of this book at UC Berkeley, and it is hard for me to decide who's worse: the book or prof. walrand. the entire class hated the book, even the TA's were not able to help us understand it because they didn't understand the book either. this is absolutely the worst book i've ever read. the prof knew the whole class hated him, so he didn't even dare to show up during the finals.
any other book in networking would be better.
Bent over a table.......2002-05-02
This book was the absolute worst textbook I have ever encountered. Unfortunately, I needed it for my first Master's degree class in Communications. Absolutely unclear in its explainations and problems and questions that seem to come out of the blue. The appendices were useless is describing queuing theory and statistics. The entire class hated this book, but had to buy it new. I'm embarrassed to say that the professor for the course reviewed it.
This book is a huge waste of money and material.

Master hands-on CCNA skills with a network simulator that lets you build your own network, with up to 200 devices
- Gain hands-on experience for all CCNA exam topics
- Select from 45 different router and switch models
- Learn with integrated content from the number-One selling
CCNA Certification Library written by Wendell Odom
Cisco CCNA Network Simulator is a boxed software product derived from the previously self-published Boson NetSim from Boson Software. It provides users with a means to develop hands-on skills at the CCNA level without the investment in expensive hardware. The software, which includes the Boson Router Simulator, was designed to give users the skills needed to pass the new CCNA 800 series exams (640-801, 640-811, and 640-821). The combination of Cisco IOS and Catalyst simulated command line interface (CLI) establishes a foundation of knowledge that is integral to CCNA success, both in taking the CCNA exams and in one's daily job as a CCNA professional. The title includes a drag-and-drop Network Designer that supports up to 200 devices using 45 different device models, including 40 different router models and 2 Catalyst switch models. Users can have up to 200 active Telnet sessions configuring devices inside the simulator. This unique feature allows users to create their own lab topologies, freeing them for the first time from the configurations locked in place by the software vendor. Currently no other network simulation package offers this much versatility and support.
Cisco CCNA Network Simulator also includes a comprehensive lab menu that contains more than 100 structured labs for users to run. More than 20 advanced-level labs from Wendell Odom's CCNA texts allow users to perform complex tasks on networks that combine all the various CCNA technologies.
Boson Software, Inc. is a software company specializing in products for test preparation and the development of hands-on skills. Boson is a Cisco Learning Partner, and offers practice tests on every major certification in the IT industry, as well many outside the IT market. Boson Software is headquartered in Tampa, FL.

this is the best network simulator for ccna.......2007-07-16
This network simulater covers every thing that a ccna student will like to know about configuring cisco routers and passing his/her exams.I am very happy with the simulater and hope to pass my ccna exams after I have finished doing the labs,by the grace of God.
CCNA Simular Works Great!.......2007-05-14
This is a great learning tool for anyone who is taking the CCNA curriculum. It works well. The only thing is that it does not support all of the router commands that are in the Cisco curriculum labs. I would find that a lot of times, I would get halfway through the lab and then it would not recognize a command. Other than this "glitch" or if you want to pay through the nose for the CCNP version it's still worth the money. I finished my Cisco curriculum with an A because of the practice labs and the labs included. It sure beats buying the real thing and playing with it. Especially if you want to save some money.
Buy it...You'll like it! :)
good book.......2007-05-13
i ended up changing my careers to websphere application server.
did not get certified in ccna. i am sure this book will get you certified.
Avoid this product.......2007-05-03
If you're trying to pass the CCNA exam (either the single exam or the two-part exam) I would recommend that you buy the Exam Certification Library from Cisco Press (which includes a "Lite" version of the CCNA Network Simulator) and bypass this offering. Then make sure that you get some time on real equipment, if at all possible. The bottom line on the full blown version is that it's not worth the $$$. I wish I'd read the reviews on this product before I bought it. It's true what others have said about the deficiencies of this product. If you're interested in really mastering things like Spanning tree protocol you'll not get that good feeling from this product. STP doesn't work outright! I'm a veteran of certification testing. In all, I've taken 15 tests covering various technologies from various vendors. I took the INTRO test (relying on the books in the Exam Certification Library and the NetSIM) and passed it easily. However, for the first time in my life, I failed a test when I took the ICND exam. I went through the simulator exercises twice before the exam. I read the book cover-to-cover twice before the exam. It's not that I'm a bad test taker. Before the ICND I was 14 for 14. The simulator simply didn't prepare me for the exam. Period.
Great Teacher .......2007-03-16
This is a good investment for anyone new to configuring routers and switches. The labs are very good tools to teach you how to config and help you understand the reasons behind the command.

Don't believe the other reviews.......2007-10-16
This book consists primarily of motivational ideas that are much better presented elsewhere. If you want sales motivation--success check out Brian Tracy. The sales ideas are weak and not original. For good sales information see Spin Selling, Question Based Selling, or Brian Tracy on Selling. If you've never read a book on sales or success you might like this one, but having read piles of books on sales and related subjects I say this is one of the worst. There are no original thoughts here!
A really easy read.......2007-10-06
As a salesman once upon a time myself i know how little time 'good' salespeople get to read books, digest the information, work out how and when to use a technique and adapt their presentations when they have worked a full day and are expected to go out the next.
If i have just discribed YOU and you are pounding the highways then this is the book for you.
I was reading a comment left buy Dave Lakhani who put it so very well that i'd do worse than to repeat it. "You can pick this book up and open it at any page". This is exaclty my experience of the book which is why all salespeople looking to learn easy step by step new techniques should buy this book and have it next to them in the car to read a page or two before sitting an appointment.

Perfect for the Sales Rookie.......2007-08-03
Anyone just entering the field of sales will benefit from the practical advice in this book. Forget about the thousands of textbook style sales books and pickm this one up.
This is NOT your average how-to guide! .......2007-06-11
"Every major sales answer you need to know is in this book." -From the Book.
Take a look inside this book and you'll see that this is no ordinary how-to guide. This guy is brilliant in that he has went off the beaten path of how a book is supposed to look. The book is approximately 5x8 in size, and is covered in red fabric and comes with a handy built in bookmark. I love the use of color throughout the book. The author has chosen to color important words and phrases throughout, to make them stand out in your mind, and there are some tasteful illustrations that enhance the messages conveyed.
I know so many sales people who don't like to read. If that's you, well, then you'll LOVE this book because not only is it an easy book to read and understand, but the style is totally fun. You may even forget you're reading and all the while you'll come away with a new perspective on selling!
I was hooked and knew I had to have this book from the beginning. I love the unconventional style of the book. Now, besides the great job he did on the look of the book, there is some extremely good information contained within these red walls. 99.5 real world answers are contained within 6.5 chapters. Loads of great advice on things like setting goals and How to do your best every day, prospecting, and even how to write a thank you note.
This book has more than earned it's spot on my bookshelf!

A great overview.......2007-07-30
This book has consistently been one of the most accessible overviews of the CCNA material. I have been using these books since the 3rd edition and I have yet to be disappointed. Although the book may not go into as much depth as some of the other books on the market, it presents the ideas in a very clear language. If you are looking to get a good idea of how IP networks are put together and a basic introduciton to configuring cisco routers, this book will be a huge help.
Todd Lamle Rocks.......2007-07-15
I am preparing for my CCNA and I am so happy to have this book to prep me for my Exams.
Todd knows exactly how to dissect the difficult topics. I've been putting off taking the exam for 4 years now. With this book I've got the confidence and knowledge I need to ace it!
Thank you Todd
M. Charles
Great to begin with.......2007-05-24
My advice would be to start with this book first, then move onto CCNA Cisco press. Todd Lammle wrote this book as if you where setting in a class and learning from an instructor, some of the basic information that you need to know for exam will be covered in his text that can be easily be pick up by using his book. The only problem with this book is that he doesn't cover everything on the exam; as stated by the other reviewer. Cisco press is going to give you everything you need; but with dry content. The Cisco press content is not that bad if you start off with Sybex.
Excellent.......2007-05-07
There isn't much more I can say about this book than has already been said. I used Todd's guide to help me pass the CCNA in 2000 and am using him again to recertify. Just an excellent book. Period.
Behind the Times........2007-04-10
Five years ago, I took a course on the CCNA exam, and the Sybex book was the standard course material. The Cisco books at that time were overly wordy, dry, and difficult to learn from. This seems to be the major reason Sybex became the textbook of choice for Cisco material. I had good success with that book and passed the test on the first try with little complications.
Then, a few months ago, I decided to go back and tackle the new CCNA exam and get certified again. Naturally, I went back to Sybex and bought this book. After a month of study, I felt I had fully grasped all the concepts in the book and began taking practice tests in preparation for the 640-801 exam. I was disappointed to find that I was repeatedly failing the practice tests. I spent some time reviewing and slowly came to realize that there are a variety of topics you will face on the new CCNA exams that aren't favored enough in the Sybex book. Frustrated, I went and picked up the Cisco Press: Official Exam Certification Library, which consists of the "CCNA Intro" and "CCNA ICND" books. I thought at first that having two books for this material was overkill. After several weeks of reading through these books, I am startled at how much raw content is in these two books that is directly relevant to the test. Even more obvious is how basic the Sybex course material is in comparison.
My personal experience is this: Cisco seems to have toughened up their exams quite a bit since they switched to the new CCNA exam, and Sybex doesn't seem to have kept up with this. Considering Sybex has also tried to squeeze the entire CCNP course material into a single book, when Cisco has four separate books for the same material, I'm not surprised that the CCNA book feels compressed. In particular, the areas I'm finding the biggest gaps between the two are as follows:
Cat 2950 Switch configuration - This is kept to a minimum in the Sybex book and only the most basic commands are offered.
General Routing Troubleshooting - A big theme in the practice tests I have taken thus far is the ability to properly troubleshoot various router setups. While the Sybex book gives you all the basic show commands and gives a very straightforward configuration for each topic, it simply isn't enough. There should have been several chapters dedicated purely to troubleshooting. The Cisco material did not provide dedicated chapters to troubleshooting either, but they take much longer to explain the topics than Sybex did.
Various Miscellaneous Topics - There are a variety of commands, terms, and concepts that I never saw until I started taking practice tests and picked up the Cisco Press CCNA Flash Cards book.
In closing, I will say that I like the way Todd Lammle writes. He is very easy to understand and Chapter 3 of this book (which covers IP subnetting) is a very well written chapter. This book is by no means "bad". It just isn't enough to pass the exam on it's own. If you have yet to purchase any material for the CCNA, I strongly recommend you spend the extra ten dollars and pick up the Official Exam Certification Library from Cisco Press. While it may be a little more difficult to read, it will be worth it when you go to take your test.
Book Description
The Developer's Guide to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 teaches developers how to build solutions that leverage the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS v3) platform. Many developers are not yet familiar with this platform and its capabilities, so the fi rst few chapters focus on the out-of-the-box experience and how to secure solutions built on top of it. From there, the book explores some of the key aspects of the WSS v3 platform and how to leverage them for building applications. Throughout the book, practical programming solutions using real-world examples are used to illustrate the possibilities of SharePoint and to teach developers how to build their own applications. Some application components covered include Features, Site Defi nitions, Web Services, Web Parts, Events, and Workflows. The book also teaches how to migrate from 2.0 to 3.0 and to work with the object model and built-in WSS Web Services in various settings. Developers who want to usurp the fundamental capabilities of WSS v3 rather than building those facilities themselves will fi nd everything they need. The book doesn't attempt to cover the capabilities of Microsoft Offi ce Server System 2007 (MOSS), but MOSS is based entirely on WSS v3 so all the examples found in this book can also be used in that environment too. In fact, everything covered in this book equally applies to WSS v3 and MOSS. While this book attempts to bring developers from the ground up, any Web-based .NET programming experience will prove helpful in understanding the concepts presented within. The C# language is used exclusively in the text but there are comparable VB.NET code listings on the CD-ROM.

Not my kind of book.......2007-07-23
I would recommend "Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 " instead of this book. That book feels more upto date with the subject.
Great Development book from Bleeker.......2007-06-23
Todd Bleeker is enthusiastic about SharePoint, and it shows. This book is a great resource for people wanting to get up to speed with programming in SharePoint 2007. Todd gives a lot of examples and lots of background on the subject covered. I'm not a developer and I could understand the book and was able to follow along and even use some of the examples.
If you want to get your feet wet with SharePoint programming, you can't go wrong with this book.
Good resource for beginner, but many typos error!.......2007-05-07
For WSS v3, the new version of SharePoint product, it's not easy to find a good book. Yes, you can download the SDK. But somehow it's not a good start point for beginners! This book was the first one did a good job on providing guidance for the beginners of WSS developers. Even over, it show us many different aspect of programming for WSS, such as Event Receiver, Custom Field Type, and Web Part.
But this book contain many typos error! The publisher did introduced many error!? Very often, you must go to the CD to find the correct code or Fig.
But I still recommend this book. Very valueable! True.
Not impressed.......2007-04-25
I have read more than half of the book and am very disappointed with the content. He spends far too much time explaining how things were done in SharePoint Services v2 and then how they are different in v3. I was hoping for more information about how to do things in SharePoint v3 but there is not enough meat to actually get in and do anything.
SharePoint Developer's Guide.......2007-04-14
This book is the best resource I've found for SharePoint development. It has 3 chapters dedicated to Web Part development for which I am grateful. Sometimes the turorials don't match up to the IDE but I have been able to figure out what I need to do.
It is apparent that this book was put out to market before it was truly ready, yet I am grateful that it exists imperfectly or I wouldn't have any good resource for developing with SharePoint.
The author provides a website to address erata including a forum which he responds to at times. The website has helped me get over some tutorial problems mentioned above.
The book is definitely worth the money; the examples have saved me considerable pain and frustration.
