Book Description
What is Enterprise Resource Planning and why does it matter? Like The Goal, Why ERP? is a short novel about a manager in a furniture manufacturing business who is charged with learning about and implementing a new ERP system, SAP R/3. The story tells of his experience and provides a non-technical, non-programming introduction to the basic concepts and architecture of ERP systems.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Introduction to the Enterprise Software Concept.......2005-09-07
I am a Professor in the Management Information Systems area and I use this book as a quick and relatively painless introduction for students who know absolutely nothing about the software that supports Integrated Business Systems. It is an excellent read for that purpose. It focuses on why Enterprise Systems are valuable for some companies, the dangers of blind adoption, the value and power of systems integration, and some of the costs associated with implementing these systems. Just as important, it does this in an interesting way. At least more interesting to my students, who are either dual majors in business administration and information systems or straight majors in some area of business administration. While the other reviewers are correct in their blistering reviews of the book from a technologist's perspective, the book is not written for technologists. As the title suggests, it is a primer and primers are written at the most elementary level.
I have not come across a better book for someone with no knowledge of Integrated Business Systems to learn quickly in 119 pages what Enterprise Systems are about.
REVIEW FOR STUDENTS.......2005-04-21
I read this book as a requirement for my Management Informations Systems class. While it is a dry read, I acknowlege that it was a noble effort to present the information in the form of a novel. Do not read this book if you are an expert on SAP or very familiar with ERP systems. This is little more than a text book put in the form of one large example. Keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.
Why ask why?.......2004-10-28
I picked up this little jewel hoping to learn something about SAP's R/3 product and believe me, it took some serious effort to plow my way through this loathsome tale. The Goal has been done to death by everyone, including Goldratt, and this book is a pale imitation of that classic novel. If you know absolutely nothing about MRP or ERP, then this book might be helpful. It does motivate the need for such systems and production controls in general. The book also has some screen shots of SAP's product, so at least you'll have some basic familiarity with that system before you see it on a workstation. I think I'd rather read the User's Guide to R/3 (or to my VCR) than read this book.
Why ERP? No, really, why ERP?.......2003-11-13
I wouldn't even make paper airplanes with this book - because they would suck too. When millions of books were burned in WWII, why did they miss this one?
Not a good read, pick up The Goal or Better Together instead.
This Book Sucks.......2003-11-13
Why ERP? Because I didn't have a choice as to read it or not. I'd rather take a bath in gasoline and light myself on fire than read this thing again.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing to read.......2003-07-25
It looks like ISO 14001 requirements + ISO 14001 comments + a few words of own opinion + some procedures from imaginary company (It seems they have never been at work). So If you have visited any ISO 14001 course, you don't need this book.
Best of Class in the ISO 14000 literature.......1999-07-06
This book is the current Best of Class within ISO 14000 literature. It is the next step in a progression from theory to practice. It describes individual sections of the ISO 14001 standard, explains the meaning in an integrated context, and demonstrates application through a fictitious company that is introduced early precisely for this purpose, Those who seek knowledge about ISO 14001 may select from a variety of excellent texts. Those who would apply it in the real world should buy this book first.
New ideas even for the experienced IS0 14001 practitioner.......1999-05-21
This authors have produced a book which should be helpful not only to the new ISO 14001 practitioner, but also to those who have years experience. The book provide ideas on how to develop an EMS which is not complicated, with examples of easy to read procedures for the core documentation of an EMS. The included GAP Analysis questions shall provide direction to those implementing their first/own EMS. Recommend reading for all.
Book Description
Business Processes: Operational Solutions for SAP Implementation deals with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems implementation, and also business operations/processes and information systems to support business operations/processes. There are a large number of books treating ERP implementation, operations management and information systems separately, but books dedicated to all three topics applied to practical issues of ERP implementation are scarce. However, teaching ERP merely as software does not work. Uniting these three topics in one book allows the reader to avoid the problems of teaching separate fields and then connecting them in one complex solution, providing the opportunity to better educate students.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Getting Certified.......2007-10-01
I bought this book for the sole purpose of passing this test. Well, I passed the test with using the practice tests and spending a lot of time with this book. I didn't buy any type of testing software that a lot of people are getting. I had bought the Sybex version before the Microsoft book, but it had too many mistakes. I also found the other book to cover a lot more than what you need for the certification. I have 9 years of SQL Server experience, but I was pretty worried about taking my first certification test. I think this book is perfect for preparing you for the test. In my opinion, the XML chapter could have been a lot smaller and then they could have expanded on the Mirroring chapter.
Good book.......2007-08-31
I used this book in addition to Tom Carpenter's 70-431 prep book and this is a good book. I feel that the book by Tom Carpenter is a better reference, but there is no question that both books will help prepare your for the exam. If I were you, I would use both books that way you will have the lite and sometimes detached coverage (you might say fact-based) that is in this book and the real-world type coverage that is in the McGraw-Hill book.
Not applicable to the exam as of August '07.......2007-08-26
I installed the evaluation edition of SQL Server that came with the book. Then I went through the book, read every page, did every sample test and more than half of the practice items (many were redundant).
Then I went to take the test and I was shocked. Many, many questions were not covered by the material in this book! I have a very good memory, and read the book while laid off so it only took me two weeks to get through it, so my memory is not the issue here. Microsoft produced a book and represents it's purpose as prep for the test, but it doesn't cover all the material the test does!
Most of the questions were covered so it is possible to pass from this book, but I couldn't.
One particularly galling question on the exam involved a port number that was not in the book, I checked.
Needless to say, I am disappointed. I hope that if I need another certification the kit is more representative of the exam content.
All Technical Books should be written like this.......2007-07-24
I'm only up to page 244 - but I got to say it's a very, very good book. Good size font. Easy to read, it just flows. Theory broken up into short lessons, followed by practice tasks.
I used to freak out at SQL Server 2005 software. Using this book has faded those fears away.
Fast shipping.......2007-07-17
I received the book in new condition with all the training CD's in about 4 days (save more than going buying local)

Customer Reviews:
Simply ISO 14001.......2000-01-20
This book is an invaluable asset in the EHS managers' quiver of reference tools. Ms Jackson presents what initially seems like a disjointed standard in terms that a layman can understand. Additionally, she adds insight and tips to guide even the seasoned veteran through the labyrinth of requirements that is ISO 14001. Graphics, examples and case studies are used throughout the book to impart to the reader a practical implementation scheme based on business case scenarios.
Excellent Reference for Creating an EMS.......1999-02-21
I would consider the book to be helpful to both the novice as well as the seasoned EMS Manager. The writers style makes the detailed subject readable and enjoyable. I look forward to seeing addtional books on this subject from Ms. Jackson.
