    Book Description

A Straightforward, No-Nonsense Guide to Building the Most Accurate, Complete, and Useful Data Models Possible. How do I know if my data model is accurate? When is a model really complete? Is it possible for a model to be both technically perfect and of no use to an organization, and what can I do to avoid that problem? This book provides answers to these and other crucial data modeling questions. While there are plenty of books that describe the characteristics of finished high-quality data models, only The Data Modeling Handbook gets down to the nitty-gritty of actually building one. Packed with real-world examples, annotated diagrams, and a wealth of rules and best practices, this field-tested guide provides experienced data modelers, architects, and engineers with hands-on guidance from two noted data management experts.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor choice for experienced modelers - just ok for beginners.......2004-05-14

This book oversimplifies the examples and expects a leap of faith to truly understand the information engineering technique of data modeling.

May be good in the class room; but in actual practice there are much better references available such as Silverston, Inmon, Kimball, and of course the Zachman framework.

1 out of 5 stars Very academic in nature, more theory than reality.......2004-02-05

Anyone that has been modeling very long will see this book for what it is ... after you look at it once, you'll put it on your bookshelf and leave it there. Save yourself the money ... There are much better reference books available. Try David Hay's book on patterns, or Len Silverston, or Graeme Simsion. Check out the DAMA reference guide .. at least it's built by actual practitioners.

The help screens on the Data modeling tools are more advanced in explaining data modeling than this book.

Probably great for theorists - managers or teachers that don't know what they are doing! But the real modelers will seek help elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading or, if you want, wrong.......2003-09-26

The authors deny the fifth normal form and state special-case rules as if they were universal. Examples: Eliminate triads; Two entities cannot have more than one relationship. Although in some specific situations the advice might be valid, anyone who is trying to learn from the reading will be misled. Less harmful, even interesting, for a professor (to learn how not to approach the teaching of DB modeling).

Poor, underdocumented examples. Oversimplification. Unfortunately at the time I had only the title to choose from. Good thing most books now have a table of contents.

Database modeling still doesn't have strong references as database theory does (Date's, Ramakrishnan's, Elmasri's only to cite three). There are excellent theoretical (Thalheim's "Entity-Relationship Modeling" is good) and philosophical approaches (finally they re-published Kent's opera-prima "Data and Reality", fabulous).

The picture is poor when it comes to hands-on modeling. Bruce's "Designing Quality Databases..." is an exception. Good and useful for someone who is developing modeling expertise. But I especially don't recommend Reingruber&Gregory's book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good one to start a good model.......2003-08-28

It is a very good book for a Data base designer and a data modeler. I strongly recommand this book to all database people.

2 out of 5 stars I'd rather visit the dentist.......2003-03-25

This book is about as much fun to read as a book about differential equations. Good concepts, but the context is very dry and puts me to sleep. I've been in the industry for several years, and I bought this book as a reference. But I find myself cringing every time I need to use it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For the Beginning Benchmarker.......2000-03-01

Bogan and English do a great job of introducing benchmarking, give great examples, and follow up with a nice set of "practice problems". They provide success stories and pitfalls to be avoided. Most importantly they give an excellent planning chapter for the company just beginning benchmarking. Great introduction to the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone implementing benchmarks.......1999-09-16

As a responsible management consultant, virtually every one of my engagements involves measurement and benchmarking in one form or another. This is one of several books I turn to time and again to assist me in ensuring that my clients' initiatives are (1) meeting expectations (2) providing competitive advantage and (3) delivering customer satisfaction. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me - adamleft@webspan.net.

    5 out of 5 stars Adopt a we-can-learn-from-anyone culture or else.......1997-01-09

Bogan and English have created a blueprint for creating this we-can-learn-from-anyone culture of benchmarking that is easy to read and use. They give literally hundreds of examples and suggestions for how to select benchmarking targets, organize for rapid learning, and implement these strategies. Learning by borrowing from the best and adapting their approaches makes sense. Buy this book before your competitors do

5 out of 5 stars The encyclopedia of restaurants management .......2007-10-09

If you know nothing, I mean nothing, about restaurants operations and management this book is for you.

Hi, my name is Raed Halaseh and I have been a professional Civil Engineer for the last 20 years. Six month ago I have decided to get into the hospitality business, namely the Franchise restaurants.

Purchasing Jack Ninemeier and David Hayes, Restaurant Operations and Management, Principles and Practices was the best thing that I have done to launching my Restaurant career.

I was amazed to how much knowledge I have acquired from reading this book. This became clear when I attended the mandatory managers training course, as part of becoming a Franchisee, as all topics introduced at the training course were covered in Ninemeier and Hayes Restaurant, Operations Management book.

If all goes well, I will have my first Restaurant Grand Opening on March 1st, 2008. It is true I will not have the hand-on experience, but armed with the information I have acquired from Ninemeier and Hayes Restaurant, Operations Management book will make operating and managing my first restaurant an exciting experience.

At the end, I would like to thank the authors for putting together such a wonderful, interesting, exciting and well arranged book that will be my best companion through the years as I operate and manage my restaurants.

      Best regards,
Yours in Restaurant business to be,
      Raed Halaseh

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding addition to the field of restaurant management .......2005-08-26

Ninemeier and Hayes' book does an excellent job of providing the detailed information managers need to profitably operate a restaurant, but does it in a very simple, highly readable manner. I believe students will find the book to be most enjoyable. As an Instructor, I really like the ease in which my students will learn and retain the information. I think it is absolutely the best text on the subject and its recent copyright means it is also the most up-to-date.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good but overpriced........2007-08-22

I recently purchased an international version of this book for considerably less than the price advertised on Amazon. For what I paid I consider it a good reference to have for SQA, but I still like Schulmeyer's Handbook of SQA which has a new edition coming out September 30 for $99. No disrespect intended, but the book seemed written by someone who was not a native speaker of English, so the wording can be a little difficult to follow.

3 out of 5 stars Expensive for nothing.......2007-04-07

The book quality is good the cover and papers are ok, the problem is the price with relation to the material inside.
The book is too expensive for what you get from it, there is many other books with the same subjects inside with less money.
This book can be useful if you are starting to learn the quality assurance.

      5 out of 5 stars Project Manager's Review.......2005-09-23

I recently had the pleasure in working with Mrs Godbole on a project in South Africa.
I was the project manager and she supported me in the role as a Senior QA Analyst.
After reading her book I was pleasantly surprised to see that she is actually putting into practice what she has documented in her book, Software Quality Assurance: Principles And Practice.
Chapter 4-Product Quality and Process Quality I found very interesting. As a project manager I have to manage the quality of product deliverables and at the same time this needs to be per a standard quality process.
This book is not a one time read for project managers.
I use this book every day in my day to day project management activity.
I recommend all project managers to not only read this book but to use it as an everyday project management tool.
I also set-up project management offices - I recently used this book to set-up the entire QA workstream within the organization.

5 out of 5 stars A truly classic reference material and easy reading.......2005-08-08

In my career as a practitioner implementing sound Software Quality Assurance principles, this book has come as a great boon.

The author has adequately reflected her thoughts into a real world of SQA with very fine illustration of the implementation aspects in the organization. The book should be a good reference to both students and practitioners who wish to understand the principles of software quality assurance and the challenges faced during successful implementation. Practitioners are likely to benefit more from the author's excellent illustration of examples and the discussion on the people issues in successful implementation of the Quality Management System in their organization.
Chapters that will be of interest to real world SQA include Chapter 2- Managing Software Quality in an organization (excellent expression of the organization's commitment to Quality, chapter 4-Product Quality and Process Quality, chapter 5 (A sound foundation for a metrics initiative), Chapter 7. Software Configuration Management (Pitfalls in SCM), Chapters 8 (ISO 9001 - especially the insights into ISO consulting and services!!), Chapter 10-Software testing (The V model for testing phases and test process improvement framework is indeed very interesting and informative) The best part of the book which I enjoyed most was chapter 11-Careers in Quality, in which the author has so aptly brought out the role of a mentor who can help carve a career in Quality. The author's clarity in documenting the different roles for Quality professionals is really commendable.
SQA as a discipline is difficult to implement and is more engineering focused than most disciplines in development and operations. In spite of these challenges, this book has been written to support Software Quality Assurance as an important component of software engineering activity and contains chapters that are specifically slanted towards that approach. Included are chapters on Walkthroughs and Inspections, Software Configuration Management, Software testing and Software measurement and metrics. The author also provides solid information on ISO Quality Assurance standards, SEI CMM, SEI CMMI, and PCMM, as well as on common practices followed at "Mature Organizations".
As a textbook the coverage of every facet of SQA from why and what, to testing, metrics and its role in organizations and projects are thoroughly covered. The fact that the material is up-to-date and truly reflects the real world makes this one a must read for college level courses and more so, it prepares students for roles as practitioners. It is a classic and earns a solid 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great information source for Software Quality Assurance.......2005-07-08

As someone who has worked in both software development and quality, I instantly connected with the quality practices and scenarios that the author describes about the role of quality in most software development organizations. It states the challenges faced by SQA teams in implementing quality practices, especially in terms of people issues and the approach that may be taken to overcome them. This book provides insight into the SQA function and role, its importance and the commitment required to make it effective. I liked this part, as there are few books that stress on the crucial role played by the SQA in a company committed to quality.
I found the section on measurement and metrics with metrics and formulae that can be used through the SDLC. There are other books that provide in depth treatment on metrics, but the content here is useful because of its timing and context and it works well as a ready reference. The author has explained a number of international quality models like ISO and CMM along with their comparative study and mapped them to the various phases in the SDLC wherever possible. There are books available that dwell on a single quality model, but few go beyond more than a one page tabular comparison. I have found that quality professionals have to often struggle to map between multiple models to aggregate information at an organizational level when projects execute using models most appropriate to them.
The chapter that I enjoyed reading most was "Careers in Quality". This chapter is informative for IT professionals who aspire to move into the quality arena. It outlines the various opportunities available and the paths that may be taken to achieve them. The author has also explained the importance of a mentor and the qualities one should look for in a mentor who can help shape one's career. There are few places where one finds information on how one can make a complete career transition to quality, mentors and the various certifications that can be obtained for faster and focused growth.
Throughout this book, the author has explained concepts like process life cycle and inspection walkthroughs using diagrams, making them easy to understand. A number of sample documents (Quality Assurance Plan) and checklists (Configuration Audit) are available which can be used as a starting point by SQAs in their organizations.

On the whole a good read and informative. Recommended book to have.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Reference Book for Primary Care Practice Management.......2007-04-08

Buppert's book reflects her unique background, which combines both legal and medical training. A practicing attorney and a primary care nurse practitioner, Buppert wrote a comprehensive book for primary care practice management, including medical reimbursement, coding, billing, compliance, managed care contracts, audits, malpractice, and effective management. Her book is especially useful because it combines legal advice with practical negotiation guidelines and includes essential references, sample forms, user-friendly templates, and monitoring measures. Buppert's approach is pragmatic and her writing is crystal clear.

3 out of 5 stars Primary Care Provider (Buppert) Review.......2007-02-24

I find this book very informative, a little dry for everyday reading but useful for me in my NP classes.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Book You Need.......2006-06-02

I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply and equipment business. I would with a number of physician groups. I agree with the previous reviewer that this is an essential book for all medical service providers in private practice. So many physician groups fail to collect all the fees they can because they don't have a full understanding of proper coding and billing. And, many lawsuits could be avoided and/or minimized with proper documentation. And, of coure, as any medical malpractice attorney will tell you, the best way to avoid getting sued in the first place is to communicate, clearly and frequently, with your patients. This is the kind of information they don't teach in medical school but every physician needs to know. Successful medical practices today require so much more than just quality medical care. This books helps you figure out how to do all the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Practice.......2000-07-03

Buppert's new book is truly exceptional. She weaves together the changing worlds of health care, business, law, research, and academia in a very practical way. She has created an irreplaceable resource for any and all of you nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician's assistants who desire to strengthen your primary care practice, or to develop a practice from scratch.

Buppert, an active attorney and primary care nurse practitioner, states in the preface that her book explains: · How to get paid the maximum appropriate reimbursement while complying with new federal coding and billing guidelines · How to negotiate managed care contracts · How to shine on managed care quality audits · How to monitor and improve medical outcomes at the practice level · How to avoid malpractice · How to save time while accomplishing all of the above.

Her book lives up to its promise by compiling many essential guidelines and references in one location. It includes both the private managed care HEDIS measures, benchmarks, and national track record and the public U.S. Bureau of Public Health's "Put Prevention Into Practice" health guides. It provides sample forms for following patients with chronic diseases; systems and measures to track patient satisfaction and functional status; and systems to aid compliance with Medicare and other payer's billing codes. In addition, it gives proactive legal advice on self-monitoring of documentation in order to avoid both malpractice and billing fraud liability. And, beyond this valuable information, is a chapter full of practical advice on setting up contracts with managed care organizations.

For those of us with an academic bent, additional references on quality assessment and improvement ("performance measurement") will add to the solid foundation this book provides. Clinicians attentive to measuring outcomes of care will be well-served by the clear instructions and easy-to-use templates in the book.

Buppert, in her legal practice, has for many years promoted fair contracts between primary care providers and managed care organizations. Her advice in this book is based on real-life experience and negotiation on behalf of nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician's assistants. You would pay more for one hour of an attorney's time than you will for this exceedingly helpful book!

        Book Description

In Productive Workplaces Revisited, Marvin Weisbord takes the next step in exploring effective strategies for improving workplace productivity  through dignity, meaning, and community. Remarkably, in this new edition the author revisits the case studies from the first edition, Productive Workplaces, to show the long-term effects of OD interventions -- twenty-plus years after the fact and provides invaluable insights for practitioner and student alike. In five new chapters, Weisbord reinterprets his systems work in health care and steel-making, describes how “future search,” his method for “getting everybody improving whole systems,” has crossed cultures on five continents, and summarizes his learning from following up cases decades later. This edition also presents in-depth case studies of organizations that have used these techniques to increase output, cut costs, create strategic plans, manage conflict between functions, and more.

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-16

I received my book in a timely fashion, so I'm very pleased with my purchase.

        1 out of 5 stars Not Relevant.......2007-01-06

I only read the first 9 chapters. The first one was good. The second 8 were not - a relatively boring version of the history of management. Try reading other sections of the book if you want to get something out of it.

        5 out of 5 stars Best in it's class.......2006-08-02

This is my all-time favorite book on the history and philosophy of Organization Development. I recommend it to every person who comes to me for an informational interview and it's required reading for all staff and interns at our consulting firm, Community At Work.

5 out of 5 stars Productive Workplaces Revisited.......2005-11-20

This was one of the first books I've read on Organization Development. After reading a multitude of OD books since it is still the only one that I enjoyed and found useful information in an easy to use format from cover to cover. I still reference it today.
