solid handbook.......2007-07-19
this is a solid, almost academic, handbook. it's points you toward the things you need to figure out but you'll still need to get additional information on your local regulations. personnaly, it discouraged me from opening a buisness at this time.
Outstanding book!.......2007-03-15
This book is very detailed and to the point. It covers all areas of the restaurant business. Then menu planning section is great. It gives so much foresight.
2004 Writers Notes Book Award Winner.......2005-05-18
The Restaurant Manager's Handbook is a no-nonsense, coverall manual for the food establishment industry. It's the essence of a successful handbook-no jokes, parables, and preachy lectures, just the facts. If you delve into the heal-thy index for fault, you'll abruptly bump into a page number for an answer, and if you're currently running a restaurant and afraid to appear inadequate, you can load the handy CD-ROM and pretend you're checking your e-mail while figur-ing out the monthly audit procedures or why the beer is flat. I'm not kidding. The next time your favorite kitchen runs short of the daily special or closes down for a lack of permit, serve them a copy of this great reference book.
Superb!!.......2003-10-01
The books nineteen chapters cover the entire process of a restaurant start-up and ongoing management. The companion CD rom which contains all the forms is worth the modest price of the book alone. I would highly recomend this book to anyone in the industry now or who wants to get started with sound financial planning. Also the extensive resource guide in the back of the book is superb - we will use this book often.

This book will help reduce and even eliminate waste in your organization. It's worth trying. It makes manufacturing processes to flow better and brings quality improvement to the work place. Very tiny book.......2007-05-10
Very tiny book. I was not expecting such a small book. Very expensive item for its size.
Book arrived with a grease stain on the cover!
Handy Reference, Perfect for Training Seminar.......2007-01-13
If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thanks.
The Lean Manufacturing Handbook.......2007-01-09
I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.
Lean .......2006-08-28
Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.
Book Description
Like its predecessors, this introductory text teaches students the fundamental concepts of healthcare finance, including both financial management and accounting. It was developed to be used in clinical and health services administration programs, in which students are primarily trained for careers in provider organizations.
New to the third edition are coverage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the impact of cost structure on risk, a revised approach to variance analysis, and revenue.
Customer Reviews:
Could be greatly improved.......2007-10-08
The problem with this book is it is written too much like a book and not like a textbook. It is nearly impossible to find the equations that are embedded in the text if you are trying to do a quick reference on a concept. In addition, the index is horrible which leaves me constantly googling concepts that I need for the case studies since you can never find them in the book. Also, I'm not really sure how the book distinguishes itself as "health care" there is little to no health care specifics as far as finance goes. In all reality it isn't a great book especially if it is for your first finance class and you're better off looking up academic journals for a the health care finance perspective.
Cram 101.......2007-05-30
This purchase was to help me with my course and go hand in hand with the engimatic book. However, it hit highlights but was not helpful to me in question answers and reviews for test. If you want a book with definiton's to help you , this is a 5 . If you want help with the Gapenski engima , its a 1.
Straight to the point and practical.......2007-02-07
Very good textbook: gives you all the necessary foundations for understanding the financial issues in healthcare.
A Great Intro Into Health Care Finance.......2000-12-01
As stated in the preface of the book, the goal of the book, "was to create a text that introduces students to the most important principles and applications of healthcare finance..." This book was an excellent introduction into finance. Not only did it explain accounting and financial terms and theories, it uses excellent examples of real life health care situations to further the reader's understanding of the topics. This was my first time exposed to finance of any type. At the end of the book, I felt like I had a firm understanding of the basics. Excellent book for beginners.
Superb textbook.......2000-11-30
As a cardiologist, I have used many textbooks over the years. I am now a hospital's Chief Medical Officer and am enrolled in an MHA program. Dr. Gapenski's book is one of the best-written textbooks I have ever used. It clearly and consisely discusses financial concepts as they apply to healthcare. He has the ability to make the most complex concepts easily understood.

Customer Reviews:
AN EXCELLENT TEXTBOOK.......2007-10-10
All essential topics in financial management and definations of professional terms can be found in this nice book. To strengthen the readers' knowledge on financial management, the authors provided many examples for discussion and explanation; and also asked some key questions at the end of each Chapter. So interesting!! This textook is very useful for new learners of health care financial management.
Highly recommended.......2005-03-28
A very comprehensive and informative book, even though the examples are for the US it can be used and applied to other countries and systems. Gives a good grounding for financial understanding of healthcare entities. Highly recommend it to anyone looking interested in financial managment of health care organizations
Right to the point!.......2004-03-28
I found it very consice, and at the same time understandable with lots of examples, and practical. It is very well customized for health care organizations. It's worth your time and your money!
Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations.......2003-05-16
This text proved an invaluable guide to the subject of hospital finances. This was a subject I was not particularly interested in, and the book surprised me. It is readable and clear. The logic flows smoothly. There are plenty of examples, illustrating assorted principles. After reading several books on the topic of hospital finances, this one stands out for its clarity.
Book Description
Written in the same nontechnical and succinct approach as the previous editions, this book introduces nonfinancial managers to the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to manage cost effectively. Concise appendices review the key concepts in economics, accounting, and statistics for professionals without prerequisite knowledge. New material on the following topics:
The financial impact of patient safety
The public's concern about accounting integrity and healthcare's response
The financial implications of the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and
Modernization Act
The need for entitlement reform
The most recent projections on the financial status of the healthcare industry
The costs associated with uncompensated care and how those costs are either shifted to payers or absorbed in the facility's budget
Customer Reviews:
Two sides of a hospital coin........2005-10-30
When you're dealing with hospital finances it's true that you're dealing with a real two-headed sword. On the one sword, you have patient satisfaction to deal with. But on the other we all want to make money. It's why they're called "finances." This book explains all that and more, but from a patient's point of view this book is a flat one. Except for oncology departments, which is where this book sometimes has a heart. And not just a heart for money.
Professor review of book.......2000-10-23
Great book for the first course in a graduate health administration program where no prerequites are required. There is a workbook for the textbook to help verify understanding of concepts and principles. I would order it as well.
The book is also appropriate for health professionals who have been promoted into management positions and now need work with financial information.
Book Description
This fifth edition of the classic text, Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations, introduces strategic thinking, strategic planning, and strategic momentum to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as practitioners in the field of health care. It demonstrates how strategic managers can become strategic thinkers with the crucial skills to evaluate the changing environment, analyze data, question assumptions, and develop new ideas.Swayne, Duncan, and Ginter present methods to develop and document a plan of action through strategic planning and illustrate how, as managers attempt to carry out the strategic plan, they evaluate its success, learn more about what works, and incorporate new strategic thinking into future planning, strategy formulation, and situational analysis. They demonstrate how strategic management "maps " can provide the direction needed for successful implementation. In this new edition, all chapters have been revised and contain new or updated Introductory Incidents and Perspectives. Appendix A has been revised to match the new model of strategic thinking, planning, and managing the strategic momentum. Twenty real-life case studies, including nine new cases and three updated classics, present diverse strategic situations in an accessible manner that enhances the applicability of the concepts for students and professionals. The text is supported by PowerPoint slides and an Instructors ' Manual. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/swayne for details.
Customer Reviews:
Both conceptual and practical tools.......2007-04-11
This is an outstanding book. While naturally oriented to strategic management of health care it is also a comprehensive framework to strategic management in general. The book's layout is that of a university textbook but it is also written in an enjoyable style. I read this book as a practitioner and not a formal student and found it extremely readable and helpful. The authors present both conceptual and practical tools for strategic management.
Excellent book.......2006-12-14
I would highly recommend this book. It is easy to read, methodical in approach and provides a balance of relevant theory and application. A useful resource for any healthcare organization expanding its services within existin country or beyond.
Thanks extended to the authors...I look forward to other additions!!!
Excellent Book.......2004-03-03
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail. I continue to use the book as a resource. I am currently a hospital CEO.
Great balance of theory and practice.......2001-11-29
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.
A Must for the Novice Planner.......2000-07-27
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides the fundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health care organization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of real examples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest in strategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcare industry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by the purchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstanding authors in person during graduate study/research.

five functions plus two.......2007-04-05
I use this when I teach the senior level management course in a school of nursing. there will be a new edition in fall 2007.
The typical challenge faced by teachers of this content at this level is that when the stduents are in their very last semester, they need to "keep it real" and stay motivated to learn the content which may seem abstract at times. Most will not be going into management but they do need to know how a manager will think, because each of them will have to deal with a manager very soon. I think this book conveys the material as well as any. Not to fluffy not too in-depth.
Covers the usual "five functions of management" ( staffing, directing, controlling, planning, organizing) and adds chapter four on the topic of decision-making as well. aslo include a description of bureaucratic imperialism, which in my view is a key concept for those seeking a deeper level of ability to predict organizational behavior.
Good Management college level book.......2007-03-01
I bought this book for my Health Care Management Class for college, and I think this is a good source. The readings are so complete that they are a little too hard for me, but it covers all the possible job-related experiences.
Management Principles for Health Professionals.......2004-05-02
The forth edition of Management Principles for Health Professionals has three parts and 15 chapters. Part one has two chapters about the health professional's modern arena. Part two has five chapters about management functions-planning, decision making, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Part three has eight chapters about practical considerations for keeping the department running smoothly-budgeting; committees and teams; adaptation, innovation, and conflict management; training and development; authority, leadership, and supervision; human resource management; communication; and day-to-day management. Each chapter starts with chapter objectives and ends with exercises, notes, and appendix. There are exhibits throughout the book including but not limited to: mission, vision, values statement, philosophy, objectives, procedure, strategic plan, scheduling by shifts, guidelines for use of contractual services, job descriptions, process for written request for release of information, control tools, annual budget plan, worksheets for budgeting, calculating FTE, worksheet for comparison of storage options, follow up of committee actions, monitoring and evaluation of standards, quality assurance report, program evaluation, written warning and grievance procedure. Tables, figures, and cases are used throughout to help clarify concepts. The book ends with a index. This book is useful for nursing student, practicing nurse managers and other health professionals.

For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.
It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.
I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .
Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.
Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03
This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.
