    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great discussion of what is really a side topic to Balanced Scorecards.......2006-11-10

Balanced Scorecards make lots of sense for the For-Profit world for which they were originally developed. What makes this book so good is that they have concentrated on what makes Non-Profits different and how to conceptualize how the BC works in that arena. The book is well written and easy to understand. It is a must for all non-profit execs.

5 out of 5 stars Church Ministry Aid.......2006-11-10

Very helpful approach in developing a measuring tool for monitoring ministry growth and tracking to Vision.

    5 out of 5 stars A book for the 21st century.......2003-09-20

Niven is one of the best authors on BSC. If this administration and communications tool has been hailed as one the best new concepts in the business world, in nonprofit and government administration it can have even more impact. It is a great general introduction, but even seasoned experts will find enlightenment and a great very updated bibliography. Works very well as a textbook for nonprofit management with HBS cases.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, informative and highly implementable advice.......2003-08-24

Although the Balanced Scorecard has taken over performance mangagement thinking in business, its linkages and adaptability to public and non-profit organizations has remained extremely challenging. I currently am resposible for leading planning and strategy development for a large social services provider in Canada. Being a strong proponent of Balanced Scorecard theory, I anxiously waited two months for Paul Niven's latest book to hit the shelves in hope that I could adapt the balanced scorecard approach to evaluate our organization's strategy. Long story short >> Balanced Scorecard for Government and Nonprofit Agencies was an incredible investment, and we are now on the way to better measuring and reporting on our organization's progress with the help of this book's advice, tips and proecess design steps.

Paul Niven's writing style provides a clear and informative description of the balanced scorecard approach to performance planning and measurement - and presents easy-to-follow steps for designing and implementing performance systems to monitor and evaluate the impact of nonprofit and public sector programs. I highly recommend this easy-to-read book to anyone interested in understanding how the world's leading approach to performance measurement and management can be successfully incorporated into your organization.

4 out of 5 stars Good & Practical Book on Balanced Scorecard.......2003-07-07

I've read most of the literature on the Balanced Scorecard and the previous books by Norton & Kaplan and Paul Niven himself. Being a Management Consultant of 15 years, I worked with numerous for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and have the usual skepticism towards theory books. This latest book on Balanced Scorecard was easy-to-read with numerous examples from Balanced Scorecard implementations in public sector. I found the step-by-step approach to be practical and quite down-to-earth with numerous take aways for a reader interested in BSC or a performance management practitioner, like myself. The book rightly touches upon the challenges in the scorecard implementations, and offers valuable advice. If you haven't read any previous books on this subject, you can read this book alone for a good idea on what the Balanced Scorecard is all about, and how you go about its implementation.

This is a must for every accounts dept. It gives you a fresh and concise look at developing your accounts dept and company as a whole.
Lots of ideas to think about, easy to read and understand. Even step by step lists that you can follow.
I would recommend this book to anyone from a trainee accoutant to FCO's it throws out the old way of looking at things and brings in a new and exciting way of thinking about the bigger picture.
As accountants we are very happy to plod along with our wonderful spreadsheets, this helps you look at better ways of working.

5 out of 5 stars Everything it promised to be.......2007-07-24

It promised key performance indicators and it actually provided them. Easy to read, good format.

3 out of 5 stars KPI Usability Review.......2007-07-05

I found this book to be reasonably helpful. There are lists and lists of key performance indicators in the back of the book. There was one story in particular (won't give it away for all of you who want the book) that was particularly good and I have started sharing that example in my work (Six Sigma). All in all, I think I am looking for more of the "how to do it," which I found this book to be a little light on. . . . . .

4 out of 5 stars A rational methodology to implement KPIs.......2007-07-03

The main purpose of this book is to be a practical methodology to implement KPIs, and it does this reasonably well.

I would say that many recommendations throughout the book will be of good use, although there are several concepts that are applicable in a cultural environment that is more common to multinational companies or very large local companies.

The best chapter of this book is the first, where David Parmenter discusses the concept of a KPI, from a practical point of view. He divides indicators in three basic types, that makes sense and help understand them :
. KRI - Key Results Indicator
    . PI - Performance Indicator
. KPI - Key Performance Indicator

In this chapter, he emphasizes the fact that KPIs are just the few main indicators that management of a business must identify, so that they focus on the right things... Something to remember all the time when you are implementing BSCs, Dashboards and the like.

The proposed approach behind this methodology is a practical one. It is for those that want faster results. The final phrase of the book could be: "roll up your sleeves and put KPIs to work as fast as you can".

5 out of 5 stars Great Framework for Developing and Implementing KPI's.......2007-04-10

This was a very easy concise yet comprehensive framework and structure for developing and implementing KPI's. It distinguishes true KPI's from performance indicators or results indicators which people gravitate to as they think they are KPI's. This laid out a logical framework to follow. It is an easy read and provides many checklists as well as sample KPI's.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Insightful material on Performance Dashboards.......2007-07-18

Overall this is a great book, which is extremely well presented... A key point to take home is, that dashboards are not just fancy displays with graphs/ RYG lights, but a set of applications to monitor, measure and manage business performance, with a solid business intelligence and integration infrastructure.... Also, author's point of views on different types of dashboards (strategic, tactical and operational), and the types of audience for each of these types, and their analysis requirements were very insightful.. This coupled with BI maturity model that the author presents, is an invaluable guide for organizations to assess their current state, and provide the roadmap for thier performance management needs... Three detailed case studies have been presented to explain three types of dashboards.

A lot of tricks and tips throughout the book... Strongly recommend this book...

    5 out of 5 stars Quo vadis?.......2007-04-12

For purposes of discussion, pretend that your organization is a vehicle within which you and your associates travel en route to a series of destinations; for example, various stages of progressively improved operational efficiency and progressively increased profitability. One key question arises: How well is your vehicle performing?

The three "dashboards" (i.e. operational, tactical, and strategic) that Wayne Eckerson offers in this volume can help to answer that question. "The monitoring application conveys critical information at a glance using timely and relevant data, usually with graphical elements; the analysis application lets users analyze and explore performance data across multiple dimensions and at different levels of detail to get at the root cause of problems and issues; the management application fosters communication among executives, managers, and staff and gives executives continuous feedback across a range of critical activities, enabling them to `steer' their organizations in the right direction."

The ultimate success of the cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system which Eckerson discusses in this book depends on several factors: sufficient leadership and resources at all levels of implementation, correct and consistent application of the right metrics, a compelling graphical user interface, and contingency planning which ensures user adoption while driving the organizational changes.

I especially appreciate Eckerson's provision of three mini case studies that illustrate how -- in real-world situations - the three performance "dashboards" can achieve the desired objectives. Specifically, those that are operational (Quicken Loans, Inc., pages 127-141), those which are tactical (International Truck and Engine Corp., pages 143-158), and those which are strategic (Hewlett Packard Co., pages 159-177). I also appreciate the material provided in Part Three (Critical Success Factors: Tips from the Trenches) as Eckerson correlates various multilayered applications built on business intelligence and data integration infrastructure that enables any organization (regardless of size or nature) to measure, monitor, and manage business performance more effectively.

All executives recognize the importance of accurate and consistent measurement of what really matters. Obviously, the "what" varies (sometimes significantly) from one organization to another. In my opinion, the three performance "dashboards" that Eckerson recommends can be of substantial benefit, whatever the given "what" may be but if - and only if - the aforementioned success factors are present. To repeat, they are: sufficient leadership and resources at all levels of implementation, correct and consistent application of the right metrics, a compelling graphical user interface, and contingency planning which ensures user adoption while driving the organizational changes.

This book is by no means an "easy read" but it will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate care. Then what? He fully understands how difficult it is to ensure adoption by others, and, to manage performance effectively throughout the given enterprise. In the final chapter, Eckerson notes that performance dashboards can easily backfire and cause performance to decline or stall instead of climb. He then identifies what he characterizes as eight cardinal sins " that can turn a performance dashboard into a performance quagmire." How to avoid them? Eckerson offers nine strategies to ensure adoption and eight strategies to manage performance.

I highly recommend this brilliant book as well as Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement. Both are eminently worthy of thoughtful and rigorous consideration. However, that said, I also offer a caveat expressed by Peter Drucker in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Invoking again the "vehicle" metaphor introduced in the first paragraph of this brief commentary, I presume to suggest that if you and your companions don't know where you are going, "any road will get you there."

    2 out of 5 stars Performance Dashboards.......2007-01-10

The first two-thirds of the book were extremely disappointing and added very little value to the understanding of how to create effective dashboards. Instead, the author spent far too much time discussing IT concepts and buzzwords such as datamarts, multidimensional databases, operational data stores and OLAP tools. Much of the book reads as a platform for why one needs to invest in IT to help manage your business performance. It wasn't until the final third of the book that some useful concepts were explored regarding how a non-IT person should go about developing a solid performance dashboard.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for keen Performance Management specialists and Managers.......2007-01-10

The book delivered exactly what I have expected from it. It provides clear picture about how Performance Dashboards work. It is very well structured, blends theory with experience and targets keen developers and users.

When I purchased the book, I was asked to put forward a proposal for a comprehensive Performance Management system. I really benefited from the systematic approach used to build such system.

It recommend it for anyone who is implementing performance management system, or even business process management systems which also provides performance dashboards of the automated processes.

4 out of 5 stars Best Description Yet of Dashboard Goals and Structure.......2007-01-09

This is the first book that I have read that gives a good overview of how and why you would use a dashboard. It has a good flow and give you information you can use. It is a little dry, but it is hard to make this too exciting.

5 out of 5 stars What is LEAN SIX SIGMA?.......2007-06-11

Excellent Lean Six Sigma overview book - suitable to hand out during Yellow Belt or Green Belt Training as a support to the participants. As a Certified Black Belt, I can confirm the material is correct (for the experts) & can be understood (for the folk new to LSS).

5 out of 5 stars An accelerated explanation of how to produce more and better results, in less time, and at a lower cost .......2007-05-16

It seems eminently appropriate that a book which explains what Lean Six Sigma is (and isn't) should exemplify the same principles it addresses: It delights its reader with the speed by which its material is covered and with the quality of that material, it offers immediate help with mastering whatever the given process (or processes) may be, its authors work effectively with their reader to achieve the desired objectives within that reader's organization, and they prepare their reader to make better decisions, based on verifiable data.

Many people who consider purchasing it may be deterred by terms such Six Sigma and Lean which tend to be associated only with immensely large and complicated organizations such as GE and Motorola. In fact, authors Mike George, Dave Rowlands, and Bill Kastle include a number of mini-case studies throughout their narrative that suggest how decision-makers in almost any organization (regardless of size or nature) can apply Lean Six Sigma to produce more and better results, in less time, and at a lower cost if (huge "if") there are leadership at the top of the given organization, buy-in and sustained commitment at all levels and in all areas, sufficient resources, and accurate and consistent performance measurement.

For me, some of the most valuable material is provided in Chapter 8, "Making Improvements That Last." After explaining the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process, the authors make skillful use of various "Figures" that serve two separate but related purposes: they highlight key points, and, they facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of those points later. For example, Figure 8.1: Sample Project Charter that demonstrates how to capture the essence of a Lean Six Sigma project. It describes what the team should accomplish, who will work on the project (and in what roles), timelines and other key information. Then with Figure 8.3: Value Stream Map, the authors indicate with the example provided how the value stream map, based on an actual process, captures the main sequence of activities in the boxes across the top line. If executed with rigor and discipline, the DMAIC process offers a framework for effective collaboration that will reveal real solutions to root problems.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones's Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation and their more recent book, Lean Solutions: How Companies and Customers Can Create Value and Wealth Together. Also, Michael George's Lean Six Sigma for Service: How to Use Lean Speed and Six Sigma Quality to Improve Services and Transactions, The Lean Six Sigma Pocket Toolbook: A Quick Reference Guide to 100 Tools for Improving Quality and Speed (with John Maxey and David T. Rowlands) and Fast Innovation: Achieving Superior Differentiation, Speed to Market, and Increased Profitability (with James Works, and Kimberly Watson-Hemphill).

5 out of 5 stars Results Rule!: Build a Culture That Blows the Competition Away.......2007-01-15

Very no-nonsense book for those who are accountable for making things happen in the organization. Very direct and to the point advice. A quick, must read for all executives.

5 out of 5 stars Why there are so many unsuccessful companies........2006-08-24

The thing that I liked best about this book was it's emphasis on employees. It's employees that make the business work. The Fortune 1 company is Wal-Mart. I know a lot of people who say they won't shop at Wal-Mart because of their policies towards women, they don't pay enough, their health insurance is poor, or whatever. I hear all kinds of stories about big law suits against the company. I also know a lot of people who work at the local Wal-Mart. I ask them and they universally reply, 'best job I ever had, best company I ever worked for.' I bought some tires there (30% less than the tire company across the street). A month later I saw the lady that sold me the tires in the supermarket. She asked how the tires were doing.

That's the kind of culture that this book is talking about. Wal-Mart has it, UPS has it - not the same but a good culture, Southwest Airlines has it. The Post Office, you gotta be kidding.

No two companies are going to build the same culture. You have to develop your own that works for you. This book mostly talks about how a series of companies have built a culture that works for them.

5 out of 5 stars Right on Target.......2006-06-30

I have worked with many companies who do all the regular management tricks (TQM, lean, reward results, etc.) well and still find themselves falling behind relative to today's global competitors. Pennington is right on target with his advice that culture is the most influential driver of behavior, and the only one that can encourage and support corporate innovation. He has many excellent examples, including non-profits and government, and he incorporates practical principles that apply to the kind of culture needed for both higher performance and innovation. My only disappointment is that his advice is mostly in the form of basic principles, and I believe many managers will have a difficult time knowing how to apply those principles to transform their organizations. Still, there is precious little practical material on this important topic out there--despite the huge numbers of business books released every year. Thus, in this new "flat" world, where all companies need to be innovative to sustain competitive advantage, this book stands above the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Great, practical advice!.......2006-05-31

Entertaining and easy to read with priceless information. This book is a must read for people in organizations of any size.

4 out of 5 stars Results Rule! Build a culture that blows away the competition.......2006-05-16

This book is built around a unique vision of high-performing organizations. It is easy to read and has lots of managerial prescriptions for the professional practitionier. His use of vivid examples of "heros" who created powerful cultures in their own firms is eye-opening.
