Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.

I required this book for a class i was taking. Overall this is one of the worst text books i have ever used. The book is filled with somewhat technical and complex information regarding MPC, yet fails to provide topical examples illustrating the principles and theories behind the information. The only reason to ever buy a book this overpriced and disobliging is for a class.

This book is terrible and most of my classmates concur. For example chapter 5 alludes to certain statistical methods and in essence completely butchers them. As a student I had to use several other resources to pass my classes as this text is useless. If you are an instructor select something else.

This is a must have in any business library. The material is applicable in many useful areas throughout the supply chain. It's enjoyable to read b/c you keep thinking of how to apply the theories introduced in the book in your work. This is absolutely a treasure in your library.

Even if it is taken as the popular textbook for MPC, I'd rather read the another one: "Introduction to the materials management" by Arnold and Chapman. I can not easily catch the points and feel muddled after reading long sections and words in this book. However, the examples and case studies here are worthy to have a big picture for those who are new in this field.

VSM books shows interesting process to apply modern control thinking to production. However, clear products standardisation & determination process could be necessary before methods can be applied as well as possible.
Discussed waste elimination is generally nice approach. Waste elimination possibilities in organisations should to be evaluated with this book and more generally at lean bibliography, because elimination of waste helps almost everybody. :)

This book gave me great insight to re-initialized our lean efforts. We have been so busy and got caught up in the value stream mapping craze and kaizen events, but little impact. This book did a superb job in laying out the eight steps, with all the forms, templates necessary to ensure sustainable results. Great work by the authors!

Marred by confusion in thinking and presentation.......2007-06-09
This book has a good mission and scope, and the prose is clear and straightforward. The thinking underneath the prose is, unfortunately, often confused. It's as if the paragraphs were competently edited, but not the chapters or major arguments. "There are three kinds of companies," says page 20; on page 59 there are again three kinds of companies, and the categorization is sorta-almost the same. Five minutes of scrutiny finally reveals the two comparison-sets are not congruent. This is strange and unsatisfactory, because making them so would have been easy and certainly would serve the reader better.
The book sometimes balks at simple realities. "One kind of company" already has ERP software installed and hasn't gotten the hoped-for return, and people are frustrated. The solution is to re-implement, and "the good news is that having the software already installed certainly makes life easier in some important respects ... The bulk of the software has already been selected." But what if the software was poorly chosen and won't do the job? That's the situation I face, and none of the three categories deals with this not uncommon scenario.
That's from the chapter titled "Software," which has other problems. There are some good ideas; don't get the module organization of a software package confused with your real organizational units, for example. But there's no clear general orientation to the software issues, not much for creating meaningful comparisons between products, no acknowledgment that fraudulent marketing is a real danger or that seemingly universal terms can carry very different meanings simply by their contextual scope.
My disappointment with the book increased sharply during the instructions for ROI assessment. The presentation of concepts was muddled, but I persevered and hammered out a complete ROI document. I'm a database builder, not a money analyst or manager, and I was proud of the result when I sent it off to the owners. It's now a few weeks later and I am halfway through 'The Goal' by E. Goldratt. And my ROI is false, I realize, because this ERP book fails to help the reader convert "better efficiency" into dollars returned. An improvement belongs on the ROI if dollars are returned. That means for a reduction in costs for non-production labor (for example), you have to say which salaried workers will no longer work at the company. I rewrote my ROI. I said what positions could go (including my own), but the grounding-to-earth also forced me into a lower percentage for benefits. It was the same for improvements in gross revenue. On that point the ERP book even fails to point out that a gain in gross sales is not to be interpreted as a gain in profit. Now if I were any kind of analyst, I wouldn't have been fooled; but I don't think the book should go out of its way to cloud up the core issues, and that's what this one does. I'm just glad I sent a corrected ROI (and still with an exciting return) before the owners themselves had to point out my incompetence.
I won't get fooled again. A second ERP primer text is coming my way.
Complete focus on what's important: processes and management.......2002-07-03
If you're exploring an enterprise-wide solution, even if it isn't an ERP package, or are planning an implementation after the software has already been selected this book will prove invaluable. Unlike other books about ERP (and e-business and enterprise application integration for that matter), this one is focused on the business processes and what it takes to prepare for and manage the implementation.
Of course, while much of this book applies at a high level to any enterprise application, it is all about ERP. The authors take great pains to avoid talking about software, which in itself is refreshing. They also skillfully guide you through a panorama of key issues, including what ERP is and how it fits into the overall scheme of business value and competitiveness. However, the best part of this book is their implementation strategy, which explores how an ERP package is going to require changes at the business process level, how to break down the implementation into manageable stages. In this respect the book is a combination of a management overview of ERP, organizational change strategies, and project management approach to implementation.
The key areas addressed by this book reflect reality. For example, all of the major challenges that you're likely to face are addressed. The critical success factors, such as training, preparing the organization for the system (from a people perspective), and the way the implementation phases are sequenced can either be learned from this book, or learned the hard way (which is sure to include schedule and cost overruns at best and a disaster at worst). In particular, the process-oriented approach that is reiterated throughout the book needs to be heeded. This is the essence of any ERP package, and it will change your organization. This book gives good advice on how to effect the shift from discrete jobs and procedures to a workflow.
In addition to this excellent book I highly recommend two other resources: (1) "Scorecard System For World Class Enterprise Resource Management" by Travis Anderegg, which is a unique book/online survey combination you can use to evaluate the alignment of your ERP system to business processes, and (2) "Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: Systems, Life Cycle, Electronic Commerce, and Risk" by Daniel Edmund O'Leary. O'Leary's book completely complements this one and fills in a few gaps.

A Sturdy Reference Manual........1999-11-19
One of the best, if now the only, Reference manuals specifically written and aimed towards the practice of the wide field of industrial engineering. Within this massive 'CODEX' an IE can find information covering almost evey area in the vast field. Not meant as an introduction to the field, I however highly recomend it for the practicing members of our field.

I've got to improve a production assembly line and we are applying for the cellular manufacturing.
Since I hadn't have a knowledge for that, I purchased this book to learn how to apply and what to do.

This is an excellent tutorial guide to "one-piece flow" concept. For that purpose it is excellent. In its quest for ideological purity, it fails to consider the more difficult (and useful) problem of "optimal lot size", typical real world manufacturing processes. Had the authors put in a short chapter on that issue, I would have given it five stars.

Questions for the executive team that merit concern: What about inventory? If a plant is schedule to build a 100 unit but 140 appear will there be enough inventory to satisify the unexpected demand? In the reverse, when demand fails should the plant continue building inventory? What are the alternatives existing on the manufacturing floor? When orders fail to appear workers and equipment are idle unless alternative work is found. When demand exceeds supply, can more supply be created through overtime or outsourcing? How are customers affected? "When actual demand is underestimated, management becomes the traffic cop, directing the company's limited output to certain customers and withholding it from others."
"Knowing that forecasts will never match actual demand, except on rare occassion, master schedulers understand that they must be flexible in shifting capacity and materials from one period to another. They must know which customer will allow a delivery split over two or more periods. "A valid master plan is one in which the material due dates equal the material need dates, and the planned capacity equals the required capacity."
Manufacturing Production Scheduling is balancing Demand (Sales Forecasts, Customer Orders, Branch Warehouses, Interplant orders, and Custom/Special Orders) with Supply (Inventory,Equipment, Labor, Facilities, Time, and Money). When a company has more demand for it product it can 1. Increase the supply of the product by getting more material and resources 2. Decrease the demand by turning away or rescheduling some of the demand. Likewise, if there is more supply of the product than demand the company has two choices: 1. Increase demand by energizing the sales force, run a promotion, or discount price. 2. Decrease the supply of the product or material/capacity needed to produce it by cutting back production, people, and equipment.
The supply side can have a shock absorber. Inventory is a shock absorber. Another type of supply shock absorber is flexibility in the manufacturing chain which allows the company to alter plant floor activity to satifisy demand flunctations with severe disruptions.
The demand side can have a shock absorber. Flexiblity can extend to sales and marketing through promotions and discounts. The customer can be swayed to cooperate with the demand and supply balance through sales and discount or sales inducements.
A company must decide which side of the demand and supply balance to focus on: "sell the products manufacturing makes" or "build the products that sales sells." Once decided the company moves to the task of balancing product supply through demand management, sales and operation planning, supply management, and master scheduling.
Capacity planning addresses the question: "Do we or will we have enough equipment, enough people, enough materials, and enough time to meet the sales and operations plans as currently written?"
Demand managment manages all demands for the product and ensures the master scheduler is aware of them. It encompasses the activities of forecasting, order entry, order promising, branch warehouse requirements, interplant orders, and service part requirements.
Supply management manages replenishment quantities created in response to anticipated or firm demands for the product. It encompasses supply planning in pre-sales and operations planning, rationing out the production plan to the manufacturing facility, coordinating finished goods inventory, manage production to satisify customer demand, establishing competitive lead times, and counseling with plant master schedules.
Fairly comprehensive and EZ to understand.......2001-03-24
One of few 600-pages book that is easy to understand, and a "pleasure" to read. The book is well organized, and fairly comprehensive. I was a novice in manufacturing concepts and this book helped me gain significant understanding of manufacturing planning concepts. The only subject that is lacking is a brief chapter on modern supply chain planning software packages that have become essential tools these days. The book is very expensive, but IMHO it's worth every penny if you're trying to learn about the subject.
Comprehensive and wonderfully written........1998-09-18
John F. Proud has given us the definitive text on master scheduling. He has turned what should be a dry subject into 500+ pages that are thorough, enlightening, and suprisingly readable.
Contents include the mechanics of master scheduling, managing the MPS in various manufacturing environments (make-to-stock, make-to-order, etc.), planning bills, finishing schedules, capacity planning, demand management, and system implementation.
