Want to improve your manufacturing processes and obtain excellent results? ¿Quiere mejorar sus procesos de manufactura?.......2007-10-18
This book will help reduce and even eliminate waste in your organization. It's worth trying. It makes manufacturing processes to flow better and brings quality improvement to the work place. I recommend it. All our employees should read it (Spanish Version) / Este libro ayuda a reducir e incluso a eliminar desperdicio en su organización. Vale la pena intentarlo. Hace que los processos de manufactura fluyan mejor y trae mejoría a la calidad en el lugar de trabajo. Lo recomiendo (Version en Español)
Very tiny book.......2007-05-10
Very tiny book. I was not expecting such a small book. Very expensive item for its size.
Book arrived with a grease stain on the cover!
Handy Reference, Perfect for Training Seminar.......2007-01-13
If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thanks.
The Lean Manufacturing Handbook.......2007-01-09
I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.
Lean .......2006-08-28
Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.

Classic Reference Book for Quality Engineers.......2006-06-05
Quality Control Handbook is classic reference book for quality engineers, first released in 1951. Among the quality management ideas and concepts for which Juran is well known include top management involvement, the Pareto principle, the need for widespread training in quality, the definition of quality as fitness for use, the project-by-project approach to quality improvement.
Joseph Juran's belief that "quality does not happen by accident" gave rise to the quality trilogy namely Quality Planning, Quality Improvement and Quality Control. The elements of the quality trilogy can be summarised as follows:
Quality Planning
* Identify who are the customers.
* Determine the needs of those customers.
* Translate those needs into our language.
* Develop a product that can respond to those needs.
* Optimise the product features so as to meet our needs and customer needs.
Quality Improvement
* Develop a process which is able to produce the product.
* Optimise the process.
Quality Control
* Prove that the process can produce the product under operating conditions with minimal inspection.
* Transfer the process to Operations.
Juran revolutionized the Japanese philosophy on quality management significantly helped shape their economy into the industrial leader it is today.
This is an excellent book that is highly recommended for those involved in quality control and management.
Use of Quality Control Handbook 1983 - 1988.......2001-10-09
While I continue to find Juran's Quality Control Handbook useful today, it was especially valuable to me when re-engineering software to support Health and Welfare Benefit business systems.
Also, later at a federal agency I found Juran's "root cause" for quality problem management extremely valuable. Currently, I am pursuing a senior level advisory position in the federal government and hold the Certified Information Systems Security Professional credential. I find Juran's handbook still valuable and worth studying even in today's Internet world.
This is the best reference for the ASQC certification exams........1997-04-05
Planning on taking the ASQC certification exams? Need to bring the least amoutns of reference materials?
This handbook and the primer are all you need
An outstanding reference handbook on quality!.......1996-01-11
I frequently use Juran and Gryna's Quality Control Handbook
as a reference for my work and writing. It is a comprehensive
reference for many issues in quality management, quality control,
and statisitical process control.
There are excellent discussions of quality as "fitness for
use," and the true costs of poor quality.
If you plan to take any of the American Society for Quality
Control's certification examinations, this is a good reference.
I used it for the Quality Engineering, Reliability Engineering,
Quality Management, and Quality Auditing exams, and it served
me well in each case.
-William A. Levinson
Product Description
The title of the ASQ certification changed to Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence to reflect the fact that the role of the quality function is continually evolving. Many of the responsibilities for the management of quality are being deployed throughout the organization into other functions. This now requires a much more comprehensive understanding of an organization as a system within the larger system of society. The range of tools and technologies that quality professionals are required to use and/or facilitate is also increasing. The ability to read, interpret, and use financial tools, as well as use the language of cost/profitability when talking to senior management, is more important than ever for quality professionals. In addition to being a peerless reference on quality management, The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Handbook is the most comprehensive preparatory guide for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Exam. The handbook is completely updated to reflect the changes in the 2006 Body of Knowledge (BoK), and the pertinent BoK requirements associated with good quality management practices are shown throughout each section. These BoK requirements represent the range of content and the cognitive level to which multiple choice questions can be presented. Included in appendices are the newly updated Body of Knowledge, an extensive glossary of terms, a list of additional references for further study, and (on an accompanying CD-ROM) sample questions similar to those on the actual exam.

Customer Reviews:
Kaizen Pocket Handbook.......2007-10-10
This booklet might be useful to an executive in a large company. However for the average person wanting to use kaizen generally in their whole life it's not very helpful. I also think it's overpriced for it's size and content.
Brief and to the Point.......2006-05-24
Kaizen is a Japanese word that means improvement. The Kaizen concept is on continuous improvement with a focus on the goals of quality, cost and schedule that ultimately drive company profitability. "The Kaizen Pocket Handbook" is a fantastic book for those that wish to have a quick guide for Kaizen and Kaizen Events.
Japanese companies distinguish between Kaizen (continuous change/improvement) and innovation (radical change). The Kaizen concept focuses on the elimination of waste and inefficiency. The kaizen five-S framework for good housekeeping is tidiness; orderliness; cleanliness; standardised clean-up and discipline.
Kaizen is a people oriented, relatively easy to implement and require long-term discipline. The concept fits well with incremental change situations that require long-term change of organisational culture.
This is a well written book, in simple and easy to understand language that makes it a valuable companion for those that wish to get started on the Kaizen and Kaizen events. The book is brief and to the point, highlighting the essentials without getting bogged down with details.
Great Primer.......2005-12-06
This is an excellent primer for anyone getting started with Kaizen and Kaizen Events. The book covers all of the basics in a thorough, concise, and easy to read manner. A good value for the money.

Book Description
This long-awaited companion and update to H. James Harrington's best-selling Business Process Improvement is a hands-on implementation guide. It focuses on upgrading information distribution paths to optimize the many processes with which they come in contact. Filled with lists, charts, and appendices, this workbook tells how to document a company's processes, analyze current effectiveness, design new processes, use system enablers, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
It is what it is...and provides solid material.......2007-03-13
I agree with other reviewers who question the designation "workbook." Actually, what we have here is a book which suggests the work which each reader must complete -- individually and in collaboration with others -- with regard to the documentation, analysis, design, and management of business process improvement. It provides no head-snapping revelations, nor do its co-authors claim to offer any. Obviously, it is important to improve performance continuously by improving various processes during which tasks are completed. It is also important to measure only what matters. Finally, all organizations (regardless of size or nature) must develop leaders at all levels and within all areas who drive change initiatives to achieve these objectives. Harrington, Esseling, and van Nimwegen offer a comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective methodology. Once having identified the "what," they focus on "how."
As the authors explain, Business Process Improvement (BPI) consists of four different approaches designed to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability of administrative processes: Fast Analysis Solution Technique (FAST), process benchmarking, process redesign, and process reengineering. They recommend a six-phase process that leads to the implementation of the best-value future-state solution: Organization, Documentation, Analysis, Design, Implementation, and Management. They then focus on each approach and each phase, suggesting similarities and differences between and among them.
I would have rated this book even higher had the presentation of the material been more "reader-friendly." By the time I reached Chapter 5 on page 167, the monotonous tone of the narrative to that point made it difficult for me to sustain my concentration. I always appreciate the provision of checklists, for example, because they organize and summarize key points, and, because they facilitate (indeed expedite) review of them later. To repeat, the material is solid. The authors obviously know what they are talking about. Their observations are based on real-world situations. Their suggestions are sensible. That said, this reader (at least) had to work much too hard to locate, absorb, and then digest the authors' core concepts.
No doubt other readers will find the material more accessible. My guess (only a guess) is that many of those who do will be C-level executives in larger organizations who already know much more about BPI than I do. I wish them and their associates well, hoping they can effectively apply -- and then have their organization benefit substantially from -- what Harrington, Esseling, and van Nimwegen offer.
A Very Useful Process Improvement Reference.......2006-09-19
I agree with the other reviewers, as I first purchased this book assuming that it was a "workbook" with working examples. It wasn't this type of workbook, but is a very valuable resource for the process-improvement minded. It could have utilized more illustrations - I suggest creating your own diagrams as you read through this book. This is the approach I took whilst reading the book and was very satisfied with the results.
Documentation, a very important subject that is often overlooked and/or underutilized, is explained very well in this book, describing the level of detail required to support a successful process improvement initiative. The Appendix XI - guidelines for designing forms and documents is fantastic and I recommend it for anyone considering facilitating process improvement workshops.
The organization chapter on organizing a process improvement team is very good - managers and especially companies wanting to accelerate their process improvement successes could benefit from this instruction.
The Defining Improvement Opportunities chapter was also very informative, linking the need for standardization with IT, administration and operations.
And lastly, don't discount one of the authors - H James Harrington. He is one of the best business writers in the business for topics ranging from process improvement, project management, customer service or even human resources. Don't miss a chance to read anything he has written.
I would disagree that this book is dry - it is well written and researched and if it had contained a few more illustrations, I would have given this book a 5-star rating.
Process Improvement Classic Reference.......2006-05-31
This book serves as a powerful reference on process improvement.
The author, H.J. Harrington, is wise. We can learn a lot from him. He's got great experience from the firm, Ernst and Young.
The book provides a deep, well-structured and methodical glimpse into the practice of process improvement.
Although there are many books on the subject (older and newer) this book is foundational. It blends TQM and Industrial engineering concepts. At some degree it is a "deep dive" into the Six Sigma method's Business Process Architecture (BPA) tool.
This book is a great reference for consultants, line managers, business process managers/owners and business analysts as well as anyone wanting a thorough understanding of Process Improvement.
Reading it and applying the practices described within may save companies money. It can build career enhancing compentencies in those that adopt/practice what they have learned.
For the relatively low price you can have access to the mind of a sage.
Buisness process improvment work book.......2006-03-08
Provide an excellent overview of BPM and provide good examples.
Not bad, could be better.......2002-07-19
I'll agree with users who feel this book is dry, dry, dry. I also have some issues with the design of the book. There were concepts that I found confusing until I drew my own flow charts -such aids could certainly have been included in the book. There were too many bulleted lists that probably should have been numbered for easier reference and ranking. Where this book shines is on the mechanics on BPI; how to organize the project and the teams (although a good project manager should know how to do this), the sequence of steps to go through, and how to organize all the collected information.
What is missing from this book, in my opinion, is discussion on Risk Management and Change Management. You can document processes and manuals and forms until you're blue in the face, but in the end, you'll have to get human beings to buy into the difficult task of changing processes to reach the future state, and there is little discussion of this.

Customer Reviews:
A basic reference for ISO 9001.......2007-05-21
This book provides a clause-by-clause analysis of ISO 9001 and it contains all the knowledge you need in order to understand this standard and to formulate strategies for compliance. It does not cover detailed theory or procedures for certain themes such as customer satisfaction measurement, sampling, or statistical process control. This should be the first book you read if you wish to implement an ISO 9001-compliant Quality Management System.
Quality Systems handbook.......2007-01-05
The material was just what I was looking for and the service from Amazon was excellent. Received my order ahead of schedule.
Thank you for the excellent service.
Excellent book on ISO 9000.......2006-05-22
"ISO 9000 Quality Systems handbook" is an excellent book on the effective implementation of quality management systems. The book is well written in simple/plain English that should make it easy to follow and understand by any reader.
The book was written by a very experienced practitioner in Quality Management Systems, the author (David Hoyle) having over three decades of experience in the field. This is an indispensable book for those implementing ISO 9000 Quality Management System. The reader will, among other things, understand the difference between the previous procedure approach to the current process approach to quality management. The reader will learn what the ISO 9000 requirements mean, why they are necessary and how to implement them.
The other critical features in the book includes a summary and questionnaire to reinforce the reader's knowledge and understanding as well as comprehensive list of references that should be very useful for those who need to explore the subject more widely.
The book is recommended reading for people involved in the implementation of ISO 9000 for enhanced organizational performance, particularly managers, designers, auditors, instructors and students of quality systems.
ISO9001 deeply explained.......2002-08-22
If you consider ISO9001 more than a paper on the wall then you should read this book. The author tells you what to do rather than a detailed prescription of how to do it. But more important he explains the reason of each ISO9001 requirement. This helps anybody that works with this standard to think about what the rational behind and how does this fit in each business.
Everybody should understand first and implement after and that's the purpose of this book: to deeply understand the standard in order to create or transform your management system (and by this way the quality system) into a customer driven management system
ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook 4th Edition - David Hoyle.......2002-04-18
With the introduction of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, a number of publications offering ideas, advice and assistance to anyone who have been charged with implementing quality systems, have made their appearance on the bookshelves. The ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook 4th Edition, by David Hoyle is one of the best I have read on this subject. In this 4th edition, David analyzes each section, clause and requirement of the ISO 9001:2000 standard in detail.
David Hoyle has over 30 years experience in quality Management and has authored or co-authored more than five books on ISO 9000. He is also the director of Transition Support, a firm that provides training and consulting in business improvement.
The book is easy to understand and is suitable for students, managers, instructors as well as auditors. The novice ISO practitioner as well as the seasoned ISO 9000 enthusiast will find this book a valuable tool when implementing ISO 9000 quality management systems. For those making the transition from the 1994 version of the standard, this book helps to point out the changes from the 1994 to the 2000 standard.
The standard has changed considerably. In the 4th edition, the meaning of each of the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard is explained in detail and some of the sometimes confusing ISO language is clarified. The author explains why each of the requirements is necessary. He shows how each requirement links to the eight quality management principles on which the ISO 9001:2000 standard was based. The book gives practical guidance on implementing each requirement. This is the strong point of the book.
After introducing some basic quality concepts, the book explains the role, the origins and application of the ISO 9000 family. The succeeding chapters, 4 through 8, correspond to each of the five sections of the standard. This makes it easy when looking for help in understanding and implementing a certain requirement of the standard.
The 4th edition has a summary, a questionnaire that provides food for thought for the reader, and a list of references at the end of each chapter. A glossary and a list of related websites are included in the appendix.
The 4th edition of ISO 9000 Quality Systems Handbook will find a permanent place on your desk. Auditors will find this book indispensable.

Book Description
Six Sigma is a system for improving the quality of organizational processes and products to a level of 3 defects per million--the "six sigma" level of quality. It was originally developed at Motorola in the 1980's and has become one of the most widely discussed and reported trends in business over the past two years, thanks largely to the phenomenal successes of the Six Sigma program at GE, where CEO Jack Welch credits it with millions of dollars in annual cost savings and product quality improvements. Due to the widespread coverage of the Six Sigma program by the business press over the last two years, there is strong demand for books and information on how Six Sigma works and how to implement it. The Six Sigma Handbook is designed for the manager or quality professional who is already familiar with Six Sigma and wants a guide to the basic quality tools and statistics that are the foundation for Six Sigma. In addition to providing a brief overview of the management and organization of Six Sigma, and the underlying philosophy, the book explains in detail the problem-solving techniques and statistical tools most often used in Six Sigma.

I've read it cover to cover, but can say that it is an excellent handbook.

The subtitle to Pyzdek's book is "A Complete Guide Greenbelts, Blackbelts ..." I think that is a bit of an overstatement. The book is a collection of snipets on managerial and technical issues. On the technical side, he covers a few pages here and few pages there on everything from control charts to design of experiments.
My view is that Pyzdek's book is a nice basic overview to six-sigma. Something for greenbelts but hardly the coverage necessary for blackbelts. Blackbelts, by definition, need in depth coverage with excellent software support. By the way, with the exception of a few figures of Excel output, software issues are pretty void in this book. And the use of Excel is questionable considering its accuracy problems (well documented).
For blackbelts, my advice is to pick up a management dedicated six-sigma book. Then for technical side, one is best served to arm themselves with authorative references. For ANOVA and DOE, consider Montgomery's "Design of Experiments" book and also consider Neter and Wasserman's "Applied Linear Models". For statistical process control, there is a gem of a book by Alwan titled "Statistical Process Analysis". Alwan's book covers basic SPC but takes process analysis to the next level by covering issues of nonnormality and time-series/SPC using a lot of Minitab (Pyzdek actually references his work). Armed with this collection of these basic references you will be no doubt have the technical skills of a master black belt or actually beyond.
Great for the Six Sigma Exam.......2002-03-25
If you are taking the ASQ exam, this would be a good choice. I would also recommend a first level statistics text book. I used Weiss Elementary Statistics.
Book Description
Focus in this book is placed on systems engineering and systems management for building systems of all types. The role of these systems to produce high reliability, and quality services and products is stressed. The role of advanced information technologies in enhancing productivity and quality is also discussed.

only game in town .......2006-02-13
Prof Sage is the gold standard wrt all things SE.
This is a comprehensive handbook that covers most SE topics.
It is not a cookbook or guide to doing SE. Nor is it a software handbook.
.
It is intended for people with some knowledge and experience that want to fill in or refresh their understanding of a given area concerning systems engineering.
There is no real competition. incose members have their orgs handbook which is in a constant state of flux as incose cant even agree on what SE is.
.
There are some govt tutorial books such as those from dsmc and dau. The cost is free and should also be in everybodies library.
Nasa and some other agencies have some dated compilations of their view of SE. Again free. Good for reference if you have the KSAs to know what is valid and what is obsolete or incorrect.
.
Sage's handbook is due to be updated and revised. Whether we will see another edition remains to be seen. He is currently busy working on Systems ARchitecture. Hopefully his classes and research will result in another book on that topic if not also inclusion of that with other new material in the SE hbk.
.
This book belongs in libraries. Have your company order one.
Whether an individual would want to spend this much depends on how much use they would make of it. Some program managers who are not SE experts may find it worth buyign for their own use.
.
The two star review above was clearly by a disgruntled student who had it as a class reference. My students bellyache about every book they are required to buy. None of them ever buy an optional book. Judge the book for your needs not by a student who got a bad grade.

Handbook or just a collection of essays?.......2003-10-30
I was very dissapointed with this book. Essentially it is a collection of essays on various topics with no logical flow or organization. In addition, no time was taken to present the material in any way useful to a student of Systems Engineering. I was required to purchase this book for a graduate class I am taking. Initially I believed that it was a sound investment and that I would retain the book as a valuable reference. Now I can't wait to sell it back. I question whether or not the editors did more than just staple together 30 essays.

hands-on guide that is immediately useful.......2001-05-11
Overall, this book is a straightforward examination of performance analysis that explains why p.a. is more practial than traditional "training." It's a godsend for people who have to implement a plan right away because of the abundance of checklists and templates. I have some minor criticisms though since I have read several books in a similar category. 1 -- the author does not write as professionally as others (Rothwell, for example, who wrote Beyond training and Development) and spends too much time touting her earlier books 2 -- often the information borders on the extremely obvious 3 -- the book is overpriced as many textbooks are. P.A. boils down to the fact that it's really a "casing the joint" type of strategy -- get a general idea of the situation before diving in. All this fancy terminology for such a basic idea... still, it can definitely save a company a lot of time and money to do this common sense approach before spending money on training.
Guess who's coming to dinner.......2000-11-30
This book serves as the first course at a performance analysis dinner-it whets the appetite and entices the reader to look further and deeper. It provides the reader with tasty morsels of information without weighing the reader down in the heavier technicalities of performance analysis. First Things Fast is a quick and easy reference for the professional trainer and one that I will keep on hand for future use. It addresses the situation as it is-the way things are-and provides concrete examples and solutions for those involved with the process. Because of the quick and easy reading that characterizes the book, I would recommend this book to those who are seeking a basic understanding of performance analysis without wanting to invest a great deal of time. I would also recommend it to those who want a quick reference for use in their performance analysis work (the templates are an effective starting point for the line of questioning which needs to occur). First Things Fast has the potential to be an extremely useful tool for those individuals who are in the position to decide what needs to be done and why.
An illuminating, practical guide for performance consulting.......1999-09-30
Rossett makes a very useful distinction in this book between performance analysis and training needs analysis. She recommends an action-oriented consulting approach that ensures the real problems and potential solutions are identified before selecting training as an intervention. Her approach is practical and recognizes the time and resource constraints that learning consultants, managers, and their companies operate within. I have ordered copies for all of my staff!
Great guide to quick human performance analysis.......1998-11-05
This book is a great help for anyone who is asked to analyze a performance problem. It provides a series of checklists and job aids to help someone figure out what's going on and how to fix it. It considers lots of problems and teaches you how to decide if the employee needs instruction, motivation or a changed environment. I really enjoyed this very practical and easy to read handbook; it avoids all the theory and jargon and puts the emphasis on analyzing human performance problems in a quick, efficient manner.
