But I'm certain that you're smart enough to see the stuff you've always wanted to do, buried deep inside one of these riffs. And I'm betting that once inspired, you'll actually make something happen.

Another winner- big time!.......2007-09-10
I think that Seth's books are getting better. But this is not a book book, its a collection of articles, newsletters and blog posts. But it is real, quality, and very useful. Such useful ideas as, " The best marketers, of course, use the needle and the vise at them same time:. They don't assault, they don't demand, instead they earn attention. And they apply their marketing pressure so consistently and in such a measured and relentless way that sooner or later, they profit from it. " A great book if you want it in small lumps or more, It would be a good plane ride book, but bring a highlighter! I love this one
"I. Humans tend to work on a problem until they get a good enough solution, not a solution that's right.
2. The marketplace often rewards solutions that are cheaper and good enough, instead of investing in the solution that promises to lead to the right answer."
A Shot in the Arm.......2007-08-24
Whether you're an internet entrepreneur, a New Economy worker, or a creative-type, you'll find something of value in Godin's riffs. Written with a dose of humor, and short enough to be devoured in a trip to the bathroom, these think pieces are just what the doctor ordered to stir things up and give you a new perspective on the business of business.
I have reviewed business books for years and can smell BS a mile away. Godin is one of the few "experts" who really get it. Highly recommended. Buy a copy because you'll want to read it again and again.
For the marketing- minded and money- making only ... .......2007-08-20
Seth Godin is a supersalesman of the NetAge, a wonderblogwhiz successful to the manymillions. He puts in print for us here eight years of his previous postings packaging it anew for paperback bucks. He hypes and rehypes a number of key formulas for making the reader a riskier retailer of his own personal product. He gives us a variant of E.M.Schumacher's 'Small is Beautiful" and tells us 'Small is the New Big" He explores endless examples with small stories which show us how to better be the respectful, rightthinking managers of our own mental means.
He teaches us how to live and think faster and better, and make it all work for us.
However between his message and my execution of it falls the abyss. NO KLUTZES WANTED HERE this book seems to say, and all I can do is go round and round and round with my own worried words never able to sell them not one single little bit. (Dig-a-bit?)
In any case if you are of another mind, more practical, realistic, technically competent, marketing mindful- this work can provide plenty of fodder for the moo.
Get a Great Creativity Boost.......2007-08-07
Reading this book was like hooking up to a battery charger for business creativity. The book doesn't read like a typical "how to." There are just short bursts of genious that jump off the page and make you think about how and why you do what you do. I keep the book at my desk at the office and I often refer back to it when I'm trying to solve a marketing or operational challenge.
Seth is a red rubber ball.......2007-07-19
As I read this book, I thought "Seth Godin is like a red rubber ball." You know, you throw a ball against a concrete wall and it just bounces off. It looks pretty and makes a nifty noise. But the wall doesn't move.
And that's Seth Godin. A lot of action, but no real impact. This book is a big idea without a next step. A complaint without a solution. Seth is the guy who stands up to start a standing ovation, but does it so awkwardly that no-one joins him. This book is a celebration of everything Seth abhors about marketing and business and management, written with the luxurious smugness of someone who cannot suggest a practical alternative.
I can understand why Seth's rant seems to be "everyone is afraid of change". That's what my rant would be if I had a lot of ideas, but couldn't actually convince anyone to follow my suggestions. I'd think "it's them! They're all stuck in the status quo!"
To illustrate the point, Seth recalls a time a salesperson tried to pin an executive down to make a yes or no decision. The exec was non-committal, and then showed the pushy salesperson the door when she asked the exec to sign a document giving her permission to take the offer to a competitor. Seth uses this as evidence that some people are afraid to make a decision. I say, if a salesperson tried to force me to make a decision on the spot, they'd get shown the door too. But this just proves the point. An inability to influence is somehow the other guy's fault.
Actually, I think it's Seth who is stuck. His book "Small is the New Big" reads like it was written by a 14 year old boy - where everything is black and white (you change or you die) and he's discovering things other marketers have known for a long time (it's not about needs, it's about wants).
Yawn.
On the positive side, Seth has some creative ideas and a lively writing style. He's obviously an observer and a collector of little marketing nuggets. But after reading about 50 pages it all became very monotone and self-aggrandizing.
Judging from the reviews on Amazon, it looks like Seth has touched some people's lives for the better. So there must be something there. But for me, this is like listening to a first-year MBA student fumbling through a bad business plan. Bounce, bounce, boing, boing.

Incredible - Hits the Nail on the Head.......2006-01-13
I first saw Herman Cain as a keynote speaker at a project management professional seminar. His speach blew me away. Since then I've been a huge fan. I purchased this book and it, like his speech, as outstanding. A great read from and about a great man, with great advice about leadership.
More Empty Phrase-making from Jack Kemp???.......2005-11-27
Not only did our anonymous reviewer forget the 80's economic boom, he apparently forgot to read the book. Hint: Jack Kemp didn't write it...
Previous Reviews.......1999-02-08
In reading the reviews of this book, I see that some people are writing reviews without reading the book. In fact, the do not even know who wrote the book. They are just more interested in downgrading a person and their ideas.
More Empty Phrase-making from Jack Kemp.......1998-12-28
The title may be the best thing about Jack Kemp, not that "leadership" or "common sense" have anything to do with the former Congressman and HUD chief. This book reads like a sloppy collection of Kemp speech notes, culled from years of underwhelming speeches to confused Republican audiences -- confused because they came to hear a celebrated "conservative" speaker who says nothing conservative. Even on taxes, Kemp betrays the conservative philosophy: he argues that lower rates will net the government treasury more loot as the dollar turns over more often (a theory not yet substantiated). The conservative position has always been, and remains, that government needs to do with a very modest budget and treasury, and that tax cuts are good and right because the money in question belongs to its earner and no one else. Fiscal budgetary conservatism has never been Kemp's bag. In this book he argues against debt-reduction and warns that deficits are no big deal. Borrowing money and netting the treasury more money are, you see, ways to ensure that fat-cat bureaucrats like Kemp, who headed HUD from 1989-1992, get to spend lots of "public" money on their pet projects. Instead of elmiminating the neighborhood-wrecking agency -- a truly conservative idea -- Kemp bloated its already-exhorbitant budget by another 40%, leaving suburb-wrecker Henry Cisneros a well-oiled monster of a liberal attack dog. Race is another favorite topic. The irony is he demostrates with every sentence that he simply knows nothing about race. His words and ideas betray his complete ignorance of history, anthropology and sociobiology. For liberal Republican Kemp, "race" is synonymous with "color." It's a good thing he is not a serologist.
Heartwarming story and inspiring.......1997-04-01
I read this book after seeing the author talk about the book on several talk shows earlier this year. Mr. Cain is the epitome of the American rise to success story. His life story is one of hard work coupled with the burning desire to succeed. The obstacles he has faced will ring familiar to many. He has also included the "three plus three" leadership guide that drives his life and that has inspired me in my life. If you want more out of life, inspiration to move on and change, or if you want to improve your leadership skills read this book

Will enlighten some noncommissioned officers...and frighten others. The book, based on experience throughout a long and successful career, is about leadership from the NCO perspective instead of the officer perspective.--Army Magazine

All 5 star reviews? Give me a break..........2007-10-22
I had to read this horrible book for an NCODP. Someone please give me those hours back. At best, he has maybe 40-60 pages of worthy material in here. It is padded all to hell and written in a "See Spot Run" style that is amazingly insulting. Even worse, none of these "leadership" stories involve combat. They are all about APFTs and barracks inspections. Snore.
A Supervisor's Guide to Personnel Management.......2007-04-18
The concept of the three meter zone is brilliant for business-- when combined with some of the reading in Small Unit Leadership: A Common Sense Approach (notice some, I wasn't entirely happy with the other book) you'll find that there are four basic types of employees:
1)Willing and Able: Those who don't need huge amounts of supervision (100 meter zone, completely safe and needs a pat on the back every once in a while)
2)Willing and Unable: Those who can be molded/trained (50 meter zone, needs some training to get the job done but is completely willing to learn with some help)
3)Unwilling and Able: 50 meter zone employee who needs guidance to get him back to the 100 meter zone
4)Unwilling and Unable: 3 meter zone employee-- immediate up-training and close supervision required.
The concept of the 3, 50, and 100 meter zones is based off of a training that the author received concerning the Bouncing Betty Mine-- this is an anti-personnel mine that was capable of killing within 3 meters, wounding at 50, and wasn't out of danger-close until 100 meters. As a supervisor, we are the mine. Our job is to get our employees out of our killing zone (in other words, write ups, disciplinary action, etc) as quick as possible.
Like other great military/business reads that have proceeded it the material is given concisely with a minimum of fluff; you can tell that the author knew what he wanted to say and how to say it. I highly recommend this book for those who want to learn more about military doctrine in business; my copy is right next to the Book of Five Rings and the Art of War.
The Three Meter Zone.......2007-03-23
Excellent book for any leader that would like to fine tune there skills and furture career advancment
An NCO must!!!!.......2005-09-21
Great book. This is direct, in your face leadership for today's first line leaders. This book should be a required reading for all NCO's in the Army.
The Three Meter Zone.......2004-02-05
Welcome to The Three Meter Zone, the zone where first-line leaders accomplish an organization's most vital work. The critical leadership in any organization is that provided by first-line leaders. In the military that responsibility falls to Noncommissioned Officers, the group of men and women considered the Backbone of the force. Daily, they train and mold soldiers through expert action and by professional example. Without rock-solid leaders in the Three Meter Zone, the strategic mission fails. The Three Meter Zone challenges you to assess your leadership abilities and provide the crucial leadership your organization needs.
The best way to understand the impact first-line leadership has on organizations and what it entails is to thoroughly study it where it occurs. In the Three Meter Zone.

Restates Simple but Important Lessons.......2005-11-05
If you're looking for a supervision textbook, this ain't it. If you're looking for an integrated theory of leadership, this ain't it.
But if you'd like to have a simple, little book that will prod you and remind you about actions and attitudes that go into good supervision, then Common Sense Supervision is an excellent choice.
This book is a collection of common sense thoughts about supervision, each paired with a quote. This is not a book to read straight through. It's a book to keep handy and dip into from time to time.
Nothing here is novel. Nothing here is difficult. Nothing here is likely to leave you slapping your forehead at some incredible insight you've never heard before.
But that doesn't mean that the material here isn't important and it doesn't mean you don't need to be reminded of it from time to time. That's what this book is excellent for, reminding you about important things.
If you're in charge of a group and you're the sort of person who benefits from quick review of things you already know are important, then buy this book. It will be worth far more than the cover price. Buy it and dip into it frequently.
On the other hand, if you find yourself feeling insulted when you read something you already know, something that's "common sense," then don't waste your money on this book. Go find something that does give you value.
Not very informative........2005-10-14
This book is appropriately titled. If you have ANY common sense you will not learn anything. There are lots of lists with no elaboration; for instance "25 common mistakes of first time supervisors". There are no comments on actions one should take to avoid them, just a list. The bulleted and list based layout causes most of the pages to be half blank. This book has only about 30 full pages of text. It takes about 25-30 minutes to read cover to cover.
Disappointing.......2004-02-14
If you have any common sense of your own, you don't need this book. Having been supervised yourself should have taught you these basics, such as "Don't criticize superiors" and "Be patient and calm" I also didn't care for the bullet/list style of writing.
Don't think to hard, it only takes a little "Common Sense".......2000-02-29
Common Sense Supervision by Roger V. Fulton is a clear-cut guide for those who have obtained a new supervisory position and/or those who have been in a supervisory position for a short period. I think it is more geared toward the first time supervisor and could be a very useful tool by those who are becoming first time supervisors, whether it be through promotion or direct job placement. Roger V. Fulton has written this book in a clear-cut, no-nonsense style that can be understood by anyone. It touches on many, but not all of the situations that a supervisor may face. The book outlines the major responsibilities of a supervisor and many of the problems they may face with these added responsibilities. It begins by assuring you that you have made strides in the right direction by purchasing the book. The ideas, concepts, and solutions presented in this book are so practical and concise that they can be used immediately to help assist any supervisor be a good or better supervisor than they ever thought they could be. The book also states that its text does not tell you how to handle every situation since every situation, employee, and supervisor is different. I think that is good to let the reader know that this book doesn't have all the answers, which I think no book can do when it comes to dealing with people. The books material really gives you a guide to follow in order to be successful as a supervisor, but it is the individual who must use this guide along with their own common sense to handle each new and challenging situation they may face. The book touches on topics such as your role as a supervisor, getting along with your boss, setting the example for your employees, winning the respect of your employees, winning confidence, and preventing and handling problems in the work environment. The book explains these topics in a common, everyday workplace sense and even gives a brief problem solving method and a decision making process that can be followed by the reader. At times the book seems to be a reassurance for the reader of their abilities to be a successful supervisor. It reads too at times like a confidence builder for someone struggling in the position of supervising or someone unsure of their ability to become a supervisor. I think this book does a great job of providing the reader with a lot of essential information that can be used in everyday situations. It also does a good job of letting the reader know that there is a lot more to being a supervisor than what's contained in its text. The book is merely a start of what it takes to be a successful supervisor, as it states, "experience will be your best teacher and you will be its best student." This book is a great asset for any supervisor, whether it is the new start supervisor looking for success or the already successful supervisor who has forgotten the basics that made them successful in the first place.
A must-read book for anyone in a supervisory position........1999-12-28
This is a very enjoyable book about what it takes to make a good supervisor. With it and it's companion book by the same author, Common Sense Leadership, a person who is new to being in a position of authority, will be able to go into that position with the quotes of great world leaders and thinkers, readily available to meet any situation that arises. Hopefully the book will help the reader avoid costly mistakes and help him or her rise up the leadership ladder.
Customer Reviews:
Outdoor Leadership.......2007-10-18
On the face of it, this book is about how to successfully lead a group of outdoor adventurers who have paid for your leadership or who by explicit agreement or unspoken convention yield authority to you. Thus, everyone in the group holds you ultimately responsible for their well being and morale, and you have the rank and social power within the group to send someone packing if you so judge. Since the context of this leadership is an outdoor adventure, the examples of how to lead involve scenarios of that sort. Extrapolation can go in two directions: outdoor adventure in general, no matter who is in charge, and leadership in general, no matter what the context. The first arises from the attention in the book to wise planning and preparation before the trek, and while out in the wild, to calm, reasoned, compassionate leadership choices aimed at the safety and well-tempered dynamics of the group. The second arises because leading in the field and leading indoors both involve having socially sanctioned authority over people who may disagree with your choices or your right to power.
The book reads a little too much like a PBS special, where on stage there's an ever smiling man in a soft sweater, pacing slowly with small gestures as he speaks. Behind him is a large screen where we can read his discussion points and favorite quotations. In a quiet, gentle voice he urges us all to find inner peace and harmony, for in finding our calm center we will inspire respect and cooperative obedience.
Outdoor Leadership: Technique, Common Sense and Self-Confidence.......2007-01-11
This is a very helpful book for those who are pursuing leadership roles. I am impressed with the way the author incorporates basic values into leadership issues.
Care with regards to varying team capabilities.......2006-11-01
This book challenges you to look more closely at your team's ability to perform. Examples are given in how to handle situations more persuasively without offensiveness.
Leadership is to be earned thru the team's acknowledgement and permission to lead based upon your ability. Yet leaders must also learn to go to team members for their expertise and experience while factoring the teams overall comfort with the task and method to be undertaken.
The author builds his book on solid basic principles and adds some often much overlooked guidelines. One major point is about caring for your people.
The author doesn't spell out enough that how you treat your least or worst team member is how the others will respect you or mistrust you. Leaders need trust for honesty and integrity but also respect which comes mainly from your technical expertise and ability. This is the books only week point.
Thank you for your time.
Any Outdoor Leader needs to read it.......2002-03-24
I'm an Eagle Scout from troop 572 of Carolina Puerto Rico, and all the leadership skill that I learn during my best time of my life is in that book.
I'm also worked at Denali National Park, Alaska and is great see a lot of people that love the wild and love to camp and hike, but more important is to be a leader in the woods with the visitors, that's why to be an Interps in Denali needs a lot of skills and Information that this book have it.
Any Outdoor Leader needs to read this Book.
Maybe Fewer Stars for Corporate Use.......2001-11-16
I purchased this book for analagous use in a large corporation. It contains many useful insights and guidelines for leadership. Unfortunately, the author's attempt to generalize the definition of the term "pucker factor" is not enough to overcome the term's original anatomical meaning, hence making it questionable for corporate use. This conclusion is based on interpretations of the term from employees I surveyed. A more neutral term like "stress factor" would make it a perfect metaphorical book for use in corporations.

The best book on military training from platoon to division level that has been published in any army.--Army Magazine
Customer Reviews:
Overrated & Outdated.......2004-11-13
I am an Assistant Professor of Military Science at an ROTC university and I used this book for my class, based on the excellent reviews it has received. However, both my cadets and I found the reading to be dry & many of the issues brought up by the author may have been relevant during the Vietnam & post Vietnam area, but do not apply to the modern Army. The book might be better suited if one was strictly studying the Army during the Vietnam area, but I cannot otherwise recommend it.
If Resources Are Limited...........2001-05-17
Athletes are coached to "play within themselves" while striving to set new performance standards. In the business world (as Buckingham and Coffman explain in First, Break All the Rules), the most effective managers are those who focus almost entirely on their people's talents and get those talents in proper alignment with the tasks to be completed. The United States military services (especially the Marine Corps) take an entirely different approrach: Through what is indeed basic training, they require everyone involved to master essentially the same skills, within the same schedule, under the same conditions, etc. Only later are graduates of this rigorous process selected to receive more specialized training, usually according to their talents.
This book will be especially valuable to those organizations which have limited resources to invest in formal training. More than 90% of what is learned in any workplace is the result of on-the-job (i.e. informal) training. Collins and Bolger have obviously taken a close look at all manner of formal training programs, including those in the military srevices. They also fully understand the importance of informal training. If your organization has limited resources but a great need to increase the value of its human capital (i.e. increasing the quantity and -- especially -- the quality of what they understand and what they can do), what this book offers would be an excellent starting point. I'm not damning with faint praise. Eventually, if and when appropriate, I would then recommend Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline and The Dance of Change.
All organizations, regardless of size or nature, must constantly focus on increasing the effectiveness of on-the-job training. There are always at least a few people in each corporate department or small-to-midsize company who are both knowledgable and passionate. "They really know their stuff." They love to explain what they do and how they do it. Others probably think of them as "born teachers." Put them to work as trainers and be sure to reward them generously for their services. Provide books such as Collins and Bolger's to assist their preparation. One effective strategy is to have them conduct what I call "brown bag seminars." Employers or supervisors provide the food and beverages, welcome the participants, wish them well, and then leave the room. Any organization's most valuable assets really do "walk out the door at the end of each day." It is also important to remember that those assets are located between two ears.
Easy to Understand Approach to Training -- Pratical.......1999-10-15
A very good read if you are looking to improve the quality of your training programs. Stresses the importance of continuity, breadth, and the leadership role. If you are tired of elaborate and expensive training programs which are difficult to develop and sustain (and therefore not that effective!), you might want to try this book out! I have never served in the military yet found it quite useful. Good civilian application if you understand the military.

Praise for The LEADERSHIP GENIUS of GEORGE W. BUSH
"Finally, a fun-to-read book about George W. Bush that details the secrets to his success!"
-Ken Blanchard, coauthor, The One Minute Manager®
"Political journalists love graduate student intelligence, the ability to make clever allusions in seminars, and in 19992000 they hassled George W. Bush for not having it. They didnt realize what this book succinctly displays: that the President has something far more important-CEO intelligence, the ability to ask tough questions, garner essential information, and make discerning decisions. Such intelligence can be fostered and honed, and this book shows how."
-Dr. Marvin Olasky, Professor of Journalism, The University of Texas at Austin, and Editor in Chief, World magazine
"Put aside politics and read this book right away for its true wisdom and concrete advice about leadership. The authors have done a brilliant job explaining the leadership style that makes this President so effective. Any leader can learn from the philosophy, strategy, and tactics in this book."
-Bruce Tulgan, founder of RainmakerThinking, Inc., author, Winning the Talent Wars
"Thompson and Ware make a compelling case that this President who loves to be underestimated has a highly effective approach to leadership that is humane, direct, and at times, truly transformational. Many in business today could benefit from reading this book."
-David M. Abshire, President, Center for the Study of the Presidency
"Carolyn Thompson and James Ware have it right . . . leadership is about what one is, not just what one does. About character, not just charisma . . . about credibility, not just credentials. This timely account of The Leadership Genius of George W. Bush will truly encourage and inspire readers."
-Commissioner Robert A. Watson, Retired National Commander, The Salvation Army, U.S.A.

Part Biography, Part Case Study.......2005-08-25
"The Leadership Genius Of George W. Bush" is a rare combination of biography and business school case study.
This book centers on the study of characteristics of George W. Bush's ten leadership qualities and how the reader can apply them to his own life.
From the perspective of a business case study, I found Bush's discipline to be inspiring. In his discipline to reserve time for exercise I find affirmation of my own practices. In his discipline in leaving work at a regular time I find a tremendous challenge.
Lessons in Bush's leadership are drawn form episodes and issues encountered in his life. From these we gather an insight into his life story.
I often evaluate books by whether it alters my view of things. This one meets that test. The lessons of leadership are causing me to rethink some of my own practices. The stories of George W. Bush's life have heightened my respect for him.
Finally a leadership book with how to do it!.......2003-01-25
There are so many wonderful leaders out there and many books about what they do. Oh yes, this book is about what Goerge W. does but most important for me, it tells step by step how I can be disciplined like he is and develop my personal core values and hold people accountable, etc.
If you want to enhance your ability to lead - read this book. Mine is covered with notes and I bought one for each of my staff!
Commonsense Approach to Leadership.......2003-01-23
I am an avid reader of biographies and this book provided a biographical sketch of President Bush's lifestyle and then used that foundation to show how his management skills transformed his life. I grabbed a pencil and highlighter half-way into the first chapter and began writing in the margins. I liked this book because I could open to any page and find a nugget of information with a down to earth example. Some of the examples were just real funny and actually made me laugh out loud.
Then after reading the first few chapters, I realized that this book was not about President Bush's politics (although there was some strategies revealed) or about his faith (although his personal convictions are the heart of his core values) or even about his IQ level (his emotional intelligence is recognized as highly intuitive). This was a book was about how an average person can become the leader they want to be.
I finished the book quickly from a purely biographical point of view and now am going back over each chapter to concentrate on the leadership competencies and how I can learn from the examples. The authors know what they are talking about but they also made it real easy for the reader to put into practice the lessons that need to be learned.
After reading this book, I also came to appreciate and admire President Bush and how his personal discipline is one of the timeless principles of his leadership. I am glad that I read this book at this time in history.
A Flawed but Relevant Stab at Biography.......2003-01-23
This tome purports to explain why GWB is a talented leader of the American people and the world.
In fact, it demonstrates conclusively that the American people suffered a collective fit of hallucination when they voted this singularly incompetent man into office.
The book has some nice information about Crawford, Texas and the Bush's dogs -- but it does not tell us anything about the psychology of the Boy Emperor. Perhaps this is becuase the BE has no particular psychological nuance to display? Perhaps.
Leadership, as Fred Nietzsche once opined, is about breaking the rules when others think that rule breaking would be a mistake.
Bush's "leadership," as noted by the author, consists of learning the rules and efficiently applying them with charm and gingerly worded disinformation. Then again, maybe the book isn't half bad. I learned how to be manipualtive and nice at the same time.
An excellent resource !.......2003-01-17
In an enjoyable and insightful manner, authors Thompson and Ware present a compelling analysis of George W. Bush's leadership skills and techniques. In ten (10) concise chapters the reader is presented with an equal number of practical lessons that are applicable to leaders (or potential leaders) within most any type of organization. Starting with an examination of the fundamental core values that drive President Bush, the authors develop a useful guide that is loaded with practical "real world" examples and references. I personally found the chapter on Intuitive Wisdom to be very useful and thought provoking.
This book also serves as a powerful and timely corrective to much of the partisan nonsense that has been published in recent years regarding President Bush's capabilities. For all those truly interested in improving their management skills and those seeking diversity in thought and opinion, this one is a must read!
