4 out of 5 stars Modern and practical guide to reliability analysis.......2000-06-13

This text is an extensive and modern treatment of reliability with many practical case studies. It covers many of the standard topics including most of the topics covered in the recent book by Meeker and Escobar (1998) "Statistical Methods for Reliability Data". It is unique in its coverage of warranties (Chapter 17). These authors are very knowledgeable about the literature on warranty analysis and have edited the Product Warranty Handbook published by Marcel Dekker in 1996 and published their own text dedicated solely to that topic ("Warranty Cost Analysis" published by Marcel Dekker in 1994). Emphasis is placed on case studies which are discussed up front in the Overview chapter and treated in detail in Chapter 19.

    Book Description

In Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes, the term "optimization" means the maximizing of productivity and safety while minimizing operating costs. In a fully optimized plant, efficiency and productivity are continuously maximized while levels, temperatures, pressures, or flows float within their allowable limits. This control philosophy differs from earlier approaches - where levels and temperatures were controlled at constant values, and plant productivity was only an accidental, uncontrolled consequence of those controlled variables. With this approach, the sides of a multivariable control envelope are the various constraints while inside the envelope the process is continuously moved to maximize efficiency and productivity. Because one must understand a process before one can control it (let alone optimize it), Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes discusses the "personality" and characteristics of each process in term of its time constants, gains, and other unique features. This book provides information for engineers who design or operate industrial plants and who seek to increase the profitability of their plants. It recognizes that all industrial processes involve operations such as material transportation, heat transfer, and reactions. Therefore each plant consists of a combination of basic unit operations and can be optimized by maximizing the efficiency, and minimizing the operating cost, of the individual unit operations from which it is composed. Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes discusses real world processes - where pipes leak, sensors plug, and pumps cavitate - offering practical solutions to real problems. Each control system described in the book works, illustrating the state of the art in controlling a particular unit operation. This second edition reflects the continual improvement and evolution of control systems as well as anticipates future advances.

      Book Description

This book describes and demonstrates how SAP ® APO can be used to tackle real optimization problems arising in industry. In a unique combination it deals with the aspects of model-building as well as with the implementation in commercial supply chain management software, SAP APO being a typical example of an advanced planning system (APS).

The authors address readers involved in optimization projects in which SAP and, particularly, SAP APO are implemented in companies. These are the project designers, projects leaders, the IT personnel inside the companies, but also operations research practitioners, supply chain management consultants, and decision makers in the area of tool selection for optimization tasks.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Overview, Not a Manual.......2007-01-11

This is a good overview of the SNP Optimizer and other modules in APO. It also goes into other optimization models (outside SAP), and has valuable examples of these in industries where optimization modeling long preceded SAP and SAP APO like the chemical and petroleum industries. Walking through the decisions of how these clients decided to either convert their models to an SNP implementation or use the external model as a bolt-on (the authors and SAP people prefer the term "plug-in") was enlightening.

This book will save you some grief in the decision-making process up-front, but it is not a how-to manual. At the time of writing the authors did not know of many live implementations of the SNP optimizer. The focus is on pre-implementation decisions and implementation. There is a lot of talk about what in SNP is technically possible, but not advised and could yield an impractical implementation. The book provides a good perspective for experienced practitioners of optimization modeling.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of SNP Optimizer.......2006-08-24

Good overview of SNP Optimizer. Does not get into details, but does show explain how optimizer works. Good examples of implementations for clients in various industries. Strictly concerned with SNP Optimizer. Good reference material but would not use on an on-going basis.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Desktop Reference.......2005-12-07

I looked long and hard for a book this thorough. A buddy of mine had Crevelings tolerancing book and I thought that was excellent. As I finished my masters degree, I needed a thorough desktop reference that I thought represented best in class. That's exactly what this book is. Since each chapter is written by the major players in these areas, this book is much more than one authors views on the topics. Rather, it is a best in class compilation from some of the sharper folks here in the US doing dimensioning and tolerancing. Paul's chapters themselves are excellent and very thorough. His discussion on how to incorporate the geometric controls into stackup analyses is excellent. Overall, this book should be on every mechanical engineers desktop along with the ASME GD&T standard and Montgomery's books on Quality Control and Design of Experiments. Hats off to Paul and all the other authors for their excellent work!

5 out of 5 stars bought used, great value.......2003-03-31

I would say the first 1/2 is GD&T. The 2nd 1/2 covers tolerancing methods. I have learned a lot from the 2nd half. It covered a lot of new information, in clear terms. I have been through six sigma certification. This is a valuable book in my toolbox.

5 out of 5 stars Dimensioning and Tolerancing Handbook.......2000-09-25

This book includes an extraordinary consolidation of cutting edge information and innovative authors that are truly on the "bleeding edge of technology"! Each chapter covers different topic areas by individuals practicing these design techniques and tools in the real world today. The chapters cover everything from an overview of the various quality thursts, to tolerance allocation techniques, to maximizing GD&T, to Statistical tolerancing, to developing process capability models for DFSS (Designing for Six Sigma), and much more. This text is surely one of the best ever compiled as a consolidation of the contained related subject matter. This is a priceless body of knowledge in a single book!

          Book Description

This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. This book addresses solving real life or industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. It is based on the twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role. One of the goals of this book is to allow non-expert readers, students in business, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science to solve such problems using standard modeling tools and MIP software. To achieve this the book provides an introduction to MIP modeling and to planning systems, as well as a unique collection of reformulation results, integrating them into a comprehensive modeling and reformulation approach, as well as an easy to use problem-solving library. Moreover this approach is demonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations.

Graduate students and researchers in operations research, management, science and applied mathematics wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the formulations and mathematics underlying this approach will find this book useful because of its detailed treatment of the polyhedral structure of the basic lot-sizing problems and simple mixed integer sets that arise in more complicated problems. Reading this book will allow the reader to improve formulations of non-standard MIP models much more effectively and produce state-of-the-art models and algorithms.

This text provides a practical, real-world understanding of engineering optimization. Rather than belaboring underlying proofs and mathematical derivations, it emphasizes optimization methodology, focusing on techniques and stratagems relevant to engineering applications in design, operations, and analysis. It surveys diverse optimization methods, ranging from those applicable to the minimization of a single-variable function to those most suitable for large-scale, nonlinear constrained problems. New material covered includes the duality theory, interior point methods for solving LP problems, the generalized Lagrange multiplier method and generalization of convex functions, and goal programming for solving multi-objective optimization problems. A practical, hands-on reference and text, Engineering Optimization, Second Edition covers:
            * Practical issues, such as model formulation, implementation, starting point generation, and more
            * Current, state-of-the-art optimization software
            * Three engineering case studies plus numerous examples from chemical, industrial, and mechanical engineering
            * Both classical methods and new techniques, such as successive quadratic programming, interior point methods, and goal programming

Excellent for self-study and as a reference for engineering professionals, this Second Edition is also ideal for senior and graduate courses on engineering optimization, including television and online instruction, as well as for in-plant training.

              Book Description

The book begins with an easy-to-read introduction to the concepts associated with the creation of optimization models for production planning. These concepts are then applied to well-known planning models, namely mrp and MRP II. From this foundation fairly sophisticated models for supply chain management are developed. Another unique feature is that models are developed with an eye toward implementation. In fact, there is a chapter that provides explicit examples of implementation of the basic models using a variety of popular, commercially available modeling languages. The new edition is updated and provides extensions.

The authors have done good job by compiling research papers of course most of their own. But still book is in between research papers and good text book. No one can recommend this book to newbie in the field of AI. Over all its a nice book addressing application of AI techniques for mechanical engineering problems.Very rare book available of this kind. Good job.

5 out of 5 stars Applying Modern Techniques to Manufacturing.......2006-04-14

Manufacturing optimization is the systematic and scientific approach for solving problems concerned with various manufacturing functions to make the best production decisions.

Over the history of manufacturing various techniques for solving manufacturing problems have been derived. These are examined at the start of this book to illustrate what was done in the past and to serve as a baseline upon which to build the more advanced techniques that have been developed more recently.

From this base Dr. Saravanan goes on to discuss multivariable techniques, genetic algorithms, optimal design for manufacturing , optimization of machining tolerance allocation, optimization of operating parameters for CNC machine tools, scheduling optimization, and finally modern manufacturing applications.

It is intended that by the end of this book, the reader be able to select and implement suitable optimization procedures and algorithms for a wide variety of problems.
