This book tries to capture the major topics that fall under the umbrella of "Variation Management." The book is laid out so that the reader can easily understand the variation management process and how each chapter maps to this process. This book has two purposes. It is a "one-step" resource for people who want to know everything about dimensional management and variation management. It is a useful reference for specific target audiences within the variation management process. This book includes many new techniques, methodologies, and examples that have never been published before. Much of the new material revolves around Six Sigma techniques that have evolved within the past 5 years. This book offers high level information and expertise to a broad spectrum of readers, while providing detailed information for those needing specific information. The contributors are practitioners who have hands-on experience. Much of the expertise in this book is a result of identifying needs to solve problems in our companies and businesses. Many of the chapters are the documented solutions to these needs.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Desktop Reference.......2005-12-07

I looked long and hard for a book this thorough. A buddy of mine had Crevelings tolerancing book and I thought that was excellent. As I finished my masters degree, I needed a thorough desktop reference that I thought represented best in class. That's exactly what this book is. Since each chapter is written by the major players in these areas, this book is much more than one authors views on the topics. Rather, it is a best in class compilation from some of the sharper folks here in the US doing dimensioning and tolerancing. Paul's chapters themselves are excellent and very thorough. His discussion on how to incorporate the geometric controls into stackup analyses is excellent. Overall, this book should be on every mechanical engineers desktop along with the ASME GD&T standard and Montgomery's books on Quality Control and Design of Experiments. Hats off to Paul and all the other authors for their excellent work!

5 out of 5 stars bought used, great value.......2003-03-31

I would say the first 1/2 is GD&T. The 2nd 1/2 covers tolerancing methods. I have learned a lot from the 2nd half. It covered a lot of new information, in clear terms. I have been through six sigma certification. This is a valuable book in my toolbox.

5 out of 5 stars Dimensioning and Tolerancing Handbook.......2000-09-25

This book includes an extraordinary consolidation of cutting edge information and innovative authors that are truly on the "bleeding edge of technology"! Each chapter covers different topic areas by individuals practicing these design techniques and tools in the real world today. The chapters cover everything from an overview of the various quality thursts, to tolerance allocation techniques, to maximizing GD&T, to Statistical tolerancing, to developing process capability models for DFSS (Designing for Six Sigma), and much more. This text is surely one of the best ever compiled as a consolidation of the contained related subject matter. This is a priceless body of knowledge in a single book!

1 out of 5 stars Wait for the NEXT Edition........2000-11-10

"Handbook of Reliability Engineering and Management", Second Edition, Edited by W. Grant Ireson, Clyde F. Coombs, Jr. and Richard Y. Moss, McGraw Hill, 1996.

This is the second edition of the Handbook, which first appeared in 1988. There are individual contributing authors for each of the 27 chapters; the resultant is already out of date. The current "Limbo" status of military documents, such as Military Standard 105 and Military Handbook 217F, makes this present edition of the Handbook out of date in 2000. Will Military Handbook 217F ever be revised to provide up-to-date models for the failure rates of modern electronic components?

This Handbook would benefit from better editing. For example, as a Handbook, it is expected that the index in the back of the physical book would contain page references to pertinent reliability terms and techniques. Today's technology emphasizes Environmental Stress Screening, ESS. The term, ESS, has been around for at least 15 years (or so: I recall doing an IEEE paper on ESS in 1988). It is expected that ESS and related terms such as HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) and HASS, would be readily found in the Handbook's index. They are not.

Same thing holds true for Software Reliability, where the chapter's author uses the cute term, "SMERFS Model" (p. 22.15), but this term will not be found in the index. (SMERFS = Statistical Modeling and estimation of reliability functions for software.) By the way, from a technical point of view, this chapter's half page on the various models for software reliability is very skimpy. For example, Dr. Michael Elbert has written an entire IEEE paper on the selection of the proper model for software reliability. It would be expected that a Handbook would be more complete than just a small portion of a page. In Chapter 22, on Software Reliability, the author references a paper on the Rayleigh curve by "Gaffney" (p. 22.13). The reference at the back of Chapter 22 gives the reference's name as "John Gafney". This is a discrepancy that should have been caught by the editors. I suspect that the correct spelling is "Gaffney", but both can not be correct.

There are other editorial lapses: on page 16.24, Bellcore failure rates are compared to MIL-HDBK-217, and it is state that Bellcore "... provides generally better failure rates than does MIL-HDBK-217F, which is supposedly based on field experience in communications equipment." The way this sentence is presented implies that MIL-HDBK-217F is based upon experience in communications equipment, when, as most reliability practitioners know, MIL-HDBK-217F failure rates are based on environments from Ground, Fixed, to Ground, Benign, to Naval Sheltered and Airborne, etc, and on equipment from radios to radars to sonars, air data computers and fire control units. This inconsistency in the use of the language ought to have been caught by the editors.

On page 16.6, there is a nice comparison of FITs to failures per million hours to %failure per 1000 hours. The Editors should make the reader aware that a billion in American usage (1 with nine zeroes after it) is not the same as European usage. Chapter 6, on FMEAs is totally into the Risk Priority Number method where "gray beards" sit around and use the "Delphi" approach to ascertain the probability of an event, the severity of that failure and whether or not the failure can be detected. This is a very subjective method, and, in my humble opinion, RPN is being superceded by more objective, quantitative methods (see IEC 61508).

In summary, prudent purchasers should await the next edition of this Handbook, if that edition considers all the changes taking place in the availability of military standards and the new leadership role of international standards in the reliability arena. For example, IEC 300, on "Dependability" is not even mentioned.

      Book Description

The purpose of this book is to provide practitioners with the tools necessary to utilize the Weibull distribution for modeling, analysis and problem solving. The book includes both basic and advanced concepts. The underlying theme of keeping the presentations simple was followed throughout the book. Thus, very little mathematical theory is presented. Step by step examples are used to illustrate each technique presented. Practitioners will find easy to follow roadmaps guiding them through every step of an analysis. Since most practitioners are more interested in results rather than how to perform calculations, the majority of roadmaps have been incorporated into a computer program contained on an accompanying disk (Windows 95 or later). In most cases, Microsoft Excel solutions to the examples are also included on an accompanying disk.

This second edition includes more explanation on the benefits and weaknesses of the competing methods for parameter estimation, and tips for which method to use in a given situation. A chapter has been added to address data sets with few or no failures. This chapter also includes a discussion of test design and an algorithm for financially optimizing durability tests.

This book has been written in a manner to accommodate both the novice and the experienced engineer or statistician. The novice can apply the techniques presented by reading the assumptions and application requirements, while the veteran can gain more understanding by reading the mathematical details of the technique.

      Benefits:

The accompanying CD-ROM includes statistical tables, most examples worked in Microsoft Excel, a Windows based software program for Weibull Analysis, and a user's guide for the Weibull software.

5 out of 5 stars The best handbook I've seen on the subject........2003-01-10

Professor Lyu defines, catalogs, explains, and demonstrates concepts and models for reliability. If you're trying to answer questions like "based on historical data, when is the next expected failure," or "what model best predicts my software's reliability," or "when will the software be stable" then you need this book.

True to its name, it is a handbook, so you can jump around and cross reference, but you can also read it like a book.

Note, however, that there is some fairly heavy statistical math. Don't let all the greek letters scare you. It's all explained, and it has a fantastic appendix that covers all you need to know concerning statistics to use the book without the mumbo-jumbo.

To complete your collection, go to the web and obtain a copy of SMERFS^3, which is a software package developed by Dr. William Farr that does all the modeling math for you. Additionally, check out the book Software Reliability by Musa/Iannio/Okumoto (0-07-044093-X). These two things, together with this book will equip you for just about anything you need to measure.

5 out of 5 stars Standard for the field of S/W Reliability.......2001-01-05

This is an excellent technical book that should be a standard reference for anyone working in the field of S/W QA/Reliablity. The work assumes a mathematical background at the upper division/graduate level. The section on orthogonal defect classification is especially good. This is an essential work for anyone compiling metrics for gauging how well a S/W development effort is progressing. Software is supplied for performing one's own analyses. Meaty stuff for the serious S/W QA engineer! Well done.

New @ asq.org for less. Why is it so much higher here?

4 out of 5 stars Useful and Good But ..........2002-09-21

As other reviewers mentioned, Pyzdek can help you make it over the CQE exam hurdle. In fact it is probably helpful for those who wish to clear the CQM or CQT hurdles. It may aslo be a helpful supplament for Six-Sigma folks. The volume also serves competently as a handbook and reference. Importantly, it includes an adequate bibilography so that the reader can easily pursue more specialized or more fundamental soruces.

        But ...

Neither the material nor the presentation distinguishes this book from its many competitors.

Too often the index enties have incorrect page numbers. In an age of computer automated indexing, mistakes of this kind really grate on a reader who expects more. Further, a quality handbook should set a better example!

        2 out of 5 stars OK - but just.......2002-01-12

I bought this book to prepare for the ASQ CQE exam. This was my primary reference book and I did pass the exam - so there must be some merit to this book. However, it is frustrating. My criticisms include:

        - the index doesn't point to the right pages, making it very difficult to use (especially in an open book exam)
        - some of the graphs have no labelling at all (Fig IV.28)
        - some material is repeated (eg central limit theorem)

This book has some good stuff in it and is aimed at getting you through the CQE exam. It will also be useful for a practicing quality engineer. However, it is in many cases separate articles, procedures and discussions stuck together with little flow. A good review and editing would do a lot for this book.

4 out of 5 stars A concise study book for taking and passing the CQE test........1996-10-04

This book has just the right amount of pictures and charts to balance the text. I wanted a study book that would be used as a day to day reference and something that I could use during my CQE test to "jog" my memory. The numerous graphs help me to answer generic SPC problems better than all that verbage found in other "helpful texts".

          Book Description

This unique publication addresses the role of reliability, maintainability, and supportability in the life-cycle of a product, in the context of product effectiveness and worth. It emphasizes all aspects of producing an effective electrical or mechanical system. This is the only handbook available on this subject and the only book that is this comprehensive and informative. The Product Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability Handbook examines the logistics, cost, and the physics of failure-topics never before found in a single volume on reliability. It describes the factors that affect product effectiveness and worth: performance, reliability, design effectiveness and margin for error, availability, affordability, use effectiveness, and logistic effectiveness. The handbook contains 13 in-depth chapters, opening with an introduction on product effectiveness and worth and concluding with reliability and maintainability data that can be combined with performance data to assess overall effectiveness of the product. The pages are filled with valuable information that can be easily and quickly put to practical use.Basic principles of the mathematical theory of probability and necessary background are provided. Concepts and basic theory of reliability in terms of probability and statistical inference are also given. Techniques for deriving probabilistic models from observational data as well as reliability models and associated validation techniques are detailed. Software and software reliability, quality, and safety are all covered, including the development life-cycle process and mechanisms by which software errors are introduced. The book presents design guidelines and techniques and the requirements for materials, manufacturing, and assembly. Learn how to analyze the reliability of redundant and fault-tolerant products. Use the methods for modeling and analyzing failures of repairable products that normally exhibit wearout characteristics. The Product Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability Handbook also provides reliability improvement techniques to improve the competitiveness of existing products. The book includes helpful summaries and numerous problem sections to reinforce and test learned information. This reference source is the guide that professionals and technical managers should turn to when they need a comprehensive and detailed overview of everything that goes into producing systems and products that meet customer needs in an effective and timely manner.
