Book Description
As a consultant, Kiyoshi Suzaki has helped scores of Fortune 500 clients improve manufacturing operations and get the job done faster, cheaper, better, and safer. Now, in this detailed "operating manual" -- full of more step-by-step applications than any other book available -- Suzaki spells out new options in production and employee resources that can help American industry regain the cutting edge in price, quality, and delivery of products.
A well-known expert in the field, Suzaki begins with the premise that "if it doesn't add value, it's waste" -- a concept devised by Henry Ford and later used by Toyota. He recaps what Toyota identifies as the seven most prominent forms of waste in factories. Most importantly, he meticulously details steps individuals can take to "simplify, combine, and eliminate operations" -- thereby reducing waste, improving quality, and saving money.
Describing in detail the basic techniques culled from Japanese industrial philosophy and procedure, Suzaki shows how small, family-run businesses and billion-dollar American corporations from a wide range of industries -- automotive, electronics, cosmetics, and even defense contractors -- are meeting the manufacturing challenge today -- demolishing the widely held belief that most American manufacturers have become distribution organizations for products manufactured overseas. In addition, he links his methodology with several successful production systems, from Just-In-Time Production, Total Quality Control, Total Productive Maintenance to Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Throughout this practical handbook, he places emphasis squarely on the shop floor and grounds his approach in easy, yet powerful techniques everybody can understand and implement today.
Illustrated with numerous charts and exhibits, The New Manufacturing Challenge shows how to integrate people and techniques to improve the workplace and, thus, strengthen any company's competitiveness in the global marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
The best introduction to lean.......2004-11-22
Suzaki's book, like the other introductory texts, describes the operations of factories practicing JIT/lean production, but not how to convert a traditional plant. It describes the destination but not the way to get there. This is appropriate for readers who are new to the subject, and Suzaki writes well enough to retain a manager's attention during air travel.
The Classic that transcended the time.......2003-08-19
I still go back to this now a classic to get the sense out of it. There are many techniques, ideas, but more importantly, it points the appreciation of people engaged in the process of continuous improvement as a core to drive us to move forward. Whatever way people may call this stuff, the person who discovered the principle of improvement cannot but to move on in his life for the betterment.
By the way, there is a 3.5hour video correponding to this book still available at SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers). Read the book, share the examples, confirm the principle, practice the heartbeat of improvement, and keep on moving forward.
Good luck!
Continuous Improvement Principles.......2002-05-23
This is an easy read book with some excellent ideas. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to improve something. The ideas can be used also in service and general life -- although primarily aimed at manufacturing.
And still we have more Japanese authors leaching on to varia.......2001-09-30
This book could have been written by taking exerps from other books on TPS and rearranging the pages. Same old, same old more same old.
We need an American's view on the practicle application of TPS not advice from some guy from Japan who doesn't have the faintest idea of American culture or people. So there!
5 stars plus.......2001-05-17
This is THE book for hands-on actual implementation of lean production techniques. This book answers the difficult problems accompaning implementation of the Toyota Production System. It is written in an easily understood straight-forward style. In my opinion this is the best book on boosting shopfloor efficiency. It does not shy away from discussing the problem areas. The author proves he has "been there and done it". An example is the Kanban system usually described in most books as a sytem where cards control the shop floor work flow. This book describes in detail various Kanban systems to handle the situations where the work flow is interrupted by processes requiring outside vendors or where an operation such as heat treating will slow the process. I rated this book five stars because it discusses real problems and solutions.

Book Description
In this first comprehensive departure from the time-and-motion dictums of Frederick Taylor's Shop Management that have influenced management practices for most of this century, Kiyoshi Suzaki offers a framework for successfully conducting business at its most crucial point-the shop floor. Drawing on the principles of holistic management, where organizational boundaries are smashed and co-destiny is created, Suzaki demonstrates how modern shop floor management techniques -- focusing maximum energy on the front line -- can lead to dramatic improvements in productivity and valueadded-to-services.
The role of management today, Suzaki argues, is to eliminate its own responsibilities by thinking of the organization from the genba, or shop floor, point of view. In this challenge, Suzaki claims, organizations need to collect the wisdom of people by practicing "Glass Wall Management," where organizations become transparent, enabling employees to contribute maximum creativity as opposed to blocking their potential with what he calls "Brick Wall Management." Further, to empower individuals to selfmanage their work and satisfy their customers, Suzaki asserts that they all should learn to manage their own "mini-company," where everybody is considered president of his or her area of responsibility.
Front-line supervisors, Suzaki shows, must develop a mission and goals and share them both up and downstream. He cites examples of the "shop floor point of view" -- McDonald's Corporation's legal staff learning how to sell hamburgers and fix milkshake machines; Honda's human resource staff training on the assembly line -- that narrow the gap between top management and the shop floor. By upgrading people's skills, focusing on empowerment, and streamlining processes, Suzaki illustrates that an organization will realize concrete improvements in quality, cost, delivery, safety, morale, and ultimately, its competitive position.
Customer Reviews:
I had to grow up to understand...........2006-05-24
It may sound unlikely, but ... I worked in the company which had implemented the NSFM! Unfortunately:
1. NSFM has detoriated now, and it is never more the NSFM company.
2. I understand what NSFM is all about after 3 years since I left this NSFM company. Now I try to implement NSFM based on this book. The book is very helpful unless to change people mind is long-term work (for years not months, esp. when you are mid-manager, so you have to work in both direction - towards top exec. and down).
Worth reading, understanding and implementing.... (togehter with lean manufacturing).
Holistic?.......2001-12-04
This guy must be from outer space!
His junk will not fly in our factories, I guarantee it!
Book has stood the test of time.......2000-12-09
I had a copy of this book for years and lost it recently. Although I remember so much of it by heart I bought another copy as it is one of the most timeless, relevant and clearly written books on deploying visual production controls. I thought that was testimony enough to the value of the book.
Just in Demand.......2000-05-23
It is a hit book just feed readers' needs - especially for value chain or Costing saving research.

Kanban Just-In-Time at Toyota: Management Begins at the Workplace
ASIN: 0471132667 |
Book Description
Based on his extensive experience Sandras reveals a complete procedure for successfully managing all of the challenges and possible obstacles in an actual implementation. Organizing the implementation team, developing a working Kanban system, restructuring the shop floor, creating efficient connections between suppliers and customers, measuring performance and integrating JIT with TQM are among the issues discussed.
Customer Reviews:
waste of money.......2005-08-24
Don't buy this book. The book doesn't have any new insights. I found the book very useless.
A great introduction to JIT world.......2000-08-02
This is a great introduction to JIT. It covers main issues as the core knowlodge of this technique as well as the implementation cornerstones. It's an easy to read way to get a handle on this planning and production control. It has also tried to get a compromise with MRP without forgeting currently popular topics as the link to suppliers and customers. As a plus, there are some chapters for problem solving using quality control techniques as storyboards which are actually useful in many others environments and areas.
The book is an excellent guide to JIT implementation........1999-05-25
Just-In-Time:Making It Happen can be an invaluable guide to implementing JIT principles in the manufacturing environment. Although it is not a cookbook, it does provide a comprehensive step-by-step to understanding and implementing a workable JIT process. Perhaps the most valuable contribution of the book is the way it demonstrates that JIT processes can coexist with MRP effectively. Sandras defines those functions that need to be incorporated in the MRP System to most effectively interface with and support JIT. However, he also describes how the MRP System can be manually augmented to allow their coexistence. But what I liked best was the practitioner's understanding of the problems facing the JIT implementer.
Good, mostly based on real life experiences.......1999-01-23
Gives a very good insight into JIT, making you aware of the zillion things manufacturing companies can (still!!) do to avoid waste. The book, however, does not prepare you for actual implementation. For that to happen, there is nothing to replace being an 'insider' in the manufacturing environment.

Book Description
This text is developed and written for an intermediate/advanced course in Operations Management or Manufacturing Planning and Control. This course will be found in the better undergraduate programs in the MBA curriculum as an elective, or in Industrial or manufacturing engineering departments. The text will compete indirectly with MRP based books such as Vollmann et al, Fogarty/Hoffman, or McLeavey/Narasimhan in most cases because of the business emphasis, but may also appeal to Nahmias and/or Hopp/Spearman adopters. The CMM text covers all aspects of modern manufacturing management with emphasis on the recent strategic approaches such as JIT and TQM and within a style and level of rigor appropriate for business students
