5 out of 5 stars good explaination in the book.......2007-10-15

each chapter is well written, not dry to read, easy to understand. although they should probably write a new version using office 2007 excel.

5 out of 5 stars The best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook.......2005-06-24

This textbook is the best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook currently available on the market today. The Excel instructions are self explanatory and include every step needed to apply a particular statistical procedure. The instructions for calculating joint probability tables and constructing tree diagrams are excellent and easy to follow. The example problems include all the steps. The notation used is simple, direct and straightforward. It will not cause any confusion for a student. The handling of p-values in hypothesis testing and multiple regression analysis is very well done.Based on my extensive teaching experience at the college and university level,I would highly recommend this book to a student, who is taking a statistics course that emphasizes applications, at the intermediate to advanced level.

Book Description

In recent years portfolio optimization and construction methodologies have become an increasingly critical ingredient of asset and fund management, while at the same time portfolio risk assessment has become an essential ingredient in risk management, and this trend will only accelerate in the coming years. Unfortunately there is a large gap between the limited treatment of portfolio construction methods that are presented in most university courses with relatively little hands-on experience and limited computing tools, and the rich and varied aspects of portfolio construction that are used in practice in the finance industry. Current practice demands the use of modern methods of portfolio construction that go well beyond the classical Markowitz mean-variance optimality theory and require the use of powerful scalable numerical optimization methods. This book fills the gap between current university instruction and current industry practice by providing a comprehensive computationally-oriented treatment of modern portfolio optimization and construction methods. The computational aspect of the book is based on extensive use of S-Plus®, the S+NuOPT™ optimization module, the S-Plus Robust Library and the S+Bayes™ Library, along with about 100 S-Plus scripts and some CRSP® sample data sets of stock returns. A special time-limited version of the S-Plus software is available to purchasers of this book.

“For money managers and investment professionals in the field, optimization is truly a can of worms rather left un-opened, until now! Here lies a thorough explanation of almost all possibilities one can think of for portfolio optimization, complete with error estimation techniques and explanation of when non-normality plays a part. A highly recommended and practical handbook for the consummate professional and student alike!”

Steven P. Greiner, Ph.D., Chief Large Cap Quant & Fundamental Research Manager, Harris Investment Management

“The authors take a huge step in the long struggle to establish applied post-modern portfolio theory. The optimization and statistical techniques generalize the normal linear model to include robustness, non-normality, and semi-conjugate Bayesian analysis via MCMC. The techniques are very clearly demonstrated by the extensive use and tight integration of S-Plus software. Their book should be an enormous help to students and practitioners trying to move beyond traditional modern portfolio theory.”

Peter Knez, CIO, Global Head of Fixed Income, Barclays Global Investors

“With regard to static portfolio optimization, the book gives a good survey on the development from the basic Markowitz approach to state of the art models and is in particular valuable for direct use in practice or for lectures combined with practical exercises.”

5 out of 5 stars Customer Service.......2007-03-28

I have got a very good and prompt service and response from Amazon for the book ordered.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent academic treatise a little less useful for practitioners........2007-01-28

I will admit to being torn between four and five stars for this book. I ultimately deduct a star because of: the lack of any sign of the promised web registration key for downloading the 150 day trial software and data, the heavy use of NuOPT where vanilla S/R code would have been sufficient and possibly even easier to understand, and the frequent use by the authors of providing symbolic solutions from Scherer's 2000 book on optimization where implementation is "left as an excercise".

The book dispenses with traditional Markowitz mean-variance optimization in the first chapter, and then moves on to many other methods of optimization for different types of portfolios, asset classes, and investor utility functions. All of this is excellent, comprising the broadest treatment in a single title that I am aware of.

The book makes heavy use of NuOPT, an add-on package for S-Plus from Insightful, and the SIMPLE linear programming included with NuOPT. I was disappointed that the authors make no effort to work problems without NuOPT, even when simplex or other methods would solve the problems presented in more elegant manner.

I was most disappointed that the authors often leave implementation to the reader. Every chapter has "Exercises" at the end. This is fine. I don't think it is fine to discuss the symbolic solution of a problem (like several of the scenario optimization methods discussed in Chapter 5), and then leave as an excercise the implementation of those portfolio solutions in S-PLUS, SIMPLE, or NuOPT. Nearly every chapter has a significant section, usually lifted largely from Scherer's 2000 book, that suffers from this deficiency. It is almost as if the publishers were pushing for a draft, and the authors went through and "left as exercises" whatever they didn't have tested code for.

All my negatives left to the side, this is still the best treatment you'll find in a single title on many issues of portfolio optimization under varying conditions today. Buy this book if you work in portfolio optimization with S-Plus or R.

5 out of 5 stars great reference.......2005-09-09

The best book on this subject. It provides both an excellent up-to-date overview of the relevant literature and an application-oriented perspective. The chapter on robust estimation is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable text!.......2006-09-10

It has been motive of special interest in this semester to have found this text. In my section of Statistics for students of Adverting, Exterior Commerce, Administration and Informatics, due it contains the always considered material of extreme difficulty and troublesome analysis for most of people who has to confront this subject.

The theory is exposed with clarity, zealous programmed, with abundant visual diagrams as well as a set of adjusted and concerning problems related with their field.

So please, take my advise and try to get as soon as possible.

I certificate it!.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book.......2004-10-06

This book is terrible. It doesn't feel like a coherent work, there are several typos within the text itself and the "solutions" to the odd problems in the back are incorrect in some cases. It does not explain the material clearly at all. If it weren't for my professor I would be totally lost. Don't misunderstand me, I make A's and B's in all my other classes (Finance, Accounting, Management, Algebra, etc.) and I know I can learn this material, but not from this gibberish. The book itself is not even aesthetically pleasing in its layout. I may be just nit picking on that last point but for over a $100 price tag I think I am allowed to be.

Just from reading the content in the book I gather that the author is from the Oregon/Washington area. Kind of makes you wonder who made the amazing review of it first..........

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!! I finally understand!!.......2004-08-28

This book by John E. Freund just made a lot of sense. I took stats a few years ago and did well, but was lost in a couple concepts. This book explained in laymen terms and allowed the reader to ask the questions in his or her head and find the answer not much farther in the book.
I love the statistics discipline anyway, so it probably means I seek out this type of information.
If you are looking for a great addition to your college text or just want to have some light reading, buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent introductory text.......2003-05-19

One of the clearest introductory textbooks on probability & statistics. It compares well with Freedman & Purvis's "Statistics" in clarity of presentation. In one respect Freund improves on Freedman by not being afraid to show students the actual formulas to use for solving problems. (Another good intro is Russell Langley's "Practical Statistics".)

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2003-04-18

I used this book to study for the Excelsior College's Introductory Statistics exam (college credit by examination, former Regents'), and got the maximum. I had the 9th (revised) edition, published in 1997.

Only knowledge of elementary algebra is required; no calculus whatsoever is needed here.

The book contains 17 chapters; for this exam I only needed about 13. Broad outline of content: summarizing data, probabilities and possibilities, expectations and decisions, probability distributions, normal distribution, sampling distributions, inferences about means/standard deviations/proportions, analysis of variance, regression, correlation, nonparametric tests.

I very much appreciated the way that the content was organized: easy to read, very structured, with clear and detailed examples. At the end of each chapter or minichapter - questions and problems.

Totally unnecessary, and outdated, are the computer generated examples that pop out now and then throughout the book.

In conclusion, highly recommended.

Book Description

The generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation has emerged over the past decade as providing a ready to use, flexible tool of application to a large number of econometric and economic models by relying on mild, plausible assumptions. The principal objective of this volume, the first devoted entirely to the GMM methodology, is to offer a complete and up to date presentation of the theory of GMM estimation as well as insights into the use of these methods in empirical studies. It is also designed to serve as a unified framework for teaching estimation theory in econometrics. Contributors to the volume include well-known authorities in the field based in North America, the UK/Europe, and Australia.

Book Description

About two hundred and forty years ago, an English clergyman named Thomas Bayes developed a method to calculate the chances of uncertain events in the light of accumulating evidence. Though his method has extensive applications to the work of economists, it is only recent advances in computing that have made it possible to exploit its full power. In this new and expanding area, Tony Lancaster 's text provides a comprehensive introduction to the Bayesian way of doing applied economics. Using clear explanations and practical illustrations and problems, the text presents innovative, computer-intensive ways for applied economists to use the Bayesian method. In addition, each chapter includes numerical and graphical examples and demonstrates their solutions using the S programming language and Bugs software.

I found this book in the library and it is much better. It gives very clear explanations of the ideas, and lots of concrete worked examples. Props to the author.

If you are looking for a book for Bayesian estimation, this is the one. The first several chapters say it all about Bayesian methods. The rest of the book is applications. Very helpful reading for learning the method.

Product Description

Marketing in the early 21st century is dominated by two approaches, neither of which is visible to the naked eye: the use of data to define and shape human affairs into machine-readable form and the effort to create and sustain ongoing two-way relationships with customers. The former is one way human life is being subjugated to the regime of the machine; the latter is one way the individual may one day emerge from within the datascape. A post-modern perspective is used to reveal both the "kaleidoroscope" of data and the "raw immaterials" of relationships in two companion essays.

Rebecca's review is spot-on. I could read this book several times and get something new out of it each time. Ellis succinctly captures the changes in consumer-marketer interaction and the new 21st century value exchange and does a great job of putting it in historical and philosophical context.

5 out of 5 stars Big Thoughts on Marketing .......2007-03-09

Most books on business (particularly those by self-proclaimed "gurus") seize on a single idea. With terrier-like tenacity they explain it, illustrate it, present case studies of it, then explain it yet again, until a readers feels she's entered some sort of textual version of "Groundhog's Day."

"Marketing in the In-Between," takes the opposite approach. It packs so many clusters of thought, ideas, revelations and connections on every page, the reader will need to repeatedly dip in to glean all the thoughts. It challenges readers to truly ponder and to question the basic precepts and practices upon which marketing is based.

      Book Description

This new econometrics text deals specifically with the use of econometric software. The text takes the reader from the various forms of econometric data (time series, cross sectional and panel), through their formatting in electronic media (eg ASCII) to their transfer to and use in widely used software packages--Excel, Microfit and Eviews. Most economics degrees now require students to use relevant software to test econometric models and this text illustrates clearly how this is to be done.
