5 out of 5 stars In a world of diminishing quality, THIS BOOK SHINES!.......2007-08-25

Long, verbose, time consuming and WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT!

Was an assigned text for an upper level university Management course. Excellent choice. The content made sense, was well written/easy to read, and continually built on earlier chapters.

It's still on my shelf as a reference I refer to often in my business. Wouldn't be without it!

5 out of 5 stars Like off the shelf new.......2006-03-18

Came quickly with the software package included.
Saved over $20 from school bookstore website!

5 out of 5 stars It is really a Quality book.......2005-09-30

It is straightforward book. Each chapter has some case study, which is real application of Quality management. I would strongly recommend for students as well as managers to read this book. It has different point of views from various Philosophers like Dr. Deming, Dr. Juran, Crosby and other well-known persons.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this textbook .......2005-07-27

I used an older edition of this book in preparing for the ASQ Certified Quality Manager Exam. It is a great reference.

3 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive book!.......2004-02-23

This is a required book in Keller Graduate School of Management for GM588 (Managing Quality). It is an exceptionally comprehensive title.

Book Description

Operations Management, 7/e surveys the field of operations in both the services and manufacturing sectors. Provides enhanced coverage from the strategies of designing a product or service, through the processes and systems of making and delivering the product, and controlling the operations. All the standard topics are covered with concepts and supporting examples, problems, cases, and appropriate current news clips and readings. Stevenson highlights the very important role Operations plays in today’s business world with concise coverage of concepts such as JIT, TQM, supply chain management with more thorough integration of services and increased use of real world examples. All basic quantitative techniques are presented, many in supplements that can be highlighted or bypassed depending on the course structure, and all are supported with step-by-step examples and solved problems, many including example solutions built into Excel spreadsheets. The text is the most widely adopted of any for the introductory course mainly due to the balanced coverage and clearly explained concepts.

the book is written with a lot of unnecessary details that are just common sense. The exersises are ok but too much stuff that was not important

4 out of 5 stars Easy text to follow.......2002-03-07

Used in MSCI classes. Easy text to follow with alot of examples, no case studies though. The most valuable item though is the student cd-rom. It's a great tool, especially the excel worksheets-which are easy to use. Explore the cd-rom and you'll know what I mean.

Book Description

Operations Management: Contemporary Concepts and Cases, is an ideal book for the instructor seeking a short text with cases. This book employs a cross-functional perspective, appealing to non-majors and practical for use in an MBA level course in operations management. The size and price of the book also make the text attractive for the cross-functional curriculum where students are required to purchase more than one text. The cases offer variety in length and rigor; and several are from Harvard and Darden. This mix makes the book appropriate for both undergraduates and MBA students.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good supplementary text .......2006-01-26

Schroeder has written a very good broad, introductory text that can be effectively used in three different ways. The book can be used as an introduction to operations management for non business or liberal arts majors. The second way that the book can be used is as a supplement to the Knod-Schonberger book or the Stevenson book. The management case studies section at the end of the book is excellent .However, it is not recommended that this book be used as a core textbook in a formal operations management course in a business department curriculum unless the instructor intends to supplement the students reading with numerous technical handouts. For instance,a handout on basic cost-volume analysis must have already been digested by the student before he could make any sense out of the example or exercise problems in chapter 12(Facilities and Aggregate Planning). Shroeder may have assumed that the reader of his text will already have completely mastered many/most of the basic operations management tools and techniques. This should be the case in graduate level courses;the book would be a useful supplement in MBA courses.

    Book Description

Previously known as Fundamentals of Operations Management, Operations Management: Integrating Manufacturing and Services offers a broad and relatively non-quantitative overview of the field of operations management and provides a “big picture” perspective that should appeal to a variety of business majors—not just those students majoring in operations management. Reflecting the background of the authors, Operations Management: Integrating Manufacturing and Services has the strongest coverage of services of any introductory book on the market. The treatment of both manufacturing and services, as the new title suggests, is again more fully integrated than other competing textbooks.

I would not order anything from Amazon because they do not follow through on their advertised shipping. Free shipping is a joke especially since Amazon stated shipment in less than a day but in reality it would be over a week and the book would not get to me before the second week of class.

3 out of 5 stars Reassessing My Earlier Thoughts.......2004-05-01

I have previously reviewed this book, but have recently read it again, and am reassessing my opinions on it. While I still hold most of my earlier opinions, I have a couple of other insights after the second reading.

First, the PowerPoint slides on the included CD are very useful, and are generally well done, but they do contain a number of errors, which should have definitely been caught.

Second, the book gets more mathematically oriented as it goes on, and by the time the reader gets to about Chapter 9, the book makes so many assumptions about mathematical background (that may not be safely assumed, even in Business schools) that the example problems and, more importantly, explanations given, are very difficult to grasp: the chapter on forecasting is the peak of indecipherability. Some problems will just say something like 'using calculus...' and then show what happened as a result (this is especially true in the PowerPoint slides, by the way). What I am saying is that people who have recently had advanced calculus and statistics won't have a problem, but anyone who has been away from higher math for a couple of years will struggle.

Third, many of the case studies, while very well written and illuminating, are clearly taken from company specific corporate public relations fodder. In other words, they frequently read like propaganda. Don't get me wrong, I very much like the case studies, they just seem a bit stilted, though frequently they are the strongest part of a chapter.

Fourth, the book is absolutely strewn with buzzwords. I understand the needs to use specific terms to define specific concepts, and these authors are far from being alone in this misdeed, but sometimes speaking clear English actually helps a student understand the information. I absolutely draw the line when the authors call 'eyeballing' a line on a graph "Ocular Heuristic Approximation" (OHA). (Just a tip for the authors before they write the next edition.)

Finally, the book is filled with color and expensive printing tricks throughout, like color type, inset boxes, lots of color graphs and charts (some of which are redundant), and the like. My point here is that this stuff, while generally nice to look at is not value added, and dramatically raises the price of the book (mine was $135.00) with no increase in value to the students. For Mr. Chase and the rest of the authors: read your own book. Understand what the consumer (in this case students) want and need, and write that book. Don't fill a book with tons of color and fancy typographical tricks and drive the price through the roof. There are many other Operations Management books available for half the price and I recommended a couple of specific titles in my course critique. The book may look nice, but it isn't worth this price.

In summation, I now give this book three stars. It is very comprehensive, and there is a lot of good information between it's covers. If you can grasp the advanced math, put up with the buzzwords, and deal with paying $135 for a single book, this really isn't too bad.

    Book Description

This text provides a survey of the most innovative techniques and methods for managing operations in services and manufacturing. It presents all concepts with a real-world perspective based on the extensive global consulting work of the lead author, Dick Schonberger. This text is unique due to its customer-focused approach. Using the authors 15 principles as a framework for organizing the text This text stresses teamwork, quality, and customer service in both manufacturing and services, as well as traditional topics such as product and service design, purchasing, inventory, location and layout, and scheduling are also included. Quantitative coverage is de-emphasized.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best general undergraduate treatment of operations management-4.5 stars.......2006-01-26

Knod and Schonberger have written the best general text available on production/operations management at the undergraduate level. The text has very good chapters on Capacity Planning(aggregate capacity planning),Scheduling,Design(reliability and serviceability),Quality and process control(especially pp.318-322 on mean and range charts and pp.327-330 on process capability analysis),Inventory control,Timing(waiting lines and queues),and PERT.A minor weakness is that a discussion of the use of the Beta distribution in PERT analysis is omitted from the book.Anyone who covers this book throughly will be very well prepared to take senior level undergraduate courses and graduate level courses in operations management.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed - good survey and quan, weaker on soft subjects.......1999-01-06

Fairly good survey book. Having an undergrad operations background, I found this book mirrored the strengths and weaknesses of a more detailed operations curriculum. Book is best in framework and quantitative model overviews, weaker on softer subjects like staffing, project management, & holistic quality.

    1 out of 5 stars Highly over-rated . Full of fluff.......1997-10-22

If your MBA professor offers Schonberger as the answer to 21st Century Operations Management, seek a transfer quick. Obsessed with a touchy-feeling "quality paradigm", there is not enough meat here to frighten off the most zealous vegetarian. The chapters on "managing projects" and "facilities management" are especially shallow.

1 out of 5 stars I've never read a book that sucks more than this one does.......2003-12-08

Pointless formulas, impossible to find actual definitions, book is full of outdated real world references (ex: referring to online purchasing as a new fangled idea). I've never been so confused by a text in my life. I DO NOT recommend this book. It was a required text for my service management class and NOBODY was happy with the text. It almost annoyingly uses Texas as a reference for nearly all analogies. The only thing good about it was how highly it spoke of Amazon.com!

5 out of 5 stars Its implementable, I used it so much it needed recovering.......1999-07-21

This is not the first services management Text I have read or the First Management text. The imposed shake up in the health professions has created a need to take on new learnings in a discipline I was not used too. However as I read I was able to understand and classify services. The wholistic view given in the first chapters allowed me to define my purpose and mission, define the characteristics and benefits of my service and create a service package. I was able to apply this through the service concept and focus on my delivery system creating a strategic plan centered around my clients. Its chapeters on quality allowed me to understand the concept of quality its content and purpose in respect of my business and implement a quality plan. It shed new light on the interactions between employees, organisations and clients. This allowed me to create strategies to improve employee satisfaction. The chapters on The physical facitity allowed me to redesign the physical environment of my service, improving employee and customer satisfaction. Capacity and demand and the handling of waiting times, is so important and the book takes time on these subjects. Conceptualy I was able to design and develope a service reflecting the type and standard of service I was in. This would not have been possible without the background theory, models and formulae supplied by the authors. They package their message in a form I understood. The models and diagrams are particularly good as are the referencing. Although the case studies weren't that relevant as I had my own organisation to test the readings on I still feel they would be valuable to the aspiring student, and it has changed forever my perception of the service encounter both as supplier and participant. The chapters and pieces on IT were important and its role in customisation of services and identifying added value areas and potential new markets are not to be missed.

I would recommend it as a first text and as a core text to cover all the gaps missed or misunderstood in other texts. The depth is such that you get to choose how far you go. If its too much then you stop. A word of warning it took me a year to read not because it was difficult but because clarity of thought can take time. Still my bank manger on seeing my final work stopped short and said.."You can actually do this stuff" If its results you want then this is a good place to start.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not for OM majors.......2001-09-25

This books does a good job supporting a contemporary approach to Operations management. It does not assume everybody wants to major in Om nor does it assume everybody wants to go into manufacturing. It is very readable and does a good job helping the studetn understand the basic trade-offs of OM.
