Do not buy this CRAM book........2007-01-22
If you want to understand and pass a subject, you have to read the original book (here Introduction to Statistical Quality Control by Montgomery) and try to understand the examples and the concepts in the book. In addition you have to do several exercies in this book to reinforce this understanding. Studying some outlines, highlights and notes prepared by other people won't help you much.
Sacred Book on SQC.......2007-01-12
If you are looking to be well versed on the principle of Statistical Quality Control, then you need this book.
Great SPC book.......2004-08-14
Used this book in a graduate level course on SPC. The book and the excercises were interesting and highly informative, as are all of Dr. Montgomery's numerous texts. Most concepts are backed up with liberal examples to help understand the theory and cement the concept and their practical applications, and run the whole gamut from management to electrical engineering problems. Many of the tables in the back of the book, such as the random number table, are outdated due to computers, however these may have been dropped in the new version of the text.
good book worst service.......2004-06-30
the book is very good ..no doubt but the service is aweful.
1. on the website they show it is a hardcover book and so i ordered for it but got a soft cover book ...now i have to worry about return or refunds etc...
2. had to wait for 3 weeks to get the book.
3. print quality aweful ...the original book has good color print...the one i received for the same price has a black and white print with very thin see-through pages...
my advice would be to avoid abebooks.com through amazon if possible because the same book is listed for $ 33 on their own website and here they sell it for $ 41 ...so waste ur money if u want.
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about SPC.......2003-09-12
As the developer of the QI Macros SPC Software for Excel, customers often call with exotic questions about statistical methods for quality control.
Montgomery's book, more often than not, is the one I turn to for answers that I can't seem to find anywhere else. Even if I do find the answer in another book, it's always easier to understand in Montgomery's. The book is written in a way that makes seemingly incomprehensible statistics understandable. And there are plenty of examples.
If you're looking for a book to help you implement quality control in a small business, Montgomery's book is a bit too much, so you might consider my book on the Small Business Guerrilla Guide to Six Sigma or Six Sigma Simplified.

DOE step by step with examples.......2006-10-28
DOE is the set of process improvement tools for studying more than one factor in a single experiment. The 92 page book is straight forward with many examples to show the methodology for setting up 2, 3 and up to 31 factor experiments which according to the author will cover >90% of the DOE requirements.
The workbook is filled with case studies and examples from manufacturing problems which guide you through the process and help evaluate your understanding before moving to the next section. The mathematical/statistical equations are a bit intimidating but these can be set-up in a spreadsheet. The author says that these DOE tools can be used on office or sales processes but never gives an example of one.
The value in this book is if you are doing a quality or six sigma project. Also, it will be of value if you are working in industries like chemical or mining, where yields are the key to success. The book shows the equations to use, the eight steps for analysis and the logical steps to creating an experiment. Additionally, it includes an appendix with T (95% confidence level) and F (degree of freedom) values which are necessary references if you attempt to do this without a statistical software package.
This book is headed in the right direction..........1999-09-09
This is the second least complicated book I have ever read on DOE. Thanks Larry for writing the book! I wish that it had MANY more examples showing each DOE type he covers...Also, there is a need to FURTHER elaborate in simpler terms all of the concepts. I am still not understanding why a DOE book can't come out that isn't easy to read!

An easy-to-use, comprehensive guide to systems engineering methods.
Systems engineering (SE), or the engineering of large-scale systems, is key to achieving reliable, efficient, cost-effective products and services in diverse fields, including communication and network systems, software engineering, information systems, manufacturing, command and control, and defense systems acquisition and procurement. This book offers a unique introduction to the world of systems engineering, focusing on analysis and problem-solving techniques that can be applied throughout the life cycle of product systems and service systems. While the authors provide a framework for the functional levels involved in systems engineering processes and system management, the bulk of the discussion is devoted to the practical application of formulation, analysis, and interpretation methods.
Through the use of real-world examples and useful graphs, readers will learn to:
- Choose the most appropriate methods and tools for a given project
- Apply issue formulation methods to assure that the right problem has been identified
- Work with formal analysis methods to assure that the problem is solved correctly
- Apply issue interpretation methods to insure that decisions reflect human values and technological realities, and thereby make interpretation work for them in the decision-making process
- Develop an appreciation for the engineering and troubleshooting of large systems

sage is the gold standard for SE .......2005-12-08
.
.
Andy Sage is the gold standard for SE.
As a fellow of INCOSE he clearly knows SE.
His classes are always informative and up to date.
He is currently working on the cutting edge of Systems Architecture. We can only hope that his notes, which are locked behind GMUs firewall and webct, will be turned into a book.
He edited the Handbook of SE as well as editing the incose journal. If he says it, you can take it to the bank.
Unfortunately this book is 6 years old now and Armstrong is not in Sage's league, but Andy can turn anyone's drafts into good material. So while good, the weakness is that this book does not reflect the changing view and emphasis of SE.
This is not to fault Professor Sage, but merely reflects the fact that even incose cannot agree on what SE is, and that the govt which drives most of SE efforts keeps changing their emphasis. incose even keeps rewriting their handbook as the internal power struggles bring to power different groups with different views of what SE is.
The dirty truth is that there are NO good SE books. There are a lot of books on SE that have some good stuff in them but none does the job right and/or is up to date enough.
Should you read this book. Probably yes. Along with several others, and then extract your own summary of what is pertinent as most of them have way too much filler and wander off into detailed areas of interest only to the authors.
There are a lot of handbooks and reference materials on the web, mostly from govt sites. Some has some excellent content, many are grossly out of date or totally spurious. Especially the OF material from professors at universities who have not kept up to date and still promulgate their 40 year old ideas. Put all together there is a lot fo good info on SE somewhere out there. We can only hope that someone of Sage's ability will finally put it all together. Dr. Sage is probably getting too old to address this and also his current efforts on systems Architecture. Jim Long has promised a good intro book and he is one person that could pull it off well. But he seems to always have a higher priority alligator nipping at him.
If the IEEE were to get serious about systems as the keystone to making software work right then they might be able to sponsor a good reference book. That will likely be some years in the future.
KISS.......2004-11-20
Quiz time:
You have 60 seconds to determine what the following sentence means:
"Systems engineering processes should support operational product functionality, revisability, and transitioning, both at the initial time of operational implementation and later at the time that a system is phased out of service or retired, or reengineered for continued productivity and use."
Times up. If you took more than 60 seconds in my shop, you're fired. Halfway through this sentence I would have realized that my time would have been wasted, and I would have moved on. NO ONE in the engineering world should be caught writing such unintelligable gobbledegook. This sentence nailed it for me - I WON'T be pursuing a Masters in "Engineering Management" (largely consisting of 'systems engineering')- my application to ODU is in the trash...
Now, to be fair, there is value in understanding the necessity of managing methods and tools for large scale systems development, but not at the expense of the English language and good old fashioned simplicity. I would have said:
"From conception to obsolescence, your tools for a product's management had better work and/or improve, or else, <cue Mr. Trump...>.

Good content - suffers from too many errors.......2002-08-25
I wish the proof readers of the book would have done a better job. The potential to be an excellent piece of work on the topic is lost by the numerous errors in several chapters.
Customer Reviews:
If you're reading this, you probably need this book........2003-08-31
This is about the only publication of Taguchi's theories that you'll be able to buy for pocket-change. Though I haven't finished it yet, it strongly resembles the contents of a seminar that used to cost more than $3,000 -- if you can remember how to use a textbook, then this is a bargain. If you've had advanced algebra, intermediate stats, or basic calculus, you should be able to handle the equations.
Taguchi's breakthrough is to evolve a method of quasi-statistical analysis (strongly resembling some elements of catastrophe theory & chaos dynamics) that can efficiently pare a multivariate real-world problem down to small handful of most-likely sets.
Don't think assembly lines here. I was introduced to Taguchi as a possible solution for consulting on how to best apply a shrinking advertising budget: you've got X dollars for the year, you can expand/cut staff, you can do billboards or flyers, TV large- or small-market, peak or way-dark hours, direct mail or Internet... or some combination of varying amounts. In short, constraining each variable to a few choices, & with a finite budget, still left literally millions of possible combinations.
It may take a few hours of head-pounding, but an understanding of Taguchi's methods might save your company thousands, or even millions.

Great learning source.......2006-07-30
I found this book to be a good source for review on how the author came up with the formulas and MINI-TAB references were good. I would have rated it 5 stars but there were settings in the MINI-TAB software that needed to be turned on and for a beginning student I found it a little difficult to come up with the same answers without knowing why the author used the non-default mini-tab settings.

An excellent resource for Acceptance Sampling.......1999-12-16
I have struggled over acceptance sampling terminology and concepts over the years.. almost the whole duration of my student life in the USA, and working life in Malaysia both in the industry and the academia.
This book explains very clearly the interpretation and use of the OC curves. It tells me especially what AQL and LTPD are, it also tells me why the producer's risk is related to AQL while LTPD is related to consumer's risk (read page 79-80).
This is the first time in my academic career (as a lecturer in the Malaysia Science University) that I have gone further (and more confidently) in explaining about OC curves. This book has certainly enlightened me v-e-r-y m-u-c-h on acceptance sampling. I have actually used many different books for my other operations management classes but I hit the wall when I come to OC curves.
This book also proves my assumption about the sigma in Cpk wrong (read page 70 line #1.) Had it not been for this book, I would have continued to assume that the sigma (in Cpk) is the same sigma as in variance (sigma squared).
This book is succint. Straight to the point and in clear language. The authors do not "beat around the bush". The figures clearly explain the concepts talked about in a particular section for example fig 5.5, and also figure on page 73.
This book has enlightened me, and uncovered many of my wrong assumptions. More to go. Yet to savor the rest of the book.
I would certainly recommend this book to practitioners or students who are serious about quality.

Book Description
Environmentally Improved Production Processes and Products introduces students at institutes of higher education, company management, civil servants, professional designers and process engineers to the field of environmentally oriented product and process improvement. The book deals with improvements that are integrated into processes and products. It differs from other books currently available in that it covers both production and products. It is also different because both social/economic and technical aspects of the improvement of products and production processes are dealt with, rather than the more usual focus either on technical or on social and/or economic aspects. Another characteristic is the wide range of production processes and products covered, ranging from bakeries to olive growing, from nuclear power plants to glues, from office chairs to breweries, and from television sets to steel plants. Geographical coverage ranges from Sweden to China and from India to Italy and the USA.
