Customer Reviews:
An excellent contribution to the "Inside-SQL" series.......2007-10-09
This is the 2nd book of the 4 part "Inside-SQL" series, with each book I imagine, appealing to a different reader. Having a programming background, I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series ("The Storage Engine"), which on it's own is also an excellent book.
As mentioned in other reviews, this book is definitely not for beginners. The authors assumes a basic level of SQL knowledge from the reader as he launches into complex Transact-SQL examples - unlike most books which start the reader with simple SQL examples and progress through to complex ones.
While reading this book, it was easy to compare it's contents with Ken Henderson's popular "A Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL", with the latter book becoming more and more outdated by the improvements in Transact-SQL since it was published. If you're a fan of Henderson, you will quickly become a fan of Itzik.
A benefit of this book is that unlike most SQL 2005 books, this is not an update on SQL 2000 material, but instead starts at the 2005 level. The author focuses on the new syntax introduced in SQL 2005, and then, moves onto older SQL 2000 syntax and compares both the complexity and the performance differences between the two. This itself is invaluable to those of use that code in Transact-SQL and feel more comfortable using the "old ways". This book highlights how the new syntax is in fact simpler and more efficient - we just need to take the time and effort to understand and become familiar with the new language changes.
The book starts by discussing the logical processing of a SELECT statement, which helps the reader to understand the hows and whys of writing a query. I finally understood why I can't use an expression's alias in a WHERE BY or GROUP BY clause (as the SELECT line is one of the last parts of the statement to be processed). Throughout the book, the author often defines a problem and allows the reader to formulate an appropriate solution. He then reveals MULTIPLE solutions and explains why each is good or bad. The book ends with a selection of "logic puzzles" that test the reader's ability to solve logical problems. This was both fun and informative.
After reading this book, I found myself changing the way I constructed SQL queries at work - for the better!
Pedantic.......2007-09-20
The MS SQL books have dramatically risen in quality in a few short years. When SQL 7 and 2000 were released, there were may be 1-3 book which were truly outstanding. For SQL 2005, however, there are at least 5-10 books which are truly worthwhile and this is one of them.
The reason why the quality of books has risen is the expertise of the authors. For this book, the authors are either MS SQL MVP or have been involved with the creation of MS SQL at Microsoft.
Generally speaking, the book has high level expert description of the underlying MS SQL 2005 architecture and T-SQL commands. But it lacks a nice flowing writing style which hempers the understanding to a willing reader. This book is an another example of authors who are inept at explaining the subject matter which they are an expert much like a professor who can't teach.
I also felt some parts of the book were sloppy or not as detailed. For example, the authors state that one of the steps of T-SQL query tuning is the need to correlate wait stats with problematic queries. Yet they never provide an adequate example (other than providing a useless query of SYS.DM_OS_PERFORMANCE_COUNTERS table) of how to connect wait stat with a specific transaction. This is a huge missing link.
PROS:
1)Awesome details on Indexes and Query plans
2)Solid advice on how to improve T-SQL for better performance.
Cons:
1)Not for the beginners. The book goes straight to the harder subjects (PIVOT, APPLY, complex joins etc).
2)Does not cover simple or fundamental subject matters.
Excellent.......2007-09-20
Normally I don't write a review but I liked this book enough to do so. I am a programmer not an SQL developer. I knew the basics but not the details and I had to write complex queries in SQL 2005 so I researched books for couple days before I bought this one. I have never heard of CTE, APPLY, ROW_NUMBER or PIVOT to mention few. This book at the beginning gives you the basics to understand how queries are processed internally, the difference between the types of indexes and how to read the execution plans. Then it dives into the language. Each example is well thought. The example goes over the syntax, performance and also optimization. I read all of it and did most of the examples.
Not a handy reference book.......2007-09-19
Coming from an Oracle shop over to a MSS shop I was looking for a book that would provide me with the features of T-SQL, as well as act as a handy reference. The book is likely good as a teaching resource, albeit the English usage is horrible. As a quick reference, though, it's less handy than navigating the M$ online resources.
A must for every MSS dba's desk? Nah. Not even close. I have a doctorate in MIS and this is exactly the kind of convoluted writing that makes practitioners wince when they see someone with a Ph.D.
A Timely Release & A Great Resource.......2007-09-17
This book fits perfectly between SQL Books Online and the deeper T-SQL Programing books. For me the detailed theory of operation behind how T-SQL runs queries and making note of that flow as it applies to each type of query through out the book makes it all "Click".
If this is your style too and you don't want to just copy and tweak queries THIS is the book for you.

Mostly focused on SQL statements for developers and DBA's.......2007-09-28
There is nothing in this book that you can not find in another more organized book.
Horrible!.......2007-06-06
I have yet to find a book by Microsoft Press that is well-written, and this one is the worst of them all. It was certainly a waste of my money. There are many other books on SQL 2005 that are far better.
Microsoft SQL Server(TM) 2005: Database Essentials Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) .......2007-03-08
A very good material for beginers. I would have like to found this material when I first took a DB class...
Really basic.......2007-02-24
This book is oriented towards people with absolutely no prior SQL experience. The first 3 chapters are nothing more than how to install and configure Sql 2005 server. There is a decent background on database design. Overall, its just an ok book. You can learn what this book contains just by spending a little time on the web.
RECOMMENDED.......2007-01-12
This book has been earning its keep from the get-go! Easy to find just what you need and put it into practice, without having to wade through the muck first.

Book Description
This in-depth guide helps make the creation of complex surface geometry more intuitive by leading the reader through practical examples of high curvature surface construction. It provides tips on how to deliver a manufacturable model that is modifiable for change and offers techniques for evaluating a design problem and determining the most appropriate technique(s) before modeling begins. Styling issues are outlined, such as highlight lines, lines of sight, and tangencies. This book is a valuable reference for casual or new users of Pro/SURFACE, as well as users looking to develop more effective surface modeling standards.
Customer Reviews:
Inside ProSurface ??? humm..........2003-07-10
This book is well written but not meant for beginning users of ProE. The creation of surfaces requires the designer to create datum features which more advanced surfaces can be created with. The book dose a poor job discussing the creation of datum features. But if you are a intermediate level user of ProE it will not matter. The book is great for getting some valuable concepts from... However, you will not be able to do surfacing even if you master the concepts in the book because there are no menu picks in the book. The material is presented in a clear manner but the menu picks for some of the more advanced topics are 3-4 layers deep.. "so good luck finding them"
FYI: You will still need the advice of an experienced Surfacing Designer. Just to find the menu picks....
There are few surfacing books on the market so I suggest you get what you can.. BUY THE BOOK...
WORTHLESS - except as kindling.......2002-04-19
If you expect to learn surfacing techniques in Pro-E
with help from this book - good luck! The examples are weak
at best and lack any step by step instruction. Save your money.
Inside Pro/Surface.......2000-01-13
This is the best in depth treatment of surfacing in non-PTC literature. It is not a tutorial. It is very dense. Read it slowly and work examples as if they were tutorials. I think it's better time spent for the advanced user than in the ProE surfacing class.
Definately not worth the time or price........1999-09-14
If you are already familiar with surfacing this may not be a bad book, but for someone trying to learn, the applications are very weak, and presume the user has more knowledge concerning the art of surfacing than a newcomer to this area of modeling could have.
Good Theory analysis........1999-07-14
Disappointed because it lacked tutorials. The few examples that were in the book were not too easy to follow
Book Description
Author of Writing Solid Code tells what worked and didn't work at Microsoft. This book is a practical guide to staying focused, hitting ship dates and building solid programming teams. You don't have to be a manager to appreciate this book; anyone involved in programming will appreciate the humor and practical advice it contains.
Customer Reviews:
A feel-good management book.......2005-09-12
Maguire's book is a very gentle handbook to guiding software projects. Relatively light and fast-paced, it can be read in just a few hours. His insights and tips about team management are definitely helpful, but my feeling is that he never attacks the difficult problems of management.
In a nutshell, his advice is to 1) free up the engineers' time by reducing unnecessary paperwork, 2) eliminate any unnecessary features, 3) slip ship dates to ensure quality, and 4) increasing training for under-performing engineers. He advises against 1) adding extra engineers when the project looks to be in trouble, 2) forcing engineers to work long hours to hit ship dates, 3) schedule development activities without a clear milestone plan in mind, and 4) holding on to superstar engineers who need room to grow.
These ideas are very good, of course. It's important to keep engineers from being overworked and to keep product quality as high as possible. But there is a limit to how far Maguire's tips can take you.
Schedule slips and dropped features seem like an easy thing to do when you're just talking about it, but what can you do when the command comes down from the upper echelons of management that you must ship or die trying? Maguire does get one thing right on this count, he describes teams where a third of the engineers (the best ones, of course) quit the company after the project completes.
What happens when an engineer is severely underperfoming and is holding the team back? Continue providing that person training? Maguire's teams, luckily for him, are made up of well-trained, highly focused engineers who, given the chance, can work on a product for 8 hours a day. Unfortunately, Maguire does not even approach the topic of terminating bad employees for the good of the team. A discussion of this, including how the team benefits overall from the firing, as well as how it may have unintended psychological effects on the rest of the team, would have been appreciated.
After reading this book, you'll come away with a new energy towards leading your team. You will see every problem as something easily conquered with just the right amount of finesse and encouragement. Maguire gives valuable tips to help overcome many problems that plague projects, and many of these work well. But this isn't the book to end all management books.
In a sense, it is a "Tony Robbins" guide for managers. It gets you pumped up, gives you some tools, and puts you in the right right frame of mind. I like to reread Debugging the Development Process when I need that recharge, but it is not the book I go to when I need to deal with real problems.
Good advice for software development teams.......2005-07-06
This book makes lots of good points about the software development process. Steve's ideas ring true based on my past experience with more companies than I like to think about. Although the ideas are somewhat obvious if one thinks about them, I found it amazing how many companies ignore these 'obvious' ideas. The most impressive ideas I found in this book pertain to meeting schedules without brow beating to the point where people with hard earned experience leave the organization simply because they're driven into the ground.
Quick Read That's Worth Your Time.......2004-06-14
When I read this book, the information seemed simple and obvious. However, I also realized that there were a number of things mentioned that I wasn't doing. That begs the question: Is the material that simple and obvious? Maybe not.
Maguire gives some simple, practicle advice for improving the development environment that a manager is responsible for. For example, he recommends starting each day by asking, "What can I do today that will help keep the project on track for the next few months?"
I also found the section on feedback loops to be interesting. The suggestion that you have a person stop feature work to fix a bug that they created as soon as it is found is a way to emphasize quality and make it in the best interest of developers to produce high quality code.
The chapter on attitudes is also very good. Much of the time, there isn't a lot knowledge wise that separtes good and bad developers. The difference comes in attitude. Attitudes such as, "We can't do that!", "The users won't care!", "Bugs are going to happen!" need to be rooted out.
This book gives good insight as to what you as a manager can do and help your developers do in order to have smoother projects that are high quality and on time.
Too Bad it is Out of Print.......2002-12-25
This is really a very good book. I wanted to use it as a textbook for a Software Engineering class I am teaching, but now that it is out of print I felt I couldn't.
Anyone who needs to manage programmers, or is dependent on programmers should read this book. It is also a good read for anyone looking to help improve the overall productivity of "information workers." Simple things like how and why you schedule your meetings make a big impact.
Excellent!!.......2002-02-02
This is a good book on software development process improvements. Steve talks about practical strategies for staying focused, hitting ship dates and building solid teams. These strategies are common-sense but are often ignored by managers, project manager and technical leads.
Chapter 1 talks about "laying the groundwork" -- priorities work, establish goals, coding priorites. How true this is ... how often have we started development when we are unsure of what the management wants to achieve out of it.
Some of the other strategies include having 40 hour week(hmm ... reminds me of Extreme Programming) and about the danger of having working 12 hours per day. He also spoke about ensuring personal growth in dividuals, and how it directly helps the company.
This book is written in simple english, straight to the point. To everyone doing software development, this is a must-read!!!

Solid Software, mushy in the middle.......2002-01-15
I teach software engineering at the University of Colorado. I have begun a 3 course graduate series and am using Solid Software as one of two texts in the first course, Software Engineering of Stand Alone Programs. (Subsequent courses cover multiprogramming and distributed systems.) I have found Solid Software to cover the right topics but not to the right level of detail for my purposes. It is hard to find a general book on software engineering that covers adequately enough development factors that contribute to robustness such as requirements and design reviews, static and dynamic testing, etc. I was pleased when I read through the table of contents and saw the 9 areas addressed by the book. However, it is written to, say, first level managers of programming teams, not to the programmers themselves. On many topics, there are excerpts from books or papers that give a high level "hit". The good news is that the reference list at the end of each chapter includes excellent references. I think it's fair to say that my students' (all with industry experience) reaction is that it's not quite detailed enough to really understand. They are not expecting a how-to guide but ... more than this level. But you *can* follow the reference trail to get to more substance. If you ARE a 1st level manager, wondering what more can be done, what is reasonable to ask for, then this may be a great book for you.

4.5 Great Job although a few unmentioned things.......2003-07-21
I have the PS2 version of this guide and since I've been out collecting guides lately, I decided to pick this one up. Amazingly enough (or not really) this guide is about the same as the PS2 guide. Well, the Walkthrough part for the original SOL is. The only bonus you get is the fact that this is XBOX (and if you get the PS2 MGS2: Substance, this is a better buy than that substance guide. Just remember that the controls are different).
Anyway, the biggest bonus is all those VR missions and Snake tails. Basically all the bonus stuff in MGS2: Substance. The guide is worth the grab for all that.
However, all the problems with the PS2 guide still remain. They don't go into any detail about the different difficulty levels in the guide. They tell you all the basic stuff but don't help you prepare for the next difficulty level. For example, the EXTREME difficulty level has several new additions that aren't in NROMAL mode that the guide simply won't detail, like when you must destroy more sensors at the Shell 1-2 Connecting Bridge.
The nice dog tag strategies are nice but my cheap trick to getting them still works fine. Wanna hear it? It's so simple and easy to do that I'll tell you right now! Once you get your hands on that coolant spray, get some easy dog tags by always putting a guard to sleep. Then walk to him and spray him until he wakes up. When he wakes up get behind him and have your gun pointing out BEFORE he comes to a stance. Do this and you'll shout FREEZE as soon as he's back on his feet. Pretty easy huh? Simple.
Anyway, enough about secrets as this isn't a place to submit tips for the game. Anyway, this is a good guide to get and if you buy the PS2 version of MGS2: Substance I'd recommend you get this guide rather than the PS2 guide...which overall will force you buy two guides (and all together you're paying the price of two guides! Meaning you'll have to buy the original MGS2: SOL guide and then the Substance guide for PS2 spending thirty dollars when you didn't have to).
Impressive.......2003-07-09
