Can't say anything under 'Totally Satisfied'.......2005-09-20
As soon as I received this book, I started realize the price is great compared to what the book is offering. We IE usually need to remember some things we learnt while we were studying, and instead of looking for it in many many books, you'll find it here. A friend of mine bought the Maynard's, and sincerely, Salvendy's is a lot better, better focused and clearly explained everything. Great buy!!
Perfect.......2001-12-26
In one word; perfect!
It is a must for an industrial, and system engineer
it serves and explains every useful information we need.
Thank you!
A Sturdy Reference Manual........1999-11-19
One of the best, if now the only, Reference manuals specifically written and aimed towards the practice of the wide field of industrial engineering. Within this massive 'CODEX' an IE can find information covering almost evey area in the vast field. Not meant as an introduction to the field, I however highly recomend it for the practicing members of our field.

Book Description
This long-awaited companion and update to H. James Harrington's best-selling Business Process Improvement is a hands-on implementation guide. It focuses on upgrading information distribution paths to optimize the many processes with which they come in contact. Filled with lists, charts, and appendices, this workbook tells how to document a company's processes, analyze current effectiveness, design new processes, use system enablers, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
It is what it is...and provides solid material.......2007-03-13
I agree with other reviewers who question the designation "workbook." Actually, what we have here is a book which suggests the work which each reader must complete -- individually and in collaboration with others -- with regard to the documentation, analysis, design, and management of business process improvement. It provides no head-snapping revelations, nor do its co-authors claim to offer any. Obviously, it is important to improve performance continuously by improving various processes during which tasks are completed. It is also important to measure only what matters. Finally, all organizations (regardless of size or nature) must develop leaders at all levels and within all areas who drive change initiatives to achieve these objectives. Harrington, Esseling, and van Nimwegen offer a comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective methodology. Once having identified the "what," they focus on "how."
As the authors explain, Business Process Improvement (BPI) consists of four different approaches designed to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability of administrative processes: Fast Analysis Solution Technique (FAST), process benchmarking, process redesign, and process reengineering. They recommend a six-phase process that leads to the implementation of the best-value future-state solution: Organization, Documentation, Analysis, Design, Implementation, and Management. They then focus on each approach and each phase, suggesting similarities and differences between and among them.
I would have rated this book even higher had the presentation of the material been more "reader-friendly." By the time I reached Chapter 5 on page 167, the monotonous tone of the narrative to that point made it difficult for me to sustain my concentration. I always appreciate the provision of checklists, for example, because they organize and summarize key points, and, because they facilitate (indeed expedite) review of them later. To repeat, the material is solid. The authors obviously know what they are talking about. Their observations are based on real-world situations. Their suggestions are sensible. That said, this reader (at least) had to work much too hard to locate, absorb, and then digest the authors' core concepts.
No doubt other readers will find the material more accessible. My guess (only a guess) is that many of those who do will be C-level executives in larger organizations who already know much more about BPI than I do. I wish them and their associates well, hoping they can effectively apply -- and then have their organization benefit substantially from -- what Harrington, Esseling, and van Nimwegen offer.
A Very Useful Process Improvement Reference.......2006-09-19
I agree with the other reviewers, as I first purchased this book assuming that it was a "workbook" with working examples. It wasn't this type of workbook, but is a very valuable resource for the process-improvement minded. It could have utilized more illustrations - I suggest creating your own diagrams as you read through this book. This is the approach I took whilst reading the book and was very satisfied with the results.
Documentation, a very important subject that is often overlooked and/or underutilized, is explained very well in this book, describing the level of detail required to support a successful process improvement initiative. The Appendix XI - guidelines for designing forms and documents is fantastic and I recommend it for anyone considering facilitating process improvement workshops.
The organization chapter on organizing a process improvement team is very good - managers and especially companies wanting to accelerate their process improvement successes could benefit from this instruction.
The Defining Improvement Opportunities chapter was also very informative, linking the need for standardization with IT, administration and operations.
And lastly, don't discount one of the authors - H James Harrington. He is one of the best business writers in the business for topics ranging from process improvement, project management, customer service or even human resources. Don't miss a chance to read anything he has written.
I would disagree that this book is dry - it is well written and researched and if it had contained a few more illustrations, I would have given this book a 5-star rating.
Process Improvement Classic Reference.......2006-05-31
This book serves as a powerful reference on process improvement.
The author, H.J. Harrington, is wise. We can learn a lot from him. He's got great experience from the firm, Ernst and Young.
The book provides a deep, well-structured and methodical glimpse into the practice of process improvement.
Although there are many books on the subject (older and newer) this book is foundational. It blends TQM and Industrial engineering concepts. At some degree it is a "deep dive" into the Six Sigma method's Business Process Architecture (BPA) tool.
This book is a great reference for consultants, line managers, business process managers/owners and business analysts as well as anyone wanting a thorough understanding of Process Improvement.
Reading it and applying the practices described within may save companies money. It can build career enhancing compentencies in those that adopt/practice what they have learned.
For the relatively low price you can have access to the mind of a sage.
Buisness process improvment work book.......2006-03-08
Provide an excellent overview of BPM and provide good examples.
Not bad, could be better.......2002-07-19
I'll agree with users who feel this book is dry, dry, dry. I also have some issues with the design of the book. There were concepts that I found confusing until I drew my own flow charts -such aids could certainly have been included in the book. There were too many bulleted lists that probably should have been numbered for easier reference and ranking. Where this book shines is on the mechanics on BPI; how to organize the project and the teams (although a good project manager should know how to do this), the sequence of steps to go through, and how to organize all the collected information.
What is missing from this book, in my opinion, is discussion on Risk Management and Change Management. You can document processes and manuals and forms until you're blue in the face, but in the end, you'll have to get human beings to buy into the difficult task of changing processes to reach the future state, and there is little discussion of this.

SPC: Practical Understanding of Capability by Implementing Statistical Process Control, third edition (Walkabout)
ASIN: 0750665297
Release Date: 2005-06-10 |
Book Description
Mastering Statistical Process Control shows how to understand business or process performance more clearly and more effectively. This practical book is based on a rich and varied selection of case studies from across industry and commerce, including material from the manufacturing, extractive and service sectors. It will enable readers to understand how SPC can be used to maximum effect, and will deliver more effective monitoring, control and improvement in systems, processes and management.
The common obstacle to successful use of SPC is getting bogged down with control charts, forgetting that visual representation of data is but a tool and not an end in itself. Mastering SPC demonstrates how statistical tools are applied and used in reality. This is a book that will open up the power of SPC for many: managers, quality professionals, engineers and analysts, as well as students, will welcome the clarity and explanation that it brings to understanding the use and benefit of SPC in a wide range of engineering, production and service situations.
Key case studies include using SPC to:
· Measure quality and human factors
· Monitor process performance accurately over long periods
· Develop best-practice benchmarks using control charts
· Maximise profitability of fixed assets
· Improve customer service and satisfaction
* Shows how your business, process and profitability can benefit from process management and control
* SPC is widely used and widely misunderstood. This is the only book to take an applications based approach to SPC
* Ideal for managers, process engineers and quality personnel in both manufacturing and service sectors, as well as students of management, statistics, operations research, MBAs and Six Sigma candidates
Download Description
Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a widely used method of measuring and monitoring processes in almost all industrial, business and service settings. Written by a leading expert and based on the experience of blue chip organisations such as Shell, Chevron, Nokia, British Gas, The World Bank and the European Commission, this is the only book that goes beyond the theory of SPC to show how to understand business or process performance more clearly and more effectively in practice. No other SPC text delivers such a practical and applied approach. It enables readers to understand how SPC can be used to maximum effect. Managers, quality professionals, engineers, analysts and students of business and systems engineering at undergraduate and MBA level will find it an invaluable reference.

Healthy House Building for the New Millennium
ASIN: 0963715658 |
Book Description
At last...a book that takes all the mystery out of ventilation! Understanding Ventilation is the only book that covers all aspects of exchanging the air in houses: infiltration, equipment selection, design, heat-recovery ventilators, sizing, costs, controls, whole-house filters, distribution, and possible problems that a ventilation system can cause--all in easy-to-understand language.
Customer Reviews:
A breath of fresh air.......2003-09-07
I read this book and found the answer I was looking for. My 1957 home had been upgraded and insulated so well that it was acting as a bottle. Basically my indoor humidity was up at past 65% RH and my poorly insulated exterior walls were getting down to the low 50F in the colder months of the SF Bay area. No one could explain why I was getting mold in my closets. I found this book at an architectural book store and everything clicked. I may be the first person to install a ventilation system on my type of home but I had the confidence to do so after reading this book. Now I have a well ventilated home and no more mold. Thanks you!!!
A Holistic Approach to VENTILATION.......2001-02-14
I recently went "house-hunting" with some relatives and quickly realized that they were focused exclusively on floor plan issues like the number of bedrooms, the square footage, and the presence of trees on the lot. It disturbed me that they were neglecting any consideration of the critical role that ventilation plays in creating a healthy home environment. Like so many other homebuyers, they were adhering to a philosophy of "ventilation by default." Then and there, I decided to give them a copy of John Bower's extraordinary book UNDERSTANDING VENTILATION, as an early house-warming gift.
Bower understands how houses breathe and he communicates his expertise succinctly and authoritatively. He take a holistic approach to a house, viewing it as an organism consisting of interconected parts. He equates the ventilation system with the lungs of the structure. Houses built without a stratgically designed ventilation system are like sleep apnea patients, who breathe erratically and unevenly. Bower's approach teaches us how to build systems that have controlled, efficient, intentional ventilation.
In the theatre, the term "triple threat" describes someone who can sing, dance and act. In the area of building science, John Bower is a quadruple threat. He is a building ecology expert of very high calibre; he is a skilled writer; he is a talented teacher; and he is a compassionate 'sick house doctor' who can diagnose and prescribe strategies that heal.
Bower's style is masterful, clear, concise and very readable. The diagrams are illustrative and demonstrate the author's welcome sense of humor. The information is easily accessible for those who would prefer to use the book as a quick reference. The numerous appendices (abbreviations, glossary, bibliography, organizations, equipment sources) alone, make the price of the book a bargain.
If you are a homeowner (or a prospective one) and if concepts like infiltration, air exchange, positive / negative air pressure, source control and ventilation make you roll your eyes in the back of your head, then this is a 'must have' book for you.
"Understanding Ventilation" Not Installing Ductwork.......2000-03-30
Proper housing ventilation, the kind that helps maintain healthyindoor air quality (IAQ)is a poorly understood subject. John Bower's book is an excellent "teacher" for the layperson as well as a "continuing educational seminar" for the industry insider. It breaks down the concept of proper ventilation in an easy-to-read format while it presents a new paradign for industry workers familiar with installing ductwork but who may not have time to keep current with trade magazines. This book illuminates aspects of proper ventilation that are often overlooked such as how pollutants get into your house in the first place and provides workable guidlines to achieve solutions. It would be ridiculous to assume that any book would have the concrete answers to every possible IAQ problem, but where this book succeeds is in its ability to involove the reader in the solution to his or her own home's individual IAQ problems. END
Not a duct design or sizing manual.......1999-06-16
Over-hyped. If your goal is to come away with the ability to design and install actual ventilation systems, i.e. ductwork, try again. Little accurately re-design or modify my existing ductwork. I actually spoke with the publisher before purchasing this book, and was assured this topic was covered!
If you know of a book which addresses duct sizing and layout for the layperson, please email me!

Customer Reviews:
Not yet received.......2007-01-23
I have not received this book [Handbook for Productivity Measurement and Improvement].
Fantastic source of information for productivity management.......1997-08-22
This book contains about 100 texts written by different people, with different profiles and recognized knowledge, experience and contributions in productivity management, like Peter Drucker, J. M. Juran, Jay Forrester, A. V. Feigenbaum, etc. The editors were able to put together a lot of information in a coherent way, that is easy and pleasant to consult and read.
The topics covered include the importance of productivity measurement and management, basic concepts, specific methods for different sectors (manufacturing, service, staff, profit centers, government, nonprofit), feedback and information system, sustainability and employee involvement.
Handbooks are often boring and unpleasant to read. This is an exception, with short texts and good graphic presentation. Of course this means that most information has an introductory charater, but many references are given to direct the reader to deeper studies.
I have used this handbook for some time before I decided to write this, and my objective is to share with others the satisfaction I have obtained from this excellent reference
An excellent productivity guide.......1997-07-24
There are no words to describe this book!!!. It covers every aspect regarding productivity improvement. It has lots of articles written by various professionals, and it explains in a simple way how to improve productivity, whatever it is services, production, etc.
A must have for engineers!!!

An Exhaustive Guide For Managing Change.......2000-07-17
David Hutton has created an outstanding resource for those responsible for managing change within their organizations. This book is not just for Change Agents . . . I recommend it for all leaders in any organization. The subtitle, "A Survival Guide For Quality Improvement Champions" is on the money. This book covers it all!
Best book on process improvement I've ever read.......1999-06-02
In my opinion, this is the best book on process improvement on the market today. It takes up where so many other books fear to tread and deals with practical issues of organizational dynamics. An excellent companion volume to the CMM, SPICE, or other technical framework.
Essential guide for companies seeking excellent performance.......1998-08-22
Virtually every company or organization can benefit by engaging in a quest for excellence. David Hutton's book paves the way by explaining the opportunities and pitfalls which will be encountered. Success does not just happen. It must be planned, then plans must be executed, results measured and there must be followup. The Change Agent's Handbook covers it all. David explains the vital role of management and realizes how important it is for them to be continualy engaged. If you plan to make significant strides toward excellence read this book then keep it handy as a reference document. I have worked extensively with David and have watched him place into practice that which he preaches.
So topical and interesting I couldn't put it down........1998-08-22
I came across this book at a time when I was dealing with major changes in my organization. Since I was Vice President level, I had to sell my colleagues on many of the things I thought necessary for our survival all of which meant a change in process and thinking. I was a change agent. This book championed me through the steps required to meet the task. We did very well as we brought about a change in culture and in the way we would "do business".

brief, good coverage of graphing and statistics.......2007-06-30
Swanson gives practical guidelines to anyone interested in running a quality improvement program. Many checklists are supplied. Often accompanied by top-down flowcharts. Jargon is explained.
And for those people without a strong maths background, there is an entire chapter on how to analyse and display data. It describes the most basic display graph types, like bar, pie, histogram, scatterplot and control charts. Along with the specialised but important Gantt chart for coordinating a project.
There is also a short discussion of statistical techniques. But if you find this useful, I would encourage you to then consult a fully fledged book dedicated to statistics. Swanson's coverage is necessarily miminal.
Practical and Useful.......2001-08-24
This textbook was required reading for a Masters Program. Consequently, I didn't purchase because I wanted to, I purchased because I had too. With that in mind, I found this to be probably the most useful textbook I purchased during my entire course of study. The writing was clear and easy to understand and the practical applications were limitless. I highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to "run" a quality improvement program effectively and efficiently.
