Book Description

ESSENTIALS OF STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, FOURTH EDITION is an introductory stats textbook that emphasizes statistical concepts and applications. The discussion and development of each technique is presented in an application setting, with the statistical results providing insights to decisions and solutions to problems. The easy-to-follow presentation style and problem-scenario approach clearly show how to apply statistical methods in practical business situations. This brief introduction to business statistics balances a conceptual understanding of statistics with the real-world application of statistical methodology. The essentials version features selected core topics from the authors' market-leading STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, NINTH EDITION presented in 13 chapters. It includes the highly-regarded strengths of the longer text, including the problem-scenario approach that uses real-world examples to introduce stat techniques. Methods, Applications, and Self-Test exercises include hundreds of problems based on real data. Examples and exercises throughout focus on ways that stats contribute to improving the quality of products and services. This text can also be computer integrated at the discretion of the instructor. Instruction for data analysis based on Microsoft Excel and MINITAB is included in appendices of appropriate chapters. Case problems are also provided with the text, with data sets available on disk for both MINITAB 14 and Excel formats.

5 out of 5 stars A useful book.......2007-01-04

This is a very useful book for my study. I use it to learn a lot of knowledge. you may try it.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly excellent book on basic statistics........2006-10-09

I've taken various probability/statistics classes as an undergrad at VA Tech, and as a grad student at GMU and MIT. This book is without question the best I have seen - by a long shot. Further, it provides the only thorough and rigorous explanation for hypothesis testing I have ever seen.

The theory and end of chapter exercises are as straightforward, clear and concise as you will get. The only manner by which this book could be improved would be by the inclusion of a rigorous proof as to why considerations regarding the degrees of freedom (dof) require that some equations have /n as a denominator while others have /(n-1).

2 out of 5 stars Confusing, disjointed and too expensive in my opinion........2006-08-09

I teach Statistics for a living, and this book replaced the book by Weiers, a move that I have berated the folks that do our purchasing ever since. The other Stats lecturer felt the same, and we have ended up using old copies of the prior book.
For example, the book gives a miserly single page to explain Quartiles, and has very little in the way of examples that are helpful.
If you HAVE to have it because your school dictates, you have to have it, but if you want to buy a book for the purpose of teaching yourself Stats, look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars You're spinnin' me..........2006-02-01

Statistics is supposedly easy right...right! But who knew that a textbook would go to such lengths to make it harder!

The definitions of all the terms we have to deal with in statistics are written so poorly and write themselves in circles. Now, my reading comprehension is pretty high, but getting through these chapters is torture!

A word of advise, if you're taking a class using this book, DO NOT RELY ON IT! Take good notes in class and use this book only as a reference and for assigned work.

ugh.

      Book Description

This important book provides information necessary for those dealing with stochastic calculus and pricing in the models of financial markets operating under uncertainty; introduces the reader to the main concepts, notions and results of stochastic financial mathematics; and develops applications of these results to various kinds of calculations required in financial engineering. It also answers the requests of teachers of financial mathematics and engineering by making a bias towards probabilistic and statistical ideas and the methods of stochastic calculus in the analysis of market risks.

5 out of 5 stars Shiryaev knows his stuff!.......2006-09-13

This book is typical of Shiryaev, who is a representative of the Russian school of probability theory. Not only the book explains the technical details clearly, but also it explains the "bigger picture" as to why this particular mathematical set-up makes sense and it is a good approximation of reality. The book reflects the (admirable) Russian style of teaching: explain the origins of theory, which are usually some specific problem; then carefully develop a mathematical theory tailor-made for the given problem; finally, disclose the essence of the problem and produce a beautiful result.

Before reading this book, I have been quite familiar with stochastic calculus and semi-martingale theory. What interests me most (sometimes puzzles me most) is the way how theory is applied to financial math problems, esp. the justification of certain "conventions" (e.g. we always start with discounted process, play with martingale measures, and do certain standard "rituals" in pricing and hedging). Sometimes people abuse those conventions when the theory's set-up is not quite appropriate. Shiryaev's book shows the justification and limitation of theory, by clearly explaining the origins and specific contexts of theory. This is especially helpful to getting a true understanding of the subject. I would say after reading his book, my mind has achieved a harmony.

I read Shiryaev's book on probability (GTM 95) many years ago. It was a pleasant experience. Now I'm happy to have this kind of experience again. From lines of the book, you can see the author's passion and deep understanding of financial math.
I only regret I didn't read this book much earlier.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Monograph.......2005-07-21

This monograph starts from the very basics and develops as it progresses. Its historical notes found all over the book makes it unique and entertaining. As a mathematician aspiring to break through the STREET, I found it very accessible and comprehensive. If you have Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus at Shever/Kaaze's (how ever you spell their name) level, you will skim through this book with in weeks. But if you don't, don't panic, you will still be fine with some introductory level measure theoretic probability course.

You will enjoy it as I did.

      5 out of 5 stars Bravo.......2001-11-14

The Essentials of Stochastic Finance: Facts, Models, Theory by Albert N. Shiriaev, et al offers a clear treatment of both theoretical and emperical Finance. Shiryaev presents not only the essentials of probability as it is applied to finance, but he also covers recent develpoments in Mathematical Finance. It is very well written and it can be covered in one year (depending on the audience). Each topic moves from the specific to the general, beginning with one or more examples to lead into the theoretical results. This is the most comprehensive book out there. It covers Mathematical Finance, Martingale, Markov Thoery... to Econometric ARCH GARCH FGARCH ...to theory of Finance CAPM APT... PART II of the book requires a good knowledge of Stochastic Calculus at Karatzas and Shreve level...

4 out of 5 stars I thought it was pretty good actually.......2001-10-20

I also had this book for two math classes and found it to be pretty good, probably one of the better text books I've had. It explained things better than my teachers did! In all fairness, I knew all the math before the calculus part so I only really read the book in an in-depth manner the last 3 or 4 chapters. Anyway, just a different opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Is this book talking about math? Did I miss something?.......2001-06-21

I am a college student and had the unfortunete experience to have to use this utterly useless textbook for two different courses--a finite math and a calculus course. The text is very technical and wordy, with terrible examples not explaining steps but rather using the authors 'ego-boosting' terms such as 'obvioulsy', 'of course' and 'simply' -- wrongly assuming that drawn out text taught the student something. Do not buy this book if you are looking to learn calc--there has got to be something better.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Text!!.......2003-01-19

The information in this book is clear-cut, concise, and easy to read. Easily understandable examples are given for the various statistical formulas, and extras like z-score value charts and the like help a lot. If you have a talented instructor leading your Stats class (like I did) in addition to this text, you will be sure to ace this course (like I did)!

P.S.: If you happen to be an Information Systems/Information Technology major (such as myself) DO NOT RE-SELL THIS BOOK! You will need the information in this book in your future Info Systems courses, and you will definitely realize the TRUE value of this text!

        4 out of 5 stars A useful book. . ........2002-02-27

. . .by authors who remember that they are writing for persons who are NOT professional mathematicians.

In today's world, frequently persons enter the business profession from a background in something other than what in the past might have been considered traditional avenues. Not all business textbooks recognize this (see my review for "Mathematical Applications")! However, this book seems to be an exception.

The material is presented in a logical format; key formulae are highlighted and set off from the rest of the text; and in-depth business examples are given in each chapter, demonstrating the particular statistical tools to be taught.

        A useful and recommended volume.

        Book Description

Essential Mathematics for Economics and Business has become established as one of the leading introductory books on mathematics. It combines a non-rigorous approach to mathematics with applications in economics and business. The fundamental mathematical concepts are explained as simply and as briefly as possible, using a wide selection of worked examples, graphs and real-world applications.

" Excellent for those coming to maths after school/university....it is absolutely excellent as a text to get you up to speed very quickly. The explanations are clear and very well thought out without sacrificing important concepts. I couldn't recommend it highly enough as a text book to give you a leg up into more involved mathematical economics."

"the most comprehensive reader in this topic yet, this book is an essential aid to the avid economist who loathes mathematics!"

5 out of 5 stars Good book for Professors and Students.......2007-01-04

I am a teacher of Introductory Mathematics for Economics. Traditionally, it is not very easy to find good introductory books of Mathematical Economics.

I consider this book to be one of the best. It covers the most important mathematical concepts and techniques such as functions, differentiation, partial differentiation, integration, differential equations, financial mathematics. In all the chapters the reader will find several progress exercises adequate to an introductory level.

The authors clearly show a great deal of concern with the economic applications. This is one of the best aspects of this book: for every mathematical technique explained, the authors present several economic applications.

If you are an undergraduate student of Economics or Business you will find this book extremely useful. If you are a Professor you will discover several interesting examples of mathematical applications to Economic analysis.
