Classify this itsy-bitsy book as a project management guide that isn't a project to read but that distills all the basics for you into a quick thumbnail guide on everything from establishing objectives and keeping to schedules and budgets to providing effective leadership and tackling problems efficiently. Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.
It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description
Striving to answer that question more than 60 years ago sparked the development of the most powerful training methodology that has impacted U.S. industry -- Training Within Industry (TWI). During World War II, major production increases were demanded by the U.S. military - TWI, which trains supervisors, was developed comprising three separate programs:
Job Instruction -- how to instruct employees so they can quickly remember to do a job, correctly, safely, and conscientiously. Job Methods -- how to improve methods for producing greater quantities of quality products in less time by effectively using available workforce, machines, and materials. Job relations -- how to lead employees so that problems are prevented and analytical methods are used to effectively resolve problems. Toyota was the earliest company to adopt TWI after World War II, and this methodology planted the seeds for the development of the Toyota Production System -- the gold standard of manufacturing excellence.
In The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors, Patrick Graupp and Robert Wrona teach supervisors how to apply a four-step method for each of the three respective programs with numerous examples and exercises. In these exercises, supervisors will participate in hands-on application of the four-step method to actual jobs and employee problems from their own worksites. In addition, a CD companion includes blank forms needed to complete the exercises and implementation case studies.
The TWI Workbook will teach readers:
A method, which works every time, for teaching people to quickly learn to do jobs correctly, safely and conscientiously. How to break down jobs for instruction so that learners get just the right amount and the right kind of information to master jobs fully in a short amount of time. A method of analyzing jobs for the purpose of improving them which focuses on making the best use of resources currently available. How to discover, develop, and implement improvement ideas through a series of questions and a new-method development and application process. A method for handling "people problems" which ensures that supervisors take decisive and proper actions that achieve their objectives. How to develop sound relations with people that create good performance and prevent problems from arising in the first place.

It emphasizes the importance of adhering to the detailed training regimen established over 50 years ago. I stongly recommend it to anyone interested in the details.

Book Description
For system administrators, ensuring that all Windows servers are performing optimally is a tall order. The larger the enterprise, the greater the chance for irritating, time-consuming configuration problems. Sometimes, you can determine the root cause of the problem yourself-but that's only if you're lucky.
With Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), the diagnosis is done for you. MOM monitors server operations and automatically notifies you of problems by sending an immediate alert to your console, email address, or pager. To help you better understand how MOM works, O'Reilly presents Essential Microsoft Operations Manager.
The goal of this comprehensive tutorial is to give first-time MOM administrators a solid foundation for planning, implementing, and administering MOM 2005. Author Chris Fox, a renowned MOM expert, offers the type of practical, real-world advice that you need to improve the performance of your IT infrastructure.
After taking you through the entire process of setting up MOM on the network, the book moves on to more advanced administration issues. It carefully instructs you how to program and automate MOM and the agents that reside on the servers themselves. You'll also learn how to manage the scripts that determine which server agents are relevant to report.
By capturing system data, intelligently analyzing it, and then notifying you with a suggested course of action, MOM makes extinguishing fires a breeze. And now, thanks to Essential Microsoft Operations Manager, learning how to use MOM is a breeze, too.
Customer Reviews:
Every MOM 2005 admin needs to read this first.......2007-09-16
This is a great book to get up and running with MOM 2005. After reading this, I suggest reading Microsoft(R) Operations Manager 2005 Unleashed (MOM): With A Preview of Operations Manager 2007 (Unleashed) to really solidify these concepts and fill in the gaps.
Essential Microsoft Operations Manager.......2007-07-30
Well written, supply the technical information needed. Little long prolog but in the end well written and easy readable.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-10-28
Are you a first-time MOM administrator? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Chris Fox, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gives you what you must know in order to have a solid foundation for planning, implementing, and administering MOM 2005.
Fox, begins by bringing you up to speed on the basic concepts of operations management and how to get MOM 2005 up and running in your environment. Then, the author takes you through the components and tasks that you'll be working with most often as an administrator. Finally, he discusses the specific issues you'll encounter when using MOM in a larger environment, with a variety of platforms.
This most excellent book will help you get your job done. More importantly, this book helps you deploy MOM 2005 in large enterprises with heterogeneous platforms.
Give the essentials book a break.......2006-07-10
I just don't understand how can anyone rate an "essentials" book not good enough for not having enough details or "beef" in it. I have to give it 5 stars to make it fair. This book is great if you are absolutely new to MOM, it will get you there to install it and customize it at a basic level. I believe that the author gives you enough detail to let you drive on your own after this test drive. It really made my implementation easier, I gave the book to a coworker and he had about my same views. Just remember, if you are not new to MOM look somewhere else.
Where's the beef?.......2006-06-25
I had now purchased both of the available MOM books, both seem to cover roughly the same material, but neither really has any meat to it! I would have given this 3 stars, but unfortunately, the author makes a boring topic even more boring.

ESSENTIALS OF CAPACITY MANAGEMENT
Full of valuable tips, techniques, illustrative real-world examples, exhibits, and best practices, this handy and concise paperback will help you stay up to date on the newest thinking, strategies, developments, and technologies in capacity management.
"Proper capacity management is the driving force behind outstanding corporate performance.
Essentials of Capacity Management clearly describes its impact on operations, as well as how to use measurement systems and process analysis to enhance capacity usage. This is a solid foundation in capacity management for the business professional!"
—Steve Bragg, Author
"Although capacity management is a fundamental concern, it-like many other fundamentals-is often scanted. In fact, there's little that's more important to most companies than their ability to manage their capacity, which is simply the ability to do work.
Essentials of Capacity Management does a great job of giving a quick, yet thorough, overview of the many considerations involved."
—Barry J. Brinker, Editor, Guide to Cost Management (John Wiley & Sons)
"This book does an excellent job of relating processes to capacity. Managers and executives will better understand that managing the effectiveness and efficiency of processes reduces the amount of capacity required, thus providing an opportunity to reduce costs while improving process quality and reducing process time. It shows the relationship of capacity to demand on downstream processes. It shows that process flexibility reduces required capacity."
—John Antos, President, Value Creation Group, Inc.
The Wiley Essentials Series-because the business world is always changing...and so should you.

Customer Reviews:
Just an introduction to the supply chain concept.......2007-10-13
This book repeats many time same items and is too focused on distribution business e.g. Walmart, Paper utilities... and does not address the industrial worls such as in aeronautic, defense...
The information convied in this book is very general. for my point of view, it is unsufficient to start setting up a supply chain.
Good Overview.......2007-09-28
This book provides a good overview of the basic principles of supply Chain Managment. After reading the book, I was able to directly apply the principles to solve several problems in supply chains I am dealing with in my supplier development job.
The principles are logically presented and backed up with examples that illustrate their application. I would recommend this book especially for people in Manufacturing or engineering who are trying to understand how to improve performance across a supply chain or how to make their supply chain management process more efficient and effective.
Buen libro para principiantes.......2007-06-06
Se entienden rapidamente los conceptos principales, un buen libro de comienzo en el tema.
Good "Executive Summary".......2006-11-03
One of the best primers I have read so far on SCM. While not a blue-print on how to implment SCM, it really does provide an excellent overview of the benefits of SCM and the steps a company would take to introduce SCM. One of the best sections of the book introduces new trends within SCM. This section alone made the book a good investment. Recommend it for top management looking to get a good, but basic understanding of SCM
Just as advertised.......2006-03-12
This book is a good overview and primer for anyone who is interested in learning what "Supply Chain Management" entails. It starts with a very basic definition and goes into specifics as the chapters progress.
