Excellent Information Planning Experiments.......2001-06-14
This book is for someone that has identified problems, and wants to use sound experiments to solve those problems. The book provides some good guidelines, and some good forms for preparing experiments (some of which I use). They emphasize graphical/visual approaches, and avoid statistics, which I missed somewhat. When I travel to different plants to solve problems, I use this book as a reference.
review of design of experiments.......1999-12-26
this book makes statistics understandable! i love the graphics!

Understandable Design of Experiments and Quality Application.......1999-01-20
Robert Brewer has written a book that allows you to understand statistical process control techniques without being a mathematician. He uses graphs were ever possible to point out how to tell if a process is working as it should. He also explains ideas like process capability, process improvment and analysis of variance of properties in a straighforward, readable and understandable fashion.

Book Description
The Tools You Need To Be A Successful Engineer As you read through this new text, you'll discover the importance of Statistical Quality Control (SQC) tools in engineering process monitoring and improvement. You'll learn what SQC methods can and cannot do, and why these are valuable additions to your engineering tool kit. And instead of overwhelming you with unnecessary details, the authors make the implementation of statistical tools "user-friendly." The rich set of examples and problems integrated throughout this book will help you gain a better understanding of where and how to apply SQC tools. Real projects, cases and data sets show you clearly how SQC tools are used in practice. Topics are covered in the right amount of detail to give you insight into their relative importance in modern quality assurance and the ability to immediately use them. This approach provides the mix of tools you'll need to succeed in your engineering career. Key Features of the Text
* Provides a coherent presentation of the role of statistics in quality assurance.
* Places special attention on making sure that while the technical details are absolutely correct, they do not overwhelm the reader.
* Presents the material in realistic contexts, with examples and problems that are based on real-world projects, cases and data sets.
* The implementation of statistical tools is user-friendly.
* The statistical treatment emphasizes graphics and estimation (and de-emphasizes hypothesis testing).
Customer Reviews:
great book on quality control from a statisticians viewpoint.......2000-12-13
In my work with engineers at Biosense Webster I am often confronted with issues related to the design and/or analysis of an R&R Gauge study, the construction of tolerance intervals or the estimate of a process capability parameter. I often refer to or refer them to Vardeman's book to handle these problems. Many engineers are taught to do gauge R&R studies but they just know how to turn the crank. They don't have an understanding of the analysis of variance that gives meaning to the analysis and motivates the design. Too often sample estimates are treated as though they are the actual parameters. Vardeman and Jobe write for the engineers but with a statistician's perspective and understanding. They cover control charts, process capability, experimental design, inspection sampling and TQM. They provide simple formulas and tables to give the engineer the tools he needs to handle most common quality control problems. More importantly though, they also provide excellent development and discussion so that there can be depth of understanding of the key concepts. This book is not only good for engineers but also is a good reference book for statisticians. It can easily be used for a first course in quality control. Another good book along these lines is Ryan's "Statistical Methods for Quality Improvement". Certainly, Juran's "Quality Handbook" is a great reference also.

A valuable reference book for any professional responsible for quality control management in a manufacturing or service business.
Customer Reviews:
A sound introductory text.......1999-08-12
This book could serve as the text for an introductory course in Quality Management and Control at the junior or senior level. If an engineering or business undergraduate can afford only one course in Quality, then this would be a suitable text for that course. The level of mathematics can be well managed by students not particularly good at analytical skills.
Book Description
This book introduces fundamental quality concepts of statistical process control and the application of these concepts to issues arising in industry. This book covers all aspects of quality from the basicsidentifying quality, the evolution of quality, quality advocatesto advanced topics such as reliability, quality costs, and product liability. For professionals interested in a book on quality that emphasizes the understanding, use, and interpretation of statistical process control principles, concepts, and results throughout the problem-solving process.
Customer Reviews:
Innovative and appropriate in today's world.......2006-04-07
The author makes an excellent connection between quality and ethics. Although the topic of moral may make the super left-brainers uneasy, it is an important issue. The book also points out fragmentation of today's organizations, its negative consequence on quality, and suggested solutions.
Detailed, yet not well organized.......2006-01-24
This book is not written very well (its 47.2 oz weight is a testamount to that: 47.2 oz on one topic?) Book has plenty of rounding errors and is not organized very well. Some topics are not explained well, and at 47.2 oz, a lot of weight is moved in pages to figure things out. I don't recomend this book. Find a shorter one.
Where is the real world?.......2005-12-13
Not the quality I would expect in a textbook titled "Quality".
It is obvious that many of the problems are pulled out of the air and not put together by subject matter experts, e.g. one on bicycles on campus, locking them up, and security. If you ride a high-end bike you will get a good laugh out of this example. This may be OK for the naive 20 year old but not the have lived around the world, work at 15 different jobs 60 year old grad student.
Formulas are put out as "Ok folks, here's the formula, use it." with no proof (this would be a good place for the appendices), just doesn't cut it when you have a degree in mathematics and have had to prove all formulas.
Many missed references to the wrong table in the appendices.
Lots of tables & charts are repeated doing nothing but making the book larger. Another great place for appendicies.
Glad I had the internet to really know what the issue in quality are.
