A Reasonable Quick Survey.......2007-10-22
DOE Simplified is perhaps overly simplified. The author tries to pack ANOVA, factorial experimentation, use of blocking and fold overs, and response-surface methodology inside 200 pages. The attempt is admirable, but the book would be hard for a beginner to fully understand due to information gaps, especially on why the techniques work (at least on an intuitive level). The person who would benefit most is that person needing a refresher after a being away from DOE for some time.
A Truly Brief Introduction to DOE.......2006-11-10
The book is a very brief introduction to DOE. I had read other reviews that stated that it was only a very brief intro to DOE. My thoughts when purchasing the book was that would be what I needed since I had not previously worked with statistical experimental design. Having now gone more than half way through the book, I found that I could not follow the solutions without the aid of other more detailed statistical design of experiments texts. If you are truly a beginner, I suggest using this book while referring to Design & Analysis of Experiments by Douglas Montgomery. In this manner while using a book similar to Montgoemery's 5th or later edition as a reference, the "DOE Simplified" text serves as a pacer book to hurry you through an intro to DOE. It certainly helped me become much more interested in pursuing DOE and thus order a number of additional books of which Montgomery's was one of seven that I have recently purchased from Amazon. Although I am digressing, my rating of Montgoemry's 5th Edition is FANTASTIC!!!!! DOE Simplified.... good summary as long as you have reference material.
Basic book on DOE-lack theory.......2006-03-13
Simplified is the key. This book offers a very basic approach to DOE. It's good for someone who wants a quick start in DOE.
Very straightforward.......2005-11-20
Great book. Steps through basic stats in anticipation of use for DOEs. Good examples and well-written. Easy to recommend.
Using of DOE.......2005-08-16
Using of DOE is useful for metallurgical engineering.I use doe for design of alloys (based on requirments and metallurgical parameters)and control of metallurgical parameters for improvment of mechanical properties.I suggest this book for all engineers especially for metallurgical engineers (for control and improvment of heat tratment, casting, electropalting, and other process).
I use DOE in my PHD project for design of a new steel alloy.

An Introduction to Design of Experiments: A Simplified Approach
ASIN: 0471361011 |
Book Description
Fulfill the practical potential of DOE-with a powerful, 16-step approach for applying the Taguchi method
Over the past decade, Design of Experiments (DOE) has undergone great advances through the work of the Japanese management guru Genechi Taguchi. Yet, until now, books on the Taguchi method have been steeped in theory and complicated statistical analysis. Now this trailblazing work translates the Taguchi method into an easy-to-implement 16-step system.
Based on Ranjit Roy's successful Taguchi training course, this extensively illustrated book/CD-ROM package gives readers the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and apply the Taguchi method to engineering projects-from theory and applications to hands-on analysis of the data. It is suitable for managers and technicians without a college-level engineering or statistical background, and its self-study pace-with exercises included in each chapter-helps readers start using Taguchi DOE tools on the job quickly. Special features include:
- An accompanying CD-ROM of Qualitek-4 software, which performs calculations and features all example experiments described in the book
- Problem-solving exercises relevant to actual engineering situations, with solutions included at the end of the text
- Coverage of two-, three-, and four-level factors, analysis of variance, robust designs, combination designs, and more
Engineers and technical personnel working in process and product design-as well as other professionals interested in the Taguchi method-will find this book/CD-ROM a tremendously important and useful asset for making the most of DOE in their work.

Blatant Commercialism.......2007-05-07
I found this book to be noting but a thinly disquised sales pitch for software, training and consulting services. A real rip off.
Great book for practical applications.......2002-03-29
I bought this book hoping to learn DOE using Taguchi Methods and apply what I learned to real life problems in my work. It was very helpful. Not only did it help me learn the methods I needed to perform my testing at work but I did it in only 8 days of reading. The book was very easy to read and the examples helped me understand everything I needed to know to apply this method to real situations. A great buy for anyone looking to learn Taguchi Methods.
An Introduction to More Effective Experimentation.......2002-02-20
The challenge that all research directors and senior scientists face is that virtually all scientists are originally trained to believe that the only proper way to conduct an experiment is to vary only one factor at a time while holding all other variables fixed. This belief, which can be shown mathematically to be totally incorrect, has been a drag on the scientific community for decades, causing experimental science to be much less productive than it should be. In fact, by properly designing experiments in which several factors are varied in a carefully thought out, predetermined pattern, much more information can be obtained with far fewer experiments.
What Dr. Roy has achieved in his book on experimental design is to clearly explain why this is so and to provide the tools which allows his readers to overcome their ingrained beliefs and adopt a more effective method of designing their own experimental programs.
Of particular interest is his discussion of experimental design using orthogonal arrays (Chapter 4) for it is in this part of the book that the full power of modern approaches to experimentation become most evident. Here, he illustrates how a set of as few as eight experiments can be used to determine how three presumable independent factors, such as time, temperature and concentration, can be studied to obtain detailed information not only on how each factor individually effects the quality of the final product, but also on the extent to which the factors interact.
Historically, learning this type of technique for designing experiments has been a daunting task since somewhat tedious mathematically manipulations are required for both the design of the experiment and the analyses of the resulting data. However, included with Dr. Roy's book is complete software which eliminates the need for the experimenter to either manually solve the handful of equations needed to extract the results in useful form, or to develop custom spreadsheets in an attempt to automate the process. The software is easy to use and includes all of the tables and data which are used in the book to illustrate the principles of experimental design. The software is also capable of assisting the experimenter in designing sets of up to eight concurrent experiments, rapidly analyzing the data and generating graphical and tabular presentations which greatly aid in the interpretation of the results.
This is an extremely useful book which can have a major beneficial effect on the productivity of any laboratory engaged in experimental process research such as crystal growth, chemical synthesis or manufacturing. By allowing the reader to overcome his innate aversion to varying more than one experimental factor at a time, the book makes it possible for the reader to become a much more productive scientist or engineer and become a role model for his coworkers to emulate.
Must have for Quality Control Professionals and Educators.......2002-02-05
First, I completely agree with all the good things mentioned in the other reviews, but wish to add the following comments:
1. The discussion group (usenet) hosted by Dr Roy is fantastic. If by chance you don't "get it" from reading the book, a simple question posted to the usenet frequently gets you an answer, often within a few hours (its a vocal crowd!!). Many times, the author himself responds to usenet questions. And, on at least one instance, after I repeatdly asked my question, he began exchanging emails with me, which then led to some pleasant phone disscussions.
2. User friendly software and support. See above.
3. Taguichi is frequently attacked by full blown Design of Experiments statistical types who miss the whole point. I strongly encourage all professionals interested in gauging quality control to try out his books and the free software downloads....
An excellent book with powerful software and support......
Reads like a winner, looks like a winner, performs likes a winner....... need I say more...

User friendly.......2002-02-05
Dr.Roy's book is amazing. He has covered almost everything you need to know about the Taguchi method - even meticulous things. This book will suite both for beginners as well as for experts. The CD which comes along with this book is very helpful in understanding the concept behind the analysis with more than 50 examples. If at all you are looking for a book about Taguchi design of Experiments - I highly recommend one and all to buy Dr.Roy's book and benefit through his work.
I started as a beginner and now Iam an expert in Taguchi analysis - and the credit goes to Dr.Roy - he also helps personally in answering your questions.
Thank you very much Dr.Roy.
Three CHEERS to Dr.Roy!

DOE step by step with examples.......2006-10-28
DOE is the set of process improvement tools for studying more than one factor in a single experiment. The 92 page book is straight forward with many examples to show the methodology for setting up 2, 3 and up to 31 factor experiments which according to the author will cover >90% of the DOE requirements.
The workbook is filled with case studies and examples from manufacturing problems which guide you through the process and help evaluate your understanding before moving to the next section. The mathematical/statistical equations are a bit intimidating but these can be set-up in a spreadsheet. The author says that these DOE tools can be used on office or sales processes but never gives an example of one.
The value in this book is if you are doing a quality or six sigma project. Also, it will be of value if you are working in industries like chemical or mining, where yields are the key to success. The book shows the equations to use, the eight steps for analysis and the logical steps to creating an experiment. Additionally, it includes an appendix with T (95% confidence level) and F (degree of freedom) values which are necessary references if you attempt to do this without a statistical software package.
This book is headed in the right direction..........1999-09-09
This is the second least complicated book I have ever read on DOE. Thanks Larry for writing the book! I wish that it had MANY more examples showing each DOE type he covers...Also, there is a need to FURTHER elaborate in simpler terms all of the concepts. I am still not understanding why a DOE book can't come out that isn't easy to read!
Book Description
This revised, expanded best-seller is a powerful new tool kit for the 21st century. The book that crowned the quality revolution (with over 100,000 copies sold since 1991) is poised to make it happen all over again.
This new and expanded edition of the widely influential WORLD CLASS QUALITY not only provides more techniques and case studies, but also extends them into new areas (such as the service sector) and shows how to use them in a wider variety of applications. A new coaching emphasis makes it easy for managers to make these tools available at all levels of a company and even to customers and suppliers. The book also offers: * A practical way to secure top management commitment and make "Design of Experiments" a way of life at any company * A new reliability technique that simulates field failures at the design stage so they can be prevented before production * A new chapter summarizing related quality management and control techniques, making this an essential book for managers concerned with quality.

"Simpler" is better.......2007-09-20
Bhote has produced a treasure. All manufacturing professionals would do well to internalize this short book.
Besides explaining a simplified but very effective method of DOE (the Shainin method), this book does a great job of explaining another simplified but powerful SPC method: Precontrol Charts.
The explanation of Shainin DOE or Precontrol Charts are sufficient to make this book enormously valuable. Yet Bhote goes farther - he puts these tools into context within the overall production Quality system. He gives a lucid thumbnail sketch of the evolutionary stages of an organization's quality system, from what he terms "innocence" to "world class", and he does a convincing job of explaining the role of managment and of the quality professional in a manufacturing organization striving for world-class qulaity.
As if that weren't enough, Bhote includes an extremely powerful product design reliability tool -Multiple Environment Overstress Tests (MEOST)- and Poka Yoke (error proofing) which of course is both a design and a production methodology to achieve zero errors.
The criticisms of Bhote that I have seen generally come from two camps: (1) 'purists' who have disdain for simplified DOE & SPC charts, and (2) nit-pickers who are put off by Bhote's strong criticism of classical methods and annoyed by typos.
The bottom line is that the contents of this single book, in an amazingly concise manner, live up to the promise of the title. Implementing the methods as explained by Bhote will reduce variation to world-class levels and create a robust production system from design to finished product. The beauty of the Shainin methods which Bhote lays out is that they are much simpler than their classical equivalents, which makes their implementation much easier and thus more likely to be carried out.
Practical.......2006-03-01
The book explains excellent problem techniques in a very lucid manner. A must read for any process engineers, Six Sigma belts and any one in production/operation.
Some of the tools the author explains (like Multivary analysis) can be extended into a statistical study (ANOVA) and more detailed results can be obtained. I wish the author does some of it in any forth coming edition atleast as an appendix (if not in main text, to keep its simplicity).
It works........2005-09-18
As a process engineer I had spent a year with problem. There was nobody to solve it (in the multinational company). Together with my collegue, with two experiments (Component Search and Paired Comparision) we found the root cause and proposed the corrective actions - modification on tool. After implementation of our proposal the problem has gone forever!
Despite the fact that there are many mistakes in text, graphs, tables, it's the best book about Shainin DoE.
There are better............2005-07-01
I was somewhat confused when reading this book couple years ago to learn about Dorian Shainin approach. Fortunately, subsequent to reading this book, I read the following two much better books on Shainin's ideas:
Mnufacutring Solutions for Consistent Quality and Reliability by Robert Traver, 1995, amacom
Statistical Engineering by Stefan Steiner and Jock MacKay, 2005, ASQ Press
Practical.......2004-12-13
I'm not an academic in statistics and DoE but an end user to this advanced quality tools so I don't really care that much about the academic part of the theory so long as the methods help me in my work. What I find most interesting of Shainin's method is its practicality and ease of use. Keki has indeed done a great job in explaining the methods from his own industrial experiences without flooding the reader with too much theory. He used real life industrial application examples to illustrate his points which is something very useful to the practitioner like me. Although there're some typo errors in this book and could be frustrating but it makes you really read and understand the principle behind each method more carefully and that's good. After reading this book, I find an urge to share this new practical knowledge with my collegues because it is simply easy to use and yet powerful.
By reading this book and practising it in your work, it will becomes an assest to you. I'm not denying the contribution of the traditional DoE and Taguchi method because I felt that all methods are good as long as it is easy to use and at the end of the day help us to solve the problem.

Title says it all.......2001-08-03
This book is a great introduction to ballanced orthogonal experimental designs. The so-called Scientific Method (tweak one parameter while holding the other variables fixed) is not used that much where there are complicated interactions between variables. This Designed Experimental (DOX) approach is used more frequently in the Semiconductor industry. This approach envolves a series of experiments where all the variables are potentially changed form one trial to another, but in such a way that one can resolved the effects of one variable from another AND understand interactions and non-linear effects. It is simply the best way to optimize a complicated system.
OK, if you have SAS or RS/1 or ...packages you may ask yourself "why bother learning the theory." I would say for 2 reasons - if you need to manually intervene or supplement an existing experiment AND seeing some more designs that are very effecient (John's 3/4 designs and Plackett-Burman designs) for initial screening that is not ususally part of the packages.
Compared to Box, Box, Hunter this book is easier to read, has a huge summary fold out sheet and is geared to a practicing engineer or scientist not a professional mathematician. Best introduction and most likely the only book you will ever need on the subject.

Book Description
Continuing a best-selling tradition, the third edition of Quality by Experimental Design uses the same easy-to-read and understand format that made the previous two editions so popular with newcomers and experienced readers alike. Completely revised and revamped, the third edition has lost none of the features that made each of the previous editions bestsellers in their own right. Written in Thomas Barker's trademark, conversational style, the third edition includes new topics on inference, more realistic practice problems, examples using Minitab®, and a large dose of Robust Design philosophy and methods. Barker integrates the Robust Design, sometimes known as the Taguchi approach, as a natural part of the design effort and establishes a criterion for measurement variables. He provides step-by-step guides to the Minitab software that give you the ability to apply the concepts in practical applications and includes easy to use experimental design templates. The author presents the mathematical aspects of statistical experimental design in an intuitive rather than a theoretical manner. Emphasizing both the philosophy and the techniques for setting up experiments, the book shows you how to achieve increased efficiency, timely accomplishment of goals, visualization through graphical and numerical representation, and control of the experiment through careful planning. Those new to QED will find some of the most powerful ideas in scientific investigation and engineering understanding in this book. Seasoned QED'ers will appreciate the new insight it offers and timely reviews of subjects in which they may have become a bit rusty.

Clear up the confusion in DOE.......2007-02-04
Confused by ponderous text books?
Befuddled by incomprehensible equations?
Stymied by what to do next?
Miffed by academic professors who never designed an experiment in real life?
Put off by tricky SAS code?
Unable to do the job for your employer?
Shortchanged by the simplicity of a Six Sigma training class?
Ready to go back to the "old trial and error" methods?
Then you need Tom Barker's easy to read, right on the mark, student oriented guide to understanding and applying Design of Experiments - Quality by Experimental Design - 3rd Edition.
This book has been written for students who need to apply DOE, not the stuffy academic community that only thinks of the mathematical rigor. The equations in Tom's book are the same rigorous mathematical foundations as in any other book on DOE, but are set in a context of application. They are explained in simple language, not derived from axioms or lemmas. Equations in Tom's book come to life and do something for the reader. That something is the systematic and efficient uncovering of the complex reasons for product or process success and failure.
Barker's book is written for the current practitioner and the future practitioners of Statistical Experimental Design. Tom shows how to plan, how to build, and how to interpret and then how to use the results of powerful experimental design configurations. His insights are based on his experience at Xerox Corporation where he personally used DOE on thousands of investigations that were fruitful in the commercial development of the fledgling science of xerography that has become the successful product we all take for granted today.
As a student, you need this book now to help you understand the confusion in class.
As a product or process design engineer, you need this book now to make your efforts to get results fast and with excellent confidence.
As a manager of product or process development, you need this book now to enable you to lead your teams to success in the short development times allocated by the mandate of the ever decreasing product development cycle.
Outstanding Quality Text Book!.......2002-07-26
This is the best quality text book I have ever read! I learned so much and was able to apply it to my job and my boss has really noticed my increased contribution! Thanks Thomas B. Barker!
