Pretty thorough text for anyone learning or brushing up on their skills...quite intuitive.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best business statistics book.......2001-10-27

This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better.......2000-10-20

This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully.

Book Description

Lind/Marchal/Wathen: Basic Statistics for Business and Economics 5e is a derivative of the best-selling STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES IN BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, 12/e offering the essential topics of statistical tools and methods delivered in a student friendly, step-by-step format. The text presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, though the text maintains a focus on presenting statistics content as opposed to technology or programming methods, and the fifth edition continues as a ‘students’ text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.

3 out of 5 stars there are excellent, cheaper alternatives.......2007-10-20

Take a look at www.coventry-collegiate.com. Understanding Business Statistics, the book featured there, is independently published and sells for only $39.95 (new). It is clear, extremely readable and very student-friendly.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Basic Statistics.......2007-02-20

This is a well written and illustrated text book that describes the working of statistics. Definitions are placed in boxs within the text so the defination of a term is where you read the uses of the term. Review questions are also place within the text so the question follows the definition and explation of the statitistical information being taught. The book also uses web sites for information and examples, software programs such as Excel, to add to the learning experience. Included is a CD with power point lessons, and sample quizes.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book but..........2006-10-19

Yes, put all the extra features together, namely the student CD and the Visual Statistics together, this seems like a well-put-together solution for a beginner statistics course. However, it needs some help. The book could be more thoroughly indexed. Visual Statistics software does not work properly even with updates. Sentence such as "The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is obtained by summing the various sample means and dividing the sum by the number of samples" is not intuitive. This book has potential to be great, but it will take better teaching techniques than complex statistics talk.

4 out of 5 stars introductory stats.......2006-07-05

The book is essentially a standard introductory probability and statistics course, with an emphasis on the statistics. The business and economics in the title is mostly reflected in the examples given in the text, which have that orientation.

There is also no emphasis on formal proving of various maths results. The typical reader is not expected to be a maths major, and probably does not need it.

A useful feature is the CD that accompanies the book. It lets the reader easily use a computer to handle the tedious data inputting and number crunching.

1 out of 5 stars Aimed at a very specific audience: avoid if you are not a management scientist!.......2006-07-10

I am a little surprised at the high rating that this book seems to get from the current 13 reviewers but, then again, these are probably memebers of the books target audience. When Albright refers to "modelers" in his title he is constraining the definition very tightly to those in the business world who develop models for "management science". This book has little to do with the more general concept of modelling as it might be found in the physical sciences, engingineering, the social sciences and anything else you can think of outside of management science.

What is good about this book is that it provides a fairly basic introduction to VBA in the first part in a nicely laid out fashion. It then goes on to develop example code targeted very specifically at the management science student or professional. I think this is an admirable approach and this book is probably very useful to the "management scientist" who wishes to learn VBA as it is implemented in Microsoft Excel. It is also quite nicely written. I think that within its target market this is a book that could be recommended. However, if you are not into business modelling or don't make extensive use of the Solver Add-In that ships with Microsoft Office then this book is probably not for you.

Again, I wish to emphasise that this book is very tightly focused on a particular type of VBA developer: i.e. the "management science" specialist who makes extensive use of spreadsheets. As I said, the introduction to VBA programming is well laid out but there are better texts and this one is really very basic (excuse the pun). The scope of the book is not broad so don't expect to learn a lot about much of VBA that does not fall within the fairly narrow constraints of business modelling.

For a general introduction to VBA programming that is far more wide reaching than this book try one of the editions of Walkenbachs "Power Programming with VBA". If you are already competent in VBA or VB programming and want a good reference book on VBA with excellent examples and a very far reaching scope then there is nothing better than the Wrox books by Bullen et al: my "Excel 2002 VBA" serves as an irreplacable reference bible even after 4 years and an upgrade to Excel itself.

I am not a "management science" professional. I have been developing a number of fairly extensive specialist VBA Add-Ins as a scientist/engineer for several years now and I can honestly say that this book taught me nothing new. I didn't actually find anything wrong in any of the text or code that I studied but from my point of view the code examples are highly repetetive and very simple (definitely aimed at the novice VBA programmer). Possibley a great book for management scientists wanting to learn VBA but others can find far better in terms of both introductory texts and advanced programming texts.

For mangement scientists wanting to learn VBA I would give this five stars but for all other Excel users, or potential users, of VBA I can only give it one star.

4 out of 5 stars Gets your creative juices flowing!.......2005-04-14

The biggest problem that I see with learning VBA is not trying to figure out topics such as object hierarchy, syntax, or "if" statements (there are plenty of excellent VBA guides for that!) No, figuring out what to do with all of the "stuff" you just learned is the bigger challenge.

That is where Mr. Albright's book really stands out. While the first few chapters do provide some basic treatment of VBA, it's the other half of this book that really shines! Here you will find 16 full-blown programs that cover everything from industrial applications (process blending, product mix, production scheduling, etc.) to financial analysis programs (stock trading, portfolio optimization, etc) and much more.

In these 16 chapters is where you will learn to use all that "stuff." And not only use it, but get creative with it. Mr. Albright has done a brilliant job at not only walking through the code step-by-step, but also imparting to the reader the all important "why component." After spending some time with this book, you will undoubtedly be a better technical, and equally important, creative programmer.

5 out of 5 stars Tells you just what you need to know.......2004-11-11

This book is excellent for the person who simply wants to expand their ability to use Excel without becoming a VBA expert. Most books on VBA seem to be written for computer professionals who, for example, seem to want to know about every data type that can be handled before learning anything else. Most of us would rather just learn how to do the things we need to do. This book uses this much more useful route (for ordinary folks)and tells us how to do the basic kind of stuff that we need to do (and that isn't at all obvious how to do): Key topics are accessing data in a range of a worksheet, outputting data to a range, writing a function, etc. etc. It only tells you what you need to know and it explains it all clearly. I had banged my head against a wall before finding this book and it answered all my questions and dissipated all my frustrations. I've recommended it to many of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-09-22

Many Excel VBA books are a bunch of clever examples that you won't be able to apply to anything. This is the only book I have found with good examples about how to move around a spreadsheet using VBA. For some reason this is left out of most books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. More then satisfied !!!.......2004-07-02

Absolutely agree with Mr.Weiqin Xie. I took this book from corporative library with intention to get help for my first degree completion project in Industrial management, where I really needed to increase my productivity in processing a lot of data,
and just can't bring it back extending my holding over and over again. I have already ordered it and waiting for delivery. I not only successfully completed the project but started to develop useful utilities in my job and decision support application for my investments needs and all of this owing to just few first chapters.

Book Description

A surprise is how the complexities of voting theory can be explained and resolved with the comfortable geometry of our three-dimensional world. This book is directed toward students and others wishing to learn about voting, experts will discover previously unpublished results. As an example, a new profile decomposition quickly resolves two centuries old controversies of Condorcet and Borda, demonstrates, that the rankings of pairwise and other methods differ because they rely on different information, casts series doubt on the reliability of a Condorcet winner as a standard for the field, makes the famous Arrow`s Theorem predictable, and simplifies the construction of examples. The geometry unifies seemingly disparate topics as manipulation, monotonicity, and even the apportionment issues of the US Supreme Court.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars learn mathematics of voting.......2005-09-11

Great book! Interesting new theory developed to visualize voting systems. Can be technical - best used in conjunction with "Chaotic Elections", which is more of an overview. It is nice to see an application of mathematics that doesn't require a huge amount of mathematical training - just some familiarity with vectors and parametrizations of lines and planes. Accessible to many people interested in how math can be used to model voting systems, from high school onwards.

5 out of 5 stars The most important work since Arrow.......2001-01-19

This book is the most important work in social choice theory since Arrow's (1963) "Social Choice and Individual Values". Professor Saari (now at UC Irvine) used this book in an advanced graduate course I took in Fall 2000, and he covered nearly the entire book in a ten week course (hint to instructors and students: I would not recommend this suicidal pace, unless your students are very ambitious and/or very bright!)

The goal of the book is ambititous, and yet very simple. One of the biggest difficulties with voting theory and social choice is the "curse of integers or discreteness" - when we consider more than three alternatives, the number of alternative arrangements of voter preferences escalates quickly. This means that the main ideas in voting theory cannot usually be represented or analyzed by drawing a picture or using calculus, unlike most ideas in economics (eg the Edgeworth Box, demand/supply etc).

Saari avoids this problem by working with continuous spaces; he uses the geometry of the unit simplex (a familiar tool for most economics grad students) and the unit cube to analyze and explain just about all of the most important issues and results in social choice theory: cycling, manipulation, voting paradoxes, Arrow's theorem, Sen's theorem, the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem, and much, much more.

But the geometric approach is not just a cute pedagogic tool. On the contrary, the methods in this book allow researchers to state and prove new conjectures about voting methods using standard ideas from calculus, linear algebra, and basic high-school geometry; without these tools new results would be nearly impossible to even state, let alone prove.

The writing style is mostly informal, and many statements are not proved rigorously (they have only just recently appeared in the professional journal literature). Depending on your background this is either good or bad; but those with a graduate math background (like myself) can just go to the journals to find the proofs of statements if they so desire.

Probably the best part of the book is that there is a massive collection of problems at the end of each section - and many of the these problems are research questions in their own right. The other fun part of the book is that once you have learned to use Saari's geometric tools, you can create just about any crazy voting paradox you like in a couple of minutes, whereas this previously might have taken months or would constitute an entire research project. Therefore the book is very stimulating for advanced grad students and researchers in the field, as well as those encountering social choice theory for the first time.

Grad students - as a final inducement for reading this book, once you learn Saari's tools, you will be able to embarass about 99% of your professors and fellow students with your newly acquired skills. It is easy to find questions that are simply impossible to answer without using Saari's tools.

I would recommend the book to advanced graduate students in economics, mathematics and political science, and researchers in those fields.

5 out of 5 stars If you're technical - read this book!.......2007-10-24

This is a beast of a book for serious direct marketers only. Database heirarchies and the advantages and disadvantages of each for direct marketers. How to use statistics even if you didn't take statistics in college. Quantitative analysis and how to do it. It is challenging and thoroughly useful - but only if you really want to know the math, the mechanics and the structure of database marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book!.......2006-02-03

If you are looking to find a good book with examples, theorems and formulas about marketing data base promotion techniques, then buy this book it worth the money. I'd pay even more to have this book.

The authors show in detail how to segment your database using multiple formulas and techniques to reach each segment of your customers.

I encouradge anyone, students, professors or directors involved in the marketing business to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every dollar.......2003-04-17

As a consultant in the field of Database Marketing, the third edition of this book has rapidly found its place on my office shelf - a complex subject made easy through informative and well planned studies and examples.

I could not possibly remember all of this every time a client asks, but in one volume I have pretty much everything I need to know at my fingertips.

Whether you are a student, setting out on a career in direct marketing or a seasoned campaigner this book is an absolute must to get you up an running. It does not cover everything, and I suspect that some of the information on technologies and trends in the IT industry will soon be outdated, but you can always get that elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book on direct marketing.......2002-05-04

Great for beginners and experts, this text gives excellent step by step instructions on every pertinent direct marketing concept. This is the only good "how-to" book that you will find on such a wide variety of topics.

Relevant Topics include: Setting up a marketing database & using statistics to predict response &segment customers!

5 out of 5 stars A Reference Book with STep-By-Step How-To.......2000-12-09

This will be my reference book in this subject matter. It covers a lot of detail I'm convinced the authors have been collecting these nuggets since the first day they started working then poured it all out into this book. This is good and bad. It makes for a not-so-easy read. Some chapters almost just ramble this way and that. Wouldn't you rather a book err on too much detail than too little, though? I was very pleased though, that the book has many step-by-step how-tos. For example, what to include in a Functional Requirements doc, what to include in a system implmentation design doc. Fifteen steps of putting a Marketing Contact Program in place. This book is not an easy read. The chapters are written by different authors so you get a variety of styles, depth, rambling-ness. If you ever have the opportunity to hear THE David Shepard speak, don't miss it. I heard him give a 3-hour session at NCDM in Orlando this month. He is funny, engaging, delivers clearly and articulately and I learned a lot!

Book Description

This new text offers an Excel-focused approach to using statistics in business. All statistical concepts are illustrated with applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, and the text maintains a strong focus on presenting statistical concepts as applied using Excel, enhanced by MegaStat, the Excel add-in created by the author and used as a standard for all McGraw-Hill/Irwin Business Statistics textbooks. The text enables students to take full advantage of Excel to develop and drive problem-solving skills. As a one-color paperback, it is also a competitive low-cost alternative to most of the higher-priced books in the market.

1 out of 5 stars Oh dear........2007-02-25

This book is probably great for people who have a mathematical or scientific background, but the way concepts are communicated does not make much sense to people like me who are new to statistics and has not really picked up a math book since high school. A typical sentence that you are supposed to just read and go "oh yeah!" goes like this: "In discussing ANOVA, SSX becomes SSTotal... (followed by a formula)... where Xij is the ith observation in the jth group...". All clear. Thanks for that.

The CD tutorials sound like they were done while on Valium and Prof. Orris was sick to death of doing them over and over. Also, the tutorials are not compatible with a Mac so you will need access to a Windows PC.

To be avoided if you have the choice.

1 out of 5 stars CAn't stand this book!!! The author is so blah in his tutorials he bores the computer to death.......2006-08-28

It's very hard to learn the basics with this book, I did better reading from two other books. But for Megastat you are forced to listen to the authors horrible drab voice, he sooooo needs to pay someone else to do these voice overs. Listening to umms and ahhs not only lengthens the study time but he sounds utterly bored with the material and confused. He could say "I won a million dollars" and still sounds as it was the most dull thing to happen on the planet. I hope your teacher doesn't choose this book.

3 out of 5 stars Your Average Statistical Textbook!.......2005-07-17

This textbook just may not have been my style. For a Basic Statistics book, I would expect the focus of the learning would be on how to work out the problems using pencil and paper. I understand that today software such Excel and Minitab are valuable tools, however, this textbook could have placed more emphasis on understanding mathematics and statistical processes. To be extra critical, I think the information could have been organized differently for better understanding. The CD-ROM didn't provide any added value either. Otherwise, this was a very good textbook. I would recommend James Kenkel's "Introductory Statistics for Economics and Management."
