Book Description

The definitive, Jolt-award winning guide to learning and using Rails is now in its Second Edition. Rails is a new approach to web-based application development that enables developers to create full-featured, sophisticated web-based applications using less code and less effort. Now programmers can get the job done right and still leave work on time.

NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION: The book has been updated to take advantage of all the new Rails 1.2 features. The sample application uses migrations, Ajax, features a REST interface, and illustrates new Rails features. There are new chapters on migrations, active support, active record, and action controller (including the new resources-based routing). The Web 2.0 and Deployment chapters have been completely rewritten to reflect the latest thinking. Now you can learn which environments are best for your style application, and see how Capistrano makes managing your site simple. All the remaining chapters have been extensively updated. Finally, hundreds of comments from readers of the first edition have been incorporated, making this book simply the best available.

Rails is a full-stack, open source web framework that enables you to create full-featured, sophisticated web-based applications with a twist...you can create a full Rails application using less code than the setup XML you'd need just to configure some other frameworks.

With this book, you'll learn how to use Rails Active Record to connect business objects and database tables. No more painful object-relational mapping. Just create your business objects and let Rails do the rest. You'll learn how to use the Action Pack framework to route incoming requests and render pages using easy-to-write templates and components. See how to exploit the Rails service frameworks to send emails, talk to web services, and interact dynamically with JavaScript applications running in the browser (the "Ajax" architecture).

You'll see how easy it is to deploy Rails. You'll be writing applications that work with your favorite database (MySQL, Oracle, Postgres, and more) in no time at all.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down the best Ruby on Rails book I have read so far.......2007-10-24

This book is not easy for beginners, but it is the most accurate and thorought treament of RoR I have read so far.

4 out of 5 stars Required reading, but often frustrating.......2007-10-23

You need this book if you're going to be developing a Rails app, but there are some issues.

#1 -- Learn Ruby first. Although the book's jacket makes it seem appropriate for absolute RoR beginners, you need to know basic Ruby before you're ready to start this book. The author says as much in the first chapter. Ruby newbies may want to consider this author's Ruby book (I haven't read it) or the excellent "Beginning Ruby: From Novice to Professional" by Peter Cooper which is enjoyable and very well-written (which I have read).

-- Many (most?) Rails books feel like they were rushed to press. Perhaps I'm just a little too Type A, but the text sometimes reads as if it was dictated rather than written. Much is assumed or left unexplored. A bit more structure within each step of the app-building process would be very helpful in future editions. A quick outline of the app's classes and cethods, describing what each one does, would be helpful as well.

-- A few times the author resolves problems on pages after the code that caused them appears in the text. If you run into a show-stopper, read ahead to see if he resolves it before you go mad trying to debug your own code. A database session problem was especially annoying.

-- Some of the downloadable code examples from the publisher's web site don't seem to match the corresponding code in the book. It's unclear whether the publisher's code has been corrected or simply reformatted. Regardless, download their code and refer to it (or copy and paste it into your own) as you follow along.

So, take a deep breath and dig in!

5 out of 5 stars Clear as water.......2007-09-27

This book is a really good inversion if you plan to start you "RoR" experience, the way the book is written is very clear and in a good order, so you can understand better what's going on as you go along.

Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Agile Web Development.......2007-09-27

Great book to start off with. Has a good tutorial on building a shopping cart application. Then one can learn from that to develop a application that is unique for their business.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond great: best book, best reference, best index (and funny).......2007-09-19

I am an oldster (you know, 40+) and have learned many a language. Kernigan and Ritchie wrote their "K & R" C-language book in some written language a little higher level than English. After 40 or 50 reads through, I got it. I read C++ books, SmallTalk, Delphi, Visual Basic, and many Java books, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Awk, Emacs, REXX (!!), and just about everything O'Reily has ever published.

Now, I come to Ruby, and Ruby on Rails. Thank goodness for this book. What a relief to read a book that is 1) comprehensive, 2) practical, 3) accurate, 4) funny at times, and 5) above all, has a good index! Perhaps programming languages are (finally) getting easier to write about, but Dave Thomas is an outstanding technical writer: he knows his audience and writes for us. Look, I know a million programming languages, but I am not the kind of person who zips through a book and suddenly gets it. Most books are written by people who are experts in the nuances, but have forgotten the many steps that lead up to those nuances.

AWDWR is better. It starts with a non-trivial and complete tutorial -- the first half of the book is an application that manages to hit most of the critical aspects of actually doing the job. It is a reasonably broad application covering many points of real webapps. (I read through thinking, yeah, we managed to deal with that in our Java webapp in a month, and here it is, built in to Rails, and better ... more than once). Maybe it is Rails, which seems to be a significant step in maturity over current generations (my last was WebWork/Struts 2, which seems to be the best you can do with Java these days, but really only one part of the larger problem).

But I have to give great respect to Dave Thomas and the other great writers who all made this second edition book a great, great book. I could follow along when reading, I actually did the whole tutorial and found myself learning almost all the way through typing the examples in by hand (mostly by learning how to debug my typos and understanding how the language and framework responded). Now that we're writing our real software, we still look back at the tutorial to get a clear view of how all the parts fit together.

The second part of the book is a solid documentation of the components and APIs available. It is not complete, but nor should it be -- if you want the API, link to the Rails site API. It does cover the important points, however, and ties them back to the tutorial where appropriate. Various important aspects are covered in enough detail to get the idea across, but not so much as to be just a lexicon.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. If this is your first programming book, it will be a struggle, but less than most, and if you're a professional software engineer with one or two languages under your belt (and reasonable proficiency at the command line), you will find this a great reference for learning, and for doing.

Book Description

Faced with increasing global competition, every industry, business, and service organization is restructuring itself to operate more effectively. Cost-effectiveness and product reliability without excess capacity are the keys to successful activity in business, industry, and government, and these keys are the end results of methods engineering.

The 11th edition of Methods, Standards, and Work Design provides practical, up-to-date descriptions of engineering methods to measure, analyze, and design manual work. The text emphasizes both the manual components and the cognitive aspects of work, recognizing the gradual decline of the manufacturing sector and the growth of the service sector. The importance of ergonomics and work design as part of methods engineering is emphasized not only to increase productivity, but also to improve worker health and safety, and thus, company bottom-line costs.

4 out of 5 stars 11th edition.......2002-08-30

I am one of the professors Dr. Seifert is talking about in his review. I continue to use this textbook in both graduate and undergraduate classes on job design. Every semester I search for a better alternative, but am unable to find it. I find this book to be helpful and a good reference that incorporates ergonomics, work design, and methods engineering. (I also use old versions of the lab book that contain very well-made forms.) This text contains the best discussion of time standards I have seen. The 11th edition contains a new chapter on cognitive work. This is a topic I have always discussed and am glad to see formal treatment of it in the new edition. As with any textbook, I do not use it as the sole source of information taught in the classroom and would not recommend it as a sole source. I use the topics in the text to launch discussions and research papers on systems theory, lean, cycle time, environmental, process improvement methodologies, ethics, and other issues for manufacturing and non-shopfloor applications. I find the book especially useful in the area of work design and time standards.

Students have found these skills useful in the workplace. Many of our students work in process improvement and lean implementations. They use these skills to reduce cycle time and balance the lines to meet the demands of customers. Good implementation of lean requires knowledge of how to balance a line to meet customer demand, identify constraints, reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, understanding and dealing with change, cost/benefit analysis, and a direct understanding the relationship between the customer demand and production rate. This text touches on or covers in detail these topics.

I find that the book appears to focus on machine and operator efficiency and utilization, has a primarily decompositional view of work, and concentrates mostly on shopfloor operations. Even with these drawbacks, the text gives the reader solid information on improving workplace design and reducing cycle time while improving worker safety and productivity. I use the discussion on machine and worker utilization to compare and contrast with other manufacturing philosophies, and to relate what the text is covering to more 'big picture' aspects. Other topics not included are a good discussion of maintenance operations and quality. I suggest using other sources to incorporate those topics. All in all, the book is not perfect. It is a very good reference book and text book.

1 out of 5 stars 1955 Concepts in 1999 Edition.......2000-10-07

This antiquated textbook is still used at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The first edition of this book was published in 1955 and, after nine more editions, appears largely unchanged in its mentality. Specifically, the textbook is written for a time when corporations had legions of industrial engineers who did nothing but detailed and tedious time and motion studies. Unfortunately, today's dynamic manufacturing environment renders many of the authors' techniques impractical or even financially hazardous. For example, it emphasizes the need to maximize machine utilization (even if the machine is not considered a bottleneck operation). Practices like these lead to excessive inventory and sub-optimization of the collective manufacturing process. In summary, I believe this textbook does a great disservice to those manufacturing firms that have achieved dramatic productivity gains through the application of lean manufacturing techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the buy!.......2004-04-02

I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.

5 out of 5 stars A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02

This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.

3 out of 5 stars Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30

This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.

    5 out of 5 stars A matchless guide.......2003-08-03

While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.

    5 out of 5 stars Application Oriented.......2003-07-01

In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!

    Book Description

This book shows how to design products for all aspects of manufacturability and use multifunctional product development teams and Concurrent Engineering principles to:

DESIGN FOR LOW COST. The book shows how to actually design low-cost products. Chapters 1, 2,and 9 show how to minimize the 80% of a product's cost that is committed by the design and hard to remove later. Chapters 3 and 8 show how to optimize the concept/architecture stage where 60% of cost is committed. Chapters 6 and 7 shows dozens of ways to minimize and measure total cost.

DESIGN IN HIGH QUALITY. Chapter 10 shows how to design quality and reliability into the product with poka-yoke and 50 design guidelines.

DESIGN FOR LEAN MANUFACTURE. Chapter 4 shows how to design products for all the flexible paradigms: lean production, JIT, build-to-order, and mass customization. Chapter 5 presents very effective standardization tools.

DESIGN QUICKLY FOR FAST PRODUCTION. Chapter 3 shows how thorough up-front work is the key to quickly developing products, avoiding changes, & fast ramps. Over 200 design guidelines are presented with the latest new methodologies from the author's DFM seminars and consulting.

    BOOK OUTLINE

    Part I: Design Methodology

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of design for manufacturability and shows the problems that can be avoided when products are designed for manufacturability. It also shows how to overcome resistance, understand the myths and realities of product development, and motivate engineers and managers to design for manufacturability and do it right the first time.

The chapter concludes with benefits of DFM.

Chapter 2 shows how to use concurrent engineering to develop products in multi-functional design teams lead by an empowered team leader. Such teams are most effective when they have early and active participation of all specialties. The chapter shows the problems when this does not happen and how to ensure availability of resources. Just as Chapter 1 showed that the majority of the cost is committed by the concept, the key to getting products quickly to market is a thoroughly optimized concept/architecture phase. Product development phases are presented with the tasks that enable good DFM including: defining products to satisfy the voice of the customer with QFD; optimizing the product architecture and strategies for operations and supply chains; raising and resolving the issues early; concurrently designing the product and processes; and launching into production.

Chapter 3, Design for Everything, focuses early on a wide scope of design considerations. Early work on these considerations will minimize arbitrary decisions, which will reduce several categories of risk and minimize change orders. The chapter also shows how to use creativity and brainstorming to develop better products.

    Part II: Flexibility

Chapter 4 shows how to design products for lean production, build-to-order and mass customization

Chapter 5 shows very effective procedures to standardize parts and materials.

    Part III: Cost Reduction

Chapter 6 emphasizes the importance of minimizing the total cost and then shows many ways to minimize total cost by design.

Chapter 7 emphasizes the importance of quantifying total cost and then shows easy ways to measure total cost.

    Part IV: Design Guidelines

Chapter 8 presents 64 design guidelines for product design, including assembly, fastening, test, repair, and maintenance.

Chapter 9 presents 42 design guidelines for designing parts including how to design fabricated parts and parts to be handled by automation. The chapter also has a section on tolerance step functions and how to specify optimal tolerances.

    Part V: Customer Satisfaction

Chapter 10 shows how to design in quality and reliability with 28 quality guidelines and sections on mistake-proofing (poka-yoke) and designing to minimize errors. The chapter also shows product q

Good content although additional graphics would make the concepts easier to absorb. For a second edition, there is an astounding number of typos & grammatical errors, often 4-5 on the same page, giving the impression that it was rushed through production or compiled without a word-processor. 5 out of 5 stars best DFM book ever.......2006-12-08

This book saved my company. I am going to get a giant DFM tattoo across my shoulder. David Andersen is welcome at my company or in my living room any time of the year. I started a company with my advisor out of college and we *struggled* for 5 years to get things working. Let me tell you, this book changed everything. I gave a presentation on it that was more of a book report and everybody was on board. The way we choose vendors, the way we work with vendors, the way we ask, obsessively, all the questions up front, before we even commit to a design architecture, has changed our lives and refreshed our spirits. Mockups, vendor phone calls, impromptu team meetings, it all makes sense now. Everything they never taught us engineers in college. They taught us to design for functionality, not manufacturability. He is so right! Andersen "gets it". And there are like hundreds of DFM rules for all sorts of topics in the appendix. Read it, adopt it, present it, print out hte rules and staple them up all over. This is a book I should've had many years ago. What I found interesting with this book is the fact that it supports many of the arguments that have included in the subject I am dealing with. I regret not buying it earlier as I struggled with issues such as DFM and DFA and how they can improve the bottom line of an aerospace enterprise. What I also like about this book is that it goes straight into the subject, rather than going on and on over abstract concepts and theories that are not at everyone's reach. I always say that people in the industry don't have time for long and endless theories, they want the facts and answers on how they can improve (when they realize they need to improve to stay in business). I have to say that this book answers just that.

    Book Description

THE classic text on reliability engineering and management has now been fully revised and updated.
Practical Reliability Engineering provides a comprehensive, up-to-date description of all the important methods for the design, development, manufacture and maintenance of reliable engineering products and systems. Students, engineers and managers alike will find this a valuable reference source.
With emphasis firmly placed on the practical aspects of reliability engineering, the fourth edition provides extended coverage of mechanical, electronic and software failure mechanisms, design and testing. New sections include Petri nets for system reliability modelling, accelerated test and the M(t) data analysis method. Recent developments in international standardisation are discussed and guidance is provided on essential management issues. The inclusion of a draft Project Reliability Plan enhances the value to those involved in systems engineering and project management.
Practical Reliability Engineering fulfils the requirements of the qualifying examination in reliability engineering of the American Society for Quality (USA). The updated end of chapter questions make this a key text for students undertaking courses in quality assurance or reliability.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand a difficult subjet.......2007-10-23

It is a well organized book, with all the topics full covered in a easy way to understand. Depite it is a subjets sometimes a little bored, I find this book very interesting to read.

    5 out of 5 stars Buen libro.......2007-08-09

Lo que he podido leer deja ver que es un libro muy interesante que maneja los temas de una manera muy cercana a la realidad

2 out of 5 stars Only an average Reliability Text. .......2007-01-10

Heavy Electrical / Electronic focus. I only bought it because it was the required text for a Graduate Course, but hardly used it as I have other Reliability Engeineering texts (Modarres) which cover much of the same material in far more detail and with more clairity. I would only buy it if studying a course which closesly follows this text, otherwise, I would keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of reliability science and engineering.......2007-01-09

This book contains an excellent treatment of the mathematics for reliability analysis and prediction. It also has numerous, excellent examples that are particularly relevant to the Electronics Industry. I strongly would recommend this book to anyone involved in the instruction of Design for Six Sigma.

    5 out of 5 stars Must read!.......2006-10-26

This book is very well written for a subject as wide as reliability engineering. I enjoyed all the chapters in this book other than software reliability which I did not read. This book also forms a good reference for ASQ CRE examination. However if you want to read in depth on any of the chapters covered, I will recommend relevent industry standards (like IEEE, MIL etc). This book in most cases will give an excellent start.

3 out of 5 stars For use by "the initiated".......2007-02-18

While Gerald & Co's book may look like a good introduction to Oracle's manufacturing & supply chain management modules, it will make little sense to those who have never used the system or don't have access to it. Because I had three years of hands-on experience with Oracle's E-Business Suite, the book is useful and I'm giving it a 3-star rating.

Things that Gerald & Co. could have done better: more illustrations of what they write about. There are many "bells and whistles" in the software, but the book doesn't have enough "screen shots" to show you where they're located on an Oracle "form." I'm not satisfied with the case study, which they have placed in chapter 22. There are no screen shots there either.

Gerald & Co. are assuming you can navigate and know a lot of the Oracle lingo. If you are new to this, don't expect to learn it from this book. The audiences for the book are intermediate and advanced users.

One could also regard this as a reference book. Use it to answer problems you encounter while using the product or better understand what's going on. In this context, I'd rate it 3 stars, too.

    1 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction.......2006-11-03

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Oracle reference tool.......2005-10-17

I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works. In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company. I refer to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for the beginners.......2005-08-24

This book is very useful for the beginners as well those who want to brush up their knowledge on oracle applications release 11i.

Mostly it covers all Manufacturing & Distribution modules. Financial modules are not covered in this book. I was planning to buy a book and searching for it and finally ended up in buying a very useful book.

Main drawback is not much of screen captures displayed. So if you want to better understand you have to read it by sitting in front of applications screen and switching the forms as you read.

Overall the book is worth having it.

This book, is an excellent job, I WISHED ONLY I WISHED!!! that my tractor or my previous car (CHEVY) was designed using REAL ROBUST DESIGN METHODS BY TAGUCHI, in that way, I would not need to go to the repair shop every now and then... :=), enjoy guys, it is simply a MASTER PIECE! considering that I worked for a japanese company as well, this book is great!!! BUY IT you won't regret it... if you love this stuff as much as I DO!! Regards Marco Sisfontes, Phd, NYC.

5 out of 5 stars The Qiuality Engineering Manual.......2005-01-24

The handbook gives the true foundation for the supply of quality products or services. It focuses on the design of the product and it's need to perform correctly in the customer's use environment.

The thing I really like is the inclusion of case studies. The addition of actual applications enhances the understanding of the theory presented in the first part of the book. The case studies are also good thought starters for your applications.

    4 out of 5 stars Design handbook.......2007-10-17

Great book for any junior designer in or fresh out of school, lots of important informations on manufacturing processes and there design guide lines. Includes lots of tolerance charts (metric and imperial)and information on various material: form metal to plastics. The biggest weakness is the lack of information on the latest technologies (laser cutting, water cutting and prototyping). Still its a must

    5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for design/manufacturing engineers.......2000-02-12

I teach Product Design Engineering at Ohio State and I can honestly say that Bralla is absolutely the best single reference for working designers and manufacturing engineers that I've found. An incredible compendium of useful info on just about any manufacturing process you can think of, and plenty you HAVEN'T thought of, plus chapters on Design for Assembly, materials, economic considerations - you name it. The book is a bit pricey, but considering the amount of useful information packed into it, it's a steal. Bralla far exceeds McGraw-Hill's regrettably low standards for their handbooks - this one is a keeper!
