Book Description
Here is Dr. Shingo's classic industrial engineering rationale for the priority of process-based over operational improvements for manufacturing. He explains the basic mechanisms of the Toyota production system in a practical and simple way so that you can apply them in your own plant. This book clarifies the fundamental principles of JIT including leveling, standard work procedures, multi-machine handling, and more.

Detailed engineering description of TPS.......2003-10-12
There are a lot of books about the Toyota Production System, but this is one of the most useful for those actually attempting to implement elements of this system. Most of the books on TPS by western authers are just superficial glosses written by MBA's who don't seem to have a clue how to make anything. This book is detailed, specific, clearly written, and very well translated. Some of the material is repetative, nevertheless this is the book to get on TPS.
Excellant book to understand how the TPS evolved........1999-04-23
I enjoyed it since it gave me insight on how TPS evolved and allowed me to better understand not how TPS works but more why.

Good Summary.......2000-07-04
This was a good summary for busy managers. It covers the major ideas in a quick to read format.
Author has a newer book.......1997-06-05
This book is a very good summary of The Fourteen Points, developed by W. Edwards Deming. However, William W. Scherkenbach has a newer book that actually comments on many portions of Deming's work and gives excellent information on how to implement these ideas in your company. The title of this newer book is "Deming's Road to Continual Improvement," published by SPC Press

Good message, but would benefit from an editor.......2007-07-26
White has a good message: Our fear-based, looking-good tendencies are not healthy for us and perpetuate unhealthy behavior in others. He discusses why we become this way, measures he took to lessen this in himself and suggests how we can do likewise.
I did find the book tiresome to follow for a number of reasons including White's wordy, informal writing style, and his frequent reliance on quoting cryptic poetry.
I don't know if this has been recently corrected, but the copy I got looked like a draft: page numbers show as XX in the table of contents; numerous sections of the book simply have a section title and the words [to come] underneath; where graphics are supposed to be has [insert graphic here]; improper margins - the text seems to run off the page in places; and is full of typographic errors.
Grab a pen - you're going to want to take notes!.......2006-09-20
No matter how many times I read this book, something new always resonates with me. These are life lessons, and a lot of them seem to take a whole lifetime to master...but the pursuit is the worthiest you'll ever embark upon. I strive every day to shake my unhealthy "normal" behaviors and embrace the spirit of this book - one that is laughing, open-hearted, through life.
What a trip to take.......2002-12-05
Bowen White takes you to the ultimate place, your inner self. His insight into the human mind is incredible. If you are seeking to find more about yourself, and why you live the life you do, this is the book for you. I have heard this wonderful man speak live and have read his book twice. It is incredible to walk a trail of the world with him and look at yourself.
Normal's not only unhealthy - it can kill you.......2001-03-17
Bowen White M.D. truly opens your eyes about what's important in life and how the stress that comes from what other people put into your inbox can really take you down. This is an easy to read, step by step eye opener about how the things we accept for normal in our life are slowly killing us and the book gives you significant, solid steps on how to take control over your life back from the world we live in and really learn to live. I loved it.
author is a testament to his words.......2001-03-14
I've known Bowen White for many years and so my review could be considered biased........however, I can honestly say that he has always been "out there" i.e., not being so normal, making people laugh all the time, and strikes me as a very healthy person ... he follows his own words and ideas and has written a very honest book. I'd say we can all learn something from him. He spoke to a keen group of university students here on a recent visit and had a great time involving them in taking a different path toward solving life's challenges. His enthusiasm for life and for all people comes through in this book.

Book Description
At the beginning of the 1990s the German car industry had its back to the wall. Japanese competitors were demonstrating significant advantages in terms of quality and productivity. Consultants warned that only a few global car groups would survive. Instead of following the Japanese concepts of lean production, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and Audi developed a new innovative premium brand strategy and initiated a revolution in the industry by setting innovative benchmarks. This book analyzes the story.

Book Description
While formal quality management systems are a basic requirement for carriers doing business with the automotive industry, it is a company's understanding of key items such as leadership, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction that is needed to survive and excel in today's market. Shifting Gears brings a unique approach to quality in the trucking industry, clearly defining the issues that challenge a carrier's very survival of business and, through the principles embodied in ISO 9000, discusses practical measures for addressing these challenges. It identifies ISO 9000 as an effective management tool, offering information on how business leaders can reduce their costs, improve their overall business efficiency, and improve their competitive advantage in the marketplace. This quality management principles book moves beyond quality management principles to include methods for use in day-to-day operations, helping carriers easily shift gears to make these tools a part of the company culture.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and informative.......2004-08-19
Of all the industries in the United States and around the world, few are as challenging as the transportation industry and more specifically, the trucking industry. Comprising 5% of the GDP and with over 70% of the cities and towns around the globe solely dependent on trucks to deliver their goods, trucking is truly the backbone of the economy. However, high insurance rates and fuel prices as well as a constant shortage of drivers have made running a trucking company a very difficult endeavor.
Although in use by many different industries, ISO and other quality programs are rarely used by trucking companies. In `Shifting Gears', the authors present case studies and easy-to-follow information that carriers and shippers can use to improve the processes related to shipping and trucking. Based on the premise that quality is a framework for improvement, the authors identify eight specific ISO quality management principles within the book:
Customer Focus
Leadership
Involvement of People
Process Approach
System Approach to Management
Continual Improvement
Factual Approach to Decision Making
Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships
Because the book is written in non-technical terms, trucking companies of all sizes will be able to learn and apply the lessons and advice within the book. Reading `Shifting Gears' will not make companies' experts in ISO 9000 but it will clearly explain the importance of structured quality programs and get them on the right path.
As someone who has spent the last 13 years in transportation and who is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, I can attest that the trucking industry must embrace the quality principles of ISO and Six Sigma. Issues such as backhauls, revenue generation, freight pay and audit, OS&D, pick ups and deliveries, operating ratios, maintenance, etc., can be managed better through the use of a structured quality program such as ISO 9000.

Six Men Who Built The Modern Auto Industry
ASIN: 0262083329 |
Book Description
As the auto industry moves into its second century, it suffers from low margins and a sclerotic value chain that cannot evolve with customer desires. Inventories of many weeks pile up on dealer lots and at distribution centers around the world while executives applaud marginal improvements in factory efficiency.
Value streams based on Henry Ford's mass-production model from the early 1900s do not deliver the strategic flexibility that is needed in today's increasingly competitive and demanding market. With billions of potential product variations, customers still compromise by selecting from a limited number of products sitting at dealerships or at distribution centers. Those customers who dare insist on a specific variation not only wait weeks but also pay extra for the privilege of telling vehicle manufacturers what they actually want.
In The Second Century, Matthias Holweg and Frits Pil provide a comprehensive look at today's dysfunctional value-chain strategies, then systematically discuss the changes in products and in processes that are needed to bring about responsiveness to customer needs through build-to-order. They look beyond the dealer, the factory and the design studio to examine the web of relationships and dynamics that have brought the auto industry to its current low point.
Holweg and Pil argue that in this century the winners will not be those firms that search for larger and larger scale or those who run efficient factories, or those that squeeze the last drop of profitability from their suppliers. The winners, they say, will be those who build products as if customers mattered.
Customer Reviews:
A thoughtful book, but needs some editing and polishing.......2007-02-18
The Second Century provides a valuable, and rare, look at how the huge auto industry can be made profitable again. Very thoughtful book. And the authors did their homework.
Both authors are part of the MIT International Motor Vehicle Project. Their work updates and expands on The Machine That Changed the World, which is a great book but now dated. Given that the topic of The Machine That Changed the World -- lean production -- has become fairly widespread in the industry, this new look at "building to order" may be a pathway to profitability for carmakers.
But I expected The MIT Press to do a better job of editing. Parts of the book have a convoluted organization that makes it hard, sometimes even impossible, to figure out what the authors are saying. Typographical errors abound. Some lines, sentences, and even paragraphs appear to be missing. And some references to the figures were wrong, rarely but still often enough to be noticed. Perhaps authors and publishers do not bother with much editing and proofreading anymore.
Still, I have been looking for insightful books on the auto industry to match those of the 1990s. Few books do. The Second Century does. Highly recommended.
Outbound auto logistics leadership will come of age!.......2005-10-28
Reading Holwegs' and Pil's book gives a good oversight and easy-to-digest intro not only on challenges but also the market opportunities with BTO (build-to-order), and the importance of being truly customer-driven. Sam Walton's saying goes a long way: "There is only one boss - the customer..."
Just having completed an automotive outbound SCM industry analysis for a 2006 MBA 2005 I can see how the authors of this book provides a broad-brush state-of-the-industry. That's good. What's less good and what I would recommend each and every reader to do after turning the last page is to look around the corner into the near-future - because the industry's days as a trailblazer are not over.
However, in a single chapter the book provides for an excellent intro to drivers for BTO shifting from forecast to demand model, leading into chapters on flexibility with regards to process, product, and volume. In their closing section the authors note that the automotive industry includes quite a lot of cases of excellency, a few of which I have seen from a closer range.
What's not captured on these pages is today's exciting industry development of partnerships with independent logistics providers. These will help to connect with customers through dealers. The successful solutions will add capabilities through sophistication on the "inside" but need to come in "a package" of less complexity/more visibility for the industry's logistics co-ordinators that use them daily.
Other instructive books will surely target this, maybe another five years into the future compared to now. But for the avid reader this is a quick read to provide some fast industry insights.
Carl Sommerholt, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Global
A fascinating read about a fascinating industry.......2005-08-04
As a person who does research in the automotive industry I found the book to be an invaluable companion to "The machine that changed the world". The authors provide compelling analysis of the automotive supply chain and manufacturing process and its evolution in the recent years. The book is full of specific numbers, evidence and case studies which differentiate it from a number of other more anecdotal accounts of the automotive industry. This is a must read for researchers and anyone interested in knowing what is wrong with the current state of Big 3 US automotive companies.
A vital follow-up to the "Machine that Changed the World"!.......2004-06-26
Holweg and Pil provide a comprehensive analysis of the drivers - and inhibitors - of the performance of entire value chains. They show that in increasingly demanding and dynamic markets, the forecast-driven systems currently in place cannot cope, and the current incentive crisis in the auto sector marks just a case in point. Drawing on over a decade of research with the MIT International Motor Vehicle Program, they demonstrate that well-intentioned lean manufacturing programs, implemented in isolation, can create 'islands of excellence' - but may do so at the expense of the responsiveness and profitability of the whole value chain.
A great follow-up to 'The Machine that Changed the World' that demonsrates the need of, and road towards, a responsive build-to-order system that reconnects lean factories to the customer!
Excellent analysis of the automotive industry.......2004-06-24
Highly recommendable book for anyone interested in production management or current trends in automotive industry. Holweg and Pil describe the challenges of car manufacturers and the challenges they are facing. Although, "Built-to-last and made-to-stock" seems the way many companies are still heading, something new is required. The key points seem to be demand for build-to-order type of process and increasing product variety. Responding to this requires different types of flexibility.
This phenomenon has many parallels to other industry sectors such as fast moving consumer goods and especially electronics products. "The Second Centrury" is a continuum to "Machine that Changed the World". This is a great book for MBA or MSc courses in industrial management and it gives a critical perspective on many current practices.
