Book Description

The Art of Project Management covers it all--from practical methods for making sure work gets done right and on time, to the mindset that can make you a great leader motivating your team to do their best. Reading this was like reading the blueprint for how the best projects are managed at Microsoft... I wish we always put these lessons into action!" --Joe Belfiore, General Manager, E-home Division, Microsoft Corporation

"Berkun has written a fast paced, jargon-free and witty guide to what he wisely refers to as the 'art' of project management. It's a great introduction to the discipline. Seasoned and new managers will benefit from Berkun's perspectives." --Joe Mirza, Director, CNET Networks (Cnet.com)

"Most books with the words 'project management' in the title are dry tomes. If that's what you are expecting to hear from Berkun's book, you will be pleasantly surprised. Sure, it's about project management. But it's also about creativity, situational problem-solving, and leadership. If you're a team member, project manager, or even a non-technical stakeholder, Scott offers dozens of practical tools and techniques you can use, and questions you can ask, to ensure your projects succeed." --Bill Bliss, Senior VP of product and customer experience, expedia.com

In The Art of Project Management, you'll learn from a veteran manager of software and web development how to plan, manage, and lead projects. This personal account of hard lessons learned over a decade of work in the industry distills complex concepts and challenges into practical nuggets of useful advice. Inspiring, funny, honest, and compelling, this is the book you and your team need to have within arms reach. It will serve you well with your current work, and on future projects to come.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Project Management Guide.......2007-10-14

I guess I expected more after reading some of the reviews, but was disappointed to find out that it is a high level project management supplemental book. If you are a beginning PMer looking for a good book about the fundamentals of PM, this is not the book. The level of the content is for those who simply want a book that is more a novel than a help book.

5 out of 5 stars real world pm.......2007-06-29

An easy and fun to read book, based on real life examples and experiences. While reading it, I got many tips from the book and apply them in my onw work.

5 out of 5 stars project management with your feet on the ground and your heart on it.......2007-05-24

I really love this book!! I've read many books about how to run projects, to keep teams motivated, to be an effective leader, and I think this book compiles all of the above, plus it gives you a grounded point of view. There are no promises, only hard work and ways to improve your performance.
I've used some of the recommendations included in chapter 13: How to make things happen and, although is not a guarantee of success, I have accomplished some of my most difficult projects with it and the ones I didn't, at least I know why.

5 out of 5 stars highly practical and thorough coverage.......2007-05-12

Reading this book is almost as good as having a highly experienced mentor help you manage a project. The book provides very thorough coverage with sound, practical advice. There is a good list of reference material as well. I have been a software developer for more than 25 years and have managed several projects and still found I learned a lot from this book. I wish it had been available years ago. The book also provided confirmation for many of my beliefs about which I disagree with my current project manager. I hope to use this book to help convince him to change. I will be managing my own project again soon and plan to use use this book to help me succeed. Every software developer should read this book even if they are not a project manager. My only very slight criticism is that the book is most helpful to software product projects, but I think even internal development projects should be run as this book explains.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-09

This is a great book.
Filled with real-world wisdom, it prepares you for what to expect in the world of project management as a career option.
Especially usefull for people from software development background.

5 out of 5 stars This is a reference book, not an adventure novel.......2007-01-18

I purchased this to study for the CDT exam. It is very complete, but reads (as you'd expect) more like a specification than a textbook. Five stars for completeness, and five stars for cure for insomnia.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent counterpart to the AIA Handbook........2007-01-07

First off, I'm an architect, so my review is written from that perspective.

This is a great companion to the AIA Handbook. If the AIA Handbook is about running a firm, the CSI PRM is about running a project. An oversimplification, yes, but both books are so dense and full of critical information, no 100 word review could do either justice.

The CD includes many useful references including an overview of MasterFormat and a list of divisions / sections, but does not include the entire MasterFormat "product" (the full MF product includes 95-04 conversion tools and additional documentation).

My only complaint is that the text is so dense it takes a lot of time and energy to absorb all of the information within. :) It's as if they took a 1000 page tome and compressed it into 300 pages. (The product description says 1200 pages, but it's only an inch thick, so I'm guessing 300 pp.)

A must-have for architects who strive to deliver projects in a more expert and professional manner, and wish to more effectively interface with contractors during the construction phase. If you're a pure "designer" or only involved with the front end of projects this will probably stay on the shelf, but if you're responsible for the rest of the process (DD through construction and occupancy) this book is essential.

I can't believe I made it through 6 years of architectural education without being required to own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Purpose: Project management templates.......2007-06-11

The biggest part of managing a large project with deliverables is knowing the timing and details of your deliverables to make sure that all pieces are in place and planned for...time and resource wise. This book is a huge help in providing those pieces. Whether you use all the pieces or not it gives you the details you need to think through before you incorporate a deliverable and help you weigh how much detail and effort needs to be a part of it.

3 out of 5 stars I liked the book, but if you don't know 90% of this stuff already, you aren't in software........2007-05-12

There's a caliber of people called "project managers" that haven't taken more than a semester's worth of computer programming and software engineering, that this book is the most valuable for. If you're becoming a project manager as a computer science graduate or basement-life coder, for the first time on a project, then this book is also for you. It's good to have this information written out somewhere to see that it's not just one guy being a weenie when he suggests having a process and a revision control system-there is a science to software engineering.

However, through some experience that most everyone gets as a 'grunt', this is 90% of what people already know as common sense in 2007. Get a version control system for everyone. Come-up with a realistic deadline. Build-and-test so your customer can see the results, correcting you as you go.

I liked the book, it read easy-enough, it just wasn't the sage advice about things I didn't know that I didn't know, that I was hoping it would be. It did deal with things like having 4 different "bosses/customers" and the need to basically contract-out who dictates what features-unfortunately that was less than 10% of the book.

5 out of 5 stars McConnell's high level approach to Project Management remains valuable even today. Be sure to read his more recent texts.......2006-05-01

The Software Project Survival Guide by Steve McConnell remains applicable today as when first published in 1995. McConnell has a clear knack for combining research, experience, and theory. His writing style is clear, concise, and easy to understand.

McConnell approaches the topic of project management (design through to delivery) from a high abstract level; he outlines the best practices, provides comprehensive checklists, but leaves the fine details to other authors. McConnell States, "Whereas this book provides a big picture technical framework for a project, [Fergus] O'Connell's book focuses on the many specific activities a project manager must perform." (Part IV)

McConnell's writing style maintains a high sense of integrity and he always encourages personal research and development through his extensive use of external references.

      Selected quotes:
"Software development is inherently an exercise in climbing steep learning curves - an exercise in problem solving - and the learning curves don't disappear" (Chapter 17)

"No individual is a success who hurts the team, and no individual is a failure who helps it." (Chapter 18)

This is an excellent book, a great reference; although a little too heavy to be comparable to the "first aid kit you carry in your backpack" (Chapter 20).

The "Cone of Uncertainty" (chapter 3) and the "Survival Needs" section (chapter 1) were quite interesting. In the "Survival Needs" section McConnell draws many parallels with the basic human needs and the basic needs for a successful project. Similarly intriguing is his Project Team's Bill of Rights (chapter 1).

Be sure to visit the book's website it provides the chapter checklists in digital form and many other useful resources.

There is no one-size-fits-all or simple solution - this book is not an exception. Continue reading other project management books and some of McConnell's more recent texts like Software Estimation Demystifying the Black Art.

5 out of 5 stars Software leads need this book.......2006-03-14

Software Project Survival Guide is one of the best books I've ever read about leading a software project. The author is not trying to sell any specific process or methedology, instead the book is full of down-to-earth practical advice about software development. If you are a software lead, new or old timer, read this book. If you are a software manager, buy a copy of this book for every one of your leads.

4 out of 5 stars Common sense approach for all projects.......2005-10-05

Most of us have been involved with software projects that we would just as soon forget--or at least run away from screaming. If you want to learn how software projects should be run, or how to run one correctly yourself, then Steve McConnell presents a straightforward, common-sense approach that can be applied to all types of projects. The companion web site provides a complete collection of templates to support all aspects of managing a software project.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with good examples.......2007-04-24

Before I read this book I took more of a waterfall approach to my design projects. My clients weren't really involved much after the discovery meeting, proposal, and payment date requirements. Pay half now, pay half when we're done. That was the model we used. This book has taught me to take a more iterative approach, which really gets the clients involved. Our team can more effectively manage change and adjust our projects to meet the ever evolving needs of today's web clients.

The authors did a great job presenting "not so fun" information in a very digestable manner. They did so without being foolish "dummies". They also responded to a few of my email queries on subjects that I didn't immediately comprehend. Nice work guys.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book.... But minor editorial issue!.......2007-02-10

This book is a great book about project management for the web. It is insightful and provides very useful information. I especially liked Chapter 5 - Managing Change - and how the authors addressed common problems by providing a bulleted list of the symptoms and solutions to each type of problem. The authors' use of bulleted lists throughout the book work well and assist the reader with identifying key issues and/or things to think about. They also make it easy for the reader to quickly refer back to things and skim.

However, with that said, there is a minor editoral issue with this book. Everytime a bulleted list is presented the text leading into the list ends in a period (.) rather than a colon (:).

      To illustrate:
      - on pg 66, "Here are some tips for conducting a needs assessment." And the bulleted list follows.
      - on pg 186, "...and they will be testing for bugs or defects in some or all of the following areas." And the bulleted list follows.
      - on pg 268, "Here are some examples of successful Open Source products that are in widespread commercial use." And the bulleted list follows.

Having served as an Editor for several professional academic journals, this drove me absolutely mad every time I saw it. If the authors/editors of this book are going to be wrong, at least they are consistently wrong 100% of the time... which I believe is actually less maddenning then if they had gotten it right only some of the time.

If you can get past this minor editorial glitch that appears rather frequently, then definitely buy the book!

5 out of 5 stars Great reference guide for any web development PM........2006-12-13

Anyone working in Interactive Marketing, whether as a Project manager or Account Manager, should keep a copy of this book on their desk for everyday reference.

The authors provide a great information source for web projects, with chapters covering everything from the basic definition of the PM role within an interactive/web development project, to a detailed list of responsibilities for every team member. The chapters on team roles and Communication Cues are a must-read even for seasoned PMI certified PMs.

The rest of the chapters follow the standard PM process (Project definition, planning, managing the various stages of the project, QA etc), putting everything within the web development perspective. The real life case studies are a great learning tool, and anyone who has worked as a PM on a web/interactive project will undoubtedly must have already faced similar challenges.

Extensive chapters on Technical Build and QA are written without inundating the reader with tech acronyms and confusing jargon. On top of that, the book includes an appendix which addresses specific projects such as brochure ware, B2B portals, e-commerce web sites, intranets and e-marketing projects. Even better, a second appendix offers a great overview of what you really need to know regarding technology as it applies to the needs of a web development project manager.

Whether you are new to Project Management or a seasoned PM, this book is a must read and great reference for the next time you will find yourself managing a web project and a number of cross functional team members who all seem to have a different vision or agenda.

If nothing else, get this book for the CD. The content includes such useful sample forms like the creative brief, an issues log database, need assessment sample forms, and an excellent template for the dreaded technical specifications form among others. In fact, the CD content, along with the real life case studies, makes this a worthwhile purchase.

      4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2005-08-02

I'm working with a design studio that is now offering web services to its clients. This book has been very helpful, giving us a look at web projects and procedures.

It is skewed to larger projects than we will likely be involved in.

The best parts of the book are the descriptions of real projects and real problems.

Humor helps the message get through: that these kinds of projects frequently change, new problems crop up, people don't always react the way you'd expect and that it's all part of the job.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life..........2005-02-23

      It is true.

I was wondering: Why, given clints and good "implementors"-developers and designers (we are a small team), things go ugly every time?
This book gave me the answer - Poor management!

P.S This is my first book review ever.

      Book Description

Ship It! is a collection of tips that show the tools and techniques a successful project team has to use, and how to use them well. You'll get quick, easy-to-follow advice on modern practices: which to use, and when they should be applied. This book avoids current fashion trends and marketing hype; instead, readers find page after page of solid advice, all tried and tested in the real world.

Aimed at beginning to intermediate programmers, Ship It! will show you:

Few of the ideas presented here are controversial or extreme; most experienced programmers will agree that this stuff works. Yet 50 to 70 percent of all project teams in the U.S. aren't able to use even these simple, well-accepted practices effectively. This book will help you get started.

Ship It! begins by introducing the common technical infrastructure that every project needs to get the job done. Readers can choose from a variety of recommended technologies according to their skills and budgets. The next sections outline the necessary steps to get software out the door reliably, using well-accepted, easy-to-adopt, best-of-breed practices that really work.

Finally, and most importantly, Ship It! presents common problems that teams face, then offers real-world advice on how to solve them.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Highy Recommended.......2007-07-30

If you are familiar with the "The Pragmatic Programmer"(written by Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas) then you will probably recognise the Pragmatic Bookshelf series of books, set up by Hunt and Thomas, in which Ship It! is included. This series of books sets itself apart by emphasising the practical aspects of delivering software, and also doing it well.

The book is split into the following chapters:

      * Introduction
      * Tools and Infrastructure
      * Pragmatic Project Techniques
      * Tracer Bullet Development
      * Common Problems and How to Fix Them

From the very first chapter, the authors make it clear `Ship It!' is not another methodology, "There is no single, right way to develop software. There are a lot of wrong ways...". Instead, they have gathered together the `best' bits' of various styles and methodologies they have been directly involved with, and combined them into a practical approach with the focus on delivering a project. The authors do not expect you to necessarily implement everything they suggest all at once. Adopt one or two at time and determine if they work in your environment. This practical stance is reinforced throughout the book. A selection of the topics examined can be broadly listed as follows:

      * Use source control (for anything you want to keep)
      * Automate your build (one click)
      * Use continuous integration
      * Track issues and features
      * Write tests and automate them
      * Use mocking
      * Build end-to-end stubbed systems (Tracer Bullet Development)
      * Build teams and foster communication

It is easy to read and feels fresh. As another reviewer pointed out, "It's a rare book that speaks convincingly to both developers and managers, but this one does a good job". There is a definite emphasis on the positive; it is about how to make projects succeed rather than a post-mortem of why they fail. The chapter "Common Problems and How to Fix Them" is a gem, with practical advice for developers, managers and customers.

In Appendix E: Issue Tracking Systems, I was surprised to see that Gemini from CounterSoft (http://www.countersoft.com/) was not mentioned. I have implemented it at several sites with minimal effort and it has been used by developers and users with great success.

In Tracer bullet development, I agree with the approach to the end-to-end working `stubbed` systems, but I would also add that methods should also be written in such a way that the release version will throw an exception in any method that has not been implemented (rather than just returning a dummy value). Otherwise, years from now, you might find yourself mentioned on the DailyWTF! In some ways, it would have been nice to have had a worked code example for this section, but I realise the authors did not want to limit themselves to one particular language and restrict the reach of this book; I think they made the right decision.

If you are an experienced developer, then you probably will not find anything revolutionary or truly new amongst its 200 pages, but you might find something that your current routine is missing. Is this book worth reading? Absolutely. I would not hesitate for a moment in saying go out and buy it. Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars I rather choose joel.......2007-07-02

I liked the book and It is not expensive at all. It is really useful as a check list on things you need to deploy in your software development process. It will not be easy but for sure it payoff.

However, If you want a more tangential and funny approach to the same issues It could be interesting to read "Joel on Software".

4 out of 5 stars Practical but not Revolutionary.......2006-11-10

This is a good book to own if it's your first "software project" guide. It covers all the right topics and gives you plenty of detail to implement the ideas. However, I didn't find much NEW info.

Had it been one of my first project management books I would have rated it higher.

4 out of 5 stars Getting software out the door the common sense way.......2006-10-13

Following the line of Hunt and Thomas's The Pragmatic Programmer, this book is really a collection of tips and best practices for what the authors have found works well on real projects. It is not a detailed, scientific or process laden tome, rather just some common-sense ideas - some of which you probably do any way. I recommend it here because I believe reading it will help you put some perspective and substance around your build and release process.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it. Live it. Ship It........2006-06-26

We've seen enough books about "why projects fail." Finally, here is a book about "why projects succeed" and how you can help yours. The book is split into several areas. The two most important, in my mind, are the list of critical practices for developers to follow and the explaination of "Tracer Bullet" development. As the author notes right up front, this isn't a book about development project management. This is a book from a developer for developers. Independent of the project management style you use this book is going to help you complete your project and "Ship It!"

The list of critical practices are well defined and each one is simple enough to implement. It makes you feel like maybe you could do it. Most important, it explains why you should do it - in compelling terms so that even if you are skeptical of "continuous integration" or "pair programming" or "unit tests", well, you won't be after you read this book.

"Tracer Bullet" development isn't another methodology, but a way of incrementally developing a project so that the status is more clear to the customer and so that you can quickly turn abstract ideas that the team has into something more concrete to react to. In doing so, you maintain an integrated view of the product you are working on and help people understand their ideas more quickly. It is priceless for any non-trival software. Most of us probably have learned to do this anyway, but now there is a name for it and a guide to understand why we do what we learned through trial and error.

      Product Description

Release 1.3- Every question in this book is coming from the content of the PMBOK Guide. What makes CAPM Exam Practice Questions and Solutions different from other sample question books? The AME Group has designed the book with the goal of helping students obtain high exam scores. To achieve this goal, this book: * Is solely focused on the CAPM exam. Focus your time studying what is on the CAPM exam, not the PMP exam. * Includes not only a good description of why the right answer is right, but why the three wrong answers are wrong. You will get four times the learning from each question. Other books tell you the right answer, but do they really explain why the wrong answer is wrong? How many times have you understood that the right answer is good, but still not fully understood why your answer was wrong? In this book, there is as much focus on the wrong answers as on the right answers to set the record straight. * Provides references; every corect answer has a reference to the PMBOK Guide. How many times have you wanted to read more about the content of the question, in order to prepare for more exam questions similar or related to the topic, but have had no reference? * Focuses on the exam content, not on the topics of interest to the writers. Focus your time on studying what is on the exam--instead of what is not on the exam. * Grooms students to answer exam questions correctly by practicing test-taking strategies. See Part One for these strategies explained in detail along with sample questions using each of the techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful in passing the exam.......2007-09-10

Question-and-answer format complements the PMBOK guide, especially in the trickier areas. Use the questions to confirm your knowledge or to go back and look up specific areas of weakness.

5 out of 5 stars Must have study material.......2007-09-02

I would recommend AME Group's CAPM Book for anyone studying for the CAPM Exam and AME Group's PMP Book for anyone studying for the PMP exam. AME Group's book, PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, Release 1.5, was key in my passing the PMP exam on the first attempt and by a substantial margin! I think AME Group's books are 'must have' study material. AME Group's (Aileen's) questions and explanations of Best and Wrong answers accelerated the process of understanding content and the inter-relationships of the project management processes. For the CAPM Exam all you need is the PMBOK Guide and the AME Group Book. Also, I found Aileen's questions and solutions to be more representative of the exam than other references and much easier to digest.

      5 out of 5 stars A good investment........2007-01-06

This book is definitely a good investment if you are planning to take the CAPM exam. The structure of the study guide such as the explanation of the right and wrongs answers helps you further your understanding of the material. The only complaint I have is that there are several typos in the answer sections.

5 out of 5 stars Great for exam practice.......2006-10-22

Introductory material is excellant to help the reader understand what to expect in the exam. The questions and answers clearly describe why the recommended answer will be the right answer. The text is only designed to help drill for the exam -- it does not present any concepts. For concepts you'll need the PMBOK and other texts.

      5 out of 5 stars At last!!!!!!!.......2006-08-04

After searching for a comprehensive study guide a friend recommended this book and it was exactly what I needed. The format was totally unique...I loved it. I found the question and answer design truly prepared for taking the exam. Kudos to Ms. Ellis for making something so complex easy for me.

5 out of 5 stars Best and Affordable Tool for Passing the PMP Exam.......2007-08-14

Excellent book. Clearly explains what kinds of questions to expect, and trains you in answering those questions. Realistic questions and well explained answers. Looks like the author's teaching and project management experience comes together to make this book a worthwhile purchase.

5 out of 5 stars De Facto Book On the PMP Practice Exams.......2007-07-28

I am saying this from my personal experience: if you want to pass the PMP Exam, this book has got just enough practice exams to get you through the actual exams successfully. I found this book worth lot more than its price. Alternative? You can spend a couple of hundereds of doallrs to buy Rita's software simulation packagae and get tons of "tricky" and "complicated" and essentially repeating questions which will consume tons of your time, but the results will not be any better. The key word here is "realistic", and not "tricky" or "complicated; And the questions in this book ARE realistic...Very realistic...Suggestion: read the exam tips in the Introduction before going through the practice exams...It teaches you to look at the questions and handle them in the right way...
In reference to a couple of comments by some other reviewers, yes, this book has some typos, but which book does not? [I hope no book did]. In my opinion, those typos are less in numbers than in many other PM books...and they are trivial to figure out...Don't let that turn you away from this overall excelent resource, which is temendoiusly helpful in passing the PMP exam.

3 out of 5 stars Good exercise before taking the exam.......2007-07-20

This is a good exercise for your practice before the exam. However, I found some very obvious mistakes in the answers, so I doubt the accuracy of the answers. I also found there are repeating questions in the 3 practices.

I suggest the following book for the exam preparation instead,
"PMP Exam Prep, Fifth Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Passing the PMP Exam.......2007-07-01

I have just passed the PMP exam by using three books by this author: PMP In Depth, PMP Flashcard Quicklet, and this book. I did not use any expensive software simulation program for the practice exams. I think the practice exams in this book are very realistic and they helped me to pass the actual exam. Do not forget to carefully read the exam tips in the Introduction of the book. My only suggestion to improve the book is that the Exam Tips should be a chapter in itself, because not everybody reads Introduction. The answers to each question are very well explained and help you to identify the week spots in your preparation and re-enforce the important concepts.
Just enough number of questions and just enough degree of difficulty for the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Nugget for the PMP Exam Prep.......2007-06-09

I found this book contains very realistic questions. I really liked the exam tips. Read these before going through your Study Guide the last time because it enables you to determine what to look for while studying for the exam. I also liked the fact that each answer was explained in detail, why the right answer was right and wrong answers were wrong. It exposed the weak areas in my preparation. Going through the Quick Exam Prep at the end of the book, just before the exam, was also very helpful.
I passed on the first try.
