1 out of 5 stars Doesn't address fit problems.......2007-10-18

This book would be great for young people but it doesn't address the "fit" problems that I encounter. Being short 4'10", thick waisted. Things are way too huge in rear and legs if I buy to fit waist. Also being older (66)needed ways to alter places we droop.

5 out of 5 stars Way better than the others.......2007-10-15

This book has really impressed me. It has way better content than the Generation T book and the 99 ways book. This book can be helpful for beginner sewing as well. It runs through how to sew as well as some tailoring tips and how to use different notions and cut fabric. It's great! Much more bang for your buck! I checked out there website and got a really nice sewing machine.

5 out of 5 stars I know what I'm giving this year!.......2007-10-15

I found this book through the Generation T book and saw that this book has so much more information other than reconstructing a T-Shirt. A group of my friends and I get together and create new outfits that we go clubing in. It's so much more fun going out in something that you've made and that is original. The price of this book is super affordable so I'm giving it as holiday gifts to my girls. We'll be the bombest chicks in the spot!

5 out of 5 stars Who needs anything else?.......2007-10-15

I am in love with these books. I've found a new way of releasing stress by sewing. I'm making all sorts of clothes and saving some major money doing so. This book is great becasue it taught me to hem my own pants. I was paying Nordstroms $20 a pair of pants to hem them. They look professional and my husband is so impressed he has me doing his pants as well.

This book has been wonderful for my 14 yr. old daughter. She learned to sew with the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and moved into this book. Now she's reconstructing all sorts of crazy stuff. It's a fun and creative outlet for my kid. I'm happy she has picked up a positive hobby.

Book Description

Most people dream about someday owning a business, but dreams are often no match for the reality of the red tape and regulations involved in actually getting a business up and running. Small Time Operator shows the way. The most popular start-up guide ever written, it covers every aspect of small business ownership, including getting the proper permits and licenses; financing; choosing a location; creating an effective business plan; whether or not to incorporate; recordkeeping; setting up a bookkeeping system; hiring employees; insurance; federal, state, and local taxes; dealing with the IRS; franchises; doing business on the internet; and much more. This new edition has been updated to reflect current changes in the tax code and business management principles. Clearly written and fun to read, the book breaks down the seemingly complex process of opening a business into a simple step-by-step procedure — and helps turn the small business dream into reality.

5 out of 5 stars Major league advice for small timers..........2007-08-06

This book's reputation proceeded it and I found it to be all I was expecting. It is thorough without getting lost in unnecessary detail, and when more is needed, or advice specific to a region or subject, he leaves the reader with clear guidance on where it can be found.
As a self-employed contractor, designer, millwork and furniture maker, my 37 years of experience has born out all his advice and I have made my share of - if not all - the mistakes he warns of. And done some of the right things. He comes as close as I've found so far to a source of advice on not just what's right to do, but what's practical, what's realistic and (even) what people can get away with.
I will be using "Small Time Operator" as an adjunct text for the cabinetshop management classes I teach at our local community college.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16

The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.

Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.

I've bought and given away several copies of previous editions of this book over the years. I just ordered this new edition because previous editions have been full of practical advice on setting up a business and giving it a good start. It's also a lot of fun to read, believe it or not! Check out reviews on amazon of the previous editions.

5 out of 5 stars Not sure about newer versions..........2006-02-23

I have a version of this book that my father in law purchased in 1993. I know quite about about small business topics, and I learned so much of the little missing items from this book. My father-in-law has a million of these books on starting a small business, which he loaned to us when we started ours.
I quickly put the others down after scanning through a few chapters and not finding much information. All the books seem to be on choosing names, locations, and "Starting" a business. I wanted more information on "Running" our business, which is exactly what I found.
I scanned through a few pages, and what I read was so great that I went back and started from the beginning and read every word I saw. I truly found this book to be the most informative and realistic book out there.
I haven't purchased a newer version, because I still use mine. Infact I re-read many of the chapters every week, they are still valuable to me. This book sits right on top of my filing shelves.
I did, however, purchase the software from the bell springs website yesterday.
I use quickbooks and also a written record (using accrual and cash methods) and balance them out together. I really liked the forms he uses in the back of his book, they are so simple, yet really cover everything I need. That is why I purchased the software so I could use them.
My opinion of this book is very high, simply I beleive it is the best I have ever found. (By the way, Bell Springs Publishing website has a money back guarantee also) We run a service shop now, I hope to open a small retail shop soon, and I will be using this book for that as well. In fact I already am, to figure out how I will set up all my information on a different type of business.

3 out of 5 stars Small Time Operator.......2004-07-01

"Small Time Operator" by Bernard B. Kamoroff makes you wonder if he ever made it big or just remained small. I agree this is not the bible of business practices. However, the info isn't all that bad. It just lacks real meat.

1 out of 5 stars Not particularly helpful.......2004-05-27

There are better books on how to start and run a business. This one is long on words and short on useful, practical information. Reads more like an accountant trolling for business by harping on complications than a genuine self-help book.
I bought based on the recommendation of a (well-written) book on self-publishing. Wish I'd read Amazon's comments first and spent my money elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Not a BIBLE but a decent start........2004-04-25

First of all, let me say that I do not agree with the five star reviews nor do I agree with the 1 star reviews. That said, I feel this book is smack in between and does offer some useful information, especially for the newbie to business.

Five stars reviewers are too generous and 1 star reviewers are way too critical.

Good book and worth a read.

Great Books for Girls: More Than 600 Books to Inspire Today's Girls and Tomorrow's Women

This story is about a real girl who rises to meet a challenge that would frighten any adult. My kindergartner now holds this book near/dear as she sees it as a model of courage/bravery to aspire to. Even more exciting is that this story is based upon a real event in a real girl's life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2007-03-25

This book gives you an idea of what it was like to operate a lighthouse in the mid 1800's. Sure doesn't sound fun. In that sense the book is very educational, and it give hero status to a deserving individual that most people have never heard of. The only real flaw it has is in the format of its printing. I can't tell where one paragraph starts and another ends, so if I were trying to narrate this thing I would have a hard time knowing where to stop and start as far as the vocal intonation goes. I also think the introduction gives away the whole story on the first page, so it should really be put at the end of the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Example of Children's Historical Fiction.......2002-07-22

Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie is a well-written piece of historical fiction based on Abbie Burgess' own accounts and other historical sources. This information is provided in the note by the authors at the beginning of the book. All incidences appear to be very representative of the life of the time depicted. Abbie's character is developed well. The reader is able to see that Abbie is a strong young girl who does not want to let her family, especially her father, down. She faces the conflict of person vs. self and also person vs. nature is evident in the book. The theme evident in the book is bravery and strength. Abbie had to be brave to keep the lights lit. She needed the strength to overcome her fears and to live up to her father's expectations. The illustrations were beautiful watercolors that set the mood of the story.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not good enough.......2000-06-24

I have learned to be skeptical of financial privacy and asset protection books, most promise far more than they deliver--this book is no exception.

When it arrived from Amazon, my doubts began when I saw that the book was shrink wrapped. This usually means they don't want potential customers actually looking at the content in the bookstore. Also, the back cover prominently displays an internet site for the book. This Web site links you to the authors' professional Web site.

In my opinion this book is an overpriced infomercial for the authors' legal services.

The first one-third of the book is devoted to stating the obvious, that personal financial data is readily available for purchase and that our society is highly litigious. Is there anyone out there who didn't realize this?

Most of the rest of the book is devoted to an overly general discussion of various legal entities for asset protection and privacy such as corporations, family partnerships, limited liability companies, and trusts. For those who are unfamiliar with these issues, the book provides an adequate introduction to the topic. The book is 268 pages in length, but the author squanders page after page on filler, fluff and padding. Obviously, the authors want you to to go on to purchase their legal services.

In my opinion, the authors' enthusiasm for the limited liability company is a bit premature. This is a relatively new legal entity and there is not a large body of case law--especially in the complex and thorny area of asset protection. Also, there is no meaningful discussion of the all important tax implications of the choice of an LLC over that of a S or C corporation.

Despite the title, there is very little useful discussion of privacy preservation devices and there is much more emphasis on asset protection. The authors tend to overstate the protection afforded by privacy trusts and to understate the level of inconvenience that can result from their use--and there is absolutely no discussion of the costs of setting up and maintaining any of the plans they recommend.

I was particularly dismayed by one of their case studies in which they set up a privacy trust to hold title to the modest real estate and financial assets of an elderly client. In such instances, I would tend to advise conveying the residence to the person(s) she intends to bequeath the property to, while retaining a life estate to protect her interests. This would be much less expensive to set up and would have almost no maintenance costs, unlike the privacy trust.

On the plus side, the authors do a good job of warning people about offshore tax evasion schemes and other absurd internet scams.

Also, the authors overstate the benefit of keeping a low financial profile. Asset searches are quite expensive. A potential litigant who believes you have hidden assets may simply file the suit and in discovery (usually via an inexpensive interrogatory) will demand disclosure of all your interests in corporations, trust, etc.) If you perjure yourself and get caught--you're in big trouble. If you are not the big fish he thought you were, the litigant will at least try and pick up some chump change--and even the weakest of cases do have nuisance settlement value. Keeping a low profile is a great idea, but it is no panacea. What the authors call dangerous assets should be protected by some limited liability vehicle, but the choice between a corp. and an LLC is often more driven by tax implications than legal issues. Your first stop should be your accountant, not your lawyer.

While this book has some good points, it unfortunately seems to be intended to generate clients and legal fees for the authors.

I only wish the authors had written the book the title implies--a solid, detailed, practical manual on maximizing personal privacy. I believe there is a good market for such a book. There are already enough mediocre books on asset protection.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting for those concerned w/privacy.......1999-05-04

This book will make anyone think twice before giving out any type of personal information. There are several books written on this topic but none of them explain the issues they way Mintz and Doft do. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in protecting their privacy.

5 out of 5 stars An eye opening experience, very thought provoking........1999-04-26

I found the book very interesting. We all know we have less privacy today than yesterday, but this book brings it home in a very personal way. If you have assets, this book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advise from the top legal experts!.......1999-04-23

The Privacy Plan is the rarest find - a book that actually delivers what it promises. In a well written, clear and logical fashion the authors show how to protect financial privacy from a variety of dangerous intrustions. The authors explain in detail how others can gain access to our supposedly "private" bank and brokerage account records. That's fascinating material but most importantly, Mintz and Doft share their legal expertise and show us what strategies they use to protect the privacy of their clients. I have read other books on the topic of financial privacy and asset protection and there is nothing that comes close to the Privacy Plan. I give the Privacy Plan my highest recommendation.

    Book Description

The importance of starting early with a well-planned retirement program has never been greater. Because of inflation, it's practically impossible to predict how much money you will need in order to live comfortably after you retire. You can't count on Social Security benefits to support you either, but by establishing a savings plan at a young age, you'll be well on your way to a comfortable retirement.

Author William Cubberley has studied and followed the stock market for decades. Drawing on advice from countless brokers and other advisers, he has distilled the best in Investing for Smarties, tackling topics such as

Cubberley also includes his own insights on investing and on life. His anecdotes perfectly illustrate the points he makes in this entertaining, helpful guide to retirement planning. Investing for Smarties will help you understand why so few small investors prosper; it will also show you how to avoid the pressures you'll encounter as you plan for your future.

Finally, an investment book we can understand! "Investing for Smarties" is a book for people who invest, or want to, that is simple and easy to understand. It's actually usable! I hold two graduate degrees, one in Business Administration, and one in Public Administration. Part of that education was taking courses in and studying the macro-economic system (world-wide) and the micro-economic system (US related). Studying Finance as it relates to the market was often complex and frustrating. I frequently found myself asking how such a system could ever have been devised, much less be understandable. Then, thinking about investing years later caused me to re-visit the system to select where to place my dollars. The scale and magnitude of the system hadn't changed much, so I sought help with an investment firm. That proved to be less than a stellar idea, and after again investigating how to properly invest, moved to a firm I now enjoy.

I've often thought about keeping up with the investments rather than having a third party do so, but just never found a book that explained it all in simple terms - how do you properly invest your money and trust that it will be there when you need it? Well, let me tell you, such a book exists. Mr. Cubberley has written a great book that literally everyone should own and read. The small investment in time and resources to go through this book are so well worth it. His descriptions of how to make the system work for you are excellent.

After reading this book, and finding that I wished I'd had this book many years ago, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for every family and every person to read this and follow the instructions. At the very minimum, you'll get a great education in economics and the market you didn't have before. Using the information in "Investing for Smarties" can literally help you decide when and how to invest and have success doing so. You'll avoid making the same mistakes so many others have made, and you'll learn the simplicity with which you - not an investment company - can improve your financial well being.
