Book Description
Models, Methods, Concepts and Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy
Process is a volume dedicated to selected applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) focused on three themes: economics, the social sciences, and the linking of measurement with human values. (1) The AHP offers economists a substantially different approach to dealing with economic problems through ratio scales. The main mathematical models on which economics has based its quantitative thinking up to now are utility theory, which uses interval scales, and linear programming. We hope that the variety of examples included here can perhaps stimulate researchers in economics to try applying this new approach. (2) The second theme is concerned with the social sciences. The AHP offers psychologists and political scientists the methodology to quantify and derive measurements for intangibles. We hope that the examples included in this book will encourage them to examine the methods of AHP in terms of the problems they seek to solve. (3) The third theme is concerned with providing people in the physical and engineering sciences with a quantitative method to link hard measurement to human values. In such a process one needs to interpret what the measurements mean. A number is useless until someone understands what it means. It can have different meanings in different problems. Ten dollars are plenty to satisfy one's hunger but are useless by themselves in buying a new car. Such measurements are only indicators of the state of a system, but do not relate to the values of the human observers of that system. AHP methods can help resolve the conflicts between hard measurement data and human values.

Book Description
This text presents the various mathematical methods used in militaryoperations research in one easy-to-use reference volume.
The reader will find the calculations necessary to analyze all aspects of defense operations, from weapon performance to combat modeling. The text is so clearly written and organized that even newcomers to the field will find it useful.
Included with the text is an updated version of Defense Analyses Software, a compendium of software subroutines that allow the reader to compute numerical values for functions or tables derived in the text. Each subroutine is provided with a detailed reference to the equation from which it was derived to ensure that its intended application is consistent with the assumptions used in the derivation. The 2nd Edition included a new chapter on optimization methods with several typical examples showing applications of linear programming. The 3rd Edition has a new chapter on the theater missile defense based on the concept of layered defense with different strategies of allocating defense interceptors against short- or mid-range ballistic missiles.
This text is a highly recommended reference for defense analysts, researchers, and professionals entering the field of military operations research.

Mathematical Methods in Defense Analyses, Third Edition.......2000-06-05
This continues to be a comprehensive text on many useful mathematical and statistical techniques with particular relevance to the modelling of Defence operations. Familiar topics include combat modelling, which is analysed in more depth than in most other books. However, this topic like others in this book, suffers from explanations which are not always to the point or as clear as they could be. This third edition has two new chapters, one on optimisation methods with examples of the application of linear programming The other new chapter presents the sort of `analysis' which has become prevalent in Defence; really more of a scenario exploration, and considers in particular theatre missile defence. Possibly the most valuable addition to this new edition is the updated `Defense Analysis Software', which anyone wishing to seriously use or teach this sort of material to advanced undergraduate or postgraduate students, will find very useful. I would recommend this new edition to all people working with models of Defence activities and as a reasonable text for courses, although the price remains a little high.

Customer Reviews:
A book for graduates--Not undergrads.......2003-10-28
After the first week of our class falling behind, my professor mentioned to our class that this book was the wrong format for undergrads. So this book is only good as the teacher and the students. It's easy to read, but hard to understand. And, the CD-ROM was not user-friendly enough, but had an awesome integration into MS Excel. I aced all of my math classes in college (undergrad), but this class...I'm not gonna to ace. But if you aced all math classes and you're using this book for a grad class, then go for it. Otherwise, find another book.
Great Book.......2001-12-12
I had one of the worst instructors on the planet this semester. I literally had to teach myself this entire course.
This book made it so much easier. Great diagrams, simple explanations. I ended up with an A.
Easy to follow.......2000-09-17
This book is easy to follow and the included cd makes solving the problems easy. It also has online links for each chapter.

Book Description
Facility location is concerned with the siting of one or more facilities in a way that optimizes certain objectives such as minimizing transportation costs, providing equitable service to customers, or minimizing the time taken to deliver emergency services. This handbook presents a wide-ranging survey of location analysis. Both researchers in the subject and practitioners concerned with the solution of real-world problems will find this an up-to-date and comprehensive volume which addresses all the major methods and applications in the field. Each chapter has been written by an expert on that particular topic, and the editor has taken care to ensure a uniformity of style and notation throughout. The book is organized into four parts: Methodology and analysis of facility location.- Various objectives in facility location.- Competitive facility location.- Routing and location.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE.......2000-08-02
If you are studying queueing methods or are an OR practitioner, then make this a mandatory text. If you are using Kleinrock or Gross & Harris, then buy this as a supplement!
This is a "quick and dirty handbook" for queueing! Mr. Hall not only provides you with the basics for understanding waiting line methods, but he also discusses how to design queues that minimize the waiting (time & psychology). I have numerous books on queueing methods (Kleinrock, Gross & Harris, Tanner, etc.); this one is the one to have on your desk!
Superb!!!.......1998-11-13
The title is off-puting to many mathematicians and engineers because it seems narrow. Nonetheless, many have caught on that this is a superb book by a real world practitioner in modeling who has great knowledge of the theory. The eminent queueing expert Ralph Disney gave this book a rave review in The UMAP Journal (of which I am reviews editor) and I myself have used this as a textbook in graduate courses on modeling and simulation. Highly recommended!

Book Description
Around the world, liberalization and privatization in the electricity industry have lead to increased competition among utilities. At the same time, utilities are now exposed more than ever to risk and uncertainties, which they cannot pass on to their customers through price increases as in a regulated environment. Especially electricity-generating companies have to face volatile wholesale prices, fuel price uncertainty, limited long-term hedging possibilities and huge, to a large extent, sunk investments.
In this context,
Uncertainty in the Electric Power Industry: Methods and Models for Decision Support aims at an integrative view on the decision problems that power companies have to tackle. It systematically examines the uncertainties power companies are facing and develops models to describe them - including an innovative approach combining fundamental and finance models for price modeling. The optimization of generation and trading portfolios under uncertainty is discussed with particular focus on CHP and is linked to risk management. Here the concept of integral earnings at risk is developed to provide a theoretically sound combination of value at risk and profit at risk approaches, adapted to real market structures and market liquidity. Also methods for supporting long-term investment decisions are presented: technology assessment based on experience curves and operation simulation for fuel cells and a real options approach with endogenous electricity prices.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Computers and Operations Research, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This paper presents several Arcs-States models that can be applied to numerous vehicle routing problems, one of which is the well-known vehicle routing problem with capacities and time windows. In these models, the variables correspond to the states (i.e. the resource quantities) of the vehicles when they travel through an arc. The LP relaxation of the problem provides a lower bound that can be embedded in a branch and bound algorithm that solves the problem exactly. However, for the pseudo-polynomial number of variables and constraints of our models, column and row generations have to be used. Generally, in a branch and bound algorithm, the lower bound needs to be very efficient to minimize the size of the branch and bound trees as far as possible. One of the models we present, the time-only, relies on a relaxation of the Arcs-States model where a resource is removed from the states in the variables. Although the quality of the bounds decreases, the global resolution time is greatly improved, as illustrated on instances of Solomon's benchmark.
