Book Description

The market-leading textbook for the course, Winston's OPERATIONS RESEARCH owes much of its success to its practical orientation and consistent emphasis on model formulation and model building. It moves beyond a mere study of algorithms without sacrificing the rigor that faculty desire. As in every edition, Winston reinforces the book's successful features and coverage with the most recent developments in the field. The Student Suite CD-ROM, which now accompanies every new copy of the text, contains the latest versions of commercial software for optimization, simulation, and decision analysis.

Operations Research is an emergent science!!!
This book provides a complete approach to Hard OR, like modelling and all the required Mathematics...
Winston is an old fox at this area. His books are previoulsy accredited!

3 out of 5 stars Standard Text - Riddled with Flaws.......2006-12-04

I'm guessing you're on this page because this is your textbook. It works reasonably well for a text, but there are many, many errors. One important problem you should check IMMEDIATELY when you get your copy: some versions double printed pages 705-736 and did not print 737 to 768. These would be the first sections of chapter 13 -- Decision Making under Uncertainty. It is pretty important for the stochastic course, but not so important for the deterministic course (the first part of the book). There are websites that have errata, but even the errata sheets I've found are incomplete. Hopefully your prof should be aware of the flaws. I would NOT recommend this book if you have a coice in the matter. Many of the errors are very confusing to new students.

This book is quite informative on its subject; however, it is not the easiest to read.

5 out of 5 stars the best network flow book for computer scientists.......2004-12-18

I've been using this book as the primary text for my class in
"Network Flow Programming" (senior & graduate level) at the
University of Tennessee for about 10 years. Prior to that time
I had used Jensen & Barnes' Network Flow Programming (now long out
of print). The code in Jensen & Barnes is in FORTRAN (not so fun
or useful for CS majors) and the intended audience seemed to be OR.
Ahuja's code is pascal pseudo-code for the most part, which usually
translates easily into the C language that most of our students
use.

For CS students, there is excellent use of algorithm analysis
(big-O) throughout the book, and there are long discussions
about different approaches and algorithms and the complexity of
each. There is a lot of mathematical notation, but my students
have never had to worry about PDEs and the like here. Any good
advanced CS student (graduate or undergraduate) will find the
book very worthwhile. In my course the students must implement
min-cost spanning trees, shortest paths, critical path/PERT
networks (not in Ahuja), max flow, and min-cost flow. I would
also recommend (for CS majors) Tarjan's excellent (and
succinct) Data Structures and Network Algorithms.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Book .......2004-12-13

This is a good introductory book. I particularly liked the applications of the problems, introduced in the book. The main negative point that I could mention is, the redundant explanations and discussions you might see in different chapters. I would say the volume of the book could have been reduced by some 15%-20%, if the authors had chosen to be more concise.
The book, Combinatorial Optimization by William J. Cook, et al, is an alternative. It covers a whole lot of topics and is just too succinct, a little more elaboration would have been appreciated !

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Network Theory and Application.......2003-09-25

This book contains a lot of great algorithms for network flow theory and it also contains many of the great applications, which are very useful in practice. This book is very completed. Personally, I learn a lot of new things about Multi commodity Flow, which are the use of Lagrangian Relaxation, Column generation, Resource allocation techniques for solving multi commodity flow. There are also the good chapters in Convex cost flow and Generalized Flow and good appendix in complexity. Beside this book is very easy to read and understand. It is a great idea to have if you are in OR or IE major. :)

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST on Operations Research (Deserves 6 stars).......2005-06-10

I think this book is the best up to date reference on Operations Research. The book is very well written, very didactic and addresses mainly the practical use of OR. That is, the book isnt so good for algorithm details but it is superb on modeling, interpretation and examples.

4 out of 5 stars Good writing style.......2003-04-15

I am in my first semester of an MBA program. The required text for my OR/MS class (An Introduction to Management Science, 10th ed., by Anderson, Sweeney, Williams) left something to be desired. I work with the SAS programming language, and happened to be discussing the SAS/OR product with a SAS technical support rep. He recommended this Winston text. I think it explains concepts much better than my Anderson text and has helped me a lot in my OR/MS class.

5 out of 5 stars From Deterministic to Stochastic.......2002-08-27

This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for undergraduate engineering students.......2001-12-27

I have used this book for five years in my Operation Research classes. Its emphasis is in the mathematical modeling. The explanations are complete and clean. But, the exercises are the best part: a lot of examples and modeling exercises. A very good book for engineering students.

Book Description

Text Mining Application Programming teaches software developers how to mine the vast amounts of information available on the Web, internal networks, and desktop files and turn it into usable data. The book helps developers understand the problems associated with managing unstructured text, and explains how to build your own mining tools using standard statistical methods from information theory, artificial intelligence, and operations research. Each of the topics covered are thoroughly explained and then a practical implementation is provided. The book begins with a brief overview of text data, where it can be found, and the typical search engines and tools used to search and gather this text. It details how to build tools for extracting and using the text, and covers the mathematics behind many of the algorithms used in building these tools. From there you'll learn how to build tokens from text, construct indexes, and detect patterns in text. You'll also find methods to extract the names of people, places, and organizations from an email, a news article, or a Web page. The next portion of the book teaches you how to find information on the Web, the structure of the Web, and how to build spiders to crawl the Web. Text categorization is also described in the context of managing email. The final part of the book covers information monitoring, summarization, and a simple Question & Answer (Q&A) system. The code used in the book is written in Perl, but knowledge of Perl is not necessary to run the software. Developers with an intermediate level of experience with Perl can customize the software. Although the book is about programming, methods are explained with English-like pseudocode and the source code is provided on the CD-ROM. After reading this book, you'll be ready to tap into the bevy of information available online in ways you never thought possible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to mining the Net.......2006-07-03

Software developers learn how to mine information on the Web and turn it into valuable data; but developers need to understand how data mining works. For a programmer's application-oriented review, Text Mining Application Programming is the item of choice: it reviews text data, how it's found, and how search engines locate and gather it. Next, it teaches how to build spiders to crawl the Web, how to use the information, and how to monitoring it. Perl developers will find its Perl-based code useful, but it's not necessary to know Perl to run the software herein. An excellent guide to mining the Net.

5 out of 5 stars How to Find Information.......2006-06-07

There is an old expression that half of knowing anything is knowing where to find it. And there is little more frustrating to be looking at 'My Computer' trying to find what you know you have stored in a file somewhere. Well, perhaps just as frustrating is to go to one of the search engines and try to find something that you know is there but just don't know the proper words to find it.

In this book Dr. Konchady talks about how to go find data that is in text form on your system, on your network or out on the web somewhere. It talks about search engines, but also about other techniques that can be used only by programming.

The CD that comes with the book contains several Perl software snippets that help to find named entities, parts of speech, phrases and gives a summary of text documents. This area includes developing web crawlers that can be adapted by individual users to go out and find specialized information. It further contains an Open Source software package called Text Mine that is designed for mining operations. In addition it has utilities to build and enhance Text Mine and utilities to build and manage MySQL database tables. This is an excellent book on everything from the basic hints and types through some of the mathematics that underlies text mining.

His section on the nature of an English language Question and Answer system is the best I've ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a tool shed.......2007-09-06

As one of the previous reviewers noted this book offers no (very few to be accurate) proofs. While I would normally pounce on an author for neglecting proofs and rigor, Winston approach is rather refreshing and practical. It is like a tool shed filled with tools that one may use without completely understanding its composition. This book is very accessible to people who are not very mathematically apt and provides a gentle introduction for those advanced in mathematics. If you want a general introduction to LP and NLP before you dive into the meat and potatoes (rigor and proofs) or if you want to just pick up some methods to optimize operations related tasks, I highly recommends this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2006-03-21

This isn't your regular review here, because I'm guessing we all "have" to buy this book when we take the course.

This book is very helpful for students of all levels. I took it for an "operations research" class after more than 7 years of not studying any math. Still, the first few chapters offer a recap of algebra needed for the course. In the subsequent chapters, everything progresses slowly with lots of examples, (which is helpful if you miss a class or two).

Good luck with the class using this book then.

5 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2005-09-23

Package arrived in orderly fashion. Everything that was suppose to be included was shipped. ie. the Book and the solution manual.

    Book Description

Here is a book devoted to well-structured and thus efficiently solvable convex optimization problems, with emphasis on conic quadratic and semidefinite programming. The authors present the basic theory underlying these problems as well as their numerous applications in engineering, including synthesis of filters, Lyapunov stability analysis, and structural design. The authors also discuss the complexity issues and provide an overview of the basic theory of state-of-the-art polynomial time interior point methods for linear, conic quadratic, and semidefinite programming. The book's focus on well-structured convex problems in conic form allows for unified theoretical and algorithmical treatment of a wide spectrum of important optimization problems arising in applications.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference source for convex optimization.......2002-03-29

Lectures on Convex Optimization is devoted to well structured
and efficiently solvable convex optimization problems, with
an emphasis on conic quadratic and semidefinite programming.
The authors begin with linear programming, and then progress
to conic programming. [I really enjoyed their description
of the transition from linear to general conic
programming!]. They then discuss two special conic
optimization problems namely second order cone programming,
and semidefinite programming. Numerous applications of conic
programming espcially in filter design, Lyapunov stability
analysis, and structural design are presented. The book concludes with
a discussion on the computational tractability of convex
programs, and primal dual interior point algorithms to
    solving general conic optimization problems.

One can then take on the likes of Renegar's recent book
    on interior point methods, and
Nesterov and Nemirovski's seminal treatise on the general
theory of interior point methods in convex optimization,
    at a more advanced level.

My only minor comments are :-
    (a) The organization of the book as a series of 6 lectures
is misleading, since there is quite a lot of material
    covered in each lecture.
    (b) The book has a very short [almost
    nonexistent] bibliography.

All in all, a good workout and an encyclopedic source for
anyone interested in theory and applications of convex
    optimization. Highly recommended!.

      Book Description

MARKOV CHAINS: Models, Algorithms and Applications outlines recent developments of Markov chain models for modeling queueing sequences, Internet, re-manufacturing systems, reverse logistics, inventory systems, bio-informatics, DNA sequences, genetic networks, data mining, and many other practical systems.

The book consists of eight chapters. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the classical theory on both discrete and continuous time Markov chains. The relationship between Markov chains of finite states and matrix theory is also discussed. Chapter 2 discusses the applications of continuous time Markov chains to model queueing systems and discrete time Markov chains for computing. Chapter 3 studies re-manufacturing systems and presents Markovian models for reverse manufacturing applications. In Chapter 4, Hidden Markov models are applied to classify customers. Chapter 5 discusses the Markov decision process for customer lifetime values. Customer Lifetime Values (CLV) is an important concept and quantity in marketing management. Chapter 6 covers higher-order Markov chain models. Multivariate Markov models are discussed in Chapter 7. It presents a class of multivariate Markov chain models with a lower order of model parameters. Chapter 8 studies higher-order hidden Markov models. It proposes a class of higher-order hidden Markov models with an efficient algorithm for solving the model parameters.

This book is aimed at students, professionals, practitioners, and researchers in applied mathematics, scientific computing, and operational research, who are interested in the formulation and computation of queueing and manufacturing systems.

        Book Description

Customer-Oriented Optimization in Public Transportation develops models, results and algorithms for optimizing public transportation from a customer-oriented point of view. The methods used are based on graph-theoretic approaches and integer programming. The specific topics are all motivated by real-world examples which occurred in practical projects. An appendix summarizes some of the basics of optimization needed to interpret the material in the book.

In detail, the topics the book covers in its three parts are as follows:

        1. Stop location. Does it make sense to open new stations along existing bus or railway lines? If yes, in which locations? The problem is modeled as a continuous covering problem. To solve it the author develops a finite dominating set and shows that efficient methods are possible if the special structure of the covering matrix is used.

        2. Delay management. Should a train wait for delayed feeder trains or should it depart in time? The author builds up two different integer programming models and a model based on project planning methods. Properties and solution methods are developed.

        3. Tariff planning. Part 3 deals with the design of zone tariff systems, in which the fare is determined by the number of zones used by the passengers. The author presents a model for this problem and approaches based on clustering theory.
