Great Introductory Book.......2007-01-14
This is an excellent introductory text for Operations Management(OM). I highly recommend this book if you are starting to learn OM.
Amazing, most practical book at college education.......2006-05-08
I am using this book for my business class. This book will teach you in-depth principles and skills on how you can manage business operations with a lot of mathmatical skills.
I feel that this book is great because it is very well organized and easy for readers to read. It has graphs and visual aids all over and CD materials for students to go through problems.
By learning this book, readers can not only gain the knowledge on business operation, but they can also have actual skills in operation management.
Buy this book if you are interested in this subject.
Review.......2006-03-19
The book came on time in good condition. The price was rather high but the convience of having it delevered to my door the next day was worth the extra cost.
Operations Management.......2005-09-24

Black Belt Memory Yogger .......2007-03-09
The Black Belt Memory Yogger is a handy pocket guide for people involved with six sigma processes. I like the why use it and what does it do questions. Good quick review of basic statistics and tools.
Handy and Useful, but pricey.......2003-02-21
This book is a concise reference for use by practitioners and those on the shop floor. I use it daily in our one square mile manufacturing complex.
Our people understand the tools with help of the illustrations. The how to use the tools is clear. Sure some may be overwhelmed by the statistical detail; however, the graphs are useful in showing folks what we as a team are working towards.
At only 265 pages, this spiral book is pricey, but that's expected from the millionaires of the Six Sigma Academy. ASQ's entries into this segment pale in comparison. Overall, I use it in any public course offering I teach. Keep it simple!

COMPLETE MISREPRESENTATION.......2007-04-06
This seller sent the wrong text with the wrong ISBN, even though it is an edition of this text, it's not what was advertised. Also, I paid for expedited shipping and received it non-priority along with making an extra donation who pocketed the difference. BEWARE!!!
If I could import the pics of what I was sent, I would
Excellent survey of operations management.......2007-02-07
This book is comprehensive, up-to-date and well-written. The 'technical notes' appended to some chapters provide a little mathematical underpinning to discussions of topics like queuing theory, SPC, and linear programming, but the emphasis is on practical applications and there are plenty of worked examples.
The target audience deserves to be much greater than aspiring or actual manufacturing managers. By setting OM within a strategic context, by addressing both services and products, and by covering the entire product lifecycle, this book equips anybody concerned with performance improvement in any business with an indispensable toolbox. It's virtually an MBA in a box.
Operations Management for Competitive Advantage.......2007-01-13
I was unhappy with this item because some important product information was omitted from the site, and I was unsure that I was ordering the correct edition of the book I needed.
Operations Management - Chase, et. al........2006-11-14
Great text book. I am very hapy with it.
Operations Mangement for Competitive Advantage.......2006-07-14
Great textbook for OM class. It has DVD and other supplemental applications that are helpful for learning more. I use this book for an online class and reading the materials are easy to understand. The authors are very knowledgeable and their examples are good. I especially like the videos on the DVD.

Interesting book.......2007-10-08
Reading a text book has never been so much fun. I read this during my MBA classes. Why won't every author write their book and drive the point home with such fun stories that don't just drive the point home, but also keep it there forever?
Excellent Hilarious Novel for Learning Management.......2007-10-03
"The Goal" is a hilarious novel but with a serious business message particularly with respect to production/operations management. The author expertly wove an intricate story about a plant manager (Alex Rogo) whose factory and marriage are failing into a compelling and convincing explanation about how to deal with constraints and bottlenecks effectively, not only in business but also in everyday life. This is a good captivating read particularly for those who find reading business and management books to be dry and having a soporific effect.
Alex Rogo's life is made very difficult by bottlenecks, constraints, excess inventories and pressure from management that demands efficiency in the factory operations. However, through mastering the theory of constraints (TOC), the appreciation of a business as a system, the effective use of industrial engineering techniques as well as common sense, Alex and his team overcome the problems.
This is an enlightening book that is easy to read and understand for people particularly those who a new to managing an organization. You will learn about the goal of an organization, waste (and how to avoid it), cost structures, team utilization, supply chain bottlenecks, identify improvements, work prioritization and enhance efficiencies.
You will get the most from this book if you also read the Toyota Production System which can fix many of the problems highlighted in this book. Among the highlights of the Toyota Production System are the Just-in-Time inventory system, production leveling, multi-skilling, the pull method of production planning which provides a more comprehensive approach to manufacturing operations. Another useful investment is to get a copy of the classic book "The Fifth Discipline" by Peter Senge (if you have not yet read it). Senge proposes the "systems thinking" method to help companies to become "learning organizations" that integrates all personnel levels and functions (such as production, human resources, finance etc) to increase the ability of the organisation to be more productive and effective.
In summary, this is an outstanding book packed with insightful wisdom that I recommend to employees at all levels in an organization as well as students studying business.
fast and cheap.......2007-09-12
I received this product in good time and condition. Brand New. Saved quite a bit of money over the campus book store price.
Solid read applicable to business and beyond.......2007-07-29
The Goal is a well-written book, broadly applicable to anyone in business and to an extent life in general. It is a no-nonsense novel, utilizing and exploring real-life situations and personalities. What I liked most about the book is the integration of "scientific" approach to business, how assumptions are constantly questioned, explored, and reformulated, and how the human element is, albeit slightly, interwoven.
While the most benefit clearly is in manufacturing context, I find the book to be useful and I work in professional services. I akin the Theory of Constraints ("bottleneck management") to Stephen Covey's example of "moving big rocks", hence the applicability to life in general. Said another way, I believe one must focus on the things that are most constraining (the boundaries), and this method of thought is explored in The Goal. The book also interweaves personal experiences into the "core" business theme, which allows for some examination of life outside of work and of course personalizes the story.
Overall, great book and a suggested read for sure.
The Goal.......2007-06-08
If you told me that a story about cost accounting in a factory would be interesting I would say you are nutts. However this story is extremely will written & entertaining thru the first 80%. The finish concerning philosophy could be left off.
I would listen to the book until I reached the end of a chapter because it was interesting even when I had arrived at my driving distination.
I do have an accounting background so that may affect my opinion.
Book Description
Featuring an ideal balance of managerial issues and quantitative techniques, this new Fifth Edition of Russell and Taylor's comprehensive introduction to operations management keeps pace with current innovations and issues in the field, particularly those related to the impact of information technology and the global business environment on OM. The authors present the concepts clearly and logically, and help students see how OM relates to real business.
Russell and Taylor recognize that many students struggle with the quantitative material in their Operations Management course. That's why their text offers extensive collection of exercises and solved problems, along with outstanding problem-solving support, including eGrade Plus. eGrade Plus links problems from the book to relevant sections in an online version of the text, and provides opportunities for practice and a quantitative survival guide.

Customer Reviews:
Falls short of being World Class.......2007-10-21
This is a book that is being passed around work. A very simplistic book an introductory look at 2 different ways of looking at and doing a manufacturing process. I don't know if I would recomend this book except if you wanted a quick and fast look at the two different ways. The major draw back is that it doesn't look at the problem areas of the other way. Basically the "American" way and the "Japanese" way of manufacturing.
I guess I expected more after reading all the glowing reviews in the front of the book. It is an ok book but not great.
Heere we go again..........2007-01-14
Another book fawning all over Toyota and the Japanese as being the absolute masters of production. No one but them can possibly produce anything properly. Oh, wait, did this book mention that it was AMERICANS who showed the Japanese modern production methods immediately after WWII? By golly, they left out that little detail.. you probably don't hear that too much, but look it up if you don't believe me. For all of the 1950's and most of the 1960's, "Made in Japan" was not a good thing to see on a product. Only in the past 30 years have they gotten good. I won't deny that American companies have gotten sloppy, and they need a cold hard slap to wake them up. But, I think that some of these books go a little overboard heaping praise on Japanese methods.
Best Primer on Lean Manufacturing.......2007-01-14
This easy to read book outlines all the concepts of lean manufacturing in an entertaining and understandable manner. I make it required reading for all my Manufacturing Engineers, Department Managers and Supervisors.
Keep It Simple Stupid.......2007-01-12
Many books on lean manufacturing today try to over complicate things by adding in a lot of jargon and so called smarts. This book doesn't do that, and the the beauty is the reader really gets to the heart and soul of lean manufacturing with being bogged down by some academic trying to tell you how smart he is about it.
Joe's gets all the major points of the Toyota manufcaturing, and the way it puts in context makes it clear and easy to understand.
Useful book.......2007-01-05
This is a really simple, easy to read book for people who want to know things about manufacturing.

Read the fine print on this seller.......2007-08-12
Great book as supplement to MBA course - my review of the seller isn't so great. His posting specified the CD as included but it wasn't, and when I contacted him he said there was never an indication the disc was included. It was, in fact, part of the title of his posting. Unfortunately it was required for getting the most out of the book, so this seller let me down.
Book Description
Inventory accuracy starts with an understanding of the conditions under which errors occur and ends with error-resistant processes, intelligent use of technology, a well-trained and highly motivated workforce, and an ongoing process of continuous improvement. In between, there's cycle counting, root cause analysis, process evaluation, user interface design, procedures, employee training, accountability, control methods, process checks, audits, exception reporting, transaction techniques, measurement, counting methods, bar codes, RF systems, speech-based technology, light systems, and software.
Inventory Accuracy: People, Processes, & Technology covers all of these topics and more in a comprehensive treatment of the subject of inventory accuracy in distribution, fulfillment, and manufacturing environments. In addition to documenting the standard tools and techniques used to achieve accuracy, the author provides insights as to why many of the standard solutions don't provide the best results and offers alternative methods. The focus on practical solutions that take into account the sometimes-conflicting priorities that affect accuracy, results in an approach that not only looks good on paper, but more importantly, works in the real world.
Customer Reviews:
A very, very basic book...there has to be better.......2007-05-28
This book is very basic and appears to be very dated. Several times I had to look at the copyright date to ensure it wasn't that hold. With a copyright date of 2003, I thought it would contain more up-to-date information. If you want very, very basic information, than buy this book. If you are already in warehouse distribution, this book will not help you at all. The advice that is given is so basic and not very helpful.
Inventory Accuracy 101.......2007-01-23
Book is written using easy to understand terminolgy. Glossary was invaluable tool.
Piasecki is the Man.......2007-01-04
David Piasecki is a very knowledgable fellow. But more importantly, he has the ability to communicate like an average Joe, not some academic.
This book is easy to read, and has lots of funny cartoons anyone dealing with warehousing or inventory can appreciate.
As far as actual content, Piasecki discusses what works, what works better, and the reasoning behind all of this. His many years of experience clearly shine through in this read.
Check out his website too, it has alot of useful information that compliments the book.
Inventory Accuracy in action.......2006-09-21
As a cost analyst for a mid-sized manufacturer, I found this book invaluable for setting up analyses of cycle counts, and it was THE guide for putting together a full physical count process when our parent company demanded it. It's a pleasure to read (yes, this, a book on managing inventory, is a PLEASURE to read!); Piasecki's take on what a physical count is REALLY like is priceless. He really has a complete grasp of what it means to have human beings managing inventory. See his chapter on what machines and humans each do best.
Takes a dfficult subject and make it easy to understand..........2005-10-05
Fantastic and essential resource for those wishing to understand and implement inventory accuracy and cycle counting in their business practices.
Book Description
The ability to bring new and innovative products to market rapidly is the prime critical competence for any successful consumer-driven company. All industries, especially automotive, are slashing product development lead times in the current hyper-competitive marketplace. This book is the first to thoroughly examine and analyze the truly effective product development methodology that has made Toyota the most forward-thinking company in the automotive industry.
In The Toyota Product Development System: Integrating People, Process, and Technology, James Morgan and Jeffrey Liker compare and contrast the world-class product development process of Toyota with that of a U.S. competitor. They use extensive examples from Toyota and the U.S. competitor to demonstrate value stream mapping as an extraordinarily powerful tool for continuous improvement.
Through examples and case studies, this book illustrates specific techniques and proven practices for dealing with challenges associated with product development, such as synchronizing multiple disciplines, multiple function workload leveling, compound process variation, effective technology integration, and knowledge management.
This valuable book:
Highlights the application of value stream mapping methodology to product development. Identifies and defines the categories of waste that are specific to the product development process. Presents countermeasures and proven practices, based on Lean principles, developed for the product development process used at Toyota. Illustrates and clarifies the methodology by presenting actual case examples at Toyota and a U.S. competitor.
Readers of this book can focus on optimizing the entire product development value stream rather than focus on a specific tool or technology for local improvements.
Customer Reviews:
Toyota system- A good book.......2007-10-07
I bought this book as a part of my classroom text material. It's an interesting book that talks about how Toyota uses its system to achieve lean manufacturing by integrating people, process and technology. This is coupled with the lean design guide book for our text. It is informative.
A must read for those who want to study the next product development frontier!.......2007-06-18
This book is based on lean product development in the automotive world and has some shortcomings when it comes to applying what Toyota does to other industries. However, with Toyota's success lately their are few arguments against not studying how Toyota approaches product development and applying it to our specific industries. I think the hardest thing for most American companies will be having the long-term discipline to implement what Toyota has done.
Academic Review of New Product Development.......2007-05-28
Although this book is very popular today, the authors offer no new approaches to new product development. Companies should strive to leapfrog Toyota. Similarly to Demmings' focus on quality, every aspect of Toyota's NPD process was first developed in the USA, which still ranks as the World's leading innovation source.
Best book about Toyota PD.......2007-05-08
This is the third book I've read about Toyota and by far the best one. I'm an engineering manager and found dozens of simple, new ideas in this book. This is a very thorough & practical guide to the inside workings of Toyota's PD system. There are many examples and sufficient details that you can easily understand them and also try to implement them in your own organization.
Excellent reading for OEM........2007-04-05
Very interesting topics covered. Strongly recommended for engineers in the automotive industry.
