It's a book about MS Project.
It tells us about MS Project with pictures and words.
It is a book.
The End.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent BOOK.......2007-07-29

I find this book very easy to read. I am a beginner and the book is very friendly describing the info. Go ahead. You will not regret paying the $$$. The good thing that every keyword in the text is blue-colored. If you read the fist part (5 chapters) you will understand the PM very well (if you are a novice). Good for students and professionals too. The CD attached for practicing is very easy too. I am happy.

5 out of 5 stars Top of scale.......2007-07-16

This is the 7th purchase from here and I have yet to be anything but well satisifed. This one tops the list as it was helpful right of the shelf at my new job. The boss was happy so you can gues how I feel.

4 out of 5 stars Good to Start With.......2007-06-09

Covers the basics very good.
However, not very comprehensive. OK as a first book in this field.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This IS the book!.......2007-07-27

Yes, it's big. Yes, it costs $60+. Yes, it has some "stuff" in it that experienced managers don't need. Yes - this IS the best MS Proj reference book out there. I've read many of them and still have to keep hitting blogs and vainly searching through help to find answers. With this baby on your desk, YOU have the answers at hand.
Buy it. Read it. Use it.

2 out of 5 stars Too wordy.......2007-03-08

There is some good information, but it is buried amougst stuff you can get for free in the help files.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2007-02-14

If you are looking for a book that is related to real world situations rather than teaching you to use 100's of out of context features... than buy this book, this book shows you when and how and most importantly why to use different features of MS Project. It also explains concepts clearly and simple.

Dont buy any other books...

3 out of 5 stars Too many words for concept.......2007-02-11

The book could be compressed to at least half of its size. It takes about a hundred pages to get to the real stuff. A lot of marketing about the author's organization is boring and irritating. Because as a project manager I don't have time to get thru all these crap. Very bad style to write a book.
Having said that, some positives are, a few concepts have been explained well.

4 out of 5 stars A great book to learn MS Project 2003 AND scheduling techniques.......2006-09-29

I purchased this book as part of the "Microsoft Office Project 2003 Orange Belt Self Study Package" from IIL (Institute for International Learning). For those who understand the basic concepts of project management, the book is extremely educational as it will teach you the basics of MS Project, as well as various project scheduling techniques that you may not have been aware of.

The book also clearly illustrates the various "quirks" of MS Project, and how best to use the features. Some of the material may be a rehash for those who have used the tool before, but from my experience, 90% of the people who claim to be MS Project "savvy" have never used the advanced features.

FYI...
For those interested in the IIL OrangeBelt certification (which is THE official MS Project certification approved by Microsoft), think twice about doing so. The package was $350, which covers the cost of this book, the exam, and an extremely poorly-written answer guide which is supposed to serve as a supplement, but failed miserably due to poor content. Simply buy this book and use MS Project regularly, and forego the certification that few people know/care about.

In summary, this is a great book which I highly recommend for any project manager who plans to use MS Project regularly.

Book Description

The ability to bring new and innovative products to market rapidly is the prime critical competence for any successful consumer-driven company. All industries, especially automotive, are slashing product development lead times in the current hyper-competitive marketplace. This book is the first to thoroughly examine and analyze the truly effective product development methodology that has made Toyota the most forward-thinking company in the automotive industry.

In The Toyota Product Development System: Integrating People, Process, and Technology, James Morgan and Jeffrey Liker compare and contrast the world-class product development process of Toyota with that of a U.S. competitor. They use extensive examples from Toyota and the U.S. competitor to demonstrate value stream mapping as an extraordinarily powerful tool for continuous improvement.

Through examples and case studies, this book illustrates specific techniques and proven practices for dealing with challenges associated with product development, such as synchronizing multiple disciplines, multiple function workload leveling, compound process variation, effective technology integration, and knowledge management.

This valuable book:

Highlights the application of value stream mapping methodology to product development. Identifies and defines the categories of waste that are specific to the product development process. Presents countermeasures and proven practices, based on Lean principles, developed for the product development process used at Toyota. Illustrates and clarifies the methodology by presenting actual case examples at Toyota and a U.S. competitor.

Readers of this book can focus on optimizing the entire product development value stream rather than focus on a specific tool or technology for local improvements.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Toyota system- A good book.......2007-10-07

I bought this book as a part of my classroom text material. It's an interesting book that talks about how Toyota uses its system to achieve lean manufacturing by integrating people, process and technology. This is coupled with the lean design guide book for our text. It is informative.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those who want to study the next product development frontier!.......2007-06-18

This book is based on lean product development in the automotive world and has some shortcomings when it comes to applying what Toyota does to other industries. However, with Toyota's success lately their are few arguments against not studying how Toyota approaches product development and applying it to our specific industries. I think the hardest thing for most American companies will be having the long-term discipline to implement what Toyota has done.

1 out of 5 stars Academic Review of New Product Development.......2007-05-28

Although this book is very popular today, the authors offer no new approaches to new product development. Companies should strive to leapfrog Toyota. Similarly to Demmings' focus on quality, every aspect of Toyota's NPD process was first developed in the USA, which still ranks as the World's leading innovation source.

5 out of 5 stars Best book about Toyota PD.......2007-05-08

This is the third book I've read about Toyota and by far the best one. I'm an engineering manager and found dozens of simple, new ideas in this book. This is a very thorough & practical guide to the inside workings of Toyota's PD system. There are many examples and sufficient details that you can easily understand them and also try to implement them in your own organization.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for OEM........2007-04-05

Very interesting topics covered. Strongly recommended for engineers in the automotive industry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-09-27

This item is half the price in the collage bookstore. It arrived quickly, unlike our bookstore with a record of delivering tech books after classes start for the upper level courses.

5 out of 5 stars MS Office Project 2007.......2007-09-21

I bought this book because it was recommended for an online-college course that I am taking. I couldn't believe that the same book was much higher in price on several other websites and how affordable it was to get through Amazon. The book itself is excellent as it gives step-by-step directions on how to use the project. It is an excellent resource and very easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking detailed, but easy to understand directions regarding the product it is designed for.

3 out of 5 stars Not helpfull in the business enviroment.......2007-07-30

This book may have been usfull for running a home business but, not too usful for me.

5 out of 5 stars MS Project 2007 Step by Step Review.......2007-07-16

I thought I already gave this one a review, but if you did not receive it, I just wanted you to know that your expedient service was excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Full and Practical.......2007-05-17

Once I get a Step by Step series book, and its operating model is just what you need if you start from scratch or you're an advanced specialist looking for updates. Very precise and clear explanations and companion CD with samples files for practicing just rocks!, you have the entire scenario and just need to get creative to escalate your neverending questions to the sample scenario, which is just as clear to see as on the field.
2007 version is just what I spected from the book, covering every topic from basic use to advanced control and tracking and integration with Project Server. You can notice PMI orientation in product, and that's quite good worked on the book.
I missed some information regarding some intelligence moved from Office Project to PWA (Server), like enterprise fields and server settings (well I supposed I'll get new stuff from the next MOC for Project Server)

If you want to solve questions regarding the use of the product, or maybe you're trying to get quite the expertise for a terrific project management, this book will do the job

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Reference.......2007-01-04

I am not a very experienced Project Manager.
I bought the book as I was going to participate in Projects in my organization and planned to equip myself with everything I could about it.

Also, I took 2 Microsoft Oficial Courses (beginner and intermediate) on Microsoft Project 2003 that costed my organization about $200.

I give it 5 Stars because the book has every topic there is about Microsoft Project 2003 that I have come to need (and more).

However, if you are new to MS Project consider that it might pay you more to take some courses. You will learn in them all the backbone knowledge to succesfully manage projects without having to spent alot of hours reading the book.

Remember that this book is very extensive on each topic, it's excellent for reference or advanced use specially when you're an experienced project Manager since you will learn stuff you didnt know you could do.
But if what you're looking for is learning Project 2003, I think its faster and more practical to take a course.

2 out of 5 stars Not-so-hot.......2006-02-01

Using Microstoft Project 2003 by Tim Pyron
It's exactly 2.000 inches thick, which, I believe, must have been one of the publisher's criteria. If you've used Project for years on a daily basis and want to know even more, it's for you. If you want to learn Microsoft Project, don't buy this book. It's a direct violation of the "Say what you need to, as simply as you can" rule from 8th grade English. Do yourself a favor. Forget about MS Project and buy Mindjet's MindManager software. You can learn that in an afternoon and it's far more powerful software.

5 out of 5 stars The only book that provides answers to tough questions.......2005-08-25

I have three other project books on my shelf but whenever I run into a tough situation, this is THE book I go to. No other books out there (not even the self proclaimed bible) explains features as in depth as this book does. I especially like the section on leveling and how it explains the 7 factors used to resolve conflicts. This is a must have for all serious users of MS Project.

5 out of 5 stars More Project than I thought possible.......2004-07-13

I picked this up as I was in the middle of several complex Project plans for network upgrades and migrations, as well as a mass rollout of Office 2003. I'd used previous versions of Project before but never really learned how to use it.

By the time I finished the first 10 chapters, I had already tripled my Project knowledge...and the really cool stuff was yet to come. Project, like Visio, is an extremely complex application that most people never crack the surface as far as usability goes. Anyone who is doing heavy Project Management needs to use Project, this is the book to learn by.

5 out of 5 stars Answers to effectively manage computerized office projects.......2004-05-06

Tim Pyron's Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Project 2003 is enhanced with an accompanying CD and provides direct answers to effectively manage computerized office projects. Highly recommended both as an instructional guide and as a continuing reference, Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Project 2003 includes answers on project development and implementation, as well as tracking progress and adjusting to changes, developing final reports, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Project 2003 - Not For Dummies!.......2007-07-22

Earlier this year I purchased Project 2003 for Dummies and I must say that it has been a very useful tool. Since purchasing the book from Amazon I have been able to build and use Microsoft Project 2003 for a number of incentive and loyalty marketing projects that I have either launched or worked on. I would highly recommend Project 2003 for Dummies to anyone who needs to build or manage a project plan.

5 out of 5 stars Book was in excellent condition.......2007-04-10

Ordered the book and received it promptly. Great service from Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Best of the Dummies.......2007-03-19

I found this book very poorly organized. The author dives into technicalities before explaining the basics. For example, there are "tasks" and "subtasks." Tasks get immediate treatment, but then the book dives into calendars and effort management and other "advanced tab" topics without explaining subtasks, and how subtasks are entered. Even though there are examples in chapters 1-4 using subtasks, subtasks are not explained until chapter 5 (that's right, FIVE). Examples on page 65 and 78 show subtasks, but you don't learn how to enter one until page 93.
I spent a lot of time going back and re-reading, trying to find out if I missed something so that I could duplicate the examples - a lot of wasted time.
Starting with a complete and simple project, and then adding layers of complication on to it, would have been a much more effective approach. Overall, I am not happy with this book. In most "for dummies" books I can get up and running on a basic level in a few hours. I am now at hour four, page 85, and just about to learn about tasks and subtasks.

4 out of 5 stars About what I expected.......2007-01-12

This was a good book. As with all the "dummies" books it was fairly straightforward. Pretty basic. It is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2006-03-20

This manuel was an excellent start for some of us "dummies" out there. Though I have signed up for a Project Class to be taken in person, this book as definately helped me to get by with a little help from the Dummy Writers.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Material.......2007-10-17

This book has some great insight into project management as a whole and gives detailed info on the software. I really liked it and found it to be quite helpful.

    4 out of 5 stars Helpful Book........2007-08-09

Very nice step by step. A little too much detail someitmes, but helps you know what you need to about the program and how the total project fits together.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Get Started.......2007-03-08

Project management on even a fairly large project is both important and difficult to accomplish without computer assistance. Microsoft Project is a full fledged project management system that is fully integrated into the Microsoft Office environment. This means that the screen looks a lot like any other Office application. There are several versions of Project, and these are described to assist in deciding what to buy.

Finally you get to the point where you have Project on your system and have gotten it started. This is a 'For Dummies' book. And it makes the assumption that you aren't dump, that you have some idea about how to use a computer and have just been assigned the task of managing a project. It begins with defining things like What Is Project Management? Then it leads you through how Project 2007 can help you keep track of things.

Of all the books I've seen, this is the one I'd recomment for the beginning user. There are some more complex reference books for advanced users, but this is the place to start. Later, if PM turns you on, you can go on to certification, the official domumentation, and so on.

A final strong reason for this book is the CD. It contains an awful lot of other software that you may find helpful for us in conjunction with Microsoft Project. Many of these are free, open source programs, but here they all are, and they all work.

5 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed To Get Up to Speed.......2006-12-31

I started a new job last month and my employer requires me to use Microsoft Project. I grabbed this book and sat down with it over a weekend. By Monday morning I was able to get into the software, start to build a project, and ask intelligent questions about Project of my boss. I'm sure I'll take advantage of all the great advice about keeping my project in line as I get deeper into my projects at work over the next few months. Great way to get going fast!

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Get Started with Project.......2006-12-30

This book is a great help to anybody who has to get up to speed with Project quickly. It provides a good foundation in project management basics, and offers the best way to implement your project using the software. I especially liked the advice for fine-tuning your project plan and then making adjustments to help stay on track as your project goes forward. I'd definitely recommend this to newcomers to Project or those who want to get into Project 2007 features quickly.

    Book Description

Creating the Project Office is written for managers who are searching for ways to transform their organizations into more effective and efficient project-based workplaces. As this important book reveals, there is no more effective way to make that change than to create a project office tailored to the needs of the organization. While a project office model leads to better products from projects, it is also a vehicle for generating overall organizational change— by transforming the organization from function-based to project-based. This model incorporates projects into the very fabric of the organizational strategy and revitalizes organizations, creates competitive advantage, and increases shareholder value.

I belive, if the book would have metrics and templates for the process start, it is very usefull.

    Excellent service

5 out of 5 stars Common sense applied to change management, wrapped in a bow!.......2004-12-02

I purchased this book on recommendation from a previous reviewer and was amazed by the breadth, depth, and more importantly pace of the book. The book moves quickly and does not spend a lot of time on theory, more time on examples (drawn mainly from Englund's work at HP).

The high level process applies as a general change management agenda, but applied through the lense of a PMO or project office. The annecdotes and lessons learnt provide an excellent framework for either internal "change agents" or external consultants to structure a successful organizational change and increase in proejct delivery quality.

The examples and frameworks in the book are easily understood and presented in a way that they can be reused or applied to many different project management challenges. I highly recommend this book to program managers or IT consultants who are intereste in affecting change in any organization.

    5 out of 5 stars Unusually rich.......2003-03-26

This book takes the leading thinking in implementing organizational change and applies it directly to the challenge of implementing project management. The authors then advance the art through the application of their extensive experience and original thought that leaves the reader-practitioner with a step-by-step guide to implementing a project management office.

The major strength of this manuscript is its revelation of the organizational challenges in creating a project office, their causes, and straightforward advice on navigating the pitfalls. The knowledge and experience of the authors comes through with `been there, done that' credibility. The reader leaves with a deeper understanding of their organization and the means for achieving their goal of implementing a project office.

I thought Part One was one of the best discussions I have seen of the organizational change factors involved in implementing a project office. It provided thorough overall coverage on the existing body of work in organizational change and provided an application to project management. The author's contribution of speaking truth to power is valuable.

I found the manuscript replete with illustrative material. I particularly liked the anecdotes from Greek mythology and literature. This book is unusually rich in supporting the principles advocated with clear `how-to' instructions. As a practitioner reading the book, I found myself saying: "Yes, that works," "I wish I had thought of that sooner," and "I am going to use that tomorrow." - a manuscript reviewer

    Book Description

Today's project managers find themselves in the dual roles of technical expert and business leader. As project management has evolved, the need has emerged for an organizational entity to manage complexities and ensure alignment with business interests. A project management office (PMO) coordinates technical and business facets of project management and achieves the goals of oversight, control, and support within the project management environment. The Complete Project Management Office Handbook identifies the PMO as the essential business integrator of the people, processes, and tools that manage or influence project performance. This book details how the PMO applies professional project management practices and successfully integrates business interests with project goals, regardless of whether the scope of the PMO is limited to managing specific projects or expanded to the level of a full business unit. People at all levels of the project and business spectrum will benefit from this volume. The Handbook focuses on how to establish PMO functionality to meet the requirements of project stakeholders. It presents 20 pertinent PMO function models, providing guidance for developing PMO operating capability that is applicable to any organization. It also presents these functions relative to five stages of progressive PMO development along a competency continuum, demonstrating potential PMO growth from simple project control up through its alignment within a strategic business framework.

    5 out of 5 stars PMO guide.......2007-09-11

excellent reference book and would recommend it for any one wants to know more about PMO

1 out of 5 stars Reads like a big dictionary..........2006-10-19

Personally, I don't like this book. It reads like a big dictionary... lots of words but nothing tying things together. I found it difficult to find and follow a set of concrete steps to help get a PMO up and running. I understand it is "complete" but it does it at the expense of the "shotgun effect"--throwing a lot of stuff out but not really zeroing in on anything.

I think this book would be great for someone who needed to pick and choose a few specific things and wanted a reference but as a day-to-day book to help with setting up a PMO and figuring out how to get a PMO effort off the ground in a way that ensures success, it misses the mark unfortunately.

5 out of 5 stars Keep this Handbook "Handy".......2006-05-11

Hill's book is an excellent overview of the Project Management Office(PMO) stages and functions. It is well-organized and well-written, with each chapter following a consistent format and including a related function model for the topic being discussed.

    I particularly liked:

o The PMO Competency Continuum that depicts the five stages in the evolution of a full-blown PMO (i.e.,Center of Excellence), and the functions, advantages and disadvantages associated with each stage

o The table depicting the 20 PMO functions, grouped within his five function categories: Practice Management, Infrastructure Management, Resource Integration, Technical Support and Business Alignment

o Good use of charts, diagrams, bullets, examples, etc.

o Recognition of the PMO's business integration function

Suggestion for future editions: Correlate functions and processes to the Project Management Institute (PMI)'s terminology, phasing, etc.

    A good desk reference!

This is a very useful book for project managers and executives. A very complete book on the subject of project management offices.
