Book Description

The names Bloch and Geitner are synonymous with machinery maintenance and reliability for process plants. They save companies like Dow and Equilon millions of dollars a year by extending the life of rotating machinery in their plants. Extending the life of existing machinery is the name of the game in the process industries, not designing new machinery. This series by Bloch and Geitner was the first and is still the best, most comprehensive source for doing just that.

This classic text on reliability has been revised to include all new material on risk management, pre-grouted bases, laser alignment, cartridge seals maintenance, and many other topics which have undergone many developments since the last revision.

*Helps engineers save their companies hundreds of thousands of dollars a year by reducing machinery downtime

*Now in its third edition, with a twenty-year history of success

*Details the money-saving techniques used by many of the world's leading companies, including Exxon, DuPont, Dow, and dozens of others

Book Description

This totally revised, updated and expanded edition provides proven techniques and procedures that extend machinery life, reduce maintenance costs, and achieve optimum machinery reliability. This essential text clearly describes the reliability improvement and failure avoidance steps practiced by best-of-class process plants in the U.S. and Europe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most practical text available on the subject.......1998-10-24

There's a profusion of books that explain the philosophy of equipment reliability improvement, but only this totally up-to-date text will show the reader how to specify, evaluate, buy, properly install, maintain and upgrade critically important pumps, compressors, and other machinery. This third edition is almost entirely new and has nearly twice as many pages as the earlier editions. The guidance on turnaround planning alone is of immense value, as are the chapters on benchmarking and life cycle costing. Many readers will find the appendix especially helpful for determining the life cycle cost impact of intelligent purchase and installation decisions for centrifugal pumps.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for the reliability professional!.......1998-09-28

The author has really outdone himself with this completely revised, updated third edition! I will be able to apply his newly included guidelines on what equipment should be included in turnarounds. I found the electric motor procurement guidelines immensely helpful: Bloch "demistifies" the hype about high efficiency motors. His material on the reliability impact of state-of-art, centralized greasing systems is superb. He has added to his wealth of information a number of "zero cost" tips on pump upgrading which, after implementation on a single pump, will have paid for the book a hundred times.

We plan to make extensive use of the informative chapter on gas seals for compressors and centrifugal pumps and will pay close attention to John Mitchell's 26-page introduction to this profusely illustrated 650-page book. What a great teaching tool for the next generation of reliability technicians!

Book Description

A highly practical troubleshooting tool for today's complex processing industry

Evolving industrial technology-driven by the need to increase safety while reducing production losses-along with environmental factors and legal concerns has resulted in an increased emphasis on sound troubleshooting techniques and documentation. Analytical Troubleshooting of Process Machinery and Pressure Vessels provides both students and engineering professionals with the tools necessary for understanding and solving equipment problems in today's complex processing environment.

Drawing on forty years of industrial experience in the petrochemical, transportation, and component manufacturing industries, the author introduces analytical models that utilize simple mathematics to provide engineers with the information needed to understand equipment operation and failure modes. This will allow engineering professionals to talk intelligibly with manufacturers, implement modifications required for continued operation, and ultimately help them save millions of dollars in lost production or warranty claims.

Readers will find in-depth coverage of factors that can cause equipment failure, including:
* Component wear and fretting
* Vibration of machines and piping
* Instabilities and sizing of pumps and compressors
* Thermal loads and stresses
* Gear, bearing, shafting, and coupling loading
* Corrosion and materials of construction

By striking a balance between analytical and practical considerations, each potential problem area is illustrated with case studies taken from the author's own extensive experience and accompanied by methods that can be used to address a variety of related challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading and Reference for Complex Problem Solving.......2007-07-17

Warning . . . books like this tend to go out of print (OOP). Not since Bob Eisenmann's OOP "Machinery Malfunction Diagnosis and Correction" has anyone put so many practical (dare I say "easy?") calculations in one place that allow the sincere problem solver to do his or her job. What's even better about this book is its seemingly unlimited range of applications. Was the force created by your rotor spinning, alone, enough to loosen those bolts or break that bearing housing? Sofronas helps you understand. Did that collar's interference fit overstress a critical component - enough to cause a failure? Check the book. Think you have water hammer? Prove it fast. Not a compilation of charts and tables - but truly something rare and to be coveted for its ability to arm you with the secrets of extreme failure analysis (lots at risk but little to go by).

Book Description

This updated edition is an invaluable source of practical cost-effective maintenance, repair, installation, and field verification procedures for machinery engineers. It is filled with step-by-step instructions and quick-reference checklists that describe preventive and predictive maintenance for major process units such as vertical, horizontal, reciprocating, and liquid ring vacuum pumps, fans and blowers, compressors, turboexpanders, turbines, and more. Also included are sections on machinery protection, storage, lubrication, and periodic monitoring. A new section examines centrifugal pumps and explains how and why they continue to fail. More new information focuses on maintenance for aircraft derivative gas turbines. This revised edition gives special attention throughout to maintenance and repair procedures needed to ensure efficiency, performance, and long life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A single-source reference for the maintenance professional.......1999-02-28

As in the preceding three textbooks of this series, the authors take us through principles of installation and general operating issues to the main topic of interest: how to install and repair such machines as horizontal and vertical pumps, reciprocating and liquid ring vacuum pumps, blowers, reciprocating gas engines and associated compressors. The second part of this very readable and well-illustrated text takes us to maintenance issues involving such equipment as industrial gearing, belt-drives, steam turbines, turboexpanders, gas turbines, and hydraulic governors, to the maintenance of electric motors and associated apparatus. Part three deals with storage protection and gives cost-saving hints on grease lubricated bearings as well as lubrication management in general. Also touched on is vibration and condition monitoring--a fine overview of profit-driven practices. The book closes with solid information on the maintainability, serviceability, and availability of machinery. When is the next book coming?

    Book Description

    The authors use their decades of experience and draw upon real-world examples to demonstrate that the application of their techniques provides a basis for equipment management, uptime maximization, and reduced maintenance costs. The text explores reliability assessment techniques such as Failure Mode, Effect Analysis, and Fault Tree Analysis of commonly encountered rotating machinery. These are all highly effective techniques that the engineer can apply to maximize uptime and thereby maximize production and profitability.

    *Provides the tools to drastically improve machinery productivity and performance

    *Bridges the gap between the theory of "reliability engineering" and the practical day-to-day measures that lead to machinery uptime

    *Authoritative reference for maximizing the uptime of process equipment
