4 out of 5 stars Is a excelent book..........2001-05-01

The book is excelent. The tips and event simulations projects are useful (if you are in simulation and research operation market). I have four stars for this book because all the models are event oriented...

Don't buy if you need study dynamic models in diferential equations.

5 out of 5 stars Better for grad or high-level, good for novice as well.......2001-03-27

Many discrete-event simulation books make this book unique. Banks didn't focus particularily on some packages, but the foundation of discrete-event simulation. I think this book intended to people who has some simulation background. It's also a good reference for researchers or grad students as well as practitioners since many literature and simulation vendors are listed. For no-simulation-background reader, this book may be a good starting point -as the first book for simulation. However, you may need other related books if you want to learn some packages. Not a bad book at all, very recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Good publication for the current practicing engineer........1999-03-16

If you have a good background in calculus based statistics, this is a good reference book. The author has pulled together great historical statistical testing and design info and integrates it with recent research. A good deal of the work comes out of research recently presented at the Winter Simulation Conference series. Each chapter has ample bibliographic information for further reading.

Book Description

This book provides a basic treatment of discrete-event simulation, one of the most widely used operations research and management science tools for dealing with system design in the presence of uncertainty. Proper collection and analysis of data, use of analytic techniques, verification and validation of models and the appropriate design of simulation experiments are treated extensively. Readily understandable to those having a basic familiarity with differential and integral calculus, probability theory and elementary statistics. Includes simulation in C++, the latest versions of the most widely used packages, and features of simulation output analysis software. Covers properties, modeling and random-variate generation from the lognormal distribution. Clarifies the difficult distinctions between terminating and steady-state simulation, and between within- and across-replication statistics. Contains up-to-date treatment of simulation of manufacturing and material handling systems. Emphasizes the hierarchical nature of computing systems, and how simulation techniques vary, depending on the level of abstraction. For readers wanting to learn more about system simulation.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Printing.......2005-08-25

My copy of this book is barely readable. Numerous parts of the text are missing. The printing is just missing here and there on the pages. Beware this edition. It is unfortunate since the content appears excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Gives a well-written and complete introduction.......2004-05-01

This book provides a very good introduction to discrete-event simulation. The authors start out by providing several simple examples in areas such as queueing and inventory systems, as well as reliability. After the first few chapters the reader gets a sense of what simulation represents and why it is done. In later chapters they score high marks in introducing more advanced issues, such as probability models, random number and random variate generators, queueing theory, and input modeling.

In closing, the book makes for a very good junior or senior-level introduction to simulation, and I especially am thankful that the presentation was made independent of any simulation package. Instead it focuses on those things that any good simulation package/language should have (e.g. random-number generators, built-in objects for customers and servers, statistical support for evaluating hypotheses about collected data, etc.).

4 out of 5 stars statictical simulation.......2002-07-11

This book contains very well topics as input and output analysis, verification and validation, random number generation etc. I strongly recommend this book as an introduction of theoric simulation.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, updated, great book of simulation systems.......2001-03-26

Banks revised his great book with updated simulation package and information. Several new issues, such as, tools/softwares, random-variable generation, simulation termination, how to use Simulation to analysis and design computer system, many downloadable examples. Sufficient theories, to understand Simulation, are given, for instance, the Statistics and Queueing theories. Two chapters are dedicated for random-number generation. One chapter is dedicated for verification and validation of simulation models. Although it's only one chapter, several references are given for further study. IE or logistic practioner will enjoy since one chapter is for manufacturing and material handling system (wow!). Very good reference and practice.

5 out of 5 stars A complete vision.......2000-09-05

This book brings a very complete explanation about what Discrete Event System Simulation is. From the very beginning, they introduce what Simulation is by means of simple examples that you can manage by hand. They also give a comprehensive explanation about how to determine the apropiate distribution functions to use in the simulation. And how to statistically analyze the simulation results. The book also include a comprehensive brochure of different simulation languages.

            Book Description

The rapid evolution of computing, communication, and sensor technologies has brought about the proliferation of "new" dynamic systems, mostly technological and often highly complex. Examples are all around us: computer and communication networks; automated manufacturing systems; air traffic control systems; and distributed software systems. The "activity" in these systems is governed by operational rules designed by humans; their dynamics are therefore characterized by asynchronous occurrences of discrete events. These features lend themselves to the term discrete event system for this class of dynamic systems.
A substantial portion of this book is a revised version of Discrete Event Systems: Modeling and Performance Analysis (1993), which was written by the first author and received the 1999 Harold Chestnut Prize, awarded by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) for best control engineering textbook. This new expanded book is intended to be a comprehensive introduction to the field of discrete event systems, emphasizing breadth of coverage and accessibility of the material to readers with possibly different backgrounds. Its key feature is the emphasis placed on a unified modeling framework that transcends specific application areas and allows linking of the following topics in a coherent manner: language and automata theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, (max,+) algebra, Markov chains and queueing theory, discrete-event simulation, perturbation analysis, and concurrent estimation techniques. Until now, these topics had been treated in separate books or in the research literature only.
Introduction to Discrete Event Systems is written as a textbook for courses at the senior undergraduate level or the first-year graduate level. It will be of interest to students in a variety of disciplines where the study of discrete event systems is relevant: control, communications, computer engineering, computer science, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and industrial engineering.

This book is a great textbook for students who are interested in the control engineering field. Due to the difficulty, it is more focused for graduate students. This book has won the 1999 harold chestnut prize awarded by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). The topics are language and automata theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, (max,+) algebra, Markov chains and queueing theory, discrete-event simulation, perturbation analysis, and concurrent estimation techniques. This book is used in many universities in the US but also in countries like Korea as well.

              Book Description

Connectivity and facilities location are two important topics in network design, with applications in data communication, transportation, production planning, and VLSI designs. There are two issues concerning these topics: design and optimization. They involve combinatorial design and combinatorial optimization. This volume features talks presented at an interdisciplinary research workshop held at DIMACS in April 1997. The workshop was attended by leading theorists, algorithmists, and practitioners working on network design problems.

Finding the solution of design problems and the optimal or approximate solution of the related optimization problem are challenging tasks because no polynomial time algorithms are known. Such problems include some variations of Steiner tree problems (such as multiple-connected Steiner network, independent flow problem, and subset-interconnection designs), topology network design, nonlinear assignment problems (such as quadratic assignment problems), problems in facilities location and allocation, and network problems appearing in VLSI design.

The focus of this book is on combinatorial, algorithmic, and applicational aspects of these problems. The volume would be suitable as a textbook for advanced courses in computer science, mathematics, engineering, and operations research.
