Pete Dunne's Essential Field Guide Companion: A Comprehensive Resource for Identifying North American Birds
ASIN: 0618756426 |
Book Description
Alight and fun collection of birding advice, with contributions from Kenn Kaufman, David Sibley, Pete Dunne, Tim Gallagher, Don and Lillian Stokes, Bill Thompson III, and forty-four others. Original essays from the biggest names in birding dispense advice to birders of every level, on topics ranging from feeding birds and cleaning binoculars to pishing and pelagic birding. Whether satirizing bird snobs or relating the traditions and taboos of the birding culture, each essay is chock-full of helpful information and entertaining as well. Pete Dunne’s lively foreword kicks off the collection of essays, which are organized by category. Half of the essays are illustrated with delightful black-and-white line drawings by artist Robert Braunfield.
Customer Reviews:
Not a how-to book, but a delightful read with wonderful illustrations.......2007-08-15
If you're looking for an encyclopedic how-to book on birding, this is not it. Rather, these essays by some of the top names in the business are reflections on birdwatching experiences with some lessons derived from those often hilarious experiences thrown in. There are some useful tips to be gleaned along the way, no doubt, but what you will really enjoy is discovering the sense of common experience with the writers even if you haven't been to these locales. I found myself chuckling throughout and thinking, "Oh, boy. Yep, that's happened to me." Or, "I've seen that too many times. When will people learn?" It's a good refresher on the do's and don't's, and a refreshing read on a wonderful avocation.
I can't say enough about the illustrations--delightful, amusing, creative, and funny, for starters. They are an excellent addition to the essays. I hope we see more of Mr. Braunfield's work in other books soon. I'm giving the book 5 stars just for the illustrations alone.
Lastly, this would make a great gift for the avid or amateur birder or birdwatcher in your life. You know the ones...they can be found with binoculars at the ready, decked out in white...or not, sometimes on private lands, sometimes on national forests and grasslands. What are those? Read The Forest Service and the Greatest Good: A Centennial History and see.
Good Birders Don't Wear White.......2007-04-25
Imagine someone, or a group, deciding that it would be a great idea to have a book containing essays by all of the really good contributors to the literature about birds. This is that book. There are fifty essays. The contributors have published books, written articles, edited magazines, photographed birds; in short, they are the cream of the crop. Several are represented on my bookshelves. The cartoonish illustrations in the book are fantastic and match wonderfully well with the text.
The problem with the book is that the useable information content is very low. Regardless of whether you are a beginning birder, intermediate, or expert; you will find a small amount of useable information here while the rest you either knew or didn't want to know. Part of the problem is that there was too little space to develop a thought. Take 261 pages, subtract space for 24 full-page illustrations, take away enough lines for long paragraphs giving the awards and accomplishments of each writer, and provide a lot of white space. Divide that by fifty and you don't allow a writer room to say much.
On the other hand, every reader will find something of value. The last two essays caused me to reflect on what it takes to be a good birder. And then, there are those delightful illustrations.

Homage to Elmer Batters.......2002-10-18
Elmer Batters: From the Tip of the Toes to the Top of the Hose is a homage to a real American cultural icon--the cheesecake photographer as artist. As any Batters fan knows, his photographs of female nylonned feet and legs raised a personal obsession to the level of pop art. The photos speak for themselves and any person interested in leg art will find them interesting at the very least and erotically fascinating at most. Batters' camera and his eye for composition could transform an absolutely ordinary girl next door type into a mysterious love goddess. As a long-time Batters fan, I expected the photos to be wonderful and erotic. What is surprising about the book is the interview material. Elmer Batters was an ordinary man trying to pursue a vision and make a living by doing something equally contrary to the morality of the fifties and the free sexuality of the sixties. Batters simply did not "fit in" in either decade. It is absolutely fascinating to read Elmer Batters' thoughts on what constitutes a great erotic photograph. It is also interesting and poignant to read about his approach to cheesecake photography: his way of working with models, and the role his wife played as a partner and supporter in what must be one the more unlikely artistic collaborations. The story of Batters' various brushes with the censors in the fifties and sixties are also interesting and more than a little troubling. If I have any criticism of this book at all, it is that I would have loved to have heard more about Elmer Batters' life and struggle to make a living in a very odd profession: photographing nylon legs and feet! This book is a must!
Stockings and Feet Fans.......2001-10-03
Elmer Batters' name is nearly synonomous with leg art and pinup photography. This book is a nice tribute to his work, and my only complaint is that is too brief. The interview with him and the history behind some of the models was interesting reading, and of course, the photos are a treat.
The best!!.......2001-08-03
Mr. Batters has(sadly)passed away but he leaves some awfully big shoes to fill. If you have a foot fetish, then you owe it to yourself to get this book. It makes me smile, ear to ear, when I see the work of this artist. His work isn't commercialized and if you read the book you'll discover he didn't have it as easy as some do today. We all owe this man more than we can repay! But don't just trust the words of others...see for yourself. You won't regret it! ;)
Batters is an Inspiration.......2001-07-13
For those of us who like to wear stockings and suspenders, this book shows how it should be done with style and grace.
FEMALE NYLONED TOES THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF!.......2000-08-15
I grew up collecting Elmer Batters Magazines, 8mm Films and later Videos. Little did I know the World Wide Cultural Icon He would become. Finding this book renewed old passions, in a life filled with erotic Fantasies revolving around Female Nylon Clad Feet which began when I was in 5th grade. I strongly recommend this series for those who where not fortunate enough to collect all of the Masters images. Or as in my case lost the images to neglect and wear and tear of the Original Magazines.I AM A TRUE BELIEVER in elmers legacyA True Believer In Nyloned Female Feet as Objects of Great BeautyEd Lawrenceedlawrence@yahoo.com

In a sister-to-sister, brother-to-brother approach to good health for African Americans, this folksy guide addresses everything from acne to breast cancer, heart disease to HIV/AIDS, prostate problems to sickle cell anemia, vitiligo (loss of brown pigment resulting in white skin patches) to weight problems. Written by and for African Americans, Health and Healing for African-Americans features more than 100 chapters, each of which begins with an anecdote about someone who's grappled with a particular health issue, and concludes with advice from African American health professionals about prevention and treatment.
In heart-to-heart words from former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, whose brother died from a gunshot wound and whose sister was killed in a car crash, and with advice from more than 150 experts from Harvard Medical School, Howard University, Meharry Medical College, National Cancer Institute, and elsewhere, the book sends the message about taking control of your health loud and clear. "We can't be wealthy unless we're healthy, and we can't be healthy unless we're wise," Elders writes in the foreword. "And to get that wisdom," she says, "the information in these pages is the next best thing to having a doctor at your disposal 24 hours a day."
Book Description
This comprehensive medical guide addresses the special health concerns of African Americans, from managing diabetes to understanding lupus to treating sickle cell disease. Each entry unfolds with a true-to-life personal health story--the challenges people faced and how they overcame them--from everyday people and celebrities such as Levar Burton and theatrical producer and former dancer Harold Perkins. Their inspiring stories are followed by a clear description of the condition or disease, practical home remedies, medical treatments and prevention strategies from black doctors and health experts. A foreword by renowned Dr. Joycelyn Elders, thorough index, and detailed A-to-Z encyclopedic advice make this a must-have health resource for every African-American.
Customer Reviews:
"This book was not very informative at all"........2007-04-19
I thought the book would be full of good, practical information considering it had the input of so many physicians however, it was a great let down because it shed very little light on health matters at all.
I would reccommend the Merck Manual for anyone, white or black who is trying to find out health information on various conditions from diabetes to hypertension.
This book was not worth the money and more importantly did not teach me anything because it was alot of fluff and no susbstance.
GREAT BOOK.......1997-10-18
THANKS FOR A GREAT BOOK, EACH TOPIC WAS BRIEF AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT. IT DID AWAY WITH SOME OLD WIVES TALES AND MYTHS.

Metropolitan Home American Style
ASIN: 1933231033 |
Book Description
Each issue of Metropolitan Home magazine is filled with photographs of some of the world's most beautiful houses. But making your own home special isn't just about copying photos. Good designers have a vision of what they want to create, and come up with a plan for how best to achieve it. Understanding first the ideas, and then the methods, is the key to taking a house from drab to fabulous. In this book, Michael Lassell, who has been writing for Metropolitan Home since 1992, goes behind the photos. He uncovers the secrets of the professionals by asking: What did the designer want to do? And how did the designer do it? Each room or style is accompanied by insider's tips where designers reveal their trade secrets. In each case, introductory text explores the homeowner's and designer's goals. The book also explores how they achieved those goals: a "key to the style" box explains the designer's approach with a few key concepts; and "What the Pros Know About" boxes explains how the designer went from ideas to reality. With 200 color photographs, Decorate provides all the inspiration and expertise to help any home decorator find and achieve high style.

Outstanding.......2005-12-06
Last year I bought RENOVATE, created, like this one, by the Metropolitan Home team. Since I liked it so much, I had to buy this one as well! What a great book: I am closing on a home in a few weeks, and I am eagerly looking for inspirational books. Of all the ones I purchased this season, this one is the best. While it has wonderful images, it does give many tips to get the look of your choice. I highly recommend it.

Written by two geology professors, this hiking guide takes you from the highest point in Massachusetts--Mount Greylock in the Berkshires--to the great sand dunes of Cape Cod, along the way highlighting the area's flora and fauna, and human and natural history. Part of the popular Fifty Hikes series, the guide points out refreshing swimming holes, smooth sunbathing rocks, and scenic vistas. But authors John Brady and Brian White leave the trail of the standard hiking guide when they describe the massive earth forces that push mountains up and erode valleys down, giving the hiker a whole new respect for the landscape. The book, designed for day hiking, includes the difficulty, mileage, hiking time, maximum elevation, and vertical rise for each of the 50 trails, and generously illustrates each with topographic maps and photographs. This is a valuable Massachusetts hiking companion, for the novice as well as the experienced hiker. --Dolores Kong
Customer Reviews:
Walks, not hikes.......1999-11-15
This book, like others in this series, is really a set of easy walks, not hikes. Admittedly, I am an avid hiker, but nothing longer than 8 miles is present (not a single overnight hike). Also, many of these hikes are somewhat roundabout. While I'm all for loops, these are on not-too-clearly labelled areas with quite a few road walks. It seems like there must be more in Massachusetts than this.
Great book! Especially for the beginner in hiking!.......1999-10-16
This book is great, especially for a beginner at hiking (which I am). It gives you great spots to check out, lets you know how long the distance is and about how long it will take to hike it. You can find hikes from .6 of a mile to 8.5 miles. There are plenty of hikes for every level. The only thing I wish the book had slightly more detailed trail maps, but usually you can get them easily enough.

this book contains nothing new.just stuff you can find surfing in the internet for a few hours.not worth reading it-the things are too obvious.
Not many secrets revealed.......2005-05-29
The author tries to cover many subjects (skin, hair, body, cellulite, exercise, makeup, style, clothes, stress, spirituality...) in a small book (little over 150 pages). So, she doesn't go into any depth - you probably know almost everything written here. But, scattered throughout the book, there are some useful tips and product recommendations. Unfortunately, I am not sure if they are worth the 10 bucks.

A great source of useful tips and advise from those who have made it to the top. No wasted time or space here. If you ask the question, "What can I do with..." look no further, the answer is in Tips from the Top. Edie cuts through the confusion most of us feel concerning money issues and gives advice easy to understand and invaluable to any wealth-wise person. I keep it on my dresser for quick reference and read a few tips for my subconscious before retiring. Open the book to any page and start reading to improve your money-consciousness and improve your wealth.
Tips From The Top... is a great way to start the new year!.......2002-12-17
First disclosures: I have only read a few pages so far and I am a contributor to the book.
That said, I feel that Edie Milligan did a wonderful job introducing readers to the world and work of 110 practicing financial advisors accross America. For example, she says; "When you read a traditional personal finance book written by one author you need to sift through the whole chapter to find one or two points that you can use....This book gathers all those punch lines (you know the important stuff) into one place. There's no filler here to make the book look like it says more than it does. Just tip after tip of great advice..." What more could you ask for in obtaining advice but to get it now from the world's top money minds? I enjoyed reading the tips and learning new ideas I can use in the here and now to live an enhanced quality of life. If that's important to you, this book will not only get you thinking, it will get you moving!

Interesting, but much of the information was not usable because of the use of indicators and methods not widely available to the average trader. Many of the 16 top traders have their own niche indicators. Overall the book was good and gave a view of what some super - successful traders do.
Just read this book!.......2006-07-31
Published in 1997 and no reviews? I have purchased and devoured a hundred books on technical analysis in the past two years... about 10 were important books. This book came at the right time. It is priceless and should receive 10 stars! If you read this book, you will make more money in your investments, in one minute, than the cost of this book... and maybe save thousands in the process. I read this book twice, and have read my extensive highlighting at least 12 additional times. Warning: the first chapter is terrible, so don't quit there. Chapter 2 is great and it only gets better from there. If you understand what is in this book, you will get rich.

Book Description
A completely updated new edition of a popular hiking guide to Massachusetts. Follow the footsteps of Mason Walton, the "hermit of Gloucester," who lived in a log cabin in Ravenswood Park from 1884-1917. Observe cormorants, herons, egrets, gallinules, and kingfishers on windswept Plum Island. Hike the Appalachian Trail to Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts, or take a wildflower walk along deserted woods roads in Conway State Park. Massachusetts is home to this splendid diversity of terrain and more.
This new, updated guide to over 200 miles of trails will lead you along the coastline, through marshes and woodlands, and to spectacular views and summits. There are treks for families with young children, moderately strenuous hikes for the more advanced, and rugged outings for experienced hikers. Each hike is illustrated with photographs and topographical maps and includes complete information on distance, hiking time, elevation, and trailhead access, as well as information on the natural and human history you will encounter along the way. An overview chart at the beginning of the book provides essential data and highlights of every hike. A year-round guide; includes beach walks and rugged peaks.
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas, Lousy execution.......2007-08-12
I agree with the previous reviewers comments.
The book provides great ideas for hikes, and has informative text on the geology of the area, and even points you toward scenic trailheads. But the directions are lousy and convoluted. I have gotten seriously lost trying to follow.
I'd advise people to buy this book, but when the authors' directions get difficult, backtrace your way to your car rather than relying on them. Better to walk the same trail twice than to get totally lost!
Good hikes in here, though.
50 HIKES IN MASSACHUSETTS.......2005-09-01
The three stars are in appreciation of the books identification of hikes I would never have found on my own. It also has useful maps for locating the hikes, and provided helpful information for the one hike I have taken with its help. This was the first hike listed in the book, to the top of Mt. Alander.
The less than perfect score reflects serious deficiencies in the guide to this hike. First, poetic descriptions of landscape and wildlife obscured important directions. Second, there was no indication of the actual distance between the landmarks buried in the descriptions.
The most serious deficiency has to do with directions to the summit. These were very brief and gave way to an extensive and ecstatic account of the views from the top. The trail to the top forks, and there was no indication in the guide of which fork to take. The right fork I took led away from the views so ecstatically described. The most serious problem was the absence of any indication of how to get down from the summit. Trying to retrace my steps, I came upon a sign pointing to landmarks in New York State. Fortunately I ran into two experienced hikers who pointed out the best line of descent and got us back on the trail to the parking area in Massachusetts.
