5 out of 5 stars From Reel to Deal.......2007-10-06

One of the best books I've read on the motion picture industry.
You could not learn more spending 4 years at UCLA Film School.
Now I watch movies with a different perspective.

5 out of 5 stars The Independent Filmmaker's BIBLE!.......2007-09-20

I've read every book on Independent Filmmaking that I can get my hands on and this one book has more useful information than all of the others combined. I'm now shooting my forth feature length film and if I'd had this book before shooting the first three I'd be a lot better off today!

Mr. Nerd is apparently illiterate; though Simens does use a million dollar budget as an example of how to allocate your funds as he goes through all of the steps, this book absolutely does address budgets of every size from ten million dollars right down to your five thousand dollar digital feature for the Direct To Video market. I really don't see how anybody who had actually read the book could possibly miss this as the various budget constraints are addressed in almost every chapter as he takes you through the steps. In fact, he even outlines a method for shooting a feature length, 35 millimeter film on a five thousand dollar budget.

The two chapters on screenplay writing have more useful information than any book that I've read on screenplay writing and applying these techniques to my latest screenplay has resulted in the best work that I've ever done! That's one of the beautiful things about this book; Simens is not an egocentric, long winded babbler. He gives you just what you need to know and how to go about it.

This is the first book I've read that actually has useful information on things like fund raising and distribution options and how you might avoid getting ripped off... something that happens to so many of us aspiring filmmakers all the time.

I could probably write twenty pages about why this is the best filmmaking book ever written, but I will just say that every single page is packed with valuable, useful, practical information that actually makes sense.

Anyone who is seriously considering producing or directing a feature film, or even a short for that matter, needs to read this book three times, then use it as a reference when you start filming.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-08-05

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I thought it was very applicabale to real life situations and useful knowledge for my future.

4 out of 5 stars Becoming the bible for independent moviemaking business.......2007-07-31

At first I was skeptical. Dov has never made a movie himself...just worked on a bunch and been around for awhile. It was obvious this is his three-day filmmaking seminar (and he honestly admits it). But I found new respect for Mr. Simens with his "take no prisoners" approach. He is brutally honest and doesn't sugar-coat things to not offend a tender wanna-be's feelings. If you're not going to be a serious filmmaker, he doesn't have time for you...just keep "playing" and get out of the way of those that want to become pros in the business.
This book is becoming the reference book amoung a growing field of independent moviemaking books serving the new boom in filmmaking. This is a must-have book. You'll be referring back to it time and time again. Dov tells it like it is!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-25

Terrific resource for first time filmmakers as well as veterans! Takes you step-by-step through the entire movie making process with tons of tips. Two thumbs up!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Find Your Way; We'll Help.......2003-06-09

Please notice the absence of the words "How To" in the title of this book. This is a book of practical advice from the world of experience, not a book of instruction with facts and statistics. You will need to know and learn a great deal to figure out how to start and build a thriving theatre company, and this book will give you only the merest outline of what you need.

That said, this book does glean the best advice from companies like Steppenwolf, Bailiwick, Mixed Blood, and the legendary Pasadena Playhouse, and presents all this advice in a clear, readable manner. Be explaining how these above-average, highly-respected theatre companies built themselves up--their mistakes as well as their successes--we get a glimpse into the world of high motivation, artistic dedication, and pure love that turns something as uncertain as a theatre company into a thriving success.

You'll still have to do the hard work yourself, and you'll still make some nasty mistakes right off the bat. Indeed, this book encourages you to do so early and often, so you get it out of your system. But if you want to get some good pointers and avoid the really egregious errors, this is your book.

1 out of 5 stars Just Awful.......2006-07-07

Filled with typos and sentences that simply make no sense, "Successful Spokespersons" borders on being absolutely useless. The book opens with endless pages of bragging about who Hart trained and what he did and yada yada yada, then drones on, only occasionally offering something the reader looking for public speaking tips can actually use.

The book appears self-published, and makes some dreadful mistakes in graphics and layout. It also repeats itself in just the first four pages in that "About The Book" and the "Foreward" contain virtually the same exact copy!

For a guy who's all about presentations, you'd think he'd know better. The book isn't so much a how-to as it is a history of Hal Hart's career as a public speaking instructor.

I've no idea how I got suckered into this one, but stay away. I've read far greater books on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Strong Tips Here.......2004-11-26

Hart gives many strong and solid tips here on how to be an above average spokesperson. A quick and worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Quick read packed with practical strategies.......2001-01-20

Hal Hart condenses years of experience and a thorough knowledge of media relations and human tendencies in this compact volume. An absolute must-read for any person speaking to a group of any size, it is especially essential for leaders and spokespersons of organizations. Hart's writing is practical and to-the-point. If you haven't taken presentation or media training, you will find this book an invaluable resource. If you have, you will find it a great refresher.

    Book Description

Research in recent years on aid effectiveness shows that significant obstacles in fragile states - insecurity, poor governance and weak implementation capacity - usually prevent aid from achieving the desired results in these environments. This study investigates the attributes and effectiveness of donor-supported programmes and projects that worked well under difficult conditions in fragile states. Presented in this study are nine development initiatives in six less developed countries - Afghanistan, Cambodia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Timor Leste and Uganda. The cases show that development initiatives, which engage local communities and local level governments, are often able to have significant impact. However, for more substantial improvements to take places, localized gains need to be scaled up either horizontally (other localities) or vertically (to higher levels). Given the advantages of working at the local level and the difficulty of working through mainstream bureaucratic agencies at higher levels in these countries, donors often prefer to create 'parallel-agencies' to reach out to larger numbers of beneficiaries. However, this may in the long run weaken the legitimacy of mainstream government institutions, and donor agencies may therefore choose to work as closely as possible with government officials from the beginning to build trust and demonstrating that new initiatives are non-threatening and help prepare the eventual mainstreaming of 'parallel agencies'.

      Book Description

The topic of collaboration between academic and student affairs is now more important than ever if colleges and universities are to create seamless learning environments and educate students for the new collaborative work context. Institutions face the challenge of showing students by their own behavior that they are committed to collaboration, while still acknowledging that partnerships can be messy, that they can take more time, and that they can be frustrating. This volume examines authentic models of collaboration that will help to develop successful student leaders for the new century. It reviews the results of a national study on academic and student affairs collaborations and provides organizational models and facilitators of change as well as examples of facilitative strategies in action. With research and actual applications in the field, this volume is a significant resource for institutions seeking to foster successful collaborative relationships between academic and student affairs.

          Book Description

Planning reflects the human appetite to improve our condition. In higher education, improving one's condition includes hiring better faculty, recruiting stronger students, upgrading facilities, strenthening academic programs and student services, and acquiring the resources needed to accomplish these things. The "strategic" part of strategic planning involves shaping the institution in ways that will ensure mission attainment by capturing and maintaining a market niche in the competition for resources, faculty, and students.

Demonstrates that there are many different approaches to community colleges' partnering with the private sector and that when partners are actively engaged in tailoring education, training, and learning to their students, everyone is the beneficiary. Today as the need for information and workforce competency increases, it is especially important that community colleges embrace the opportunities inherent in collaborations with business and their local communities. These partnerships are particularly successful when each partner brings a different skill or experience to the relationship so that together they achieve, often more effectively, what separately they might be unable to accomplish. This is a true symbiosis. Appropriately, the focus of all these connections is students and learning, in one form or another.
